Here's the thing that I am struggling with Mike: for $350,000 I can probably find a pretty nice Cirrus SR22 which is a bigger, heavier plane. Downside is that it will be used and is a fuel hog. But the upside is that I don't have to build one or wait. Thanks for being so transparent with the cost breakdown. I've been following your journey for years. Ed

Hi Mike, really helpful and thoughtful video, thank you so much! I was wondering, for IFR, what specific avionics did you end up using? Have you by chance published that list anywhere? ie., the full list/specifics of what you've put in your magnificent TSi. I figure what you've put in will be a current benchmark if someone is looking for an IFR-capable Sling. The Sling team look like a really wonderful group of people and I'm thinking in the years to come they will be a major international force in GA. Great video MIke, love this channel! Question: I'll be going through this decision soon, and I have a question regarding the back seat, which is something I've been thinking about. Is it not possible to remove the back seat in a Sling Tsi (low wing) if you need extra cargo space? If removing and installing on a regular bases is not easy, what about just not installing it when you build it if you don't think you'd need it and would rather have more cargo space?

@vasicp
@vasicp 2 года назад
A few other things; in a low-wing, when you're taxiing in that bubble canopy, it becomes very hot very quickly under the summer sun. High-wing offers a bit of a shade, and you can safely open doors while moving on the ground. One more bit; when you land somewhere in the rain, you can open your doors, step out of the aircraft and open your umbrella while standing under your wings. The wing also offers a nice shade when you're sitting under it in a folding chair, parked near the flight line in Oshkosh.

Rent, don't buy. Or buy the old plane and finance it for 10y to lower the payment. Get one that is way nice and maintained, it will be more expensive than you would normally consider but it will probably save you $10s of thou$ands of dollars in annuals and repairs. It's possible to put $50,000 into an old $20,000 airplane and have it still be un-airworthy. But if you buy a $80,000 plane in the first place, it might fair a lot better. The payments are actually pretty low. Once it's paid off it will be worth the same or more than you paid, and that's a huge chunk toward a new plane.

Well, at least that's an HONEST price assessment. When I ran your TSi numbers, I came up with $275,000 not including your flights back and forth from GA to CA. But, you did 'load it up' with all of the options, didn't skimp on the interior layout, nor avionics. I can understand why the carbon fibre, glass work, etc. is more expensive, and, I sincerely believe that the aircraft is exceptionally well designed for appropriate loading, safe flight envelope with neutral handling characteristics while remaining 'sporty'. The Rotax 915is is the basis for the capabilities of this aircraft- another well engineered product being maximized by the airframe. I'd seriously consider it if I had that large of a budget and I would consider builder assist as a MUST instead of a want. Otherwise, it would end up as $165,000 thrown out the window... I just have the ability to turn parts into an airplane without direction & assistance!

I’m not sure why you only look at indicated airspeed (which changes with air density) and ground speed (which changes with wind component). Neither of those reflect the actual performance of the airplane - kinda like measuring height when everyone is wearing different shoes…

Oh mikey how you have grown! This is a marketing piece for your company, not a review of the HW. Nothing wrong with that - but you are now targeting a different audience than just a couple years ago. Most folks think about a kit build so they can afford to get into aviation. $350k is likely outside their budget for a home let alone a "hobby". There is a point way before this number where a nice, proven Cessna 182 with steam gauge six pack is viable even with the additional A&P maintenance costs. There is also joy in building your own airplane, even if it takes 5 years or more. Anyway, the HW is really nice and will be the most successful Sling in the stable. Best to you!

Both the TSi and the HW are 880 nm according to the Sling website, not 1000 nm. Published TAS for the TSi is 148 KTAS not 155. You mention ground speeds.. thats TAS influenced by wind. The Rotax does not kick down power output, the pilot needs to reduce max rpm to max continuous.

@@EricSimoneau In aviation we deal with nautical miles.
