I love that she uses the stirring as a focal point, because it's the perfect camouflage. There's nothing weird about stirring your tea, in fact it's expected. You can also talk while you're doing it, to misdirect the target. They're literally talking about focal points when she first starts stirring, and he still doesn't notice. By the time it's clear what she's really doing, it's too late. And because it's auditory, you can't block it by just closing your eyes.

Correct. I did see this in the theater, and that descending “WOOOOMB” sound when he sinks into the floor was ear piercing and all encompassing. I heard people in the theater actually gasp when it happened.

The repetition of high pitched rhythms creates a feeling of susceptibility allowing the assailant to engulf your mind and place it under they’re control. Each pitch has a specific rhythm and this pitch patterns repeats every cycle with a different period of the rhythm creating a cyclical yet uneven quality adding to the terror it creates.

Yes, I can see that. I always hear a grinding sound when I sink into sleep paralysis. Once its got me the noise disappears and I only hear the whooshing of the A/C or whatever is around me. It's a dreadful feeling.

You've clearly never experienced sleep paralysis. I suffer with it and have for years now and it's nothing like the film. Sleep paralysis feels like you're fighting for your fkn life by trying to move or lift a certain limb, but you can't and you're fully aware of what's happening but it doesn't matter. It feels like a lifetime but really it's a few minutes, maybe less. I get it a lot. Not everytime I sleep, but, it happens more than once a week. I try and take sleeping tablets, strong ones, that knock me tf out, unfortunately they make me seriously drowsy when I wake up but it's worth it.

The way Chris begs her to wait before sinking is like, genuinely soul crushing, and keeping the shot on her while he begs was perfect. On her side you see how casually she says it, and then repeats it as if it was just another word lost in conversation. If Peele had cut to Chris pleading the shot back to back would’ve been too quick and jarring.

I saw it another way...2 ways indeed. 1-smoking can be likened to opening mind doors for manipulation ('Do you know how dangerous smoking can be ?"- a double speak basically); 2-she's reinforcing in him his surroundings- their house, their rules...their power ("Wait, wait!...too late boy, we got you!'). This is actually how you HEAL Trauma, you bring up the traumatic memory, and sink into the feeling. When you do this you usually cry and release it for good. Only in a horror movie would they inverse the process and make it seem like the worst thing in the world would happen. This is how you HEAL folks.... in horror movies they make it seem evil when its truly transformational .. powerful scene because our egos are desperately afraid of this loss of control...

I've looked into how manipulation and mind control works in cults or prostitution or abusive relationships and trauma is in fact key to this. In response to deep personal trauma a persons mind will shut down in a dissociative state as a defense mecchanism. In this state the mind is easily susceptible to manipulation and can even be reprogrammed and develop split personalities. this movie is a lot about mk ultra mind control

Yep! Started experiencing it about 10 years ago now. I used to feel it constantly, it disappeared, came back again and now it's only sort of here and there. I discovered it was stress and trauma I wasn't dealing with. Very terrifying, but I've learnt to not be so scared that's what diminishes the effects of this weird brain shutdown.

No matter how many comments I read or analyses I've seen of this scene no one EVER talks about the subtle insult at 1:43. When she asks "what about your mother?" And his reaction. Long story short, that would have been the time to go, not because of the hypnotism, but the fact that the mom is aware of his family history and she is so cold about it. He was not in an emotionally safe place.....also "yo mama" is implied. Funny. Deep.

Is it weird to say that this actually happens to me in a dream once? i was in a car and there was this random guy in the drivers seat, don’t know why u didn’t question it but I got in because I assumed it was an Uber, then he drove off and eventually we got to my house but he didn’t stop.. instead he just passed it and started to go faster and faster like 80 to 90 miles an hour. I started to panic a bit. But when I looked away from the driver he disappeared. And the car started to drive by itself. Almost like it was a self driving car. I hear a mans voice

scream and I hear glass shatter. I closed my eyes. But when I open them I’m falling into a black void and I couldn’t move. my arms and legs wouldn’t move. I could control my head a little bit so I try to look up and I see my bedroom. But it was like seeing it from another persons eyes or mine I should say. It was exactly like this scene from this movie to.. I forced my hands to move but they wouldn’t.. and that’s when I woke up. It’s hard to explain it but I tried my best to tell you.

In the real world, hypnotism and hypnosis are about as real as speaking in tongues at a pentecostal church. Most of psychology/psychiatry is religious ideas and constructs from old Greek and Hebrew schools of thought and have very little real scientific substance. In fact, psychology is facing a very serious replication crisis at the moment. Still a frightening scene.
