I trapped a few years ago. Wasn’t real good but I caught 13 coins and 2 fixes. No coyotes. I can hear them here barking and howling at night but no luck. I don’t have much time now to trap. I enjoy doing it. Keep the videos coming, I enjoy watching them.

Hi Perry. In very open areas, make sure you use aggressive drags on at least 10’ of chain. Regular rebar grapple drags will work well in the woods.

The main trick with a drag is to have enough chain, long enough that he tangled up in and around small trees, or under growth... that's and old trappers trick, they would use small 1 1/2 single long spring traps and using a drag gave the trap jaws long enough to set itself into the animals meat and no getting out.....even with what today's trapper would consider a junk trap...

Had a fox on Kodiak that repeatedly dug into my cubby from every angle and stole bait. I finally put my trap right on top of the bait and filled the entire cubby with grass. The next trip I had a grey muzzled old red...a big ole guy...as angry as could be. And foxes there were large. Some the size of small coyotes. Hey Biggs! God bless!! I’ve been watching and following your videos for a while. It’s been years since I trapped but got back into it this year. Weather has been crappy but up u til now I’ve got a few bobcat, and a couple fox. The coyotes got pushed over the mountain in deer season but they’re making their way back over. Finally got a nice snow where I could look for tracks. Anyhow I’m using mb550’s on a cable stake. You get your beds so solid. How do you get yours so solid with a spring, chain, and crunch proof. Mine are center swiveled and with the chain there too I have a heck of a time getting a solid bed. I do my best but sometimes I wonder if I could get my traps bedded better. I dont have any dig ups or anything. But it just seems you bed way more solid. I’m also using peat moss. But that doesn’t seem to be the issue. Thanks in advance.
@biggstimetrapping9323
@biggstimetrapping9323 2 года назад
Hi Craig. I’m glad to hear that you’re back in the game! Couple tips on that trap bed. 1. Dig it bowl shaped. 2. Dig it smaller than you need 3. Use your hammer to pound a couple palaces for your levers. 4. Work the trap into the bed. It’s easier to make the hole a little larger if need be than it is to add a bunch of loose dirt back. Hope it helps. Tight chains!
@craigmcmullen231
@craigmcmullen231 2 года назад
@@biggstimetrapping9323 thanks for the tips. I’m gonna try the bowl shape and take a slug out of the middle similar to how you’re doing it. Next year I believe I’m going to switch to drags instead of earth anchors. Last night and today were heck for us up here in central Pa. We got about 3/8” of solid ice, then a little rain, now temps down into the single digits. I’m pretty sure I’ll be rebedding all my sets tomorrow. So I’ll give your tips a try. Thanks again.

I run the regular Sabertooth at 2.65 lbs. I think the JRs are 1.25 lbs. Bigger cats don’t seem to have an issue getting away from the set with the regular drags. However, at times, when we hook up with smaller cats, they generally don’t make it away from the set at all.

Yes, Jerry, hit the nail on the head. You basically use dead debris to make a sort of “nest” to mimic the idea that something is living there or something has buried something there. The item that was placed over the pan is called a trappers cap. It allows you to pack the peat moss around the jaws without it packing in under the pan.

I’m in Virginia where it’s ridge after ridge and you can’t drive most of the land. I’m not a pro trapper but I catch without half the gimmicks. Not much scent control done here either. I switched to double springs and don’t use salt anymore. Just don’t set that trap tight on the side’s and she’ll always close. I’m talking to commenters mostly, drags cost and require rubber tires.
