i’m going to be a college freshman in the fall and this is lowkey comforting because i feel like every college video is peaches and cream but then i talk to my college friends and they’re like “omg i’m so tired and my roommate is driving me up the wall and i have 3 essays due at the end of this weekend” and then i’m like :o so thank you for actually being honest! i feel better knowing that i’ve seen your good times and your bad times and i’m able to realistically look forward to college w/o rose colored glasses

Well as a person who as finished college. I can say i didn’t get a job in my major.... BUT it was not worthless so many adult skills I learned in college made the experience worth it. I took 7 accelerated classes in one semester to finish early. (Accelerated means you go to class every day for a month.) I managed to keep my grades up and have a part time job. Still my proudest accomplishment to date. The effort put into college can be very rewarding. Hang in there ❤️

I go to Georgetown in DC, about to graduate actually in a month, and I remember sitting in my major departments' common area when the scandal investigation came out and I come from a working class family and I got in on a lot of financial scholarships. Me and my friends were psyched it was finally coming out that these kids bribed to get into school, because we all knew it, we all knew some of the kids involved. We were NOT surprised at all. In fact.. there were some international students who went on spring break after the news came out and did not come back to school lol.. anyway, all this to say, I'm super psyched for your film. Congrats and good luck with it and the rest of college!!

Thank you for your videos! They are always the perfect blend of funny and grim. I have a question in general for everyone. Why don't people coming out of high school wait until they are internally motivated by curiosity and a thirst/passion for learning to come to college? This isn't meant to be personal against you, Ris, your video just brought up the question for me. Why has university become a thing young people (and frankly their parents and teachers) force themselves to do? Why do people go to college immediately before developing the internal hunger to learn from experts in the field they are interested it? It's much more gratifying for the teachers as for the students if everyone is in a learning environment for the express purpose of going deeper, passing on knowledge and encountering new modes of thinking. I am sad that university has become a requisite step. Just something to do, or even a brand to attach to a personhood. In America, the schools act as for-profit cattleyards for the bright youth of this country to schlep through, instead of performing their original function: To be a place for knowledge and skill to pass from one generation to the other. Perhaps I am overly romantic in my view. I would encourage every single person who doesn't feel excited about college, or is only there to get it over with or appease family/society, to consider leaving. Come back when and if you have the passion and energy to learn and be guided in what is, at its core, a very ancient medieval guild. Your professors will thank you, you will thank you. One is never too old to go college or university. My experience is that classrooms and learning environments are fortified when filled with people from different ages and economic backgrounds. Why don't people getting out of high school just wait? I never planned to go to college after high school, but a year after graduating high school found myself thirsty to learn more in life. I went to college then. My passion was palpable and I made strong connections with professors that last until this day. Waiting a few years to go to graduate school afterwards was also great. I took my time. I've had a rich and robust international academic artistic life without ever sensing the dirging exhaustion of the obligation of school that many young people feel. Do high schoolers go right to college because going into the world without college is so frowned upon in some places? Or because there is not another structural option of things to do? Does there just not exist an appealing alternative? I'm curious to know what anyone thinks about this. Thank you!

I can relate so much with the ‘why do I go to college’ thing. I am a psych major, and i still have to do about 2 years for my bachelors and then 2 for my masters degree. But all I want to do is become a filmmaker, my parents made me go to Uni so I would get a degree and pursue film projects afterwards. But it sucks when your only motivation is that it’s your backup plan

REAL TALK as a person with parents who do not have college degrees it is still worth it to have at least a Bachelors because there are so many jobs and opportunities that require a person has a BA in something. Even if it's not in the field you are working in. HOWEVER, you don't need to brush past the idea of a gap year. I'm in the tail end of my gap year and I am feeling so grateful that I made that choice and I am ready to attend school again in the fall. There's also a lot of schools that adopt more self-directed learning opportunities if you ever need to transfer somewhere that is more conducive to your learning style, even though the transfer process is a lil scary at first

Wow I love the honesty, I somehow keep myself semi-motivated to do my work but I think about dropping out all the time and my tuition is so high that every time I think about my university (at this point, living off campus and being all online, I feel only marginally attached to the institution) I get so furious I want to start shit-talking it online to a bunch of strangers online lol. Also getting rejected from all the internships you applied for sucks big-time.

Wait that was not a productive day ?! If I did all that in a day, I would be proud of myself... I mean laundry + going out more than twice + classes + essayyyyyv...that's a completely productive day

Honest to god ris, the two years left will literally fly by. It might have also been the covid times stuff, but I feel like I just entered my junior year but now I am suddenly picking out my senior classes and applying for grad schools. i don't know if this is what you wanna hear exactly..but your videos about college honestly make me feel a lot better about my plan to just go to a community college this fall. everyone i know got into great schools and applied for scholarships but i've been struggling so much with my mental health and some other stuff the last couple years that i just,,,never got around to any of it. i'm so disappointed (bc i'm sick of living with homophobic parents and i thought college would be my chance to get away from that) and even though i know community colleges are perfectly good schools, i'm still embarrassed at not meeting my teacher's and parent's expectations. i already do so much of what you described here (sleeping through classes and being so behind on work have been huge problems for me this year) and i know i'm not going to magically turn myself around in one summer so i'm sure those things would just get worse if i was at a super competive school. a lot of people try to give me some vaguely motivational talk about "you can do it bc you're so smart!!" so seeing someone be more honest about what college is like makes me feel like i'm making the right choice. thank you for that and i hope you feel better/it gets easier to deal with soon.

All the other college vlogs have them prepping and eating healthy meals 2-3 times a day, and here I am, barely having enough time to eat one meal somedays because I have a) too much homework or b) class during the entire dining hall hours until dinner. And forget about meal prep, I have to share a kitchen with 20 other people during COVID and it's scheduled by appointment
