Thank you for uploading. I have never seen this one. I love these programs from the 1980-2000 period, especially during these crazy times when they take me back to a nicer time
Never thot l’d be nostalgic for those years…a lot of joy, a lot of loss. The villains we deplored then feel tame by comparison today. But Man’s eruptions of barbarity/catastrophic global events must’ve caught our forebears by surprise in similar ways. So l guess & hope we’ll endure, as they did. Don’t mean to carp or criticize. It was, perhaps, an easier time- but l was 20+ years younger & stronger then 😄
@@jamesrouillardjas1671 It was an easier time, but "they" were setting us up for the insanity and awfulness of these years. I should say "pending" or "initiated" awfulness, as the "king Canutes" among us can still hold back the tidal wave /tsunami of global despotism.
It took a few rewinds in places to understand what was happening but when I got what was transpiring it was great. I like how each story connected and overlapped with each other. Some of the plot needed filling in, as when the young lad was checking on Mullins file it was not clear if he discovered Mullins past history. This would have explained the reason why he went to the movies with Mullins and went to the safe house. The characters second chances and how they were used was compelling. Wonder if Creevy's wife knew about Mullins proclivities? Glad Creevy moved on or was it to keep an eye on any developments in the case? I enjoy stories that are multi-levelled and that include the emotional/psychological states of the characters. Very good episode.
Really well done! Had some difficulty following the story in the beginning but all became clear. Great ending. Have enjoyed watching these stories. Wish there were more.
Very interesting in one way, but, because I know nothing of British public school culture, rather opaque. I prefer the Wexford genre. Thank you for uploading. I liked the acting and was satisfied that Peter Mullin was eliminated.
When I saw the flowers then I guessed the ending which was almost at the end. Someone said it was a strange ending but I thought it was quite apropos. The little boys ascension to the leader of the pack was interesting. I'm not sure if it is a good omen or bad omen. WHAT did pass through my mind was Davos and all those other clubs that the people who control the world belong to and I should imagine when he grew up he would be a member. Makes you wonder🤔
@@patricias5122It's the late lamented Baroness Rendell actually :) But I do agree. Also wish more of the non-Wexford Rendells were filmed. Many of those are incredibly good imo.
I agree. Initially l found the Wexford family intricacies confusing - and there’s one Wexford à la LSD trip episode (forget which) was for the birds. But l’m too committed to Rendell not to go back to the well again & again. Reading the books, too!
I like Wexford. The more wholesome ones. I sort of thought it was one. I kept waiting for Reg and Mike to come on into the scene! Little boys, and girls need to be careful and be more aware of who they are getting to know.
Hi Kimberly, Unfortunately I have now uploaded all the Wexfords I can. I have created a playlist called Chronological Wexfords. This has everything ever made in it. There are 3 stories at the end that are by other RU-vidr's that I didn't upload due to them being available on paid streaming sevices and DVD. I already had one copyright strike and didn't want another. There are 2 more Ruth Rendell adaptations to come. Sadly Reg and Mike aren't in them but I hope you enjoy anyway. The voting for my Wexford film location documentary will be decided 28th February. If you haven't had your vote and want to it's on the community tab on my RU-vid page. 😊
Be on the same footing spiritually. Does he love children. Does he know how to be serious. Does he know how to laugh and have fun. Does he treat your parents with love and respect. Does he love animals. Does he put your needs above his own. Does he treat his own parents with love and respect. Does he do little things for you in the spur of the moment….just because. Does he know how to save money, yet be giving at the same time. Does he show his inner feelings to you. Does he trust you. Do you have the same goals in life. Do you ever see him flirting with other women. Does he stand solidly beside you when you have a problem. Does he take care of his health. Does he encourage you. Does he speak respectful of you when out in public. Does he ridicule you. Is he a Man and not a wus. Can he make solid decisions and yet consider your feelings and beliefs while doing so. Did his Mama teach him HOW to love. Is he a Mama’s Boy . Does he compliment your cooking. Does he compliment the way you look or what you wear. Does he take the time and effort in bed to arouse you before meeting his own sexual needs. Are you his BFF.
@@angiewoodward4166 Not that hard, Angie. It is all in your priorities. Over my 79 years I have been married and widowed twice. Both men were “ right on “ in the husband department. Angie, we learn what our parents taught us……the values they instill in us. So, by the time we are of dating age, the type of people you hang around with, and date, and later marry………it is just all natural. But, it all began with your own parents. THAT’s the key…….or lesson.❤️
@@paulgoddard Indeed. The older episodes from the 1987-1992 seasons were released on VHS but have yet to be released on DVD or Bluray due to a dispute over Television South's (TVS) licensing rights which affects most of their back catalogue of programming and there are also a trio of episodes from the 1993-2000 seasons (the Meridian Broadcasting era) that have not been released because the licensing rights to those episodes are currently unavailable. Hope that changes sometime in the future, eh?
@@guypalmer7961 Does that include The Strawberry Tree? I can't seem to find that one anywhere. I'm a big fan of actress Cordelia Bugeja and she appears in that programme.
John Creevey has recently separated from his wife Jennifer and is still obsessed with her and Peter Mullin, the new man in her life. Many years ago his sister Cherry had been murdered and her fiancé, Mark Simms, now John's best friend, had been the prime suspect. When the police reopen the case and Simms is again under suspicion, John begins to doubt his friend's innocence, until Mark tells him of sordid details about Cherry's promiscuous past - and her relationship with Peter Mullin. - IMDB
Thanks for your explanation. I'm an hour into it and can't make head nor tail of it - what the boys are up to and how come John got into the coded notes in the wall... etc... oh boo🙄. I've now seen the whole thing and some things have become clear. but, still don't know why and how John became a player in the boys game. can't say I enjoyed or was entertained by this one.
Amazingly good. Dragon looks like he will become Prime Minister one day. What an excellently woven story. Really interesting characters brought to life by great actors. A real gem.
This episode’s plot is very hard if not impossible to follow. It’s as if it was written by two people taking turns in the writing and the pieces just don’t fit together at all.
Maybe this is partly due to the dramatization, the way the TV script was written? Often they try to encapsulate too much in too little dialogue or narration. It's a typical Rendell device to begin a story with 3 or more seemingly unrelated characters or sets of characters--part of the interest is trying to figure out how they could be connected.
FYI, this is episode 12 of season 6. This was only Keeley Hawes' 3rd IMDb appearance- she looks so young. And also, I think the librarian was much cuter than the woman police officer.
Just watched a second time. I liked the statement at the end. There are of course no moral imperatives for anyone but Kant. And that which is legal isn't always moral. Peter's death was an accident--karma, as it were. Satisfies my moral sense within the realm of fiction. Creevy's escape from punishment for the fire is merely poetic justice AFAIC.
Maybe rewatch it. The wife wants to marry a paedophile Her ex killed the missing boy. He tried to rape the boy thank goodness the boy is a tough cookie.
I’m in my 70’s now and back in my much younger days, we women thought men didn’t really suffer when a relationship ended. That was a women’s fate. Maybe we were wrong...
It's not that they don't suffer, it's that a lot of them probably never loved their gfs in the first place. You have to actually love someone to feel loss when they're gone. None of my bfs loved me, that's how i know.
Great drama. Started off sappy & I almost turned it off, but as it continued, I appreciated distinguishing the main plot from all the subplots. Lots of movement throughout. Ruth could have ended with several of the storylines. IMHO, the ending she chose was best. Decent acting.
Doctors making home visits . I haven't seen that in donkey's years . Im a yank, last time i saw a doctor make a visit was in the middle of a cold blizzard winter night . my little sis had bronchitis . he was a good man that doctor . Well i hear your wonderful NHS is getting screwed by privatization. soon you'll be like US, survival of the richest . Im so close to Canada yet someone from a British Commonwealth country thousands of miles away can become a canadian a lot easier than me and i need a good NHS due to my disability , sigh
I’m guessing you are from the USA. Commonwealths countries have to go through a process before becoming a citizen. If you want to move to Canada from the USA it’s fairly simple.
Did anyone get the name of the main boy actor - the one made leader in the last scene? He seemed an amazing actor and I wonder if he was in anything else as time went on.
I've seen Brit humor and Brit drama. Flat out....they frighten me. For starts, it's their reserved lack of emotion. I will say though that usually their acting is superb.
It was first broadcast 27th December 1992. This was the first adaptation under new production. Hopefully you will hear from me later today or tomorrow. I have been completely booked with clients which has been good. 🙂
Altho this & other comments were posted a while ago, I have become increasingly annoyed by the disparaging remarks from those who clearly do not understand the plot. From the start of the movie there are little hints woven into the dialogue that explain the plot & thankfully today we also have Google. I hope reading their explanation of the plot leads to a better appreciation of this wonderfully clever & imaginative tale. For me, Ruth Rendell's crime writing remains unparalleled & I lament her passing.
Isn’t this show about that man murders strangers led by a teenager? Anyway, the female police officer has a very strange laugh! And his wife is so stupid leaving him for an ugly irresponsible man, who once deserted her in the past🤦🏻♀️
