This is why I love JRE - this information isn't anything new, but Joe still is attentive and respectful and lets the guy talk and break stuff down for people like me who haven't watched any of the documentaries and stuff on Coke's history
Joe Rogan has the RU-vid channel with the most intellectually needy opportunists I've ever witnessed. It never misses to have comments like this at the top.
I had Bartow as a professor a few years ago for history. Growing up it was always my least favorite subject, but he made it so engaging and it ended up being one of my favorite classes I took in undergrad. Great to see him on here now
@Ryan G It was a great experience. I had him in the spring of 2019. The class was called "Making America Modern" and covered from the civil war up until the 2000's. I still remember on the first day, sitting in the front row and seeing Bart setting up the computer for class and thinking "there's no way this young guy is our professor." As class is getting started, the speakers in the room begin to play what sounded like something my great grandparents would've listened to. Sure enough, the moment the song is over, the clock finishes turning, and he makes his introduction and talks about how it was one of the most popular songs towards the end of the civil war. From that moment forward, every class would begin with him perfectly timing up a song from the time period we were studying to where it would end the SECOND class was supposed to start. He explained how it would help us get grounded for the class and to just come in, sit down, close your eyes, and pretend you are in that time period. He would sometimes give us things to think about that were relevant for that period as the music was playing and it was a really fun thought experiment and relaxing way to start class! At some point he told us about how he used to DJ, and it was fun to see both his passion for that and experience music that otherwise would be lost in history as far as I was concerned. Looking back I think it was the only class I have taken where I actually stayed in the front the whole semester just because of how engaged he kept us. We would sometimes watch short documentaries, and he even made it a point to bring in his vietnam vet father (although I don't remember if he was able to for our group) to help us see a REALISTIC view of history and not just the clean version the average book wanted us to see. As I am writing this I am looking back at my emails with Bart and remembering a conversation in person and over email about Hetch Hetchy Valley and the conservation movement (we talked about it in class and I had purchased a hat he wanted to see in support of restoring the valley). He would always tell us the university will PAY for anyone to have lunch with him through a "take your professor to lunch" program that I told myself I would do all semester and never did. Free lunch with an awesome guy, don't know why I never took time to do it. I am finally graduating this spring, and I'm going to see if it is too late or not to do so, but I'd really like to do that.
@@maxstarvaggi anyone who excuses black crime by blaming it on a cola and then those magical white supremacists is a fool. Once he said that I knew what kind of ethnomasochist he is. Notice how there is no Asian Lives Matter? Ever wonder why
True story: I once told a teacher that cocaine used to be in Coca-Cola when I was a child and she shouted "that is NOT true." My favorite Coke story is about the "White Coke" made to look like vodka for the Russian General Zhukov in the USSR where it was prohibited.
OK yes we all know that but no one has dived into the intricacies of what actually happened. This guy is explaining everything behind it. Y’all probably knew the “ coke used to actually be made with Coke” fact I’m not the full on explanation
This guest wrote several books on Coca Cola and really knows his stuff, Joe having a guest discuss their expertise is a main point of the show. A lot of haters that clearly didn't watch the whole episode or know who the guest is are acting like Joe is the expert here.
A lot of jaded people in the comments. Enjoy the dudes passion for a certain topic in history. Christ. How many books on Alexander the Great you think exist?
Bartow Elmore was my History professor a few years back in 2014. He was such an intersting guy - Loved his class! He brought DJ equpiment in and scratched records for us on the last day of class after finals.

I lived in S.America and chewed coca leave daily for months. After I left did not even have 1 day of addiction withdraws. Cleanest drug I ever did. Coca leaves are amazing!
Stimulants do not facilitate physical dependence, just psychological. That's why people who blame everything on their meth and cocaine additions are merely weak minded individuals.
@@PunkMartyr he probably unironically plays a game boy color and goes around telling people they've invented a handheld device that you control a little man inside
The truth all should stay aware of when watching A few faves like Joe-keep beverages away from your mouth unless you have to watch it twice after clear nose frm coffee or wipe table or couch frm said soda
Even if his stories arent as exciting as he makes em out to be , its his enthusiasm and love for the material which makes it entertaining and fun to listen to. I hope he also maybe teaches part time. Would be a great professor.
Yea but it’s only trace amounts of meth. You’d have to have at least 12 pringles to reach same amount of street meth that could be considered a risk of overdose.
I just went to the Georgia Coke factory last week. I remember as a child going there. The hostess told us original coke had "coke" in it. I was quite disappointed when they didn't say anything about it this time. I wanted my daughter to remember it as well.
Hey there! Some years ago I and 3 other family members spent a month in Peru. When we came to the higher elevations we were given coca tea every morning. There is also coca candy. Yes, the native Peruvians have long used it by chewing the leaves. Plus they used it in trade. Back then - and even now - the rural natives do not go out without it ~ just like you wouldn't go out without your wallet (or maybe a debit card). Believe me, the natural leaves do not have any effect like cocaine! Sure, it was weird at first for this group of elderly people (58-88 Yrs), but it sure helped serve the purpose of being able to manage the very high elevations.
Imagine a world where you could grow your own coca leaves or buy them cheap and chew on em instead of the bunk/laced shit that will hurt and/or kill you. Such a cool war
I have a big... BIG... BIIIIGGGGG... muscles!!! HAHAHA!!! What did you think I was going for? That's so D1RTY of you! GAGAGAGA!!! I am the funniest RU-vidr ever! Maybe that's the reason why I have TWO (!!!) HANDSOME (!) GIRLFRIENDS. Thanks for being alive, dear gra
I’m not sure he discussed it in the podcast but CocaCola renamed the soda to Fanta so they could sell it in Nazi Germany during WWII. Cause Coca-Cola was an American household name
Another fun fact: John Pimberton was a confederate soldier during the civil war, and became addicted to morphine during his time in battle. He originally created Coca Cola, to wean himself off of morphine.
@@MisterWealth I wouldn't go that far but why he is talking about this like we don't already know all of this is beyond me. Very, very old news. But he seems very sure that he's dropping knowledge, lol.
I did not know Coke was flavored with kola beans, I didn't know they grew coca on Hawaii, and I didn't know that there was a push to modify the coca plant to be cocaine free. So someone, somewhere is getting something out of this guest. I'm sure the most popular speaker on earth knows how to select his guests better than you.
I learned about this in college and it shocked me back then but no knowing How many secrets the government keeps from us & how much pharmaceuticals were used & even as prescribed drugs like amphetamines to housewives in the 50s Almost nothing shocks me today but this guy seems like a great Historian and Story teller who also sounded like a great professor that some of his students wrote about in the comments.
It was harder for me to stop drinking coke than alcohol. All my stomach issues and pain in my knees went away. I wish they would talk about the health issues it causes.
Wow thanks for sharing man. I could assume the stomach issues but the joint pain? Is that specific to Coca-Cola? Or do you suppose that is just any high fructose corn syrup, or processed sugar?
Damn, a lot of smart asses over here. If this ain't news for you, it's definitely news for lots of other people. Joe's podcast is for everybody. That's why I dig when he talks UFOs and ancient history. It gets the otherwise unwise thinking.
Somewhere in Peru or Columbia, someone’s Grandmother is making real CocaCola, bringing it to special occasions and healing her closest friends of all their digestive issues. Id buy a CocaCola Serving Tray with that scene painted in their trademark wholesome 50s soda fountain pin-up style. Medicine woman. There should be coca plants in the background.
Seeing a lot of people missing the point and getting in fights down here over such a petty "issue" . Most of the guests on the podcast share information that's widely available unless its an anecdote. Never seen this reaction when its a researcher or scientist talking about information that's already been published. Guest even states multiple times that it's not new information, its about revisiting the interesting history and diving into more detail related to it. Having someone breakdown an interesting history and the timeline of that history in a cohesive way is no different than 90% of the history/science/research based interviews Joe has done. Cheers all. Keep Kind
@@markmeadows7569 fair enough and that’s totally fair! People just not respect some people enjoying it and some not. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter. Some liked it and learned, some didn’t. That’s life. Cheers man :)
@diane Taylor the man never said anything about .003 of a gram in Coca-Cola so quit trying to confuse your generation he said a small amount which could be any small amount that we have no idea since it's a Coca-Cola secret like I said quit confusing your generation they're already screwed up enough

He sounds so much like Ben from “The Tim Dillon Show” that for a minute I thought Ben had been invited on to confront Joe about the rumors of him and his wife.

I’ve been reading food labels since the 70’s making shopping a solitary experience because it drives everyone else crazy but Coke has remained mysterious
I could imagine your folks going crazy about it. To each their own, I guess. But your behaviour doesn't matter if the producers lie about their product. And use bribes and blackmail to get away with it. Let's just say I don't trust the system as much as you do.
I worked for a chemical company that supplied all the chemicals that went into the drinks and its crazy the amount of different chemicals go into a drink
Yeah that and it can get you high right? ;) I saw someone chew those leaves, got very talkative and started shaking at the end. Medicinal plant haha. I love americans every plant that can get you high is apparently medicinal. Legalize that shit! xD
@@DanielAnderssson that sounds like a psychosomatic thing dude. First of all, coca leaves are not supposed to be eaten, just chewed. But if you eat them you will not get neither talkative nor shaky, it will just give you a bellyache. I'm not even trying to defend coca leaves, they smell like shit.
I've had coca Tea and i ate the leaves after. Not any stomach ache what so ever, don't know what you're talking about. Also I think it was the best tea i ever had taste wise. Just a pinch of dried Coca leaves & hot water.
It’s all new to me. Not the cocaine in Coca-Cola, but all the details. Especially growing coca in Hawaii. Pretty darn cool. Now I think I’ll finally download Spotify. Never really thought this day would come :(

Cocaine and coca is used interchangeably….I’m confused. Joe, a bundle of coca leaves is not expensive. You can buy an huge potato sack worth in Bolivia for under $100.
I wish Joey coco Diaz was there to set the record straight. “Let me tell you something Joe Rogan. In the summer of 1984, I lived in an apartment - snowman village and had a friend named chicken hawk. It was a Wednesday night, right after taking a massive shit…there was a yellow coke ring around the toilet because I dumped it the night before after being paranoid.”😂
What's hilarious about this story is that the exact opposite happened when Four Loko first came out 😂 It used to have caffeine in it but then people started dying from heart attacks because they were drinking too many of them at the same time and they had to take out the caffeine. Today, they are sold without caffeine.
They didn't just have caffeine, it was a "blend" of several energy ingredients. Doesn't make sense that the original formula was banned when everyone can still go to any bar and order a vodka and red bull, same thing.
he stated multiple times that this isn’t new or crazy information,he’s talking about something he put his time and effort into wouldn’t you be passionate about it?
You sound like a meathead who struggled to understand the content. The guy isnt making a story up, hes telling about his research, which is what pretty much what every guest does who Joe has on who isnt a personal friend.

@@frozen1762 In this specific situation I agree he is going through the motions but you make it sound as if Joe is a sell out or something. I mean the conversation at this point wasn't it or he was being fed information he already knew but this is an obvious act of politeness because Joe most likely understand there are people who don't know about this so to cut dude off would be doing a diservice to his audience. Basicslly Joe just isn't enthused at this moment in their conversation.
@@devilsadvocate1685 I was talking in general. Since moving from RU-vid and getting his money Joe doesn't give AF anymore. Fire has gone out of him. So maybe it was genuine surprise and silence because he wasn't listening. I doubt it was politeness. Does that makes him a sellout? Maybe, but he always was just an animated one, not like now.
Okay this has been researched and reported to death. Do we as a society forget everything every twenty years and then somebody shows up and says: 'You won't believe this but...'
I grew up with the Barron’s of Rome Ga. whom was one of the original three families in Ga to bottle Coke. I’ve seen the coca infused antique bottle. Really cool.
A American friend of mine living as an expat on a beach in Mexico about fifteen years ago was really into this question of what happens to the coca leaves for Coca Cola. We found out all about the extraction and the laws to bring the leaves in and how the extracted cocaine was used for legal medicine. BUT the thing I was never able to find at the time was about the balance of how much Coke was manufactured and how much cocaine-derived medicine was manufactured? Did the demand for the medicines just increase in lockstep over the years and decades with the increasing popularity of Coke, or was there an excess? Or did demand for the medicinces always outstrip the supply no matter how much Coke was made?
I worked for coke back in the late ninety's and part of your new hire was learning the history of coca-cola. Interesting to this day the concentrate used to make coke is made in peru and still uses the coca leaf. But all the cocaine is extracted and sold to for pharma use. Its all very highly controlled by the dea.
I think it's hilarious that we've tried banning alcohol, weed, and cocaine, but the motivations for banning weed and cocaine are always described as "racist". So dumb.
Racism and White Supremacy were behind the original motives for criminalizing cocaine and weed. It is a fact of history. What is dumb, is your attempt to dismiss and ignore the impact of racism in this matter. Have you ever heard of Robin DeAngelo's book, "White Fragility"? It sounds like you would learn a lot about yourself by reading it.
