The Taurus M605 Poly .357 Magnum - First Review

Christian Gun Owner - Mark Rogers (Christian Gun Owner)

This little beast of a gun is a hand crushing, merciless mass of control challenging recoil, and backlash with full .357 magnum rounds.
This review includes use of Monarch 158 grain, .357 magnum loads, at 1657 fps, and a power rating of 833 ft pounds. You can get an understanding of how it works with the max loads from this vid.
But, good news is, there is an "ideal" .357 magnum load that trades off in power over the full house loads. It's a trade off in power from that load, but miles ahead of any .38 spl + p load.

I've been shooting for over 55 years, and it always amazes me when guys are, somehow, surprised by the recoil. You are firing a weapon that is designed to put a human being DOWN. The first pistol I ever fired was with my grandfather, when I was 10. It was a Colt 45 revolver, and my first shot sent the gun almost into the top of my head. I had no idea. I shot my first deer at age 14 with a Remington .44 Magnum rifle, from 80 yards. I didn't even know I hit the deer until I got up off of my ass, collected myself, and took a few steps - ears ringing - to find that the deer hadn't taken even a single step. This whole new "it has a lot of kick" movement, with respect to reviewing firearms, has me a bit baffled. My first ever skeet shoot was with an 8 gauge shotgun, and I was on my ass the first, second, and almost third time shooting the gun. I was only 16, but it left an impression on me. Firepower equals FIRE + POWER. If you can't handle it, then don't shoot. The last deer I got with a black-powder rifle was almost 20 years ago. Just don't have the time these days. I shot a buck at 60 yards with 150 grains of black powder with a gun that was basically a musket... .45 caliber. Barrel-loaded, loose powder, with a steel ball. The gun was 52" long, and had a misfire rate of about 30%, give-or-take (Maybe slightly exaggerated - not a fan). When I pulled the trigger, the gun fired, and basically jumped over my shoulder like an excited CAT. There was so much smoke that I had NO idea if I had actually hit anything. I remember collecting myself, and then, after a few minutes, walking out to see what I had accomplished. The buck - a 6 point - was on the ground, but not at all dead. I had hit him in the spine, just behind his shoulder. He was crawling like Sergeant Barnes at the end of Platoon. This was Muzzleloader season. I went back to my blind, grabbed my .45 pistol, walked back out and shot that deer in his head. I ruined a good mount, but told myself I would never do muzzleloader again. Well, I grabbed myself a CVA Wolf this year - .50 caliber, break-action. I'm prepared to give it ONE more try. Oh, and as for the Taurus .357 Protector - it does what it's designed to do. This isn't a target pistol! And don't use .38 loads!

I own this gun. I bought it because I can't always carry my other pistols because I live in South Florida and it's too hot to wear heavy clothes. PROS: Small, lightweight, reliable, .357 caliber, simple to operate, perfect for up close & personal self defense. CONS: weird keyed locking device on the back of the hammer. NO NO NO NO!, poorly manufactured. The cylinder sticks and is difficult to open. Really Taurus??? You couldn't take the time to simply test it? Where is the quality control? The fiber optic rod fell out & now I have a hole where the front sight is instead of a nice fiber optic rod. I like the gun for the reason I carry it... 5 rounds of .357 when I need it. I like the weight, or lack thereof. I won't be purchasing another Taurus firearm due to the low quality manufacturing. I can't blame the gun for it's hard recoil, that is expected. If I need it I want a hard hitting round. I give this gun a 7 out of 10. Compared to my 45 year old S&W model 19, which I consider a work of art, this gun is trash. It has, zero appeal aesthetically. It DOES get the job done ASSUMING you are not interested in RAPID reloading. Lately, due to the crazy Liberals running loose in our society I will have this in my pocket and either my Walther PPQ with 16 rounds & a spare magazine or my Kimber. 45 with two spare mags, on my hip so reloading isn't an issue. UPDATE: I decided to call Taurus about the sticky cylinder. They will be happy to fix the gun under warranty for me, however the turn around time is 12 weeks!!! 12 weeks for warranty work? Either they don't care much for their customers or they make a lot of mistakes during manufacturing and do not catch them with their poor quality control. Which is it Taurus?
@MarkRogersCGO
@MarkRogersCGO 4 года назад
Mine has never been smooth in any part of it. One of the longest, heaviest double action trigger pulls on any revolver I ever held. My cylinder was gritty, but easy enough to open when I bought it. But as I shot it more and more, it became harder and harder, until I ended up having to push the release lever and bump the cylinder against a firm surface to get it open. In examining it, I couldn't visually determine anything out of place, but it turned out the extractor rod had worked loose and backed out a little. I screwed it back down tight, and it was easy to open again. Still gritty, but easy enough to open. Fiber optic rods fall out of expensive guns, and their sights, as well as aftermarket sights. It's good to keep a few to cut and replace. I actually mention in this first review that people shouldn't expect that fiber optic rod to stay in there forever. That's not an excuse for the gun. Just a reality. All in all it's a niche gun that I've grown to like enough to keep and shoot from time to time, as well as carry when it's the most convenient choice.

Two things to do to get the double action to loosen up quite a bit. Oil the cylinder wheel at the hub in and out. One drop of oil inside the frame where the cylinder locks in. Second thing to do is buy a set of snap caps load them up and do double action pulls at a target. This will help loosen the double action trigger and help strengthen your trigger finger. This is a great carry gun once the stiff double action is taken care of. Good Luck!!!

I’m very sorry but I have to disagree with you on the felt recoil. I find the poly protector to be very pleasant to shoot, even with .357 magnum loads. I will admit I don’t practice with .357 magnum that often. I don’t carry .357 magnum either. I carry .38 special +p+. I hand load my own rounds. I don’t find it to be a brute at all.

Well, actually I don't know if you're disagreeing with me or not. It is comfortable to shoot with .357 magnum with 110 gr. bullets. And no issues with .38 special +p. The misery comes from 158 grain factory loaded bullets. If you find that 'pleasant' you may need to get the nerves in your hand checked. But, whatever. Glad you like your gun.

158 grain .357 magnum is always a knuckle buster in a J frame type revolver. You need to shoot 110 grain Winchester white box hollow points which is a very accurate and fast round but not near as bad recoil. The heavier grain the rounds especially in a revolver the heavier the felt recoil...

I just can't get excited about a lump of plastic. I prefer my m605 shiny all stainless version.

It is metal frame with a polymer coating.. but I get where you are coming from with the stainless as you cannot beat the beauty. I use the 605P as a carry gun so if I get into a shooting- I will not mind leaving it with the police as evidence.

Would never fire any magnums in a revolver if it is not solid steel frame, barrel, and revolver and at least 3 inch barrel.

Then I guess you'll miss out on all the joy of shooting one of these.

That’s why I have a S&W 686. It was designed for 357 magnum.

This thing is a handfull I use the small grip too. Painfull after about ten rounds.
@MarkRogersCGO
@MarkRogersCGO 4 года назад
Using the larger grip will help with both control and pain. Especially if you're using full 158 gr. .357 ammo. Dropping down to 110 grain ammo smooths it out considerably. A drop in power, but still a serious self defense round. In any case, it takes some time shooting it to get used to it.

Very nice review! Yes, it sure seems to be a "little beastie"!!! Wish you would have shown more closeups of the gun though. If you are a genuine Christian, then you certainly KNOW what it means to be SAVED by faith in Jesus Christ, "solofide" (alone; remember Dr. Walter Martin?!!)! Remember our brother-in-Christ, Jeff Quinn (Gunblasts), who passed into eternity with Jesus, not long ago. Once you've seen him you'll never forget him!! There are other Christian gun reviewers out there too. Some will be obvious, some not. Some are just plain "nice guys"! Thanks for talking like the gentleman you seem to be! "Gesundheit"!!! I'm new to your channel too.

357 in a light plastic frame..... no thank you. I prefer a steel frame for 357.
@barryervin8536
@barryervin8536 5 месяцев назад
It's not a plastic frame. Underneath the plastic stuff is a steel frame like any other revolver. Plastic is used for stuff like the grip frame, trigger guard, ejector rod shroud, etc., wherever steel isn't needed and plastic can be used to save weight.

This video doesn't paint a very rosy picture of the gun's performance with full 158 grain .357 mag ammo. I did a second video, that I labeled "Round Two" done with 110 grain ammo. Since going to the 110 and 125 grain ammo, I've actually grown to like the gun and carry it from time to time.

I would probably shoot 2 boxes of. 357 then put it away in the safe and maybe take it out once a year. Though it's an apples to oranges situation, the Glock 19 is where I gravitate to.
