What about the landing, though? He actually landed on his feet and stood right up.
@TVmuki

I totally agree. Besides the perfect take off and the insane height of his jump the landing is also truely special. His leg and hip angle is so perfect that his feet compress the sand in a way that enables him to stand up right away. I have always wondered if modern pits would even allow such a landing.

@sams.1597
@sams.1597 3 года назад
Yeah I think he Bob could have cleared 9 if he had a bit more of a pike landing position. But don’t take this as a critique at all. I think that this might be b/c he only does a 1.5 hitchkick while most jumpers today do a 2.5 hitch. Bob has to hold his landing position a bit longer and that might be why you see a bit of knee bend right before landing. I’m really impressed with Beamon’s penultimate stride and then his last step how long it is as he lowers his center of gravity gathering for the take off.

Although I can't argue with your conclusion based on your percentage improvement criterion, nevertheless I would vote for Dick Fosbury's high jump gold medal at the same 1968 Olympics. Not only did he win a gold medal and set a world record, but he also changed the sport forever, something that cannot be said of Bob Beamon.

On October 18th, 1968 when Bob Beamon broke the long jump world record, the 100m world record was 9.95 by Jim Hines at the time. If at that time someone had broken the 100m record with the same % improvement, he would’ve gotten about 9.29 seconds, and the world record would still hold today with no one coming close in 52 years

6:50 if a similar improvement in 100m sprint is "literally impossible", then perhaps this isn't the best metric for determining most dominant victory
@Mariocraft97
@Mariocraft97 3 года назад
I am not sure of this, but given the 100m record from 1968, which wikipedia tells me is 9.95, then a 6.5% improvement could have been possible, just unlikely. In the same way it might be humanly impossible to do the same again with the current long jump world record. 8.95->9.53. Track and field is now so optimized that no such leap in results is realistic, and probably impossible. Having said that, yes it is therefore unfair to compare the old to the new, and I have no idea how we would try to balance that out. I do belive that mesuring dominance in precent is slightly inaccurate, but Bob had without a doubt the most dominant performance in all track and field.
@seanregehr4921
@seanregehr4921 3 года назад
Here is how you sort out greatest improvement as best as possible anyways. First determine the scientific limits of a particular event. Then determine what percentage of completion towards fulfilling that limit a win or record is. What this does then is not just judge an event based on it being a record but how far the record push the limits of human ability. The key factor then is the scientific limit determinations but there are some math geeks out there ready and willing to tackle that challenge.

My guess is Bob Beamon in 1968 long jumping 8.90 m, breaking the world record by 55 cm, or 6.58% improvement. His record stood until 1991, when Mike Powell was credited with breaking it (IMO I think the judges mis-marked Powell's landing spot, so I still consider Beamon's record to be the real one). It was a feat that defied logic as well as imagination. It took many, many minutes to verify the time because no one, not even the judges, could believe that jump had happened. SOMETHING with the measurement or the jump itself had to be wrong, and they checked and re-checked and re-checked... but nothing was. It was correct. It was unbelievable. It was beautiful.

There are certain events where a small change in technique yields a large change in outcome. In these events, we expect a greater variance in outcomes and a greater difference between the best and second best performances. In events where an object is thrown, the key factor is angle of ascent, which has a significant impact on outcome.

When I was in junior high school, I broad jumped about 15 1/2 feet. But one day, I jumped 17 feet. I never exceeded 16 feet after that. It was clear to me even then (1958) that there was something very subtle about the timing of the jump that seems to defy repeatability .. I think it has something to do with the exact timing of stiffening and springing the leg in take off - not exactly a natural action.

Interesting video - however, very strange that you didn't mention that this jump was performed at the very high altitude of Mexico city: at more than 7000 feet, or at close to 2500 meters, which is an enormous advantage. Beamon's jump was probably worth around 8,40 at sea level, which would have been 5 cm farther than Ralph Boston's world record at the time (shared with the Sovjet Union's Igor Ter-Ovanesian).

Carl Lewis did jump further than Bob Beamon's 8.90 meters. When Mike Powell set his world record of 8.95 meters in Tokyo in 1991, Lewis jumped 8.91 meters just before Powell set his record. But the wind was slightly over the legal limit while it was within the limit for Powell's jump. Not to take anything away from Beamon, Mexico City's altitude of 7,380 feet contributed to his performance while both Powell and Lewis jumped at essentially sea level.

@mombojom3 as i understand it there was a storm in the air and it began raining heavily not long afterwards. The conditions were on the edge of legal for Beamons record jump and were not so favourable for the others. There is a research paper that indicates the conditions assisted Beamon by approximately 31cm. All that said Beamon was obviously the clear best in the competition and blew the field away regardless. It's evident that his jump was still near on flawless and incredible by any measure. That said if we're to consider this to be the best individual moment in athletics we need to consider it in as critical a way as we can.

True, but all jumpers had the same conditions and no one else came close to Beamon. He destroyed everyone's hope or Gold on the 1st jump because they couldn't conceive o jumping that far. That's what made it so incredible in the 1st place!

The problem with that argument is that the other jumpers in the same competition in the same environment did not even come close. Why didn’t they jump 29 feet or better?

@@mombojom3 But did they not jump better than usual? Pretty sure they did, they just couldn't match Beamon. Lots of sprinting records were broken. See 1968 200 meter.

Obviously not a track and field record, but Eddie Hall improved the world record deadlift from 465kg to 500kg, making it a 7.53% improvement on the previous record. Kind of ridiculous when put in this context with these records! Hafthor Bjornsson has since lifted 501kg, but Eddies performance really fits the bill of 'Beamonesque'!

No mention of the high elevation of Mexico City and the thin air! Certainly this was a historic record but the very thin air should be mentioned. 100 m sprint times are improved at elevations like Mexico City but I believe not by as much. The throws - especially the javelin throw - are also improved; however, Jan Zelezny's 1996 world record was at Jena in Germany - which is at a low altitude, at only 143 m.

China, Austrilian, USA swim team all breaking World Record in the final is insane. You will never see that again or the 14 yrs old Chinese girl perfection dive for all her dives.

The percentage is nice, but I'd still like to hear what the previous records were by the units they're measured in. Some of us understand the events enough that hearing the actual measurement difference is more noticeable/impressive than giving us the percentage improvement, which is a stat that's new in describing track n field.

I agree. Beamon broke the previous world record by 55 centimeters. So the previous record was 8.35 meters or 27 ft 4 & 3/4 inches. Beamon jumped 8.90 meters or 29 feet 2 & 1/2 inches. So he completely skipped over 28 feet.
