The Quickest Way to Escape a Flare of Ulcerative Colitis
In this video, I discuss the best steps to take in order to escape a flare of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis) and get back into remission.
The key points in this video are to let inflammation take it's course, give the digestive system a rest, eat nourishing foods, avoid certain hard-to-digest foods and reduce stress as much as possible.

Im glad to have read this as currently enduring an agonising flare due to Crohns. Rest and sleep is the only thing that is currently giving me any relief. I have cancelled nights out with friends in preference for rest and am making sure I rest the bowel to allow it to heal. Great advice and hopefully this will subside soon and take its course.

Hello I hope you are feeling better... I went through hell and back last Monday it's scary how painful it gets. I was advised by a friend to look at the AID diet for Crohn's it's in 3 phases and if you get a flare up during phase 2 or 3 you revert back to phase 1... I'm going to give it a go I can't bare the thought of another flare up after last week... I've also started with a decent probiotic finger crossed.. Hope you feel better soon. X

It seems as though fasting is a life saver. Helps me so much.I am a firm believer of drinking chaga mushroom tea, lion's mane, kefir, and of course kombucha. Your digestive system deserves it 🙏❤️ any advice for those who get dermatological reactions from flare ups? I get really bad lesions on my face and groin. It's really really terrible. Sorry for the disclosure of such personal info, it's something I've failed to control upon recurrence P.s. you are doing God's work, my friend. Thank you for what you do
@ToniAnnBarandon
@ToniAnnBarandon Год назад
HiJosh. I used to get the face lesions really bad. Starting on my nose, then out to my cheeks. I noticed my lungs felt annoyed when I had face outbreaks, so I started doing deep breathing exercises, and now I don't get face lesions anymore. I do deep breathing everyday, and it helps stave off flares, in general actually. My flares seem to be stress related, or rather, inability to deal with stress. Working on my nervous system and resilience has changed everything. I still have some trigger foods, but in the sense that they are a stress load for my digestive tract (harder to digest foods/hard to digest circumstances). One step and a time. But, it's working. XO

Hi, I do agree with a majority of what you said in your video here. I've been diagnosed with Crohn's for a little over 20 years. I do agree that the inflammatory response does require 'running it's course' and is yoir body's natural response to heal itself. I personally believe that while yes, one should give the opportunity for the aforementioned, (letting it take its course naturally, while altering diet and nutrition to cater to the flare etc.) there does however come a point where a combination therapy may be of interest and/or benefit to the individual. I am coming off of the first flare I've had in about 4.5 - 5 years. It has lasted 2 months now, however I believe I am at the 'tail-end' of the flare and while the internal bleeding/inflammation hasn't fully subsided, it is far less than it once was. Personally, what I noticed is that I was losing far too much weight and starting to bleed out after 5 weeks. That's with eating gluten/dairy/refined sugar free. Sometimes, pharmaceuticals do have their place, (as much as that kills me to say because I believe big pharma is a disease to the world for the most part). Things like Dexamethasone, in combination with a careful diet, positive mind set/stress management, natural remedies, (guy healing herbs, probiotics, etc) are all part and parcel. Probably preaching to the choir here, however I hope that this will help someone as well. I was personally quite stubborn on introducing dexamethasone to the treatment plan, and if I'm being completely honest/could go back 2 months, I would have started it as part of the process almost immediately, as well as labs etc to check for infections and things of that nature. Lastly/to be clear, I will always favor natural remedies/a clean sensible diet catered to a person's individual health, over any pill of pharmaceutical. They do however, have their place and personally, I don't think it's worth months of mine of anyone's life in recovery, just because your immune response is botched, (Crohn's after all is an auto-immune disease). Thank you for the content and I enjoyed your video! God bless 🙏🏽
@ChrisGascoigne1

Thanks for this comment Randy and you're absolutely spot on - a good diet and lifestyle is essential, pharmaceuticals do have their place but that certainly means me shouldn't rely on them for long-term maintenance use. Also another big reason for a long-term flare up could be structural issues that are present in the body, I'll be talking about this more in upcoming videos

Auto immune inflammation is not the same as normal inflammation (like a cut or sprain) it's the body attacking itself, so it can't 'run it's course' you need to managed the inflamation to help uc !

Thanks for the great video. I have started to fast on weekly basis. Which is also part of many prophetic/religious traditions. I think It's in early Christian tradition as weekly Wednesday and Friday fasts. In Muslim tradition monthly (Ramadan) and weekly Monday, Thursday fasts. Apart from allowing body to heal, fasting allows enhanced spiritually/feelings however it probably varies from person to person. My personal experience is that it gives my digestive system a break and comfort, and it gives me mental clarity, better focus and stronger/balanced emotional feelings.

No worries Pixie B thank YOU! Hey it's no issues eating those foods, actually at times they can be beneficial for human health. However, when someone is stuck in a flare-up they'll struggle to escape it when consuming starchy carbohydrates, mainly because it'll do 2 things: Feed gut dysbiosis and irritate the gut lining. UC is a very complicated condition and through trial and error the following helps me enormously. I hope it helps others. Cabbage Juice is a good help. It is packed with L-glutamine which helps heal the ulcers. I take 4fl oz after a fast of 24 hours. Once a day on an empty stomach, then after 20 mins eat a keto type diet. Fruit and veggies are an absolute no no for me. No carbs, no sugar including honey for at least 3 days.

Inflammed skin I see personally as a big indicator of flareup, it took me 6 years to figure out that acne on my face was due to UC and not hormonal which the derm wrongly diagnosed . During a flareup the acne marks pop up more and remission its calmer but in waiting when triggered. Its been 6 months getting off mezalmine and taking holistic treatment to deal with UC , just in the last 3 months faced my 1st flare up and its still going on . Paying a close attention to your diet and as Chris says and your body will tell you what feels good and what is causing inflammation.

@ChrisGascoigne1
@ChrisGascoigne1 4 года назад
Hi patriknn1, I view all diseases on a scale, with one side being 'health' and the other being 'death' with symptoms being in the middle. I think IBD and IBS are largely caused by the same factors, but IBD hits us harder because the body is under more stress through a combination of toxicity and/or nutritional deficiencies in comparison with IBS. Put simply, we've been exposed to more internal stress than an IBS sufferer and so we're forced to live with a higher severity of symptoms - hope that makes sense!

@ChrisGascoigne1
@ChrisGascoigne1 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that J Dubz, calprotectin is very tough to get down once it's up, mainly because problems in the gut will come about following damage to other systems in the body. I agree diets contradict, but that's mainly because I don't think they're the answer. I would say learning about functional neurology and the autonomic nervous system teaches you a lot about parts of the brain that have become over/under active (due to excessive/lack of stimulation OR med damage) and in turn you start to see the link between their function and the health of the gut. I reckon that's why many people who pursue diet as the cause for IBD never really make much progress

I’ve got meds, but they are not working (or very slow). Doctors have prescribed stronger ones, but I refused them after seeing the side effects. My question is, what are you thoughts of eating yoghur/kefir in my state. It will hurt 100% eating these, but from seeing your video maybe I need to get these to get out of the flare up faster. And how about raw honey and meats in my state?
@ChrisGascoigne1
@ChrisGascoigne1 4 года назад
Balen I wouldn't change up too much in your diet until getting some testing done to find a more underlying cause. Is a GI MAP test available to you where you live? Typically raw honey is a very safe option and so long as you ferment the milk into yoghurt you shouldn't get too many issues (I'd pick yoghurt over kefir though). If everything you're eating hurts, it might be an underlying issue of bacterial infection/overgrowth that needs addressing

@ChrisGascoigne1
@ChrisGascoigne1 4 года назад
Really sorry to hear that Bradley, have you ever looked into having any testing done mate? Two of the things I suggest looking at are the health of your nervous system (that controls the gut) and the contents of the gut itself. One indication of a poor functioning nervous system will be poor posture, so if you have that and you find it difficult to handle any form of stress, then that could be an issue. If not then it might be that you have a bacterial overgrowth, or an opportunistic species living in your gut causing issues, I would maybe look towards a GI MAP test to check for those bacterial markers - all the best mate

I must disagree with you on just letting inflammation taking its course. Yes, it’s the body’s natural response, but you can stop it altogether. Fasting is the number one course of action. Secondly, once you begin eating again you must cut out the carbs completely and cane sugars. Your diet must consist of fruits and veggies. No Dairy products and no wheat. You need Vitamin D and Curcumin AND probiotics are a must! The above list will absolutely take care of UC and IBS.

So sorry to hear this mefreee2, keep looking for the signs, making notes of your symptoms and perhaps look to have testing done to identify what the issue might be. The 2 biggest causes I'm currently addressing are 1. autonomic nervous system dysfunction and also 2. Small intestine bacterial overgrowth. If you're in a long and ongoing flare it's probably that you just haven't identified what's causing the inflammation, keep strong bud

I know it might suck but I have OC and my first flare up was terrible. So bad to the point I wasn’t able to fall asleep laying down. I did however sit on the couch and being in the upright position really gave some relief. Try sleeping on a recliner or something that props you in the upright position (kinda like sitting normally on a couch). This is only temporary until you get medication to help with your flare up so you’re able to lay back down again
