The Hundredth Meridian crosses through Canada…but the concert was in Toronto. The Hip are uniquely Hip.

The Freddie Mercury song he was referencing was Bohemian Rhapsody: sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

Gordie throwing his 'signature' double-finger handgun into the audience, smoking imaginary 'joints' during songs, rowing imaginary canoes, arguing and fighting with microphones and microphone stands as though they were soulful sentient beings, shooting off imaginary shotguns into the crowd, laying down whilst singing on camera dolly train tracks, riding the mic stand like a Harley Davidson Chopper... he was the Picasso of Rock N Roll Performance Art. In comparison, he made Mick Jagger, look like a part-time Chippendale dancer.

These live reactions are great because they capture Gord at his essence. Not sure if that is the correct word or phrase but my point is the studio versions are SO MUCH different than their live songs. Live the band goes off in tangents and let Gord do his thing. Studio versions are much cleaner and also great. Not that I think you need to react to both but you should definitely give the studio versions a listen. Fully Completely is a great album front to back like many of their albums.

Wow - First like, first comment Rory - from Canada with love - keep it up mate! - all college chums just like the good old days of Floyd, Stones, Beatles etc......even fired their first rhythm guitar player and hired Paul Langois ( the short haired one) before he could even play - because they liked him... "don't worry, we'll teach you" - find some earlier stuff like "Evelyn" from the first L.P. and "Blow at High Dough" from the breakout 2nd one, "Up to Here" - 1988) This band was huge in Canada and barely noticed outside the country..... and Gord Downy was absolutely a mad genius.

I was waiting for your reaction on the Freddie Mercury drop. I was lucky enough to experience the hip in 1985. They played at a small township hall and there were about 40 or 50 fans. They played some early Rolling Stones and some Yardbirds from what I remember. And some original tracks as well. My son played on Rob Baker’s son Borris’ soccer team. The band were all gems. Made time to talk to appreciative fans.

Beat poet… perfect analogy. Bravo. You know how Rush was known for perfectly reproducing their studio tracks in concert? Well, the Hip were known for doing the opposite. Gord perfected free association rock ranting.

The Hip were active from about 84 -2017. Their prime was in the 90's with some amazing albums, this song was a 90's tune, it's funny you mentioned that the lead singer Gord Downie reminds you of a beat poet. He actually put out a poetry book called "Coke Machine Glow". Gord passed away in 2017 from a brain tumor.

You hit the poet thing right on the head Rory. Not sure if anyone mentioned this but Gord actually released a solo album of just his poetry in 2001. It was titled Coke Machine Glow.

That was awesome! The Hip are like Rush in a sense in that you can't put either band in a category. Both bands are unique and you are the first reactor that really gets them. Another Canadian band to check out is The Tea Party Sister Awake live at Much More Music Toronto They are another unique Canadian band. Love your reactions as always. ❤ Cheers

Except that we're highly divided on Rush (I can't abide them), but everyone loves The Hip.
@stevebenson506

Two of my favourite bands right there. And polar opposites when performing. Rush we’re perfectionists, there live performances were precise and amazing. The Hip’s live performances were raw and you never knew what to expect. Both VERY political and esoteric while still bringing people together instead of dividing them. Two amazing bands with terrific lyricists. Rush has better musicians (all three arguably the best in there disciplines) while the Hip just knew how to connect through emotion and performance.

I think everyone should listen to the studio version of these Hip songs first. Gord goes so wildly off course from the studio versions in concerts. After you have heard these songs a few times, the LIVE versions get so much more entertaining.

Gordie's lyrics are very poetic and they were big (to me ) in the 90's....I actually teared up after hearing this because Gordie was such an influence in my life at the tiime...It's such a tragedy he's gone..

You know how Rush defied musical categorization? Same thing with the Hip. Whereas Rush had a diehard, international following, the Hip built something equally special. For many, the band became synonymous with Canada. They were absolute legends in our country. By way of example, the very last concert of the Hip’s last tour was attended by the prime minister and broadcast live across the entire country by the CBC (radio, streaming, and TV). It was a sad but glorious night as the lead signer, Gord Downie, had been diagnosed with incurable brain cancer. The band nonetheless decided to put on a farewell tour, so that they could raise money and awareness for Canada’s indigenous peoples. The Hip has a deep catalog too, so there’s lots to enjoy. Just to confuse you about their musical genre, try listening to: - Poets - Ahead by a Century - Nautical Disaster - Wheat Kings
