The Sushi Chef: Culichi Town

Mexican sushi might sound like a made-up term, but we can assure you that it's a real cuisine coming out of East LA (with origins in the Sinaloa region of Mexico). We visit Culichi Town in Bell Gardens, a restaurant considered the leader and originator of Mexican sushi, to see what they are all about. From deep fried crab and shrimp rolls to a live Norteño band to covering almost everything in cream cheese, this is definitely not your typical sushi restaurant by any means. Take note, because their head chef believes Mexican sushi will soon take over the US.

Are people downvoting this because it's 'inauthentic?' Who cares. It looks delicious, and it's not like modern sushi hasn't evolved to adapt to new ingredients and tastes.

Holy shit. If you guys are so in love with "authentic" sushi just live in japan. USA is a place where different cultures mix and the food changes along with it. No food should be immune to change just ,cause of tradition or other non sense.

I don't get why people get offended by him calling this Mexican sushi. ''Oh that's not sushi, oh that's not mexican'. There are no rules to food people when you find inspiration in two different styles and make it your own it's beautiful. This is Mexican sushi, and it looks damn delicious. I think we people should be more open minded in mixing because the kitchen we call ''authenthic'' is a mix already to start with. :)

Well no, it's like copying one thing and replacing some aspects and attempting to rebrand it as the original.
@gabe23g

+Sync Conan It's not trying to rebrand it as original. It's just bringing different food options, like the guy in the video days " you don't have to stick to traditions." i think mixing the two was a great idea, and it is not always being mixed. he made traditional sushi dishes too.

I guess this for some japaneses people is like "Taco Bell" for mexicans. I'm mexican but I don't mind "usamericans" or other people making mexican food in their styles. *Fun fact:* _actually no japanese has complained about this but "americans" (US) are complaining and hating for this._

There are so many recipes & u shitted on mexicans with that back hand comment. Taco Bell isnt founded by Mexicans. Unless, I stand corrected? Its practically "boxed food" as most corporations are &controlled by more corporations of distributions.

I actually live in this area. South Gate to be exact. Little sushi spots like this one have been popping up all over. I have had sushi from sushi bars in little Tokyo and fine sushi restaurants in big cities. I recently with to this new Mexican Sushi spot a couple of blocks from my house and I can honestly say that it was the best Sushi I have ever had. One thing people need to know is that they do serve their own twist on sushi by adding local ingredients, but they also now how to make traditional sushi as well. Food is Universal and ever evolving. Don't limit yourself.

In japan sushi is all about using japanese ingredients to make the sushi they like there, but there is no reason why these guys cant make sushi the way they like with their ingredients. after all when japanese chefs came over to california and started making sushi with local ingredients one of the most famous sushi rolls was born, the world renowned "california sushi roll".

Honestly, this Mexican sushi is just about as authentic as most sushi that Americans eat. Things like a California roll, or a spicy tuna roll are just as bad as these. American rolls usually have loads of different colourful and sweet sauces, but in Japan, the only sauces used are usually soy based. Also the ingredients are sometimes different. No one uses avocado or tempura inside of sushi in Japan. There really isn't any reason to get upset about this video and complain about authenticity when you think a spicy tuna roll as authentic.

I thought the only racists and people full of hatred left were old people. I guess I was wrong. Reading the comments shows how many young people still only have love for their own race/culture but none for others. Why can't everyone just appreciate everything other cultures have to offer? And appreciate the mixture of all of them! We are all in this world TOGETHER for a reason. There's no need to hate each other so much! Plus. It's FOOD! Food is awesome and through food, we get to know other people's cultures and incorporate them into our every day lives.

I live in Sinaloa, Mexico, and here you can eat traditional raw sushi (japanese) from japanese masters of sushi, but you can also eat this so called mexican sushi, and let me tell you, both are delicious!
@TheZach941129
@TheZach941129 8 лет назад
lol so many non Japanese talking about "authentic sushi." Sushi varies in different regions because the ingredients are different. Even in Japan they have different styles of making them. Also, it was the Japanese chefs who brought roll style to America because westerners were intimidated at first by the raw fish presented in edomae nigirizushi. Thus, the origin of Sushi in America is already completely different from the traditional Japanese method. So why bash on this guy for trying something regional and different? I bet if these people saw a non japanese chef making real authentic Narezushi and osaka style oshizushi, they wouldn't even consider it as sushi.

I’ve traveled all over the world and my personal experience the seafood from the pacific coast of Mexico has the best seafood in the world! You can find fresh authentic Mexican seafood in Southern California like Los Angeles. Reason is because there’s a huge population of Mexicans from the pacific coast living in Los Angeles for example people from Sinaloa Mexico. I’ve also tried seafood all over Mexico and you can’t compare it to the pacific coast. Also one thing I notice is the people from there are very outgoing and very happy people compare to other parts of Mexico. If you ever go to the pacific coast of Mexico or Los Angeles you must try a good authentic seafood restaurant 👌🏼 they have like 10 different styles of ceviche. The Peruvian ceviche has nothing on the Sinaloense ceviche💯

wow, all these people are butthurt over it not being "authentic" yet this is exactly like when sushi was becoming popular in the states, especially california where they made the cali roll to suit American tastes, I don't see this as any different to any number of "fusion" restaurants that are around these days, people adapt to the tastes and styles they are used to, that's just life.

Stop 'crying', that this doesn't look like Sushi. There is NO RULES for Food. And you know why? Because Food is like Art. It's all about what People wanne create and what they enjoy. All this 'Japanese-Sushi-Defenders' here, doesn't have to like it or eat it. But we all should respect, what others like to do. I don't eat Sushi, just because I don't like raw Fish. But I am pretty fine with it, when they wanne try out something new, some Fusion or something interessting. Some will like it, some not. It's like looking at the 'Mona Lisa'. Some think this is a Masterpiece. For others it's just a Portrait of a Woman. In the End, we all decide, what we wanne eat and what makes us happy. So why can't you stop 'bitching around', because he combines Sushi with mexican Cuisine. Especially in the USA, a Country with such a huge Viarity of Cultures, this is just something, what brings some People together. This is called: Multicultural! People go to this Spot, because they wanne have a good Time. They enjoy the Dishes or maybe they just wanne try something completly new. Honestly, if I would love Sushi, this would be something, I wanne try out.

Nadie.

I love that cream cheese translates into "queso Philadelphia"! Mind you, I assume that we all know that "Philadelphia" cream cheese was born in New York, not Pennsylvania. The thing is, I feel like this restaurant is taking the complete opposite approach to "Mexican sushi" to what I would dream of. Rice, nori, and some sort of meat make a great snack at the 7-11, but if you want to combine the best parts of both cuisines, give me a pristine slice of raw fish paired with a complex and fascinating móle!!

I'm Mexican and I love sushi. A lot...I'm not digging the rolls simply because of the prices. You are being charged the same price for a prepared roll that has cheaper ingredients. They're just glorified California rolls with Latin additions. I'm glad the business is making it and people are trying rolls. It just seems too expensive for me. I'd rather have sushimi for the prices. I also don't live too far away from this place.

I just learned about mexican sushi at lunch from a co-worker at a revolving sushi restaurant. Then i go to my favorite foodies channel on youtube to find a mexican sushi episode about the restaurant my co-worker was telling me about. I was planning to go to TJ for labor day weekend and feast on some mariscos. I think its a sign. I need to try some fresh mexican sashimi lol jk. No, but for reals are there any good mexican sushi restaurants in TJ?

I really want to try this Sushi. I went to Yelp to find out the rating. It seems like only Latinos are welcome. I really want to try your food, maybe you could talk to your staff.

Don't get me wrong, I think there is always a justification for a restaurant, when it is popular and maybe novel. However this series is called The Sushi Chef - and honestly I didn't seen any. Yes, there are "cooks" which are churning out a lot of fusion-sushi, but I could not see anything, which resembles are "philosophy" or what is product driven. Would have been nice as a different "Munchies / Vice documentary" but as "The Sushi Chef" it is just off topic!
