I was there in Sausalito,went with My father ,we drove 500 Mlles to get there in a Chevrolet Impala 1974 v8 350 with 400 HP.,it was summer and we had a huge full moon,we had chemestry that night, it was a magical concert. Jimmy's playing was outstanding.i think we got to see one of the best page plant show of the page plant era. God bless.

I was in Mexico in mid to late 90s at a news stand in the airport, to my great surprise a magazine jumped off the rack at me. Page & plant South American tour documentary focusing on Buenos Aires and Rio. Including set lists and tons of photos. Still a treasure to this day. Same as your videos are a treasure to the Zep community.

So many metals heads to this day in Chile. If there was such a thing as Led Zeppelin touring even more ground, South Ameirca was the key to the next level. I think you nailed it with the analysis of Plant and Page. Jimmy had so much downtime in the 80s that it did not seem likely that he could be in such top form in the mid 90s.
Absolutely. Led Zeppelin 80s markets would have grown and leave so many bands out from the jackpot. The more you think of this, some theories arise as to the ending for the band. Jimmy's greatest comeback was the 90s and i feel....Robert hated that.

Loving this series. This Curitiba boy grew up in the US on Rush, Police, and grunge, catching up to Zep around the time of Unledded. First five albums are incontrovertible masterpieces, and the back half of the discography always had me feeling like I'd missed chapters in a book. Your channel has filled those gaps in, and then some. Love your degree of detail and historical perspective. A lot of the live footage you share has me wishing for more info, as I know song titles but not necessarily every passage, especially when expanded or jammed on. Helpful would be overlays like song title, section, and where in the setlist the footage is (e.g. "Custard Pie, bridge with Page jam, 15th song out of 30") or something like that, just for a sense of perspective. You have lots of interesting observations that will help the live material for novices like me. 🙂

I will definitely cover Plant's post 2007 discography, i absolutely love those albums, even if they are mostly covers. Your suggestion on the adding captions for the footage makes sense, thank you for telling me. Editing these snippets from concerts its a painstaking process let me tell you haha. A very important point to note is the amount of shows verses the time, Im really impressed you brought this up. Zeppelin didn't actually tour very hard at all after the '73 tour, and I feel their live performances suffered because of this, there were many reasons why, but at the end of the day touring make a band tight and this is what I like about this 94-98 period, Page finally had a chance to find the groove and focus on his playing. I have quite a few bootlegs of Page Plant shows and they really gelled for the most part. The band really locked in and Page was finally playing like the legend he is...
Kev i am glad you enjoyed these ESPN-like stats. When i saw the total number of shows i was like wow...Page and Plant really was the greatest what if continuation of the Zeppelin story, for better or worse. Their live performances post 1973 suffered. It was a different band. The second incarnation i would say. The third was the "first reunion" 1978 after the tragic events of 1977. Jimmy Page showed the world in the 90s he was still the Living Legend who deserved praise. Robert i think, doesn't want anyone else to be happy but him. I've met so many musicians like him in the past....trust me.

I see your assessment of plant in 96. I guess I can see plant getting more disconnected because page was “taking over” really digging his heels in. Page did sacrifice to play with plant again but was his intention to try and get plant to write with him? They did and maybe too much sacrifice for Plant just not really deliver.

I’ve watched about a half dozen episodes and have to say you do a good storyline. I would agree with most points but respectively disagree on others. I’ve known these cats beginning in 1966 when Yardbirds played at Staples High School. I was 6 years old and they visited my aunts house to kill time after the show awaiting for a late train back to nyc. Attended so many Zep shows in the 1970’s I couldn’t count them. Cozy Powell was my racing buddy and spent much time with Robert on his early solo albums. One day I’ll post the true meaning or story behind Big Log or even radioactive. Enjoy them while they are still with us, we lost Beck earlier this year.

Mighty Rearranger is like Robert Plant having another go at Fate of Nations. Mighty Rearranger has the same political & social themes and musical origins as Fate of Nations, but the band is tighter and the tracks have a sharper punch. Mighty Rearranger is the result of Plant going back to his past to find himself (Page & Plant). But he realized he couldn't recreate who he was. Robert Plant needed to be born again .
Robert Plant's career after Page & Plant is much like what he did after leaving Led Zeppelin. He started to work with musicians he knew as a kid, and started playing strictly cover tunes at small local venues.

Wowee! Jose my dear friend you have again put together some seriously rare and compelling footage, and your passionate commentary brings it all together in a way that leaves me glued and rewatching many sections. Now here's the thing,a memory resuscitation for me and maybe any fellow viewers out there? I distinctly, distinctly remember an advert in a music magazine, maybe a newspaper, that part I can't remember...... but, it centred around the reunion of Jimmy and Robert and although I can't remember the precise wording, it describes the reunion as not just the evolution of Led Zeppelin, but an event that was an absolutely crucial, essential element needed in the peaceful development and advance of humanity itself. It really was THAT serious. It implored not just Jimmy and Robert but the entire world to embrace and support this with every ounce of strength and passion. It had all the hallmarks of a regular advert that could well have been selling a car! But, there was nothing about it that was tongue in cheek, light hearted, no this was really, really serious! At least that's how I interpreted it! I soooo wish I had kept it. If anyone can shed any light on this I would be fascinated. It wasn't a dream! It implied that the music of Led Zeppelin had kinda been channelled via the Band from the earliest mists of the beginning of time,y'know? Which, to me, sometimes it really feels that way! I have a very romantic, King Arthur style take on not just Led Zeppelin but life itself, so I do remember the advert really touched me. It could well have been an elaborate prank! There's something about these set lists and magic on this shows that no other revival set had. Thank you Martin for tuning into these 1990s episodes. At first i was afraid of going into so much footage, but now, i am enjoying the story as i walk close to 1998, probably my favorite year of the 90s.
I think Plant during his solo years always wanted to be contemporary artist playing what is relevant today. In 1996 he ended up playing old stuff decades old. It must have been deadly for his ego as an artist. He always wanted to be Robert Plant not Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. I think he finally found peace in duet with Alison Krauss and critical acclaim ofcourse.
Yes! Alison was a gamechanger for him. I don't like Robert Plant trying to be Zeppelin after 1980. I enjoy his solo output, he did the right thing not touring with Page in 2008 you know? And even my hardcore Zepp fan self can admit this!

He is the only one from the band who really know what LZ is all about: youth, cockines, egocentrizm, improvisation, taking chances, fan and drugs (he said something like that in some interview). After Karac death he lost intrest in all of that. They lured him back, but Bonham death was last and final nail to LZ coffin. Page and Plant project was good for business for both of them (career wise they both were in deep troubles), but playing decades old stuff with jukebox sound even if in new arregments... it was death for him as an artist. P&P was all about headlines and quick buck.
@@williamhiles7404 I wouldn't knew that because I follow one rule: never ever meet your idols. So probably I would ignored him too but for different reason. For me he still is the best rock vocalist there is (voice range have nothing to do with it). Listen to "Shake my tree" with Coverdale and than with Plant. Coverdale sing, Plant telling a story. His instinct as an interpretator is unmached. I saw snipets of some contemporary interviews here and there, he seems to me as a very humble down to earth guy. I think Percy is long long gone.

Both the South American shows and Japanese shows closing out the 1996 legs were the best I think of the whole first run of Page & Plant! They played so much more Led Zeppelin like then they did in most of the European and US shows I've always felt. All of the concerts were enjoyable and good but I think South America and Japan or the best for the 95/96 shows. Thanks for another great documentary! Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
You know, i think the closing legs (no pun intended, sounds like a that's what she said joke from the office though) are AMAZING. The way resting since October 1995 helped them regain momentum proved a smart decision. Australia is particularly musical, i think them knowing it was over made them happy lol. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I bet you are right on the way they were feeling after the short rest in 1995 and and then coming back for the final two months in 1996. I had never thought of that but it makes great sense indeed. Yeah they had to lighten the load, which probably made things a lot easier as they traveled again in 1998, with the Egyptian musicians. While they were great musicians, I'm kind of glad they didn't make it like 1995 for the final tour in 1998 also. That sure helped it sound a lot more Led Zeppelin. I'm sure they lightened their loads hehe a lot. Yes in 1998 it was a sound closer to Zepp in 1980 for sure. Just a small observation, hope i don"t sound like a snob but the 1998 had no Egyptian ensembles. They left after 1996 :)
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Right,, that's what I liked about 1998. They didn't have the Egyptian orchestra and it was definitely more Zeppelin sounding then indeed! Plus, even though they didn't have JPJ with them and I wish they had, even No Quarter sounded much more like it should have compared to 1995 when it was messed with. No Quarter live has always been one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs in their years of playing it live. I was disappointed with that specific song in the way they did it in 1995 and without John Paul Jones too. At first I wondered if they purposely ruined the sound of that song since it was often introduced live by Robert Plant saying something like "...John Paul Jones No Quarter...". In 1995 it made me wonder if both Page and Plant were angry with him and that's why they didn't include him and then they went and ruined the song? That was just a thought that went through my head at the time anyway. But I was glad that they at least played it a lot more accurately and Led Zeppelin like in 1998. I personally think they realized that most of us wanted to hear it sounding like it used to as opposed to the new Egyptian rendition of it back then. I could be wrong and it's all speculation? But I was definitely a lot more happy with the 1998 shows than with the 1995. And I still liked the 1995 shows too. I was just glad to see at least Page and Plant were doing something together again and playing the Led Zeppelin music :-) I'm really glad they all got together for the final show on 12/10/2007 also. It was good to get one last Led Zeppelin show before it was so late they wouldn't be able to pull it off. I know that it's in a different key on the songs but they got together and did it and I'm really glad they did. And it was with JPJ too! I've really enjoyed your projects and documentaries on Led Zeppelin and the members in different years. You do a great job and have a lot of great live sources you're able to add as well. I love all my videos of the South American tour. They are great. Edit : Just one thing, Jose, my Led Zeppelin magazine I got last year says they played just over 600 shows in their day, and there is a book that came out last year by one of the photographers that traveled with them, I can't recall his name, but it's titled 'Evenings With Led Zeppelin' that details all shows, date & year, that should total that. Re. comments about Robert starting approx. 17:37, you nailed it. This is exactly how I feel. He had a successful solo career and the first 4 albums were good. I don't think anyone was expecting LZ and the band was great. I saw a clip of him at some Festival in England in the early (90-91) 90's and his new band were dressed like Motley Crue and seemed more concerned with doing leg kicks after a riff than actually playing but that's a different thread ...I remember the keyboardist being particularly cringy though. I understand wanting to see Page and Plant (for the same reason I saw him in Vancouver in the first solo tour when I was 15) and I can't fault Robert when he's offered millions but...I personally found the whole Page & Plant and Unledded a little distasteful...probably mostly due to my age. I got the sense after 1980 and Bonham's passing that he didn't want to wallow in nostalgia and he moved on. Again, this is just my personal opinion and I wouldn't for a second deny that for the people that attended the concerts it was fantastic. Am loving these videos, love the deep dive and the details, keep 'em coming. (And I agree about Meatloaf, it's showtunes...hated it when it came out, still do...I can't stand that Jim Steinman crap).

Love ZEPPELIN have since my mom bought me ZEPPELIN 4 and House's of the Holy on cassette waaaayyyy back in 1985 but I lost of respect for Page/Plant after I heard how they did JPJ that way But still the best Band of the 70s if not all time

Page&Plant bruoght the percussionists and strings, but forgot to bring Porl Thompson to Brasil. In a couple of songs a second guitar player was missed.
Rio was great plant and page both on fire. No porl, page was taking over I guess and imop peaking. The show did drag then second half. For me the highlights were the Openers and SIBLU, TSRTS, encores

Pause at 2:48 Page is like 4 years older than plant. Page didn’t spend the entire 1980s fighting, stressing about feeding a giant ego “having a solo career” + nonstop worrying about what everyone else is doing. Yep it seems that +4 years AND a near decade H addiction still has one looking younger than all of that fragile ego, condescending behavior, worrying (and likely a closet alcoholic). I was sifting through songs and memories the other day, and identifying where the Eastern influence first appeared. Dancing Days was where my mind landed initially. The flat 5 note and scale was obviously inspired by one of those trips to Morocco. And before that, Friends from Album III. The 11 or 13 chords in No Quarter, obviously, with the striking dissonance. All before you get to Kashmir and In The Light. Some of Robert's melodizing in the fadeout of Four Sticks. Zeppelin's versions of it were always darker and more mysterious than The Beatles. Jimmy's such a great composer and musical cook, he could take things further, and transform them more. It was Robert's whirling dervish act that set me off on it. I'd be dizzy, but I guess that's the point? Or it depends on how you do it. Anyway, I don't always have things to say right after an episode. But interesting digesting takes place over here. Thanks for the creative fodder.
All these musical explorations you mentioned only worked because they had Jones to make them flow. Jimmy on his own couldn't. Proof of this, Kashmir! I'm sure not crediting Jones for the orchestral arrangement still hurts.

Plant took his first 3 albums as an opportunity to shift musically. "Half of my reason for doing this, is for my ego, so now I'm looking to stretch all the time", he said in a 1985 interview with Philip Bashe. On the other "half", possibly his rock star lifestyle. Cos', when Shaken and Stirren brought low sales, bad critics and empty seats on tour with fans asking for Zep songs, he and Bill Curbishley suddenly remembered the thing Plant was known to be good at: blues, with the proper guitar tone and volume. Thus, his next album, Now And Zen, integrated that, plus some extra ingredients for success: a few hits, and Jimmy Page playing two rocking guitar solos on it. On the face of failure, Plant learned to enjoy his past success.
But remember Shaken could have been better but Robert insisted on Robbie Blunt play that crappy synth guitar. Take those sounds out and the album had a chance....
Not sure about that material. To me It sounded like The Police doing intellectual rock for the Miami Vice soundtrack. But, being benevolent too, let's say that exploring new territories does not necessarily mean you find something. Ross Halfin once told Plant that Shaken n' Stirred was horrible and he replied, "How dare you, it's the spirit of Julian Cope!". But the public wasn't expecting that nor asking for it, and his band was shouting and screaming too. Plant had to do a musical twist in his solo career to preserve his relevance and incomes.

when Bonham died not only did Zeppelin die it created a pitiful 2 man cover band, but hey it's all about the money and they certainly "cashed" in on it, meanwhile throwing not even a bone to Jonsey.
Robert also seemed intent on being the he-man in the 90's: sleeveless shirts, with biceps bulging way past 70's levels, and pushing hard. Hey, we're in South America, so hats off to latin machismo, right? But the HOF performance itself (I know, still on last episode) was brutal and graceless. Forced. The Led overtook the pencil, and forced the blimp into the ground. This is my first time viewing all this, like I said. I was elsewhere. Thankfully. I lost interest after Bonham was gone. So I gave that Elephant Ride album a brief listen. The singer is definitely annoying and the single they made a video for likely didn't earn them many fans.
Yeah, it's down to the singer right? I feel the instrumentals are great by themselves, but jeez, vocals were like throwing paint into a delicate piece from the baroque period lol.
I believe Plant knows full well Stairway was a blatant rip off from the word go and wants to distance himself as much as he can. No one can dispute Pagey's ability to take what amounted to a drone dull bit of composition and rework it into a classic masterpiece as much as no one can dispute where the original idea came from.
A blatant rip-off? Let me guess from the Spirit song which has a few similar chords but otherwise sounds nothing like Stairway. Your ass is dripping buttermilk with that statement.
Stairway is not a rip off from Taurus. If we are talking about the 4 note descending bass line in the opening arpeggio section, i've got news for you, it's featured in many classical pieces AND Latinamerican Salsa for example. This is why the won the case against them, it wasn't corporate lobbying, but musical theory :) Now if you want to insist it's a rip-off i hope you are a composer yourself and know how hard it is to come up with songs, nevermind HITS.
