With the Zidoo it can easily handle special tags for different versions of a particular movie. You can customize it with the filename code. This is useful for movies that are spread across two 4k discs, or seperate discs for theatrical and extended versions. Does this support that? I already ordered one of these, and to be honest I expected it to be snappier than it appears to be. Hoping for the best.
Looks very nice but too expensive. I have an oppo 4k player that also has 3.0 usb where I dock my 18TB HDD. I have all my movies under specific directories. Unfortunately, no icons/pix of movies. But, loads extremely fast because of a 7200 rpm HDD.

Brick and mortars are already dropping them, and I believe Australia won't even get at least some releases at all. It's a dying concept, which is frankly disastrous. Nothing else on the market comes close for quality except Kaleidescape - and while I'd enjoy that system I'm sure the cost is just ruinous. Constantly buying media is already expensive but forking up thousands upon thousands up front just sucks and it's more money I could be spending on the media.
Thank so much for this video. When it comes to me I have learned my lesson from Zappiti. Such a let-down. This is the same comp - with a name change. Lovely video and thank you again.
I don't know if you guys noticed this but this unit is the Zappiti Neo relabeled as R_volution. I have the neo and this is a duplicate with the same connections out back. It even cost the same as the original cost of the Neo. I've since purchased a Zidoo Z2600 and boxed up my Zappiti because I did not want to wake up one day and my movies not work when I want to use it.
I also own the Zappiti Neo as well and paid $899 for it back in April of this year. There are some differences though minus the R_volution logo. The power light is no longer on the front left panel as well as the power input is no longer a 12 Volt barrel connection.
Yes - This app is coming for the Zapitti as well as its th esame team (sadly its going to be charged for but a trival ammount) not sure why you think your movies wouldnt work however - worse case is th explorer would need to be used so no screen wall.
thanks for this look into the new product both as a replacement for Zappiti and as a new piece of gear. Short of the long loading time for the film it looks promising. But as a replacement for the Zappiti software it seems to be missing some key items that made the slow Zappiti worth putting up with. I will be interested to see your follow up video when you have time. thanks so much
@@Youthman thanks, the ability to edit metadata, edit poster art, and have access via a pc/mac app. to fine tune the collection. Also, retest the film loading times since what was much slower than the old software.
@@williamdepalma8349That would future proof it. If they ever went under you could add your own artwork and manually enter the detail information. No need to rely on a server. I’m sure they’ll never go for it.
Doesn't look like a bad solution, but I'm still going to use a small PC with a graphics card with the Kodi software and MadVR filters installed. The more powerful the GPU, the more of the MadVR stuff you can enable. Only works on ripped files played through the PC but that's not bad, for the low low cost of free (except for the PC with Windows on it of course). Remote control requires a tad bit of elbow grease but nothing major, just buy a FLIRC IR-receiver and plug in via USB and you can use a normal remote - and FLIRC also makes a really cheap Skip 1s remote control that can do scenes and stuff, perhaps something to review? I just got my remote, it has a decent quality feel but I have yet to get it set up.
I don’t think any device is going to be an HTPC replacement. The trade off is an HTPC has to be built, configured etc so there’s a lot more time involved.
Hey Michael, thanks for the review! Always curious about other media players out there. Not sure if you've reviewed the Zidoo units but for the past year I've been using a Zidoo UHD3000 in my dedicated cinema room. Its has a nice interface, web ui, XMOS+ESS9068 DAC and loads faster than this unit.
When you say "it stores the artwork on the device" - Obviously you were setting up for the first time and you could it 'loading' the poster art for the films from your hard drive... If you turn the player off and on again does and scroll through the poster wall, is the art all there now or is it like on the Zappiti where you see it lag as it load the artwork?
It definitely looks snappy to navigate. After those movie posters loaded the first time on a page, if you change to another page and come back, will the posters still be there or do they have to reload?
The best feature with zappiti was the ipad app, where you could see all your collection and also use as a remote. That was the big deal. I don’t think the r-evolution does it

It's something I may be interested in as an upgrade to Kodi and an alternative to Plex. few off the top questions, does it require a local drive to store the meta data/do this by default, or can/does it use internal flash. My issue with the Shield/kodi app on my Sony Tv is the meta data fills up the internal flash because my library is so large. Another thing, I have 3 shields plus the sony tv Kodi app, they all maintain separate libraries and changes are not synced between devices. Since you are creating and logging into an account on a server, if I get a 2nd device, will my library automatically sync and download, or will it need to re-read all my meta data again, and will changes like personal categories sync between devices? The interface is nice and the cover art is cool to have, but are there other views? sometimes I just want a compact a-z list of just titles, or maybe titles with meta data like genre, year file specs, would like you to explore other interface options if they exist. One thing Kodi doesn't seem to do is proper ISO /bdmv directory parsing, so it would be nice to see that in action, do you get proper menu rendering and playback, and just let us know if you have any other performance issues. I get semi frequent playback issues with my setup like a temporary audio pause and black screen, like it looses the handshake or signal, it's not a buffer, just a hiccup, I've wondered if a better player would resolve that, hard to say of course, so much in the a/v chain, but anything you experience would be great to know in future videos. It looks like it will locate your movie directory on a NAS as well, wouldl need to know what protocalls it supports, is it just dlna, SMB, etc. Thanks for the first hands knowledge and demonstrations.
Hi Michael. Big fan of the channel. For this demo, you connected the player to external drive to access the media. Have you tried to connect to a NAS? My nVidia Shield with Plex was buggy and occasionally wouldn’t play my media files. Someone just posted today in one of the Facebook groups that they and others were having issues with Plex. It’s always been hit or miss for me.
@@YouthmanI think, I can guess when you tried it. There was a bump, around the time when it was moved from Android 11. Now, in last ~1.5-2 years, the Shield is a gold standard. It plays everything natively. Always. With no issues, no surprises, no hiccups. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a replacement for it. The decade-old nVidia Tegra is ancient, comparing to modern ARMs like Rockchips. But where it lacks the compute power, it all compensated by the well-maintained software. Many home theater enthusiasts consider a NAS->Shield/Plex->A/V receiver as a default pipeline. It would be nice to have a baseline for the comparisons and reviews. But it needs to be demo'd by someone experienced. The setup is not plug-and-play. It usually involves some older generation rack servers, with SAS shelf, running 100+TB of capacity in ZFS. All the software part is orchestrated in containers. If someone explains their media setup with these buzzwords, that would be a good candidate for a baseline of what Plex/Shield can do.
Looking at the specs they seem to be older. Not hdmi 2.1, yes we don’t watch at 120Hz but thinking about future proof. 1Gbps Ethernet seems 2.5 or 10 would be nicer.
Good review of a promising Media Player my big question is since I have never owned a Media Player before such as the Zappiti how many movies will this new Media Player hold??? I have over 10K physical movies and a growing collection of now 4K HDR movies well over a 1000 alone this player sounds impressive by your review but how many movies in a hard-drive will it hold? Oh P.S. yoour link to order the R_volution does not work????
Does it support full bd menus? The Zidoo claims to but actually doesn’t and there are a lot of upset customers on various forums. I think that only the Dune players have full support that I know of. Would be great if this did too
Something like this looks like an interesting option, I currently just use my network storage server for all my media and stream them directly on my HTPC. Main problem for me doing that currently anyway, is HDR to SDR (Older OLED TV) would be the problem or not getting 3D movie support for my old 3D TV without running the disc through my PS3/PS4. So this device seems like it could be appealing if I could simply keep using my network storage server as the primary source.
Great review, Michael. I saw this was coming soon in your podcast- had a pretty good idea what it was. Looks like a nice unit that would be a good option for someone with the right use-case and on the market for a player right now. I have a Zidoo like some of your other followers, and have been (mostly) happy with it, other than lackluster reliability with ISO playback. Any notable takeaways with regard to format (UHD/BD ISO)? It would be nice if some mention of DSD was in the spec, but I bet most of the target market already has another player with support for that if they care about it. Keep it up.
@@David25522 Yes, but it's spotty. Some play just fine, others have issues. It's hit and miss. I still tend to store everything as ISO for archival purposes, and you can still play the main title even for files that aren't cooperating, but the menus can be unpredictable. As far as I know, that sort of behavior is typical across the Android- based players. YMMV depending on device and source.
Hi. Thank you for review! I'm in S.Korea and there's no many file player option. So using Shield pro with KODI as file player, can you simply compare its output QUALITY (Video and Audio)? Is this player worth for the price? (the price is not big deal to me) Looking forward your advice!!

Hi Michael. I have always liked your channel. This may sound like a stupid question, but with this item, you have to somehow record the video disk that you own to a hard drive? Would that not take a long time to do as opposed to just popping in the media to a player? I like to idea, but I am kind of confused. Hopefully you can help me out and shed some light. Thank you.
It’s definitely not a stupid question. Yes you are correct, this device plays media that you have ripped from your collection. This is beneficial for those who have large media collections that want to organize them and catalog them, and have easy access. Think of someone that has 1000 movies in their collection. Unless you’re super organized, sometimes it’s difficult to find the movie you want to watch or to even browse through your collection.
I went to their website and saw this: "Easy and Fast File Transfers: up to 90 MB/s via SATA and USB 3.1 / 115 MB/s via Ethernet." Are they using a SATA1 interface, which is rated at 150MB/s. What happens when someone uses a large SSD for quicker access? Maybe I am getting ahead of myself and they are just quoting the average speed of a HDD. Even the slowest USB 3.1 Gen 1 is rated a 5Gb/s or 650MB/s. No wonder Adele took 17 secs to load.
I have the Max Vision 4K. It is my understanding that it is the best of this group for ISO files. The interface is a little older, and you cannot customize it too much. One nice feature is that the library is local on the machine, so no lag. Based on this demo, I would say that the Dune loads much faster. Finally, you can put 2 hard drives (2.5 or 3.5 inch) directly into it, and then see them as network drives on a PC. Quality is stunning for both video and audio .. with bitrates comparable to disks if you have a full disk rip. Price is a bit lower, but I had my unit shipped by air freight from Hong Kong (very fast but costly.)
No, this is not a streaming device. It organizes, catalogs, and plays your digital media from either an internal hard drive, or an external hard drive.
So, what exactly happened with Zappiti and now this new company? Did they get bought out by a new company or did they shut down and re-open under a new name?
Bankruptcy... but one former guy comes up with this "new" brand, BUT the same principle: you need a token to connect and stay connected to their new cloud... so, as I wrote previously, if anything goes wrong, you'll be f**ked again...

I was interested, until i saw the video ..I own 2 modded oppos , that do the job quicker, without all that clutter. All that fanart ..would take forever updating on my server , and most films these days are watched then deleted, or saved seperatly for storage. So saying that , but for my 2 oppos , I would splash out on something like this...especially when you cant get an oppo anymore ..for a second hand one you could by 2 or 3 of this R_VOLUTION player.
I still don't understand the use of these devices. I rip my blurays to a hard drive and connect it directly to my tv and play them with the same quality as the bluray. The only problem I see is that the TV only decodes HDR from the mkv and not dolby vision. I think that's the only difference with having these devices. But they are quite expensive compared to just plugging the external drive into the TV. Otherwise and as always, excellent video!
The workaround for that is to put the Blu Ray in your Blu Ray player, and route it through your processor and then to your video display device. It’s not like you have to flip the Blu Ray over halfway through or anything.
@@declanfarber Having the files on Hard Drive and being able to play from them is good back up as well. I have had DVDs suffer disc rot. These players upscale well, better than most disc players. It prevents disc damage and player wear. Also on the lower end of players the triple layer 4K discs have a nasty habbit of locking up.. Another plus is library storage. Having it all on the drive/s keeps it in one small space while you keep your discs in storage and out of site to please the spouse. Convenience of picking and viewing like a streaming service with the quality of discs. As for costs? Look at Zidoo.

One thing it doesnt do, play UHD disk! How much would it be to add drivebay to really have all in one solution for one media? Can you btw add streaming platforms like Netflix?
The PlayerOne is a media player, not a hub for streaming services like Netflix. You can add the hard drive of your choice. Check their website for maximum file size.
I am talking about the Dune players. They play 1:1 rips with Atmos, Dolby Vision, etc. and they support Android Apps. You really do get the best of both worlds this way.
That’s great to hear. I do not have any experience or knowledge other than the name of dune players, so I wasn’t aware of its capability. I thought you were referring to something like an Nvidia shield or an Apple TV. I was merely stating it’s not designed to try to compete with them because that’s not their market. But in the same regard, it’s still not trying to be a streaming player. If you want an all in one solution to be able to do that, the dune might be a great option for you.
Yes, that is what they are currently working on. They are hoping to have it available in November. I believe it will be $50 per year for Zappiti, Dune, and Zidoo products.
If it’s the same as the zappiti which I’m guessing it is then most likely 16TB internal. External max storage for drives will depend on your NAS but I don’t use anything higher than 20TB drives
It’s on their website. “The R_volution PlayerOne comes with an internal hard drive bay capable of hosting up to 16 TB of movies (USB extension possible), TV shows and music files, dual HDMI outputs and offers astonishing picture and sound quality to meet requirements of the most demanding Home theater users.” “HDD Slot With its 3.5 "SATA hot-swap rack, the PlayerOne is capable of supporting up to 16TB of data internally; the equivalent of about 400 Blu-rays or 200 Ultra HD Blu-ray (bit perfect) on a single hard disk. And as it is possible to exchange hard drives, you have no capacity limit! With the PlayerOne, you no longer need to worry about storage problems. R_video can manage one collection for each drive or one collection for all your drives as you wish. Hard drive not included.” “HDD Rack Enclosure Option: Easily and quickly insert and exchange internal 3.5'' SATA hard drives up to 16 TB (18 and 20 TB are supported only if you are using 2 partitions).”

The new said "R_volution PlayerOne" is exactly same of Zappiti Neo (please see specifications). They only change the Logo on the front and even kept the same price. If they can sell the R_volution PlayerOne for 799€ including the software R_video with enough profit why they can not provide this software to the clients that bought them the Zappiti? I'll buy a Zidoo and leave here a chalenge to all those who were scammed by Zappiti (R_volution) Team to delate this situation and protect potential victims from fraud commited by this company and stop them from keeping making money this way. Let's share this on the social media before this farce becomes out of control.
I'm disappointed that this unit doesn't have an onboard Blu Ray disc player. At $899 MSRP I would be more comfortable buying a high quality laptop (or desktop tower) and stream from it - via from the web or stored media - although I presently don't have any stored media.
Current streaming is t near the quality of a 1:1 rip of a bluray or 4K movie. You can setup a PLEX server to use with your own media. There are pros and cons to every option. You just have to figure out what works best for you.
Shilling? I share about all types of home theater products. We are all adults and can make our own decisions if a product is right for our Home Theater.
@@Youthman Your click bait thumbnail and video tagline came across as shilling. Your content presentation of the video was just sharing information general opinion.
Another genuine question, how does my video fit this description of a shill? “A shill, also called a plant or a stooge, is a person who publicly helps or gives credibility to a person or organization without disclosing that they have a close relationship with said person or organization. Shills can carry out their operations in the areas of media, journalism, marketing, politics, sports, confidence games, cryptocurrency, or other business areas. A shill may also act to discredit opponents or critics of the person or organization in which they have a vested interest.[1][2]” I have the same “relationship” with all of the brands I have reviewed products for over the past 6 years. I’m self employed so I don’t work for any of them. Also, I always disclose if a video is sponsored. This video was not sponsored. The sponsor is Arendal Sound who is a Platinum Channel Sponsor which was disclosed in the video. Again, just trying to understand your perception of me being a shill. Have a blessed day.
@@Youthman "Ultimate" without the question mark. Makes it seem to be the be all end all instead of a question of right solution. The reality is it is more expensive than comparable players from Dune or Zidoo running on an outdated OS with older gen hardware.

Tyler is correct. Im not pushing any product. I do my best to provide enough info for viewers to decide for themselves if a product is a good fit for their budget and needs.
@@Youthman obviously push isn’t the correct word. But the video alone influences people. You know the history of the company and allot of viewers don’t. Obviously you already made that decision. I wouldn’t go near them All the best 👍
It doesn’t really seem to _do_ anything, does it. It’s just a glorified switch box with a GUI. For 900 smackers. I see the smoke, I’ll forgo the mirrors. Hard pass.
@@YouthmanI couldn’t agree with more Michael there’s no such thing! I think that it’s well worth the money. This is coming from someone who owns a Zappiti Neo.
