Beverly Macker is a great example of how powerful an off stage/off screen character can be without us needing to see them.

Nana is here! Liz Smith gives one of the all time great performances from here on. She is pretty much everyone's grandma rolled into one.

The testing relationship between Mother in Law and Son in Law here is not uncommon in some families here. The later episode where Nana has to stay with the Royles a while after an operation (despite Jim not wanting her there) was very familiar, and the cause of a memorable argument between him and Barbara, which Barbara wins.

I never took it that Nana was ever a liar about owning all these antiques, she's just a bit baffled and thinks the cheap stuff she probably owned is the same as the expensive items she's watching on TV.

The great thing about this series was how it just nailed typical British family life... It's so close it's spooky sometimes.

Well it’s exactly like mine. I used to think Caroline Aherne had been secretly filming us. We’re from Stockport, my dad was a scouser and the conversations were exactly like the ones my mum had with our elderly neighbours, who were always popping in for a brew.

The Queen of Sheba episode is probably one of the best hour and halves of comedy drama you'll ever see - beautifully written and both hilariously funny and poignant in equal measure.

Liz was apparently quite upset to be written out of the show but Caroline Aherne knew she wasn’t going to write much more of it so gave this amazing double episode to Liz - who gave one of the most classic performances on British TV. She lived to 95! Such a wonderful character/comic actress

Love your stuff Josh. You just keep enjoying these comedy masterpieces. Haters be damned. The Royle Family is a reminder of our own families for so many of us...a lot of it is pretty universal. My brother-in-law is our very own Jim Royle,

I’ve always loved The Royle Family. Over the top and completely bizarre comedies have their place and will always make me laugh but going back to this and it just being so relatable really puts a smile on my face. It’s the same with Still Game, whilst it’s stories are more over the top, we’ve all met old boys exactly like some of them just as most of us had family nights sat around the TV like this.

(10:59) The guy 'who kept saying 'No'' is called Joe. His wife is called Mary. In one episode, Mary's introducing themselves to a Royle family guest, by saying: "I'm Mary and my husband's Joseph - just like in the Bible. "Except that we have Cheryl ...and not Jesus". The scripting for this show is everything.

I guess you know by now, but rhyming slang is usually based on a proper name or phrase from popular culture, rather than anything too random (but not always the case). Eartha Kitt was a popular singer from the 50's onwards, and also played Catwoman for a bit in the 60's Batman TV series, so she became bit of a household name that rolls of the tongue. Somewhat unfortunate for her that it rhymes with what it does, lol, but I hope she'd appreciate it in some way.... maybe! She's in good company with Barry White (for sh1te) and countless others. Tom Tit (as used in this episode) is a type of bird.
