Important rule changes for high school wrestling starting in 2024: 1. Takedowns - Takedowns are now worth 3 points instead of 2. 2. Backpoints - It used to be 2 seconds for 2 points and 5 seconds for 3 points. It has changed to 2 seconds for 2 points and 4 seconds for 4 points. 3. Out of bounds - If either wrestler has a point of contact inside the circle, they are considered in bounds. These rules will probably be adopted by youth wrestling as well. Don't be nervous guys. That's one thing you should overcome. If it's your first time it's comment but next season new team or not I was fine. But don't worry. All you gotta do is be calm and stay awake at the same time and be ready for anything! Good luck
I like to see everyone in the comments considering doing wrestling. I have been doing wrestling for about 4 years now, freshman year of high. A couple of things you may want to take into consideration. Wrestling is a different beast. They will straight up say “this isn’t non of that fake stuff you see on TV 📺”. This is the real deal and you’ll definitely notice overtime. Now depending on your coach, wrestling is one HELL of a workout. It’s main goal before and typically after your main day of learning new moves, practicing them, and possibly a couple of wrestle offs,is a workout, and what they consider a “cool down”. Every coach is different, but for about 20 mins in,you’ll do running, maybe a couple of things, then in between somewhere you’ll do your stretches, then group around your coach for the lesson/moves for the day. Now once that’s said and done, well for me,we have a about 30 mins or an hour worth of intense body movement. Jump rope,weights,etc-etc for about an hour or 30 mins. All in all wrestling is something very intense that needs to be taking very serious. It gets your body extremely bulky/fit,your mental health is supported, you’ll sleep better, all pros it sounds right ? Well the con is the workout it’s self. Most people just can’t handle what the coaches make you do,so they just give up,but if your seriously dedicated, pay attention, and preform your best, then you’ll love the sport. It’ll give you like an adrenaline, rush in your veins, you’ll be pushing yourself in your final moments that hurt will be bothering you more than the fact it’s almost over with whatever it might be that your doing. Like I said wrestling is a different type of beast, but if,as with any sport, your consistent, adequate, progressive, and bring for thus a strong spirit, you’ll thrive and really think your going through hell while at practice, but in the end it’ll be worth it,and all those women that slept on you now, might be second guessing who they want/have heart eyes for now 😉
@Tony Montana yo would u suggest someone my age almost 16 and weigh 220 and 5'9 to do wrestling. They dont have any in my h.s but there is a wrestling gym near me i can go to. But should i go i really am dying to do it,but im scared they will say im to unfit or if they think im to big and older side to start now since i eill be 16, also to take into consideration ive already lost 40lbs in 5 months from muay thai and boxing, i could have lost more if i wanted but i want to lose it slower.
Thanks dude I missed out this year I'm in 8th grade but in doing wrestling in 9th. I'm ready for hell the first couple practices because ik every practice will get easier and I'll become mentally stronger.
I started wrestling in my junior year of high school. I still consider it to be the best thing I ever did for myself. When I was trying to convince my parents to let me wrestle, I sent them this video.
@@LifeOfMateusz I know technique is important but I'm curious, which muscles do you think are the most important in terms of giving you the upper hand?
Jason Layton Hey, just to give an update. A couple of weeks ago I went to my friends wrestling practice after school because you can just walk in to see how it is before the season started. It was fun but I didn’t have the requirements to actually join. And I didn’t want to join right away. I want to improve my physical health and learn some lessons. The coach was cool and so was everyone there. I like it. I’ll definitely think about in the future, I’ll just improve. I love this sport

starting as a senor, its my first sport ever, i’ge been weight training and athletically training in the gym for the past 2 years. cant wait to show my skills
This video was very helpful because I'm a freshman about to start wrestling but I've done 5 years of Brazilian jujitsu and I needed to understand the rules and how to win
I’m trying to find local Brazilian J for my son, all the places here seem to have a lofty focus on general karate or general martial arts. Which I find to be really unsatisfactory from my hand to hand combat experience. I want him to learn a real applicable trade sport like bjj. Can any of you boys here recommend any groups that teach super young boys? Like just starting at 5-6 years old. Did you guys start in bjj, or something else?
I started wrestling my sophmore year and had my first match after just 4 days of practice lol. It was a GMAC and I lost because of my Jiu Jitsu background as I was dominating the guy, but I just couldn't get rid of my jiu jitsu habits like clasping my hands or being on my back.I honestly gave the guy the match lmao. What sucks is that he beat me on the points I gave him.
Kevin Perez oh boy I know this is like 8 months old but I’m tryna be a softmore wrestler with a bjj backround. But thing is I kinda suck at bjj, I’m a girl and I have no idea what I’m doing lol. So I don’t know if having a bjj background would help me
Thanks guys! Our 7yr old son just started wrestling last month, and with the help of your video, he won his first match via pin! His opponent was even 12lbs heavier since they didn't have a big turn-out, due to the rona. 🙏💪💙
This is the best sport ever in my recent opinion. Im 36 and just now starting to learn about it more in depth. I wish i would have had it available growing up or even now. Great video. Answered alot of questions.🖒
I’m in senior year of hs just starting and I’m scared that I’m gonna be super behind that I will lose or not get points this season. The coach was happy I joined because their isn’t alot of girls wrestling, I haven’t started yet but i think there is only 1 other girl
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I’m the only girl fixing to try out for the team and I really wanna make it. Your video helped me so much :) I’ll check back in in October to let you know how it all goes
If you want to improve your wrestling, check out my complete curriculum in the description. It is an organized approach to mastering the art of wrestling. Good luck!
We have a senior on our HS team who is a first year wrestler. He's incredible. Athletic, physically talented, strong and fast. He wrestles 220lb. My son is a senior who started in 8th grade. Strength and quick reaction will get you out of most situations until you learn technique. Watch other wrestlers at tournaments, ask questions, practice, practice, practice. This is a sport that rewards discipline, work ethic and commitment.
I know it's late but me too I started today it's fun,but my MMA fighter instincts are telling me to triangle choke or armbar em that my challenge to get over my instinct to go in for the kill by arm break
I’m a teenage female in junior high and I’m about to try out for the wrestling team.. I’m tall , strong , and a fast thinker. I really hope a make it :)
I wrestled in Middle school and high school, from 2007-2012. It took me until my 3rd year, in 2010, to win my first match.. I was never good at wrestling but I absolutely loved the workouts. I WISH I had videos like this back then haha. Thanks for the refresher of good memories!
This is my first year wrestling and I’m in 8th grade 123lbs all of the boys are stronger than me and I’m not good at the actual wrestling part we’ve only been doing it for 2 weeks now and I’m worried I won’t ever win
Just started as well, in time you’ll provale, I’m in seventh and started a month ago, my first match is tomorrow, have hope I’m sure you’ll be a great wrestler if you already aren’t 👍
@@laurenp_2 nah bro, last year was my freshmen year of hs, first year ever wrestling, no experience with grappling and lost all my matches, even to a girl. This year i started off 3-0, just gotta get your mind right and not give up
I'm starting highschool wrestling as a freshman this winter season. I was wondering if there were any good workouts that could prepare me for it? Thanks anyway!
Me too! I mean the only thing I've done so far is weight lifting and boxing (since I love that sport) but idk what else to do. And when I ask people, some just don't take me seriously since I'm a female. /
Extremely helpful video as a parent whose 2nd grader is just starting competing in MYWAY, so that I can understand the scoring. Thank you so much for posting this! Truly appreciated.
I'm a junior, first day in wrestling and I must say it is work. I'm gonna stay committed and keep it pushing. This is my first sport and I'm not athletic at all. All I can do is give it my best.
My son, who is a freshman in his first year of wrestling, dominates wrestlers his age and weight. This is due to his 4 + years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training. That isn't a lot of training, but it does give him the advantage over his fellow beginning wrestlers. The drawback is the coaches now have him being put up against older JV and Varsity wrestlers who have far more wrestling experience which results in him losing most of his matches. I am not sure if this particular spot he is in is good or bad for a new wrestler. Losing most of the matches can sometimes be discouraging and cause kids to drop out and try something else.
tcfunvids wrestling is a much better foundation for jujitsu than the other way around. I highly suggest wrestling first, then grappling. You can be lazy and still be a good grappler, which can cause problems later on.
Well, it's too late to start wrestling first since he's already been in MMA for 4-5 years now. Jiu Jitsu is only part of his training. I'm looking for a good wrestling clinic that he can also attend until next season.
Thank you! I’m trying out for wrestling, which I have no experience in or anyone around me interested in it. I don’t know much about it but the sport always has me entranced. This helps so much!!
Hay I’m going out to the sign up is tomorrow actually im worried I’m going to get hurt by a bunch of 8th grade boys lol (I’m a girl) but I’m watching videos to try not to suck as bad lol it’s my first year also good luck to you though I hope you do good
As a parent who’s competed in other sports but never wrestling I thank you so much for this video, because I didn’t know what to tell my son to explain the rules and objective of the game.
Anayely Sabater same here i was going to start this year but I was late so next year it is. But there’s only 3 girls this year I hope there’s more next year
Laura Chebet this is late and im starting wrestling the weigh in is sunday but over here at my highschool there is A LOT of girl wrestlers and if youre a girl you were automatically put on varsity wrestling
Wrestling is not an everyday thing here in Canada. If it was I wouldnt have had to have watched this video. Nice video. I see a lot of youtube videos where people cant get their point across. Jason does it while wrestling at the same time. Thanks for the vid. Subscribed.
Great video! I come from a jiu jitsu background and just put my kids into wresting so that explained everything I was wondering super well and concisely. Thanks!
Just found this vid. I have been trying to understand for a long time, FINALLY, your excellent demo now makes sense to what I see in wrestling games. Many thanks to you two guys. Regards from South Africa
The senior managers asked me if I wanted to be manager for the wrestling team (I’m a freshman so I felt a little special). I didn’t hesitate and I said yes but I kind of got to know the rules for wrestling. Thank you so much for this video🤣
Im starting wrestling as a female sophmore and just now getting prepaired for the season. Rn its preseason and my coaches arent teaching me it. So i came across this and it made everything clear on what they are saying thank you so much 😁
Thank you, I am learning because my 12 year old son is wrestling and I am beginning to love this sport. My son has improved so much in such a short time. I am talking about confidence, getting out of his comfort zone and making friends. I want to learn my self to help him practice at home ❤️
As a hardcore mma fan. I always end up watching matches of up and comers and great wrestlers from the past but never have any clue to wtf is happening or who and winning and why. So thank you
Thank you I am getting ready to start some training the upcoming year. We didn't have wrestling at our high school, I just did a lot of street wrestling but there is nothing like learning the basics. Thanks for the video.
I never wrestled and am thinking about joining a university club team. What do you guys think about this, will I get destroyed or end up doing pretty well with a lot of hard work? I'm 20 years old and consider myself pretty athletic. I'm fast and explosive. I played soccer in high school and was always one of if not the fastest on the team. Also how do you pick your weight class. Thanks!
Although you said this a year ago I just wanted to tell you if you dicided not to do it you should reconsider because wrestling forces you to be fit and it makes you a better person I've been wrestling since I was 4 I am 13 now I've wanted to quite but my parents didnt let me now i am thankful of that because it really makes me a way better person
This was great thanks! My 5 year old started to wrestle last year and now with covid..... It will be at home lessons. I need as much help as I can get.
Appreciate that, taking my 5 year old to tryout wrestling soon. Wish I had focused on wrestling more growing up. I did get lucky when I was 15 and got to do a 3 month summer camp with some high level guys due to my grandfather knowing one of the coaches real well and there being a open spot due to injury. That was a summer of pain 😆 but little tricks I learned there has brought a lifetime of enjoyment and something I was able to build on with my friends. Keep those young ones safe and train hard. SKAL 🤘
Starting as a Junior in High school! I already play softball, this is my way of getting stronger while doing something fun. Looking forward to my first match!
I’m a freshman in HS. I thought this way to and said heck it and gave it a try! I’m really little too, weighing in at 106. I absolutely love it, my first meet is the 20th!
@@nataliewendt4745 Girl I'm a sophomore in HS and I just joined, my first meet is on the 20th too. I'm scared as helll, anyways let me know how it goes.
Freshman question Could I like do WWE moves Like a DDT for example against my opponent or would that be not allowed? (Serious question my ddts were dirty in middleschool)
Wow, this really did help. New parent here with 5yr old watching with knowledge of what I thought I knew. Although just the “rules” this not sport everyone familiar with the details so very good info. Especially for most parents hollering and not actually knowing the “whys.” Good info, thank you
I literally thought it was stand up round 1, then top/bottom (switch off) round 2 and 3. which was prob just my 30 yr ago PE class. Kept wondering why did in middle of round and was because out of bounds and just restart. And the clasping of when. Very good info to teach point strategy. Look fwd to learning more.
Going to try out wrestling now since a lot of my friends want me to try it out because my friends say I have a good build and grip for it. This is going to be my junior year in high school and this video helps a lot. Thanks for making it.
My school has never had a wrestling team but they are getting one next year and I have been hoping they would. I am going to start next year and this video will definitely help me understand the rules better and what to do vs. what not to do.
You should know that the rules explained in this video are for folkstyle wrestling, the style popular in the United States. Most wrestling on television is either freestyle or Greco Roman, which has a different rule set.
