The Show With PJ Thum - Episode 2 - How Singapore’s Elections are Structurally Unfair

New Naratif Discusses

For some reason, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wants to call an election in the middle of the coronavirus crisis. Historian Thum Ping Tjin ("PJ") comments on this and explains how the electoral system is deeply unfair. It is designed to maximise the seats and votes for the governing People's Action Party (PAP), and the point of the system is to legitimise PAP rule, not to reflect popular will or ensure democracy.
Subtitles available: English, 简体中文 (simplified Chinese), Bahasa Melayu (Malay).
N.B.: This video was filmed 28 January 2020, and so predates the new electoral boundaries of the EBRC Report of 13 March 2020. The new Report, sadly, reinforces the arguments made in the video. The introductory segment was filmed 26 March 2020.
The list of countries which have postponed elections (and a shorter list of those which have not postponed) is at www.idea.int/news-media/multi....

With the introduction of POFMA, perhaps one "good" side-effect is that video content (even in parts) such as this can be deemed to be "true", since it's not been POFMA-ed after being online some time. Being on the fence with my vote, I appreciate contents like these to be laid out bravely for the uninformed to process and consider. And just before any camp's supporter (whichever side you're on) comment that I'm being misled or intoxicated, blah blah... do note and be assured I'm also reading up contents from other camps - the conclusion to be drawn will be personal to each of us. One common "take-away" from the PAP supporters I found is on the notion of a "lack of talent, proposals, experiences... from the opposition parties" - to that I'll suggest them to spend some time listening to the many interviews and speeches from BOTH parties so as to draw an informed conclusion - if only there are more campaigning time given for them to share their worthiness instead of the short 9 days given in all recent elections. Finally, I'll like to share this thought (not my original but one which I agree) - "The motivations of the talented have changed. Those from the founding generation stepped up to serve knowing without them, there will not be a Singapore. It's for the survival of the nation, the people and their families. Yes, they had other more lucrative options e.g. family businesses, but these will be nothing without a country. The talented from later generations take peace, stability and continuity for granted; it's a given - Singapore will go on with or without them serving. So, they would rather focus on the more lucrative professions and not enter into the public domain. Honestly, I don't blame the talented for not stepping up." For the "talented" out there running successful private companies and attributing it to the stability and goodness of what Singapore has been, ask yourself why then do you not step up to contribute to the betterment of Singapore in the politics now? And then what are the possible motivations of those few talents who are indeed stepping up now?

While political parties are not expected to invite or promote competition, governments and electoral systems are expected to do so. The issue arises when a party or politicians use their power within government to their benefit themselves and attack opposition. This is why parliaments all over the world are out of session during campaign season. This spirit is missing and is impacting the health of democracy in Singapore.

They are unable to produce results (WP) and the way they do not present themselves as a first-world government. 2) Although countries in SEA have more democratic election procedures and longer election duration, their country are still not doing as well as SG and many prominent social, political and economical issues are still unresolved. For those citizens demanding "change" and more "creativity" from pap govt, you should reflect on perhaps it is you haters who need to change your mindset. Stop automatically jump to conclusions that every policy from pap is malicious and hurtful to citizens. Also, not everyone who oppose pap and promise more "freedom" and "change" is automatically more moral, more honest, better at governing. Don't you understand that these are charlatans who want to make you dependent on their promises. And if you think that a "coalition" govt is great, ask yourself what is the vested interest of the Opposition if they get elected. Coalition means some Opposition will be in Cabinet positions. Won't they place their cronies in positions of power and call in favours from supporters? And won't they fire certain senior civil servants to build their empire? How can you expect full cooperation and harmony from each side which are opposed in interests and loyalties? Like LKY warned: coalition will bring at least 8 years of quarreling, chaos and policy stagnation. Your family can afford that? Singapore can afford that?
