I can't confirm, but I think it was mentioned somewhere long after A New Generation had aired was that the main changes was due to some kind of animation studio licensing issue. The G5 team wasn't really allowed to use any G4 characters without the previous animation studio permission.
11:42 My theory is that maybe the rainbow factory was also just a weather factory. But in this version since the Pegasi still controlled the weather, I’m assuming the earth ponies didn’t want any Pegasi near their town so they had to make the weather themselves. I also don’t really like Pip being more of an antagonist character. It could’ve worked though if she was the more antagonist version of sprout where she ends up finding out she was wrong to stop them in the end just like what happened with sprout in the movie. Just some thoughts
I wish the style of G5 was more like the concept art. I would have like the rustic painted look better than the budget friendly animation we ended up getting.
I'm super disappointed by how many beautiful pieces of concept art and creativity got scrapped, it ends up really feeling really washed clean and sterile looking compared to all the different creative work.
How could you call the concept designs boring? 😧 they’re amazing and so beautiful also I prefer Sunny’s alicorn design in the concept art than her final none official alicorn design in the movie ❤
8:41.This old mare reminds me of the Swiss Gatekeeper from that James Bond movie "Goldfinger". I'd really like to see the unused ponies be recycled into major plot characters in the next Tell Your Tale special.
The animatic of the Zephyr heights escape scene wasn't "scrapped," as it was never meant to be part of the movie. IIRC' the original upload by its creator said ( paraphasing) that rather, It was a way for him to experiment with and demonstrate his ability to work with the show's components (setting, plot outline, etc…) as well as serve as a proof of concept of sorts.
This is really interesting, I love some of the initial ideas they had. Thanks for putting this vid together to showcase this stuff, It's Awesome to see what G5 could have been. You mentioned there was a screening of the first version, just curious if any of this stuff is still available online?
1. I really do like the concept designs for the Mane Five, and even for Sprout. Personally, I find Zipp's design to be a lot better than her final design, and the same goes for Izzy. The latter of which would have hinted at the more obvious connection with Vylette in the comics and Tell Your Tale, if we had gotten it. And while I can definitely agree that Sunny's original design would have been a lot more unique (and also a lot more moé), it doesn't exactly fit the character we got for her in the movie. In fact, I'd say it fits Izzy a lot more. Also, it reminds me a lot of Edward Wong from Cowboy Bebop. Speaking of lookalikes, I have to say that Sprout's final design works better in general. He looks a lot less gruff than his original design, yes, but that gruffness makes him a lot more predictably villainous, and doesn't work with how Phyliss and the citizens were ultimately what built him up, and not strictly his own ego. Plus, the final design is appealing to me because of its resemblance to Biff Tannen, which I appreciate mainly because of just how similar his situation is to Biff, and both that *and* why he actually became a villain is why I think Sprout works really well. 2. I would say that Izzy was a lot more exaggerated in her zaniness in Make Your Mark (and especially Tell Your Tale), but as grounded as Izzy was in the film in contrast to her later version (Which I love), don't forget that she was still rather zany. Remember how playful she was when she was introduced, and not taking her being perceived as an invader all that seriously? And also, when she knocked down a tree by drilling it with her horn. 3. The version we could have gotten of Danger, Danger isn't all too different from the final version. Only thing we really lost was another verse, and a fun additional chorus. However, you missed the cut version of Fit Right In, which is thankfully available on the film's soundtrack album...sort of. The extended version adds some more lyrics which make the song feel a bit more complete, mainly during Sunny's solo and the Izzy rap part, which had more lyrics to them. Also, while I feel that having Sprout don his dictator outfit in the original Danger, Danger doesn't work that well, I do like Hitch as a more traditional femboy as was in the Fit Right In animatic. 4. Lastly, I feel that most people don't get what was being gone for when it came to Pipp. Sure, Make Your Mark and Tell Your Tale would definitely have you believe that she was always a well-intentioned character... but she really wasn't. She did turn good by the time we got to the campfire scene, but before that, she was very much an antagonist. Not the violent kind that we could have gotten in the original script for the film, but still very much antagonistic through her excessive ego and pandering to her Pippsqueaks. People say that she was hollow, and yeah she didn't have the same kind of development that the other members did (Especially Sunny and Hitch), but I feel that hollowness was less of an oversight and more intentional to make her unlikeable. Same with Queen Haven.
I personally think the g5 will be MUCH better if the idea of the movie was LITERALLY the series. I mean the conflict of the races in a series like the FiM will be so cool

There is so much lost potential to G5 starting with the movie and continuous until today. It’s sad! But hopefully G6 will be better! It’s just a question of time.

The one thing I like about Zipp and Pip's old designs is that they actually look related. The ones they used are good but they don't look any more related than any two random ponies on the street and I don't really think it helps that Zipp doesn't really match their mom either the way Pip does. And the two completely different looking wing types just further throws me off
So apparently Discovery Family holds the tv rights to all of the characters, locations, and creatures from G4. And if G5's team wanted feature Twilight, Canterlot etc. Fees had to be paid to Discovery Family; which is why G5 and G4 seem to have such lackluster connections. Which makes a reboot sound like a much more sensible option. If your making a sequel that can't make any connections to the previous story, then that just defeats the whole purpose of a sequel.
I really disappointed in the villain. I like sprouts earlier designs, especially the one that was in color. I think if they had a likable villain, not only would it bring in a lot of people from the fandom, but the ending would’ve been better as well because sprout ended up having to apologize to them, main characters or whatever. I’m thinking of the factors of marketability.
I think G5 can have a sci-fi fantasy setting unlike the others. Imagine, at some point after looking at medieval fantasy elements, you will start seeing stuff like futuristic flying ships, robotic pets & ponies, laser weapons, computers and PDAs, otherworldly-looking flora and fauna, and of course, AIs. It would be a cool addition to this generation of ponies. Of course, magic and the mythical creatures will stay. If Final Fantasy can have some sci-fi elements to it, then MLP can too.

If the rainbow factory was added, little kids who got exposed to the creepypasta would either get re-traumatized or super excited (the horror fans) and scare their friends talking about it lol

I'm glad you mentioned these concepts as the things we didn't get to see instead of "what g5 could have been". I believe more screentime, speically in the series, can solve mostly all the complains people have. Having the g5 we got is a refresher, has some ties with g4 but it can stand out by itself.
It's actually really nice to see anyone talk about g5's concept stuff without harping on the mane 6 and how it shouldve just been g4 2 electric boogaloo. I feel like so often whenever people talk about "the g5 we never got" its ONLY the mane 6 concepts, never the new cast. It's over, move on.

Hi nice to meet you my answer is probably and probably no A lot of these ideas have been scrapped and probably they are never going to be used again but on the other hand we could still see them because we saw that in tell your tale season 2 they used a rainbow machine in one of the episodes which is really similar to the machine we saw in the concept art of the movie but hey we just need to wait and see
They should have rolled with the 2D sketch appearance and painted backgrounds for there movie too. I feel like 3D takes the emotion out of animated films these days as well as the uniqueness
There was too much cool stuff for me to point to ! But changes mean we wouldn't have got what we did. Then this video would have rejected sketches of ponies and places instead of them being in the movie, and we would look at those rejected sketches and wonder what could have been... Also, many of those sketches getting fleshed out would mean major changes to how the movie was written. Maybe this video will inspire a G5 Double Rainboom or Dusk's Dawn😍
I hate the poofy wings pip has they are just ugly as well as the alicorn stuff it feels rushed I wish they made better models and actually watched the show to get some ideas on what they could do like the concepts look good as 2d but this 3d is just bad
My issue with g5 was it's clinging to g4 way too much, but the writers are too lazy to come up with a decent storyline that doesn't contradict old lore. I'm sure we'll eventually see how g5 started the way it did (or at least I HOPE we do). The previous gens (not counting 3.5 or 4.5) both were their own story. It would be so nice to have a new gen with brand new characters with unique personalities and designs, and 3D models make it so much easier to have more detailed designs (Like that adorable spotted Izzy concept). It's just such a shame the team is too focused on marketing to kids that they aren't paying attention to fans. Even the toys are awful, and MLP has always been a big toy line with cute dolls!
