In the original intended ending by the author light wins. The original intended end was the death of L. But shonen jump (as always) asked the author to continue it (just like bleach).
Light's narcissism did not allow him to accept that he was defeated and he preferred death rather than surrender, but frankly, I expect that if he had been imprisoned, his fans would have taken him out, as he is one of the most beloved figures in the entire world for what he did in killing criminals.

Light was caught by a kid (near) that's ok because near was more than excellent. But how easily he caught Kira and how foolishly Kira was caught, that part is absurd and ridiculous.
You’re just young probably, there are good animes from the 60s and 70s, like Tiger Mask and Speed Racer. Then came Dragon Ball, One Piece in the 80s and 90s, and so many more. Death Note is relatively recent.
That iconic and freaking laugh gave me goosebumps when I was watching that scene .... I just started to think what if he had already found out about the plain and just playing the victim card before he vipe out all of his enemy that would be more insane I think 💀💀💀
