It felt like a shooting game randomly sandwiched in between a middling episode of The Harley Quinn Show. I would probably be more interested if the characters looked more fun and dynamic to play, I think the sequel could probably improve the formula a lot. Jup, it says something, when my father has better takes on superhero media. And his basic take is: "Only Americans need some magical super human to solve their problems. There is nothing heroic about it. Heroic means triumphing against all odds."
The way shad talks about superheros and comics makes me feel like he's never actually engaged with superhero media beyond the cultural osmosis of certain characters being so popular you kind of know about them whether you read comics or not
Shout out to Shad's "review" of My Hero Academia, where 80% of his praise for the show was how hot the teenage girls were. Because western comics "don't allow girls to be hot anymore"
There's an alarming amount of people in the X-Men fandom who regard all media starring members of demographic minorities (or merely even members of demographic minorities being given equal narrative weight as characters who are straight white Christian men) as 'woke trash'. Because if there's anything X-Men is about, it's minorities being kept firmly under the majority's heel... :(
We are huge comic fans, yet can't name more than five characters anybody could name. They just mumble once they have used up the few they can remember.

I don't know how they can be comic fans and call this any kind of superhero character assassination or whatever. I don't really like to gatekeep but "what if X character is evil now" and "X character dies in this one" is so ubiquitous is comics that it's a meme. You're allowed to not know that but you can't realy comment with any kind of authority with a surface level awareness... but that's the Shad special

Superman is awesome because it's not about treat, it's about his humanity. He's the beacon of hope for the world, what matter isn't what bad guys his fighting, but his morality as Clark and Kal el.
I have no idea if you are correct or not, but I wouldn't be surprised. I don't play super hero games (at least the ones with comic book source material) because they are almost always bad.

I've always wanted to make a good-natured Batman parody where the main character actually uses his wealth and intelligence to personally aid individuals in need and solve systemic issues, and his villains end up being all the people in places of power who want to perpetuate those issues in order to inflate their own abundant resources. The "Joker" analogue would have to be, like, some billionaire who thinks he's way more intelligent and funny than he actually is, posting bad memes everywhere and acting like he's clever and meaningful.

And you don't even need to get rid of Batman's traditional rogues, either. A lot of them are very dependent on that same system for completely opposite reasons from the people at the top and would still be against Batman. Which gets you interesting team ups against Batman or three way conflicts. At the same time, some characters (Catwomen and Mr. Freeze come to mind) could stop being antagonists as they now align at least somewhat with Batman's new perspective on justice.
The only problem is that as Bruce Wyane he does spend his money on those things, the only reason we don't see such efforts bareing fruit is because the capitialist nature of our media. Hard to keep Gotham a crime ridden hell hole if the root causes are getting solved by the heros

I'm sure he has the ability, it's just that he doesn't actually care about any of these things. This man has NEVER read a comic, his sole interest is in spreading the culture war to the nerd demographic, which has been the right wing's project for a decade now. All he knows is that the party line is "game woke", therefore he needs to make up reasons it's bad for a 20 minute video. These people don't play video games or watch movies, genuinely. They don't know what any of this stuff is, they just want to target the men who enjoy them to try and get them into the right wing cult.
And it's such a strangely common correlation between people with next to no critical thinking skills and people who are in restrictive and oppressive religious systems.
@PlatinumAltaria I think it's much more simple. I have only ever seen him give positive reviews of movies books etc. that explicitly have "the hero's story" as an obvious through line. But not just that they need to have a main character that he can relate to and themes that he would enjoy. Take the movie Juno for example it has the hero's story, it focuses on the decision to keep or abort a pregnancy (something most conservatives love to talk about) and ultimately the main character has the baby which Shad would like but I guarantee he would HATE it because Elliot page plays a woman as the main character, nevermind that he's trans.

Couple things... Shad and crew are demonstrably NOT fans of superheroes based on their public bitch sessions. Second if anyone said the Invincible comic series was bad, I would never ever trust that person's takes on comics ever again.

Batman actually does tackle the systemic issues under the guise of different Wayne charities. He also uses his Bat-tech to keep the city propped up. for example: it was revealed in an issue from the new 52 run that his secret power grid was actively keeping the city power stable.
Batman, Superman, and the flash are some of the most deeply misunderstood characters in DC imho. Like even jakes summarizing Superman is clearly derived from the jokes/ memes about him. I could write paragraphs on how Superman is more than just "alien man strong and unbeatable".

So I'm guessing they never heard of the Injustice games. Superman literally kills the Joker in the opening cinematic (for very understandable reasons), but then the Justice League goes on to be the tyrannical villains of the story. That was 10 years ago. And I'd be extremely surprised if something like that hadn't been done before that point...
And before that the Justice league show and Justice league unlimited had an ep about an alternate universe justice league that turn tyrannical in the mid-late 2000s
The comic started in Jan and the game came out in April of the same year, they probably were already working on it. Also, nobody tell Shad about Shazam in Injustice.
If Jake wants non goofy lanterns. He should check out The Red Lantern Corps. A group of anti heros/sometimes villains full of people and victims who've been through horrific shit. Especially Dexstar. Poor cat didn't deserve to be treated like shit. At least Attriitcus takes good care of him.
I feel like the people upset are the handling are putting their own shit on to it. Mainly the "it feels set in the Arkham universe" etc. I have a strong feeling none of them have read a single suicide squad story let alone the one they riffed this game off of.
The one big mistake of this game I feel is that it's based in the arkham universe and is supposed to be a sequel to the last arkham game. I would have preferred it just did it's own thing rather than tying itself to that for no reason. Other than that the gameplay is just kinda mid. It's not even a bad game just kinda meh.

They are all greedy back stabbing bastards being held together by the fact they will have their head blown off of they dont stay on task. They are charming in their own ways yes. But bastards none the less so them having a game based around looting and shooting/ killing tons of baddies is on par with how a mission of theirs would go. Also you can go straight melee if you want to use boomers boomarangs like in the comics
@@metalfan4u It's more that I find it kind of an uninspired and boring choice of genre for something like this than it just not fitting thematically. It certainly fits better than Avengers doing a similar thing, but my interest definitely plummeted when it turned out that was the case.

Batman comics do have him attempting to address systemic issues. They do it pretty frequently too. It's practically a meme among Batman fans that every other comic will start with him announcing some new initiative or charity or something to address the issues in Gotham. The horror of Gotham City is that even with his vast resources, it's not enough. Off the top of my head the stories Cataclysm, No Man's Land, and The Court of Owls all happen as a direct result of Bruce trying to make systemic changes outside of the Batman persona.
How many X-Men do you think these three wannabes could name, without resorting to google? By that, I mean all the X-MEN spin off comics like X-FACTOR etc. Anybody who isn't a main character in one of the films is gone for a start. Do you think they know what heroes were purged during AOA, or who got brought back, switched sides etc? What happened to Tony Stark, what was different about Wolverine?
I'm genuinely still baffled by the obsession DC has with pushing Suicide Squad into absolutely everything. They've made Amanda Waller an insufferable joke. Once upon a time she was interesting, now she's just if Batman had twice the plot armor and all the edgy.

That discussion of Batman and systemic issues reminds me, there's a recent Spider-Man story (Spider-Man Beyond, to be precise) which presents an interesting concept: Big money companies back both superheroes and supervillains because it provides a _great_ distraction to the news cycle, and you can maneuver their battles to take place in locations where troublesome individuals disappearing gets chalked up to collateral damage.
Look, I'm a DC baby, I'm blissfully unaware of any storylines outside of the films, games, and animated films. Here is the handsdown best suicide squad narrative. Warner Bros, if you use this you owe me money. BATMAN has been kidnapped by DR. HUGO STRANGE and is being held captive in ARKHAM asylum. AMANDA WALLER is charging THE SUICIDE SQUAD with springing Batman and detaining Hugo Strange, as Waller has found evidence that Strange has leveraged Batman's wealth to enrich himself. The squad go on a wild adventure as MARTIAN MANHUNTER shows up to try to stop them from reaching Batman. This complicates things as he takes the members of the squad on a nightmare trip through their psyches. The squad eventually reach Batman, but he doesn't want to leave, as he's realized he's not well and is tired of fighting criminals. The Squad squares off with Batman in an attempt to take him away, but they can't win, and finally they all concede, and accept the fact they're dead meat. It's at this point that Martian Manhunter appears, revealing himself to be Alfred using his guerilla training. Batman has been going to therapy and realized the only way to help the suicide squad was to trick them into doing therapy too, with a little encouragement. Batman sees that his wealth isn't fixing Gotham and was using strange as a cover to slowly defund Waller's governmental programs and slowly improve Gotham's access to social programs, as he knew Waller would never accept his withdrawal of financial support. Batman's game has been completed and he asks the Suicide squad to help him Stop Waller, haven't thought past their, cape-shit ensues, the end. Love y'all, also DC I'm for real, if you use this pony up.
Squirrel Girl is apparently according to villains defeated in the lore the strongest marvel hero to exist. Her base powers are solid but not overpowered, but they have her overcome characters way above her weight class making her canonically the strongest marvel hero.
To be fair to Batman, he's actually pretty invested in rehabilitating his villains and does use his money for that. It's just not that well-known or used outside of specific comics because it's just not what most people consume Batman media for (one of the downsides of attracting all the edgelords I supposoe). But yeah, the comics even give a supernatural reason for Gotham being as bad as it is. Bruce literally would not be able to fix Gotham with all the money in the world because the city is cursed. Like actually cursed. That's why their crime is so bad. It's hilarious.
I love how at moments Jake's batman voice temporarily becomes like a Dave Mustaine voice, in which case if we're talking about rich people who act like the rules don't apply to them and behave "cold and alone" and generally violent, makes perfect sense

They are not as bad as worst guys in that setting, but not as good as better guys either and those better guys aren't that good either being caste-based oligarchy.
I usually agree superman sucks but I do think he can be a useful tool for a good story. Hes at his best either A. When he's evil or B. When the story is more about his psyche than action. He cant be the center of an action based story because he just always wins with minimal effort.

I love the story from the justice league cartoon where batman is caught by the bad guys and he bribes one of them and that guy just goes back to prison without a fight
Spider-Man did not rip off Arkham. The Spider-Man games from the Raimi films were very much the prototype of the Arkham games. LIKE EVERYTHING IN COMICS, it's a cycle of borrowing from each other. If you think anything in anything is original, you should not be on the internet giving an opinion. Invincible is Spider-Man by way of Superman. Come on. There's not been anything new under the sun since friggin' Socrates. We had black millionaire Batman. He was an Avenger for a couple of years, just before the current series.
There's a lot of things that Shad is wrong about, But he's not really wrong about the impact of the Arkham games on games in general and on superhero games after that. And it's okay that the Spider-Man games were influenced by the Arkham game. That's not a bad thing. That's how art and progress in art works. Suicide Squad is in turn influenced by Spider-Man.

Thomas and Martha Wayne tried to solve these problems systemically. The other billionaires hired the mob to whack them. The problem with Bruce is that he never realized that what his parents tried could work, that he can't just get offed the same way because he's fricken batman, or went after the billionaires that had his parents killed directly.
1960's Adam West as Bruce Wayne actually did have a couple of charities going on to help reform criminals in his show. That's the campy, comedy classic that certain people think ruined The Bat, because of the comedy and lack of seriousness and so on, but at the same time, that show had Batman/Bruce Wayne trying to help ex cons become better people. I wouldn't be surprised if other iterations of Batman has Bruce Wayne doing this, but I think Batman in general has more of a rep for beating the living crap out of street level thugs rather than helping them live better, non criminal lives.
the suicide squad game is garbo, but whining that you kill the justice league in a game called "kill the justice league" might be the worst media take chuds have had in quite a while. which is saying something, because they're constantly trying to make the most ridiculous media takes possible.
I wouldn't say killing the justice league is bad, my gripe with it is how it was done, and that this was their first and (unless the game is retconed) last appearance in the Arkhanverse

Good superman media is good when despite the opportunities to abuse the overwhelming power he has, he still end up doing the right thing and putting the needs of others before himself. Bad Superman media generally just does the “god among men” thing, but that ignores the fact that he was Clark Kent before he ever knew he had power. His humanity defines him
Imagine framing what Batman does as “sacrificing his personal happiness for good.” This has been explored ad nauseam. If Bruce really wanted to not be Batman he would quit, arguably he should have quit many times. He does it because Batman is the identity and Bruce is the mask. He’s a traumatized and broken guy who has channeled his entire sense of purpose into beating the shit out of dudes. He does it for himself first and foremost. That doesn’t diminish the character. He’s complicated. Shad just can’t help himself from having opinions about all aspects of geek culture, despite this not being something he has any actual interest in or experience with.
Okay but seriously Batman sucks. He could single-handedly pay for good mental health treatment but he’d rather beat them up. He won’t put them out of their misery but he sure will maim them
Multiple depictions show Bruce funding mental health programs. He's also shown funding clinics, education, soup kitchens, and orphanages, among many others (there's like a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to his charity work). He tends to be depicted as the only thing keeping the city afloat. It's also shown that Bruce will not only former criminals but even his notable rouges to give them a 2nd chance. Bruce, when he's written well, is all about believing that people can change.
I hope one day shad gets the game he wants, where the suicide squad kills the justice league, but every superhero boss fight ends with the characters gently coddling the dying hero’s head in their lap while they tell them how awesome and amazing and wonderful they are. He literally said “desecrate.” As if these are holy symbols that must be venerated. Holy shit

Inspector Gadget is a better Green Lantern than Green Lantern. I wanna like Green Lantern, the color scheme is cool, I dig it, magic ancient aliens ring of the history channel in HD? Little silly, but I'm down. But what he does with the ring is a web images search, and ever since Ask Jeeves or Dogpile became a thing I've liked lantern less and less. Go go Gadget thing-a-ma-jig? Now that shit slaps. Hard to tell if he's funny on purpose or on accident. Love that goofy cyborg.
I can't believe these grown men are having like a "council" meeting to discuss how it hurts their fee fees to see a depiction of their favorite supers getting their asses handed to them. Do you really think it’s not going to affect someone if as a child their rents are murdered in front of them? You maybe don’t know anyone who’s faced hardship like that, but yes it does permanently alter their lives…
I heavily disagree that Superman sucks because his only weakness are those around him. I think he can serve as a very interesting character when properly written. When you have someone who’s practically a god in a world of ants, it can be interesting to consider how his morality might dictate what he does. It can make the story more than dramatic fight scene. You can explore concepts of not fitting in from the perspective of someone who is factually better than everyone else around him, and the isolation that causes. How he knows that he can make the world a better place for everyone he loves, but to do that, he’d have to shed his morals and strip humans of their right to be flawed. And if you juxtapose that with an antagonist like Lex, who, at his best is one of my favorite villains. Iterations of him that hate Superman, not because he thinks he’s an evil alien that’ll turn on humanity, not because he’s a hero and Lex is a villain, not even because he’s someone that cares for the commonfolk (though, could be an interesting examination of how Lex is a villain because he’s an evil billionaire sitting on the backs of the working class), no his best iteration is that he wants humanity to not need an alien to protect them. He doesn’t think Superman will hurt them, he thinks Superman will make them weaker, dependent. Honestly, a well written movie on those two characters could be incredible.
