The time I almost died... (and talking about that mid-life crisis thing)

Thought I'd share this life experience with you all. Holy Crap. I'm not sure exactly how this looks on camera, but it was the first time I thought I might actually not come back to the surface. I was already out of breath when the cold water hit me, then I got sucked under this undercut wall. Not cool. It's hard to tell what was happening but I was fighting as hard as I could to get to the surface and even kicked off my shoe (which you see at the very end).
On a related note, I think I'm coming out of a midlife crisis. Also, I need some help. I need your feedback because I'm making a big change this month.
Here is the google form: forms.gle/KTaWkesPGjBWJq3G7
A huge thanks to all of you that are willing to fill that out. Will only take a few minutes but will help me tremendously! Much love to all of you! - Rob

Hey Rob, just want to thank you for making videos, teaching and inspiring me to keep learning and creating. Following you a couple of years now, and I'm very grateful for all the lessons, not only on filming but living as well. Hugs from Brazil!

You and Untamed Science are one of the reasons I started into science filmmaking. I have been for some years now following you guys and the videos you make, and I can only be thankful for what you are doing! I have learned a lot!!! Now more than ever, we need to show people how science is important in our lives. It seems to me that with the raise of "idiocracy" worldwide, people are losing faith in it and not seen it as so important anymore. That's why we NEED people like you! But, whatever pat you choose for your life from now, I sincerely hope you keep filming and advocating for science. Cheers!

A lot of other comments sum up what I wanted to say. So I'll point out something I thought right at the beginning of your video: That is a bad ass beard you're rocking. May we all be so fortunate to look as cool at 40. Your videos help us deal with a lot of similar issues. Whether it's depression or filming tips, you've accomplished so much that we're often inspired. I'll never forget seeing you on a Discovery Channel show about mysterious places on Earth and excitedly turning to my girlfriend to tell her "that's Rob Nelson! I've been watching his channel for years! He's awesome".

Oh wow, I have already been missing your videos. Going on a canoe tour in South Germany on the river Isar is one of my most beautiful memories. The nature observed and peacefulness around you is outstanding. But I haven't faced any situations where I felt like my life will end here. Over the past weeks I haven't been home and my thermal camera project has taken no progress, I reached out to a few more people and got a single reply at least. Now I am going to fill out the form to help you out.

I was acutely aware of this shift when I turned 40 two years ago. Now I have this constant push to do more adventurous stuff so I don’t regret not doing them when I am old and not physically able anymore 😏

I don't know if I could answer your questionnaire. I'm a relatively recent subscriber who stumbled over your stop motion basics videos and some of your other How to's. You explain things very well, but your stuff rarely shows up in my feed so I can't say much about them. On the subject of midlife crises, I suspect many people have those moments when they realize that there is more to life than what they are doing. I suspect the difference in cultures might lie more on how people view their importance to those in their immediate sphere of influence (friends, family, local community) and the typical western daily life being more devoid of that kind of impact. That very unscientific observation is based on the few mid-life crises I've observed where people simply wanted to make a difference, or wanted the things they did to matter, compared to my limited interactions with immigrants especially from the far east who had very close knit families and whose lives had profound impacts on those closest to them.

Wow, I’m so glad you’re okay! That must really change your perspective on things when you come that close to death. I’m 30, but my father passed away on August 1st and it has shaken me in many ways. I am grieving and emotionally exhausted, all while feeling pushed to get things going in my life - my opinion on how much time we have in life is completely changed. It’s like a mini life crisis. I quit my job and went all in on my own income sources. I want to experience more. It’s hard because this is mixed with feeling upset that my father never got to finish his creative projects and also I’m missing the hell out of him. Life is different now. I feel like a chapter just closed.

Sorry to hear that. I appreciate the thoughts and perspective on it. It's good to hear what you're going through too. I thought I'd share simply because I don't see many people (who seem to have it together) sharing what I think is a very real and common thing for so many. As far as I can tell anyhow...

Wow dude you got balls. I remember one of your old cartoon videos where you boat sank in Hawaii. You told the story in such a relate-able way that I still remember it and yet you still get in boats. Your always welcome to come cave in Kentucky if you need to hide from life's BS.

Midlife crisis are awesome. They are doors to the most amazing life changes. We mature, you know? And it becomes a must to reevaluate and go about things in a smarter, more effective and wiser way. Life actually gets better for those in continuous growth, like yourself. Keep it going handsome!!!

Hey Rob, Interesting video. Thoughtful. I really like that 🙂👍 And in my 50 year-old British body, living in Japan for the last 15+ years, I'd say that a "mid-life crisis" hits everyone: at different times, in different ways, and at varying intensities. The key is to approach it positively and to NOT fall into the cliché trap of chasing youth. 😊

I understand completely how it feels. I too am going through the same, at the same age and apparently my inclinations are in the same direction - photography and arts. Pretty sure we're pieces of a potential middle age social study. I like your RU-vid video format, their presentation and energy transmitted. Subscribed.
