Welcome back, we start part 2 where we left off in part 1 with a Foster Yeoman train but this time hauled by one of the new class 59s, While the locomotives were designated by BR as Class 59 and manned by BR staff, they were owned and maintained by Foster Yeoman; the first major company to run private locomotives on BR track.

Another great video and all that lovely Lima!!! Thanks for taking the time to make it. The only point I would pick up on though was reference the Coal Sector class 31's. To my knowledge they generally worked the Nuclear Flask trains in pairs so that they had a second locomotive should one go 'pop', and the only time they came near MGR workings was when they were booked on to the Arpley Jct (Warrington) drawback duty, which they worked as a singleton. The lack of MGR work was due to them not having slow speed control fitted. Looking forward to the next part. 😀

I realised I missed some of your comment. I just looked at the image of a 31 on MGR that inspired my selection and noted it stated it was a short rake of wagons returning from repair, so really I should have left the loads out. The 31s on flasks, you are quite right the would use a pair but latterly singles were seen. Thanks for the info

The success of class 59 was the tried and tested emd 645 V16 two-stroke prim mover that was used extensively in most US locos in one form or another! I seem to remember they were giving foster yeoman 97% availability? Something we couldn't achieve back in the day! You only have to look at the Brush 5 class 60 to see how British locomotive building was ? The 56 was a great locomotive based on the 47, but with the Ruston Paxman V16 ,these engines sound great when recovering from wheel slip on a wet rail! Lima was a game changer for 00 modelling with many new models appearing in multi colours over the years! Many of the types are still being pedalled out by Hornby even now?

No problem, I like your layout too. Nicely detailed but with good use of pre made buildings. A real nice balance and something I'd hope to achieve. Do you have any videos showing it in its entirety?

This is really taking me back both in terms of the railway and the modelling scene of the time. I remember a chap called John at Broxbourne MRC who could never get enough Lima ARC hoppers for his 59. Hornby's Top Link packaging was a thing and the new locomotive was the 92. Great memories of watching the freight flows through Anglia and March. Still too early for me though. I wouldn't get on the railway until WAGN :) I wonder what Lima would be like if it still existed as an independent business today? Or Vi trains I believe they became.

hahah glad to be your personal Dr Who lol it's amazing how much history there is eh. Ah if only Lima had carried on. Wonderful models

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I never understood the reputation. That chap John must have owned damn near everything they made. I don't think I ever saw the same locomotive twice! They always seemed solid performers at the club on long rakes of wagons or coaches. Certainly didn't derail as easily as some modern models. I had a 155 super sprinter that must have put in some miles! The only complaint I have about the video is the sound quality is too good. For that classic railway training video feel you need to stand in a broom cupboard with a karaoke mic while narrating lol.

I did enjoy that Lima 60 trundling around. Your 37 purchase was money well spent! As you may recall, I too am a fan of Lima diesels. Do you know a way of removing the huge tension lock couplings without causing permanent damage?

Excellent professional video (again) - well done Mike! 👍 An impressively extensive collection of models there.... 😎 Do you remember thebasic 'guard' facility on the rear of 'binliner' container trains for reversing? 🙂 Saw my first 59 hauling fifty-plus wagons with complete ease at a crawl through Salisbury station. If I recall correctly the 59s did not have steerable axles (unlike the 66s). 🌞 Trainload operation featured in the infamous 'Reshaping of British Railways' report....🧐

Many thanks :) Yes nice to get them out for a run, now considering my Green Diesel fleet lol. No never did see the binliner, tell me more? Yes it can't be disputed the 59s are remarkable machines, did I hear right that they never shut them down?

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Mike, I suspect they are often left idling for extended periods of time although the actual fuel used in doing so isn’t high. The engines are 3,300hp type EMD 645E3C (the basic two-stroke design dates back to 1965) although this 16-cylinder /116.5 tonne (turbo charged) design has now been phased out in favour of four-stroke designs (due to emission regulations in the US). Of a 45-degree ‘V’ configuration, type number ‘645’ comes each of cylinders having a capacity of 645 cu. in. (around 10.6 litres) - total engine capacity is 10,320 cu. in. (169 litres). BTW the class 57 locomotives use a similar design - 12-cylinder 645E3 and 645F3B The 'Binliner' brake was basically little more than a tin shed containing a brake valve mounted in place of a container on one end of an ex.'Freightliner' flatwagon. The 'Binliners' were containerised recycled waste and the brake was only used when being propelled down branches such as at Bristol's Waste Transfer Terminal at Barrow Road on the former Midland route - the train ended up at Calvert. Bristol service operated between 1985-2010 and I probably saw the train propelling c.1993).

There was another coal hopper used but has never been made into a model wagon. This coal hopper was longer than a MGR hopper and was designed to swing to either side these were used at the Avenue Coke works and also the Bolsover Coke works. The idea was after the coal load was collected at the pit it would be taken to the Avenue then the load was tipped onto a conveyer belt to be sorted out. Another wagon used by both works was a super strong tanker designed for impacts and derailments. The tankers transported chemicals one still survives today after a deep clean none of the hoppers do. After the Avenue closed in November 1992 the site was left derelict for about ten years it has taken as much time again to clean up the site once dubbed the most toxic in Europe now as housing estate on it.

@petercole2092

I don't like people losing their jobs or industry but closing the Avenue was a good thing. The former workers in later life had cancers or breathing problems also people who lived near the works also had health issues. It took millions of pounds to clear up the site how toxic it remains is unknown. That's why I think none of the hoppers were saved just too contaminated to keep.
