Tony: “He’s got a kid in the hospital, a little sympathy eh?” “Nobody’s killing anybody” Also tony: brutally murders Ralph within 24 hours of this conversation
Pauly forgot one rule. You can't threaten to whack the guy who just handed the boss an envelope full of cash. Much like going swimming after eating, you have to wait at least one hour.
I always found it interesting how happy Paulie was that the boss was gonna visit his mom. Like he was totally devoted to the mob. It was his whole life.
jbot91 Tony would have known Paulie’s mum his whole life. Tony has respect towards the animals and the elderly. Marianucci (Paulie’s mum) was such a gentle, caring person. Tony likely thinks very highly of her. I’d say she was delighted when Tony visited.
That's some masterful leadership by Tony right here. He deflates Paulie's malicious temper with a sacrosanct reminder that he's out of line but at the same time shows an equal amount of empathy for his mother's condition by offering his time to visit her. Later in the series Tony just stopped caring.
Its all about to keeping his cash flow going into his pockets. That is all Tony ever cares about at the end of the day. Just keep those envelopes coming.
I love this scene. How Tony handles Pauly with authority, then softens it with the hug and a promise to visit his mother. Also, how the other gangsters see Pauly. As the weirdest guy in their group. No family, little emotions, self centered to the core.
the whole sopramos shows having children has nothing to do with being self centered and/or narcissist they are all bad people despite window dressing around them
His whole acting career was meant to get him ready to play this role. The rest of his career was mostly just bit roles but he was born to play Paulie Walnuts.
@@joemckim1183 agreed. I think I heard David Chase say that he wrote the character for him, but I could be mistaken. No one could have done a better job.
"Whatever happened there? WHATEVER HAPPENED THERE?! I'll tell you what fuckin' happened: that piece of shit Ralphie decided to fuckin' terrorise my mother without any provocation whatsoever!" "His kid is in the ICU" "Fuck you!"
Yeah, and he says "...she was in the hospital with nervous bowel syndrome..." LOL! Like how the fuck is her bowels supposed to have anxiety, LOL!!! Jk.
@@siler7 I think the OP was referring to having Ralphie killed. Even mobsters don't tend to kill people without conclusive proof, because they know it might be them next.
@@1badjesus I mean, c'mon, he didn't set out to strangle her. He just wanted the money. He only strangled her because she caught him. It's not like he was Raskolnikov or something.
TONY: "You lay a hand on him, you're gonna answer to me. If you can quote the rules, you can fucking obey them. This is a business" ALSO TONY: *Kills the guy he talks about over a horse*
+I Bramblebush that's cause he and ralphie were actually getting along around this time. After the Jackie jr shit happen Ralphie was less of a dick and Tony liked him a bit more too. but Tony loved that horse and it pissed him off so it made him hate him once again...
+I Bramblebush Exactly. And it was never proven that Ralph killed the horse. Tony just suspected it and then just killed Ralph on the spot. And Ralph was his best earner. What a bad decision from a business standpoint, even if Ralph was a total prick.
Paulie brightened up a lot when Tony offered to go visit. So many times he could've made small gestures to show his guys appreciation like this one moment, but he often uses anger. Tony was a terrible mob boss, and if you think otherwise you weren't watching the show closely 🤣
Tony is a very real personality if a made man. Being untouchable and unstable at the sametime is how these men are made. I knew many mobsters and two big level, an under boss and a captain. They are not nice people, I had great relationships with them, but I wasn't in their club so to speak. The men under them were treated as such, I wouldn't have wanted their words if I was under them , weakness wasn't tolerated at all. Bad times, a death in the family, a card, some money and that's that. I was gifted to have known the men I did, and I would even call them friends if a sort, I was young and happened to land where they were, theybwere kind to me and respected how I carried myself fir my age the location we were in, I was tough and they liked that so taught me things , helped me grow into a good man, one taught me the lesson I live by, gangsters are not real men, real men come home at night , real men can speak about what they do openly and without shame, and if I wanted to be the most badass dude, I'd stay out if trouble and raise my kids and be home with my wife, and not put myself in a position to be away for years while they suffered with me and I had to smoke weed that came from someone's ass the day before. I was able to learn a great deal from those men. Not being part of it made it better, our relationship was genuine and had nothing to do with business and I still had the comfort if being close enough to be almost untouchable without having to deal with the drama, because everyone under them is a tool , and tools are disposed when they dint work anymore. Stand in your own two feet, no gang , no family, no garbage , naked your own choices reap the rewards of your own work
It's a lot more complicated than 'he was a terrible mob boss', I would argue the point is less that and more showing us how the mob itself was a decaying institution filled with incompetence and rats, and how eventually these guys would all destroy each other, it's all a reflection on late-stage capitalism and its rotten nature where money is king above all else, so yeah Tony's competency as a mob boss isnt really the point, we see him make both good and bad decisions, just like all the other mob bosses on the show (even Carmine Sr who didnt declare a successor due to hubris)
Tony always looks like he is waiting for someone to defy his orders, and then he is surprised when People do as he tells, James Gandolfini was truely brilliant actor.
And it won't be long until Paulie discovers, from his actual dying mother, that his "ma" who raised and loved him is his aunt. Talk about getting the shaft?
The writing and acting in this show is such high quality. You feel real empathy for these murdering gangsters, and then within the blink of an eye you are reminded what they are really like.
"He's got no kids, can't expect him to understand".. yeah... like Ralphie is father of the year. Not to mention he murdered his girlfriend and his unborn baby.
Paulie: “On my old mans grave. I get proof it was him, he’s a fuckin’ corpse!” Tony: “Nobody is killing anybody.” *It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia intro music* Title Card: “Tony Kills Ralphie”
Exactly. Thats what I didn't like about Tony. When others had a problem with someone is a no no but when he got mad with anyone all rules broken and he lost it. Not that Ralphie didn't deserved it as he was an asshole.
"it was revenge for Tone finding out that Ralphie was Janice's little who-er... and alot of other things. and there was nothing they could do about it. they had to sit still and take it. it was among the etalians, it was real grease ball shit."
This my favorite scene depicting Tony’s actual abilities to lead by example. He reprimands paulie for sure but also fully comprehends why paulie doesn’t understand Ralph’s pain knowing his son could easily die. So instead of perpetuating what Silvio said (which was also true) Tony tries to give Paulie the benefit of the doubt in just outright not understanding what it’s like.
Solid management skills shown here... Reprimand him harshly to make the point, show other co-workers that such insubordination won't be tolerated, but make peace and show 'genuine' concern for the well-being of the employee that overstepped.
I have been searching for this comment for weeks , i thought i am the only one that noticed that at the end of the scene. i hoped that the director should have focused on chris face much closer to let us see the sadness an d to show that these words hurt chrissy so much
You could see Tony holding back a smile when Paulie mentioned the prank phone call. Ralphie wasn't the only laughing about the gerbil in the "rectal passage' prank, it probably made the rounds. Paulie was despised by most of the guys. He was a greedy psycho who would kill your family for a dollar. His humiliation would have pleased everyone, including Tony, who knew Paulie had double crossed him with Johnny on the HUD thing.
Yea an hour and a half in the hospital ward with nervous bowl syndrome funny as shit if you ask me,I don't think you get over that in just a hour and a half
"Empathy", yea'.. i know what they mean when they say this show isn't for everybody, if you think empathy had anything to do with him defending Ralph, then you need to go back to your sit-coms and superhero movies.
Tony wouldn’t piss on Ralph to put him out if he was on fire…he had no sympathy to Ralph’s situation BUT he had his back because he was his best earner. He was a true businessman. It was only his love of animals that made him kill Ralph; IRONICALLY something that made Tony a ton of money too
Love how Tony turns to Chris and Silv and says “that goes for all of you” right after reprimanding Paulie in front of them so he wouldn’t be embarrassed and his ego wouldn’t get hurt
Tony: He's got no kids, you can't expect him to understand. *Also Tony* *Kills Ralph over a horse while his son is recovering from major brain trauma and needs him most.*
@@mgottpt Because i think it's okay to be upset about a pet dying and understandable to want revenge if you think someone killed that Pet? Yes how monstrous of me.
Paulie really loves Tony. The actor does a great job of conveying that. The way he looks at Tony. Like it's his father telling him good job or something. Even though Tony is younger.
One of my favorite scenes from Tony. All in one scene, he asserts his dominance over Paulie, pretty much squashes his beef with Ralph, and then builds back Paulie’s morale by offering to see his mom. And not to mention showed to Sil and Chris he wouldn’t put up with any nonsense. Total boss move by T
Tony grabbing Chrissy after the jackie junior card game robbery n murders to stop him from killing jackie is one the best scenes emotional n threatening the acting on this show A+
Interesting that Paulie's gotta be at least 20 years older than tony but still looks up to him. With the painting of tony at his house and even in this scene he looks genuinely touched that tony would visit his mother lol
I mean it’s great he calmed Paulie down, but damn Tony only talking about how Ralph fucking earned “kid in the hospital and just take a look at how he earns” lol
“If you can quote the rules, you can fuckin obey em” so many lines in this were so hard but they get drowned out by the rest of the dialogue cuz it’s just as sensational. What a show.
tony really is great at the double standards, beating or killing people for the slightest reason while talking about how important honor is. Paulie couldnt kill ralph for disrespecting his mother but tony could do it over a horse
