The movie, "Lady Sings the Blues", is a 1972 American biographical film about jazz singer Billie Holiday loosely based on her 1956 autobiography which, in turn, took its title from one of Holiday's most popular songs. It was nominated for five Academy Awards.
Diana Ross received an Oscar nomination ( 1973) for Best Actress in a Leading Role and a BAFTA nomination ( the British Oscar , 1974) for Best Actress in a Leading Role .
Always for the movie, "Lady Sings the Blues " , Diana Ross won an " NAACP Image Awards (1973 ) as " Best Actress " , won a Golden Globe ( 1973 ) as " Most Promising Newcomer " and a Golden Globe nomination as " Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama " .
The film was also screened at the 1973 CANNES (France ) Film Festival ( but was not entered into the main competition ) and in Venice Movie Festival ( Italy ) .
Just before the Oscars awarding ceremony, a journalist asked to Liza Minnelli who would win and she replied : "Two words, Diana Ross" !!
The film earned an estimated $9,050,000 in North American rentals in 1973 , a record at time !
In 1973, Ross' album " LADY SINGS THE BLUES ", reached the # 1 in the USA Billboard album and remained in the charts 54 weeks ! In USA, the album sold over 2 millions records and Diana Ross, in 1974, won an AMERICAN MUSIC AWARD in the category best "Album Pop / Rock " .
It was the first time that, in the American charts, a jazz / blues album reached the # 1 in the pop charts. The album, peaked at # 5 in CANADA, at # 43 in AUSTRALIA and at # 50 in UK, where the album sold over 100.000 copies and, in 1974, was certified by BPI, GOLD record.
The nominations were for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Diana Ross), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Carl Anderson, Reg Allen), Best Costume Design, Best Music, Original Song Score and Adaptation (Gil Askey) and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced .
The same year, Motown released a hugely successful soundtrack double-album of Ross' recordings of Billie Holiday songs from the film, also titled Lady Sings the Blues.
Vincent Canby of The New York Times described Ross as "an actress of exceptional beauty and wit, who is very much involved in trying to make a bad movie work ... her only apparent limitations are those imposed on her by a screenplay and direction seemingly designed to turn a legitimate legend into a whopper of a cliché."
Variety wrote that "for the bulk of general audiences, the film serves as a very good screen debut vehicle for Diana Ross, supported strongly by excellent casting, handsome '30s physical values, and a script which is far better in dialog than structure."
Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four, writing that Ross had given "one of the great performances of 1972" and observing that the film "has most of the clichés we expect-but do we really mind clichés in a movie like this? I don't think so."
Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune also awarded three out of four stars, writing, "The fact that 'Lady Sings the Blues' is a failure as a biography of legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday doesn't mean it can't be an entertaining movie. And it is just that-entertaining - because of an old fashioned grand dame performance by Diana Ross, late of the pop-rock scene, in the title role." Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times wrote that Ross gave "one of the truly fine screen performances, full of power and pathos and enormously engaging and sympathetic." Pauline Kael of The New Yorker wrote that "when the movie was over I wrote 'I love it' on my pad of paper ... Factually it's a fraud, but emotionally it delivers. It has what makes movies work for a mass audience: easy pleasure, tawdry electricity, personality-great quantities of personality." Tom Milne of The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote that Ross did "a remarkable pastiche job on the tone and timbre of Billie Holiday's voice, [but] misses the elegant, almost literary wit of her phrasing," and found the presentation of Holiday's life story "offensively simplistic."

Hey Karen Broadway-Wilson, I 100% agree with you. Blacks were still heavily discriminated against and were excluded from being highly considered. Her performance was so strong that they had to nominate her and unfortunately, she finished second runner-up. However, in their eyes she did win, on paper, they just did not want to vote in her favor. Dynamic performance! I don't believe in a bunch of writers and producers that are hand pick to validate someone's worthiness. When you know your worth personally then that is self- sufficient in my eyes. I think she realizes that.

@@73grapes , Yes, to a degree, you are pretty much o point because Diana was very selective on what roles she would play in and who and what she would portray. Also, It's very difficult when your a renowned and known more for setting the spin and tone on music that helped shape Pop culture. The Motown sound was so profound, the Supremes were the epitome of Global Success, and it really changed the landscape, so she had been devoted to more of a music career anyway, even after she made Mahogany and the Wiz in the late 70s. She said that racism was still a big issue during the 80s and early early 90s, and Hollywood was not all that kind to her. Therfore, she was not invited to many parties. However, we all know that she can act and that's truly all that matters.

I've seen some people and critics consider Ross's performance as "Overacting and over the top." Clearly, they never seen life in a more realistic point of view. I've seen people react exactly like this in real life and on the internet. It's scary and absolutely heartbreaking. Ross not winning the Oscar for her brilliant performance is brutal. Shame on the damn Academy! She gave one of the most unforgettable performances I've ever seen. No offensive to Liza Minnelli, but I saw nothing special about her performance. The dance numbers and the singing are great, but it's forgettable. I don't even remember what 'Cabaret' was about. I didn't care for it. In my opinion, Ross was the absolut winner that year. I wish she given better and more movie roles. She's a great actress! I like her more as an actress than a singer (Loved her when she was with The Supremes). I don't know if she retired from acting, but hopefully she will be given a great film or television role soon.

At the time when this movie was done she received a lot of backlash from Black people especially when it was announced that she would do the film. She also stay at it that she didn’t try to mimic her singing, but learning her phrasing in so far as the lyrics. I think that she got the spirit of Billie holiday for the times you have to remember this was 1972 and even though Barry Gordy was able to buy the film but he also face limitations for being the outsider in Hollywood. Her performance was brilliant nuanced and capture the spirit of who Billie holiday was

I seen Lady Sings The Blues in the 70’s I was a kid. My father always took me to the movie Theater that was our time together. When I seen this movie I loved it but I had no idea how the real Billie Holiday looked! There was no Google to look her up so I went to the Library and that’s when I learned all I can about her. The first thing I seen was that Diana didn’t look anything like Billie!… lol that’s when I learned that a actress or actor doesn’t have to look just like the the person they are protraying just as long as they tell the story right enough to convince the audience. My father told me there will never be another Billie Holiday but Ms. Ross was good enough. My point is the movie was good and till this day I still listen to the soundtrack from the movie and Billie Holiday is my favorite blues singer. Diana is a remarkable singer and actress to this day.

Lady Sings The Blues was definitely the best of all 3 films up for the academy Awards that year, even Liza Minnelli thought Diana would win, the thing is, cabaret was about Germany during World war II, Liza's Mother Judy Garland had died 3 years before, Motown and Ross were considered outsiders from the old studio system, had that movie been made later in the 70's or 80' that movie would have swept up the awards.

Yes. While Diana did an incredible job as Billie, I didn’t feel like I was watching Billie. It felt very much like Diana but more rugged. Andra Day definitely favors Billie Holiday more and embodied her to the fullest in her speaking voice and vocal abilities. I haven't seen the new movie, the one thing I notice a lot is the hair style, Billie Holiday wore her hair in a long ponytail, Diana said she didn't try to imitate Billie, she just tried certain ways of style that would give some feel of Billie's delivery, Nobody will ever top Diana's performance, legendary.

In 2007, it was released a DVD of "Lady Sings The Blues". The movie, "Lady Sings the Blues", is a 1972 American biographical film about jazz singer Billie Holiday loosely based on her 1956 autobiography which, in turn, took its title from one of Holiday's most popular songs. It was nominated for five Academy Awards. The nominations were for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Diana Ross), Best Art Direction-Set .Decoration (Carl Anderson, Reg Allen), Best Costume Design, Best Music, Original Song Score and Adaptation (Gil Askey) and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced . The film was also screened at the 1973 CANNES (France ) Film Festival, but was not entered into the main competition. The same year, Motown released a hugely successful soundtrack double-album of Ross' recordings of Billie Holiday songs from the film, also titled Lady Sings the Blues. @@screenactorsguilable Oh please. The film LSTB ushered in a Billie Holiday discovery for many in 1972-1973. Her records started selling like crazy, and the public came to appreciate her more. Nothing trivial about it. Ross did not disrespect Holiday in any way. Ross is an iconic legend in her own right, whether you like her or not.
