The SHOCKING State Of Uk Lawns!

My business is all about helping the typical average Uk household to get a nicer Greener lawn. Most years thats never an issue, but this year we've had one of the wettest Winter periods Ive ever known.
As a result I am seeing a HUGE amount of MOSS as well as many lawns that have thinned out to almost nothing in some cases.
Most of the following lawns are on very sandy fast-draining soil:
Timestamps:
Intro: 00:00
Lawn 1: 00:29 - Large lawn in full sunshine (disease problems)
Lawn 2: 03:12 - Large lawn in partial shade (healthy but mossy)
Lawn 3: 06:52 - Big lawns, one in massive tree canopy shade
Lawn 4: 09:55 - 2 typical lawns that don't get watered much
Lawn 5: 13:32 - Much used family lawn - a typical Uk lawn
Lawn 6: 16:20 - Another typical lawn on sandy soil (& FAIRY RING)
Lawn 7: 19:40 - Very sandy soil, struggles in the heat each year
Lawn 8: 21:06 - A gardeners own lawn (and a great guy)
Lawn 9: 22:14 - Heavily used family lawn, used for football
Lawn 10: 23:13 - Lovely front lawn (not walked on), but heavily used rear lawn
Lawn 11: 24:26 - Large landscaped gardens - some shade and moss from trees
Lawn 12: 28:36 - shaded rear lawn with dog wee burns, full sun front lawn
Lawn 13: 31:19 - Heavy clay soil (different area now) - disease and mossy
Lawn 14: 32:21 - PROOF that good TLC makes a BIG DIFFERENCE!
This video is to help you understand what most typical Uk lawns look like right now in early March 2024, after one of the wettest winters ever.
Moving forward, once we get warmer weather and more sunshine, things will start to improve, however a number of lawns are going to need to be reseeded, and perhaps have their soil issues looked at in terms of drainage.
On this day I visited 23 properties. I have filmed 14 of those properties to give you an idea of what most typical lawns look like.
Do you know, just a few small changes can transform an average lawn into a much improved lush Green lawn.
Regular mowing and not cutting too short can literally transform any lawn.

Shaun, thanks for bringing us along for the day. I am very happy to say this is the first year, in over 15 years, that my lawn is looking as good at the beginning of the season as it did at the end of the season last year. My lawn was the only lawn in the neighborhood that was uniformly green all winter. After following your methods, there's no moss or thatch, no thin spots, and I can see soil between the grass. I'll reseed again in April and am looking forward to a second year of following your advice for a great lawn.

This has really put everything into perspective in regards to my own lawn. I gave it a full renovation basically and has faired pretty well. It's a bit thin in places and in some areas bare patches due to where my dog has pee'd. Little to no moss but will require an overseed at some point. Can't wait to how ot fares this summer 😀

I can understand homeowners wanting to cut their lawn but uk councils have an obsession with neatness. Let the grass grow and use the money to pick up litter. Easy

Never stopped raining this year in the Lakes. Back garden is waterlogged and the grass really struggling because of poor drainage. Mind you, a Springer Spaniel with enormous paws hasn't helped! Managed to cut the front lawn a couple of times though and looking good. A lot of work needed on the back, if it fver stops raining!!!!

Amazing Shuan, thanks for sharing your normal working day with us, with great advices on top. If I was to do lawn reno for someone like 50sqm inc weed/moss killing, scarifiecation, aeration, overseeding top dressing, fleecing. 4 to 5 weeks job untill lawn is established so then customer can carry on with mowing. How much would you charge for the work inc all the materials. Thank you
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
Very hard to say without seeing the lawn.. You'd need to factor in what you need to make per day, if you've staff etc.. For me it's no more than half a days work with professional machines. I let the customer do all the watering so it's just the reno cost

Great following you around Shaun, it's really only in the past few years I've been able to spend more time on my lawn following retirement, and instead of just running the mower over it I'm now more into the science of the turf and grass. It's great having people like yourself and others to obtain the proper advice from that is such a great help to obtaining a lawn to be proud of. Hopefully we are on the turn now towards some warmer weather and I can get my 35 classic back to work instead of the rotary. Many thanks partner 👍

What’s the best grass seed to use for a clay soil and majority shaded area?…I used a perennial ryegrass (50%) and tall fescue (50%) mix and had so much die back over winter…very thick in the summer but only about 50% of the grass left over winter!

Hi, hope you’re well. I’ve been obsessed with your videos recently and had a question.. I have scarified (lawn was v mossy) and put some organic moss remover on afterwards as it was still very mossy. I would like to seed next but not sure how long to wait until I do, also should I scarify again (if it’s a 3 week wait).. please can you advise on what to do next and when?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 22 дня назад
Hi if its mo bacter you applied it is very very slow from what Ive read about it, like many months, so I wouldn't be hanging around for it. if your scarifying has created a lot of grooves in the soil and you can see the soil then feel free to seed now.. if not, scarify again, in a different direction then seed right away :)

@LawnRight
@LawnRight 18 дней назад
Yeah 6 cuts just isnt anywhere near enough to be fair. Unless you charged more to cover the extra time. For lush grass it needs cutting g weekly or more often but associations etc just need it cut so I dloool to see if you can either do more cuts or up the price to allow an extra hour each visit.. Or something along those lines

Hi, as its getting milder you should be fine to use the miracle gro one but check the application timing on it.. it might be that the product is more of a summer feed with some iron in it.. in which case avoid for now... Yes I simply use powdered stuff (most are the same).. the stuff I use is in big bags in bulk and I generally put around 800g to 1000g(1 litre roughly) in with 20 litres of water using a Green deflector tip nozzle.. and of course all the usual rules on spraying apply - as it stains any hard surfaces.,..@@bbr9707
