For me it wasn't what the marine said it was how calm he was when he said "their not coming for us are they sir" and he knew he wasn't coming home alive. True definition of staying calm in the chaos
"They are not coming for us are they sir"? nowdays, more than ever, after my military service this conversation sends shivers all over my body.. R.I.P those who died for their country, you will never be forgotten ❤
Those Brothers we left behind, such deep times that only the few will understand. But when you hear over Comms that we had Air Support, I can never show enough gratitude to them. I was humbled and we needed support and the sound of a Chinook is unmistakable! May God give me back my sanity or was that my price?
Such an amazing introduction for a character like General Hummel. Ed Harris's performance in this film was *hypnotic* if you asked me. IMHO, I believe it is his very best performance out there, and General Hummel is most definitely one of my all-time favorite movie antagonists out there, I wouldn't even dare to call him a villain.
@@travisfriedland9346 I think its bc he has motives. He is not a monster which just wants to kill. He wanted to damage the politicans, which did not care about the family of killed soldiers. He never wanted to kill anybody in his orginal plan. You see the human behind this character, who gets forced into this bc of his sense for the justice of his own men.
@@centralbiz5974 It perfectly tells you everything you need to know about who Gen. Hummel is. It also shows how Michael Bay has kind-of devolved when it comes to quality in introducing his antagonists.
Sadly it was true... I don't know of that many military commanders who are willing to be this loyal to his troops and soldiers now a days... With such an integrety and bravery to the end.
@thomasr.alstad1288 It's also so tragic to see that he left his medal on his wife's grave because he knew that despite losing his men, there was no honor at all in what he was about to do.
Someone asked why the Marines don't salute back when general Hummel salutes. The fact is that he is the one that has to salute them. An honorable officer or non commissioned officer will always salute the honor guard. Honor guards provide funeral honors for fallen comrades. The honor guard also saluted him as well, they carried their rifles on their right shoulders and as he saluted they saluted by moving their rifles out in front of them, in the military that is how you salute with a rifle.
***** You Don't Present Arms while marching. Present Arms is standing drill, not marching drill. Only the Officers present arms while marching. (Due to Officers having Ceremonial Swords)
Well, as far as i know for the US Armed Forces the Honour Guard don't have a verbal command for saluting an Honorary Officer while they march with the Colours (Regimental Flag and the National Flag, Colours is just how we say it in Canada.) They instead just typically touch the rifle's butt while marching with their right hand as if they were going to do a Present Arms Command, but instead the drill movement stops there. (I might be wrong as to how the US do it, im used to Canadian Drill, Which is much different.)
It actually has nothing to do with the Honor Guard, it's the fact that the Colors are not cased, meaning the flag they are holding while processing. Regardless of rank, the ensign is always saluted. It could've been a Pvt holding the flag and the BGen would still have to salute. The notion of salute has nothing to do with dominance, its respect. Saluting an officer is for their legal authority, returning the salute is their respect for those they lead. It's mutual. Rah.
Kevin Lynch Correct it doesn't matter what rank is present they have to salute the ensign is always saluted and yes it is out of respect for the fallen Marine, it has nothing to do with rank.
You may all like the radio communiquè, which I will agree is potent, but what shows the true character of this man is his loving nature. He didn't do what he did for his country, for his military, or for the money. This man did it for the love he felt for the brothers who died next to him and the sons he left behind that he could not get out. This aspect of love is further proven by the fact that he would not do it when his wife was around. For the love of husband and wife is stronger than any other. My favorite quote is this, "No matter what happens, PLEASE don't think less of me.
@conor mccormack there is a reason why your comment has no likes. And that reason is, that you are so dumb, that very, very few people match your level of stupidity. You are a grade a piece of shit.
"they not comming for us aren't they sir?" i cannt hold my tears back when i hear this DAM military radio communication, yes i know this is a movie but in every movie hiding a bit of truth
+scar 2k15 Im sure there were alot of brave men who gave selflessly for there country. Volunteered to be the one who went on a mission knowing they wouldn come back. General Hummel did what he thought was right. Whether he was mad or nutz, He was still dedicated to the belief that his men died and they were never recognized for there cause. Sadly this happens in today's military. Im sure theres no crazy general out there who would put american lives at risk for such a cause but those men and sometimes woman deserve to be recognized.
You always salute the honor guard, non commissioned or not. The marines did a gun salute from their right shoulder by moving their guns in front of them. My friend is a marine and told me this.
Correct it doesn't matter what rank is present they have to salute the ensign is always saluted and yes it is out of respect for the fallen Marine, it has nothing to do with rank. or who salutes who
"There's something that I got to do barb, something that couldn't do when you were there. I tried, you know i tried every thing, but didn't get their attention. let's hope this elivates their thinking. what ever happens don't think less of me" the best lines ever ,credit to Ed Harris, the director and the writer for bringing the best out. Best opening scene ever. Scene is a mix of patriotism and commitment to his wife....brings out goosebumps everytime I watch this scene. Precision to the core is how I would rate this scene.
this is one of the films where you feel sorry for the antagonist. yeah he commited treason but he wasnt insane enough to launch the gas into a civillian area if he didnt get his way, also commander anderson also understood why he was there and even agreed with his reasons.
True but the government wont admit to that. But seeing as Hummel tried to hold them to ransom thats what they will say about him, but he would have been a well known war hero and he obviously tried to get reparations for his men through the official channels so alot of people would have known him
@@thomasalvarez6456 He didn't kill anyone. All the soldiers at the depot were taken down using nonlethal force (as stated later in the film). The only casualty was of necessity, as the V-X gas would have killed everyone in the room had they not left the one Marine.
"They are not coming for us, are they, sir?" If by weird vibe you include 'shivers down my spine', I concur with you 100%. Notice the very level delivery; in contrast to the frantic 'I've lost 15 men already' voice. The speaker (likely a junior officer) is downright despondent at that point because he knows the answer to his question. He knows he and his team are being left behind. *Cue flames* (Destruction and death) *Cue brass music* (Sacrifice) Its a poignant masterpiece.
Isn't it the opposite? He's becomes a terrorist, maybe not with the intentions to do harm. But his team surely have no seconds thoughts about bombing San Fran with VX gas. Hummel put that all in motion.
I spent 6 years in the Corps Starting in 1968 Combat Engineer. Ed Harris was AWSOME & a credit to the Corps. The musical score is intense & fitting. Ed Harris DOES NOT salute The honor guard / they first Salute him ("Marching Salute") & Harris returns the salute. The technical Advisor was first rate but Harris' left collar device Was crooked...something NOT tolerated in the Corps Particularly when wearing Dress Blues. Best opening Scenes of any movie anywhere!!/ the music is Beyond compare & "fitting" ,, the rain was very symbolic & and was a crowning touch. I have been out of the Corps almost 50 years/ but it is Absolutely true: You are a Marine forever.. SEMPER Fi Do or Die!!
"I miss you so much, there's something i could not do Barb, something i couldn't do while you were here. I tried, you know i tried everything and i still don't have their attention. Let's hope this elevates their thinking but whatever happens, please don't think less of me." Best Line into the Movie
Everytime I see this opening -I get choked up ! I am a Former Marine ( Once a Marine Always a Marine !) and have two hash marks to show for it. I know its a movie ,and I have lost Bros around me. The opening with the funeral and the dress blues in the rain really screws me up ! Semper Fi ! Till I Die !
Oliver Bane I thought he only had composed the opening theme. Nick Glennie-Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams were the ones largely responsible for the score.
One of the greatest opening scene in the history of action films, if not...films in general. This short opening alone rationalized all of Hummel's decisions...and why his men were willing to follow his path. Mr. Bay, I salute you.
Everything about this movie was powerful, epic, and emotional, even with the over-the-top action scenes. And that Hummel's Marines theme music that first kicks in at 3:10... DAMN, what a score!
This movie has everything it needs to be a perfect movie, senior actors to give depth and to guide the actors (Specifically Connery and Harris) younger actors to give the need for guidance (mentoring is a must) and a great score and plot, specifically the reason for Hummel's act of "treason"
One of the best openings for an action film, especially when it transitions to the infiltration on the weapons depot scene with the amazing soundtrack coming in.
One of the best movies ever made...hands down.....saw dis as a kid...dad brought home a Vhs.....These kind of movies can make anyone fall in love with the ACTION GENRE
When Michael Bay was a fantastic director. One of Ed Harris' best roles if not his best, excellent acting. Also, Hans Zimmer's score is one of the finest there is, almost up there w. Williams.
+Jean Paul Bigio I ask myself the same thing, what happened to the Bay of "The Island" ... you start realizing that is not about the director but the writers, script writers, screenplay, screen writing, PRODUCTION
Chaotician Núñez you're not meant as a public to watch anymore wholesome and inspiring movies. there is control at the top. the best stuff is shelved. the best in creativity is now stalled, for when they want you to see.
Justin what’s your point? It doesn’t matter if there are real or not if real seals played them in the movie they have aim for shit! All of that shooting and they hit not one of Hummels men. So what is your point?
DJ C “All of the unmasked unarmored storm troopers playing the Navy SEALs” sounds like you didn’t know they were played by real SEALs, and just random actors
Micheal Bay is really the top in army movies. He really knows his job. Hollywood hasn't made a lot of good army movies. But this one along with a few other ones like Black Hawk Down , Tears of the Sun , etc. is one of my best and favorite one. Remembers me that there are men and women in this world ready to give up their lives to others.
I love Sean Connery's and Nick cage's chemistry in this movie. It made it all that bit much more better and witty with those two characters in the movie. IMO this is easily Michael Bay's very best movie!
Ed Harris and David Morse are really some of good actors. The movie is intense all the way to the end.... And this THeme is also one of the finest piece of tone.... Well done guys.....
it has been like, what? 14 years since I first saw this(I was 9 or 8 back then) and I still get goosepumps everytime I watch this opening scene with high volume and the " they are not coming for us are they sir " part comes :D
AW ya! David Morse,(Maj. Baxter) it has been a pleasure serving with you on HBO's " Treme". ( Cpl. Cardone, PM; Echo 2/5 Weapons Plt.) Till next time or season.
"The Rock" was directed by Michael Bay, music by a frequent colleague of his, Hans Zimmer. There's a certain style Bay has always had with his movies, which he tends towards with the summer films he does. "The Rock" was his 2nd flick he directed, and hey! He had explosions galore! Even when showing the title there were explosions!
