In college my best friend and l were paid to model our hair at this black hair expo. This was in the early 90s. Neither one of us used perms or chemicals. She had type 2 hair and l had type 3 hair. We were both lightskin with long hair. My dad looked at the contracts before we signed them. But yes, this was quite prevalent back then. The Black man who recruited us did so at a spring job fair that was being held on our campus.

Wow! You’re so right. When I looked into it, a lot of the girls were scouted in one way or another. Many companies today only choose models based on the outcome promised through their product, not someone who actually uses it. ☕️👀

@@LaToyaEbonyHair …a great ad now is the Garnier Fructis “glass” hair. The tan skin girl used in this ad already has natural straight hair. Who knows what harmful chemicals are in this product and l guarantee you this model doesn’t use the product long term or ever. We, as women of color, and specifically Black women, have got to embrace what God gave us or we will all be bald headed or constantly fighting scalp issues. These companies play up some of our group’s tendencies to want the straight hair that is not in our natural DNA. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I got my first relaxer at 16, and stopped in my mid 20s. Now I'm 40 and I'm like whoa. They made a ton of money off us. Just from our emotions

Once again we have been bamboozled! I used to get relaxers when I was younger. I've been natural now over 10 years. Now that I have a daughter. I will make sure she knows she's beautiful as is. #NoChemicalsRequired

I’m 18 . I wanted my hair to look like theirs when my mom relaxed it. It barely ever did. Even when my hair was relaxed it was still coarse and poofy
@confessionsofajadedoptimist
I am glad we have moved pasted relaxers. At least I did. I never begged may mom for a relaxer but I did beg her to be one of Jerry's kids lol. I think the relaxers came years after my jerry phase lol.

I don’t know how to feel. I guess they should only use kid models who actually used the relaxer. But really I think kiddie perms should be discontinued - it’s the exact same things as an adult relaxer with kids faces on the box. I guess that makes the parents and kids who use it feel good but it’s all false advertising
@johnarhodes3748
@johnarhodes3748 Год назад
Nothing in advertising surprises me. Think if all the naturally fit people selling weight loss products. It’s all marketing. I also think of celebrities and influencers that try to sell products that they really don’t use. We just need to be more aware as consumers.
@LaToyaEbonyHair
@LaToyaEbonyHair Год назад
I agree! At some point it’s a risk the consumer has to weigh. Even IF they were using the products it doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous or will work for everyone who buys. Awareness is crucial.
@Chromagens

Honestly I do not believe that these companies using sketchy or manipulative marketing necessarily means that they know it's dangerous to put on their models. Box dye companies digitally alter the hair colour seen on the box models, shampoo commercials have models with blowouts and extensions. It's more about the "right" look and less like cartoon evil scheming. Of course we can talk about how that negatively impacts the target audience, particularly the younger ones. I don't think any child should have chemical straighteners in their hair.
@LaToyaEbonyHair
@LaToyaEbonyHair Год назад
Perhaps. But they know now and the boxes still have little kids on them. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I feel the compliments part. We have all been there. But now I'm glad we know best. If you are thinking of relaxing or texturizing your hair please don't. Relaxers weaken our hair and give lots of health issues. Moreover relaxers, kiddie relaxers, texturizers etc. all carry dangerous chemicals not safe for our skin especially our scalp no matter how juicy the Advert is. As for compliments your natural hair will receive compliments if you CARE FOR IT AND OWN IT. You get energy you give off. No one can do that for you.

This is shocking! I got my first relaxer at 14 with an adult relaxer that burned the demons out of me! Every time I did this I got chemical burns until in my 40s I finally came to my senses and quit cold turkey! No more relaxing since three years now! Never mind the damage over the years has been terrible on my scalp but Praise the Lord I still got my hair! It’s been growing and I now worship its beauty! ❤

I knew about this years ago. My best friend was a perm box girl and perm never touched her head. She just naturally has a looser curl pattern. I assumed that was the case for all of them, and the truth came out.

I don’t understand why people are so upset. It was marketing and advertising. Those girls were just modeling, doing their job. They still are marketing and advertising the same way with makeup, hair, etc… It’s all acting, it’s not reality. I really don’t get the outrage.

I used to be natural from 2005-2012. I had super long hair. Then I got a job in a really hot and humid country and I knew I had to relax my hair so that it wont poof in the humidity. I used the Dark and Lovely Beautiful Beginnings for girls, I was 26 at the time. My hair thinned so much and it became super flat 😢. But I just accepted it bcoz I didn’t have a choice. Fast forward to 2016, I started wearing wigs and transitioning back to natural. That relaxer used to burn my scalp so much yet I’m an adult who has 4b, 4c hair. How they market such a strong relaxer for little girls just boggles my mind. I never used to be tender headed before I started using that relaxer. Now I’m so tender headed after going back to natural. I blame that relaxer for messing my scalp up 😡

All this was after my time, I just had adult relaxers as a kid. In my house, the women had straight hair; I don't think my parents ever got over me going natural! People were just so used to getting relaxers; the companies looked for ways to make their products stand out to a new generation - and it worked. The dishonesty doesn't surprise me.

I blame the brands but feel like the girls or families should have something sooner. They've been adults for a while now and they clearly aren't bound by contract to not say anything. If people had known as the NHM was taking off, what could we have done?

6:27 When I was 5 years old, my mom had a relaxer put on my hair. I went out of town for a couple of days, my daughter stayed at her dads, his girlfriend put a curl perm on her hair. I noticed that the new growth was more kinkier than it was before. I wonder what my hair was like before my mom had the relaxer put on my hair.
