You may be surprised at the real causes of acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD.
Timestamps:
0:00 The real causes of acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD
2:10 Let’s take a closer look at achlorhydria, a condition in which you have no stomach acid
3:48 The problem isn’t too much acid it’s acid that’s splashing up into your esophagus
If you have acid reflux, heartburn, or GERD, this is the video for you.
When you look up the official cause of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder) it will tell you it’s because of loss of pressure between the sphincter on top of the stomach and the stomach.
When you look up the cause of heartburn it will say it’s a symptom of GERD caused by acid reflux. What? The cause of acid reflux is officially “not sure”. Could be pregnancy. Or smoking, obesity, or a hiatal hernia.
Because there’s so little clarity people end up managing their own symptoms with medications such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors, and H2 receptor blockers. All of these reduce the acid in your stomach but they have some potentially serious side effects including but not limited to:
●C diff (a bacterial infection)
●Osteoporosis
●Kidney stones
●Vomiting
●Allergies
●Achlorhydria, which can occur with all three of these types of medications
Let’s take a closer look at achlorhydria, a condition in which you have no more stomach acid. Its side effects include:
●GERD
●Acid reflux
●Heartburn
●Decreased B12
●Constipation
●Decreased magnesium
●Decreased zinc
So the medications that cause achlorhydria are in turn causing acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD.
Too much stomach acid results in different conditions such as sour stomach and acid stomach which could lead to gastritis. The normal stomach pH is 1-3 out of a scale that goes to 14. You can’t get a more acidic fluid than 1! So it’s not too much acid, the problem is acid that’s splashing up into the esophagus because of the valve that isn’t properly closing. It’s controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Which means we really have an autonomic nervous system problem which is then wrongly treated with antacids.
So let’s take another look at the causes of achlorhydria. They include the microbe H pylori which depletes stomach acid. As well, they include decreased zinc, decreased potassium and sodium, and decreased chlorides among others.
Since achlorhydria causes the 3 conditions, what happens if we add acid back into the stomach? The conditions go away. Take apple cider vinegar and betaine hydrochloride to help heal acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD along with the nutrients mentioned above.

I was diagnosed with GERD in my mid 20's. I took a daily dose of omeprazole for more than 2 decades. Then I discovered apple cider vinegar. along with low carb and IF, heartburn is very rare now, and when it does pop up, a single shot of apple cider vinegar & the symptoms are gone instantly! 54 and never felt this good

Excellent video. My brother-in-law developed tracheal cancer because of this condition. He took loads of antacids for 20 years to fight his acid reflux, and this habit actually caused the cancer. The surgery was devastating. He became a human science project. He survived, but the cost was immense. He needed this info from Dr Berg, who is doing more good with his You Tube channel than most doctors do in their entire careers. Thanks, doc!

I suffered from GERD for over 25 years when I went through a divorce and I've been on acid reflux medication for that long. Last July 2018 I started to watch Dr Berg and started IF then OMAD and have lost 83 pounds so far. I was still on Nexium and was afraid to try acv; but when Dr Berg said to try it and if your stomach hurts that means you have an ulcer I decided to give it a try. I started with one tablespoon of avc in 8oz of water in the morning in the first week and progress to 2 tablespoon of avc in the morning , after my noon omad meal and before bedtime. I haven't taken any acid reflux medication in six weeks and my digestion is so much better. Thank you so much Dr Berg for the great free service you're doing for this community.

Dear Doctor Eric. Thank you for your informative video on acid reflux. I was having a problem with this and I looked up information on the internet and some of the things it was saying were don't eat tomatoes, tomato based products and lose weight and some other things I can't remember but the doctor I was going to ,who I quit wanted to give me a proton inhibitors which I said no I will not start doing that because I'm not really a person that jumps to Medicine. But then I looked up information on the proton inhibitors and found out that there is some nasty rebound when you want to come off these inhibitors. It's a doggone shame that patients have to become their own doctors to to properly take care of themselves but I am grateful so grateful to you that you break it down step-by-step so we can understand how we can help our bodies. Much appreciated Celia

My sister-in-law, now 70 years old, began gobbling Tums as a youngster. Baking soda was used, as well. When 'the purple pill' became a thing, she took that, too. She STILL suffers! Many years ago, I read that MOST cases of these conditions were related to too little stomach acid, NOT too much. Doctors simply don't test a patient's stomach acid levels before prescribing medications. Believe me, I tried to tell her these things, to no avail. I keep saying that I'm giving up on trying to help people. Unfortunately, I tend to keep opening my mouth and am rebuked for my efforts. Thankfully, I do have a few like minded friends that I can safely share these topics with. Of course, there are many people here on this channel that I feel free to discuss these things with. I'm VERY grateful for that!! May God bless you all for wanting to know the truth and sharing your nuggets of knowledge with the rest of us! MANY thanks to Dr. Berg for helping SO many of us, as well!!!

I had been giving myself Apple Cider Vinegar daily, but seemed to develop a sour stomach from it after a couple of months, so I stopped it. That is when things actually became worse! to the point where one night I had to go to ER with the severe pain. Your points are well taken. another symptom you can add is chronic throat clearing (I get this alot) when I take digestive enzymes the throat clearing goes away which is how I know it is my stomach causing the throat clearing not allergies. also I believe that the bacteria you speak of is the result of low acid not hte cause, microbes get blamed so much for things whenthey are at the scene ofthe crime. I dont get alot of burning except a tiny bit in the lower part of the esohphgus, but the throat clearing is very annoying sometimes disturbing my sleep. throat clearing can be exhausting when your trying to hike a trail and it just wont stop and then suddenly it stops. weird.

I find that when I'm told the "what" as in what is causing the condition I'm able to then work on the "how" how to fix or make better. Doctors immediately put you on medication and rush you out of their offices. Your video has so much information and your process of how you figure medical conditions is brilliant and yet its easy to follow. Thank you.

My father and paternal grandmother both had GERD. Neither smoked, my dad particulary was fit and kept the smae weight all his life. He was still plastering ceilings in his mid-70's. I remember him having white chalky line around his lips as he constantly chewed antacid tablets because of his problem. Both dad and grandma died of stomach/liver cancer. A few years ago I developed Gerd. Again, not over-weight and not a smoker. So I concluded it was down to genetic disposition towards it. i knew I had to do something about it the inflammation and certainly didn't want to take drugs. (i was mindful that dad's chalky tablets covered up and didn't cure the problem.) So I looked at diet. My dad struggled with some foods and so that was the clue. I researched Keto and low carb. I didn't go full Keto but I drastically cut carbs (wheat was a major problem) but the number one cause of the inflammation was seed oils and margarine. I switched to all good fats like butter and coconut oil and olive oil. I cured my reflux. Just occasionally it comes back and that is entirely due to me eating something I didn't cook myself which has seed oil involved. Reassuring in a way because it proves I have the right culprit.

I’ve even trained my body to not turn over on my right side until at least 3 o’clock in the morning while sleeping. Any time before that instant acid reflux. Of course we all know why that is. White vinegar and some olive oil to make bean salads works great. An occasional mixed lettuce salad with oil and red wine vinegar works well too. In non-USA countries, the surgery is usually free, but let's not talk loose-skin surgery, but before the weight loss journey starts, eating less/no protein might result in the body eating up the loose skin as you go along on your weight loss journey. If that is true, what about Autophagy on will experience on 20h-23h fasting?? Wouldn't the body eat skin as well while in autophagy? True. I believe there is a point of no return. Losing 40 lbs in your 30's is not the same as losing 40 lbs in your 60's. With age, the turn-over rate of repair declines. But there is 1 thing that I believe has helped me tighten my arm flab and that is Colostrum (maybe the Growth Hormones in it) and/or Glutathione. I've lost weight in the past and the arm flab remained, this time around it is slowly getting tighter and I can't for sure say that this is it but thought it'd be worth mentioning. It gives me another subject to study :) In the past my method of weight loss was calorie restriction without added nutrients/supplements. This time I did Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto + IF + all of the needed nutrients he mentions in all of his videos combined (Nutritional Yeast, Cod Liver Oil, Collagen Peptides, Sea Kelp, Red palm Oil, K2, Colostrum, DIM, Glutathione, Choline, Wwheat Grass Juice, etc)

I was diagnosed with GERD 20 years ago. Tried meds on and off with no real relief. Was recently taking tums every night to be able to lay down to sleep. Had a lot of reflux during the day. Started lemon and ACV water 7 weeks ago and the reflux is 98% gone. I mostly notice it after I have carbs, and even then it’s so minor I hardly notice it. I also started doing intermittent fasting (not great at it yet but do get around 14 hours of fasting each day) and eating more keto meals. I don’t do full keto, but the changes in most of my eating has greatly improved so many things. Drinking the ACV in the water was rough at first because I hate the smell, but now I hardly notice it and actually crave the drink. Dr. Berg is my hero ♥️♥️

Apple cider vinegar with honey has basically cured him overnight. He enjoyed a glass of wine last night no problem and is sleeping like a baby. Low acid stomach needs alkalizing acids. Anyone looking to see if it'll cure symptoms? Take a spoonful straight. If it works almost immediately then you're likely low acid not too much acid. Our GP was clueless. Docs these days don't care and they certainly don't like natural remedies. It's all about the mighty dollar.

After watching this video i bought me a bottle of apple cider vinegar. Taking two table spoons per day (before breakfast and dinner) combined with half glass of water. Horrible taste. But some magic happend. My acide reflux and heart burn faded away in two days! As if i can breath again. What a relief. Thank you Dr. Eric Berg and greetings from The Netherlands!

Hello Dr. Berg. I am following Low-Carb and IF for the last 2 year. Six months back I started to feel Globus sensation which goes away few hours after I eat carbohydrates. Then around 48-72 hours after I cut carbohydrates, sensation comes back. I have experimented for the last few months and the result is always the same. Any idea what the trigger would be for the sensation on a low-carb and why it goes away almost immediately when I eat carbs (wholemeal bread, pasta) ?

globus sensation? what is that? your body is crying for carbs, low carb was never meant to be a permenant diet,

Hi Dr. Berg , so for a sour tasting acid reflexing up to the throat you still have to drink some thing acidic instead of a cold cup of milk , it's so hard to do !

Thank you so much for the information! So what if you still have Gerd but your blood work came back with only a vitamin D deficiency? They never checked B3, but my B12, magnesium, sodium, chloride were all fine... I take a multivitamin everyday with 4000iu of vitamin D. What other supplements should I be taking with these if any? And should I be using lemon in my acv or should I just dilute with water?

I was on proton pump inhibitors for three years due to gerd, you’re only supposed to be on them for up to six weeks. I healed the root cause of my gerd.If anyone wants to get off medicine and heal themself its a very easy fix. I suffered quite a bit before I found the simple solution.low hydrochloric acid and unfortunately the meds make it worse. Ginger pickles to build up your stomach acid. Works wonders, I’ve never had another lick of heartburn or gerd since.

From experience, having suffered from Acid Reflux for years, it was caused by stress. Immediately, after I dealt with the stressors in my life, I eliminated AR, together with slight adjustments to my food intake.
