The Story of Mt Melanie Gold Mines
Today's episode is a brief look back into the history of the Marodian Goldfields. The Marodian Goldfields comprised of the Mt Melanie Mines, The Mt Ruby Mine, The Mt Scougal Mine, The XYZ mine, The Butcher Gold Mines and many, many more smaller workings. Most of these gold, silver and antimony mines had far better success in their years worked than the later years of Mt Melanie. The record and research we found on Melanie, show the mines was operated with great success just before the first world war. This was under the management of mine manager, Mr Scougall. Post-World War 1 the mine had a very different fate. This is the portion of Mt Melanies history that we chose to where start todays QAM episode. We hope you enjoy this week's episode
Important note. Mt Melanie is situated on privately leased land. QAM had permission to access and film this episode. Accessing land without express permission from lease owners could constitute trespass.

Very interesting , i love hearing the history of these old mines , my dad was a timber cutter in his younger years and lived in Kilcoy and told me once about the mining the Chinese did at Jimna when the mining started in Gympie , i don't know how much gold they took but they were there for a while , my dad cut timber in that area sometimes and said he found there old cemetery , Sunday creek apparently is still pretty good to pan for alluvial gold , i heard of a guy that had a small dredge and got about 6 oz in one day there but that could have been exaggerated , where i live there a few old mines around Camp Mountain that didn't have much gold , i believe the government encouraged people to mine there guring the depression years .

Thanks for tuning in Ray. Yes the hardrock reef miners never hit good ground around Camp Mountain. It certainly didn't stop them going after it though! The earlier alluvial operations were much more profitable. Pre-Gympie, the government were paying up to $600 to anyone who could prove gold bearing ground. Every father and son not already employed headed west into the ranges as amatuer prospectors. That was a lot of money in the late 1850s when QLD was still a colony. That's what I would have been doing. Packing my pick and pan and heading into the hills. Eb. QAM.

Thanks mate. We are meeting Allen in the new year to film an episode on the Scottish mine in Gympie. His knowledge of those huge Gold Mines is simply amazing.
