In this episode, Dr. David Sinclair and co-host Matthew LaPlante discuss why we age. In doing so, they discuss organisms that have extreme longevity, the genes that control aging (mTOR, AMPK, Sirtuins), the role of sirtuin proteins as epigenetic regulators of aging, the process of "ex-differentiation" in which cells begin to lose their identity, and how all of this makes up the "Information Theory of Aging", and the difference between "biological age" and "chronological age" and how we can measure biological age through DNA methylation clocks.

I started taking responsibility for my health in my early 20s. I stopped drinking - have not had one single drink since 1987, no cigarettes since 1993, I've had excellent nutrition and exercise. I have seen the amazing results for years, but now that I'm heading towards age 65, my efforts have paid off tremendously. I look and feel much better than 99% of my contemporaries. And now with all these new developments in knowledge, I benefit still. Something not mentioned by most practitioners too often is faith though. I'd be nowhere without my study of the Bible, years of pursuing that knowledge trumps everything.

What ideas come to mind when we say “skip a meal” to a 25-45 year old vs to a 7 yr old, 13 yr old, etc? How do you think about optimizing health in children that are developing in height, performance, etc? Thank you for all you guys do!

HOORAY! At last, Dr. Sinclair is unfettered by interviewers who feel they need to ask the same introductory questions and he is free to move on to the next level of explanation. Matthew is so well-informed and knows how to compliment David's points and how to ask interesting and useful follow-up questions. The lighting and sound are good, and the introduction to and the updating of the work is well thought out. THANK YOU! I shall be able to share these videos with a much broader spectrum of my friends and colleagues while learning more and more!

Thank you Dr. Sinclair for this insanely insightful work that you provide. It’s a pure pleasure to listen. It makes me smile to whiteness the similarities between your and Dr. Huberman’s podcast, knowing of course that he helped to ramp this up. It’s great to have such powerful people see collaborate. Matthew La Plante brings a nice twist to the topic. Highly enjoyable. Looking forward to the following 7 episodes.

Mind blowing ! I have been watching videos about aging process for over a year now and I love every one of your interventions - but this is just mind blowing, the first one in which the concret biological process is so clearly explained ! Great work

Learned a lot on this episode, i'm definitely watching all of it! I am facinated on how much science has developed so far about aging and so enthusiastically about researching it.

Thank you thank you David Sinclair and co host for speaking so clear for us that are not on the scientific world. I was a mother at 44 years so my interest in keeping alive with my best quality possible as long as i can is a huge wish so i can share with my child many things in his adulthood. Hope as what you say, devices and everything else will be more accesible for us in the future, but we can start with what´s in our hands and that i have been reading/listening over the last years and it´s what you talked about on your episode 2 which i loved too. I´m excited for the next episodes!!!!!

'I've listened to all episodes and I LOVED all of them. Dr. Sinclair has a lovely voice for podcasting and it's fun to have the two hosts bounce ideas off each other an guide the conversation. Listening to the episodes have been a major inspiration for my personal and professional life and further motivates me to study neuroscience. Please keep working on new series!!

I doubted about Laplante going to be of any value at the beginning, I was wrong I love that his questions was to doubt a statement and waiting to be answered by Sinclair, he asks questions we want to ask.

Such an educational podcast! Thank you so much for what you are doing 🙏 In your book you mentioned that in Hebrew there is a phrase "till 120" when people greet each other every birthday. We also say in Hebrew "Lechaym" which means "to life" every time we raise our wine and cheers. So, thank you for improving our quality and quantity of LIFE.
