Perhaps people need to remember that it isn't a d**k measuring contest, its about actually getting out and using the units for what they were intended. If it functions, and provides capability that you didn't previously have then its a huge win, leave it at that.

That's good to know. I've flown with L3 units and recently had the opportunity to look through their "super gain" tubes and thought I'd never be satisfied with any of the lesser priced options from other manufacturers if I had to spend my own $$$.

Same, I got a 2407 FOM 4G echo. It has 5-6 extremely small faults in the a/b zones so I got a killer price too. Even with faults, you have to spend time to find them against a wall and when in real conditions you never see them. I posted the specs and test image around the webs and people still said I overpaid for Gen2 night vision and that in complete blackout Harris and elbit guys would smoke me. Lol

I'm glad to see night vision becoming not only better, but more affordable too. This superpower isn't for the rich, the elite, or special forces anymore. Now if only laser modules could keep up :P

Photonis tubes are going to start suffering under extreme low light conditions before elbits and L3s will. Its a fine tube for flat range shooting, but theres a reason why L3 tubes exist.

This is simply not correct and only illustrates points that the video is making. You have an open invitation to our calibrated dark room at Photonis Defense in Lancaster, PA. There you will be able to run whatever L3 tube/NOD combination you wish and we can demonstrate to you that you'll still be able to see with your Photonis NODS at levels where you cannot see your hand in front of your face. There is a reason why Photonis sells more image intensifier tubes world-wide than L3 and Elbit combined, and the reason is that they work extremely well in ALL light conditions.

You need to stop listening to reddit and facebook. I run 2600 FOM Photonis units and bring them to Night vision shoots monthly with 30-40 guys showing up each month. We literally compared a high spec 2700 fom L3 WP tube to my Photonis tubes in no moon cloud cover way out in the country (Glencoe MN shady lane range) and the difference on details an contrast of the environment and targets were not noticeable at all from 0-100 yards out. We compared to the targets at 200 yards and the L3's just barely edge out on detail at those ranges. Quite literally people see my tubes and are blown away.

My photonis went out during a night vision class. Photonis then accused me of mounting it on a gun so they wouldn’t honor the repair. Luckily NVD who sold the unit was there and my instructor who saw me with the unit and trained me with the unit knows in all my night vision classes I took I never mounted the device on a weapon. Their headquarters is in France they still said no. Luckily night vision devices did the repair for me but I did purchase another pvs-14 with a elbeit tube. Based on what? Because Photonis cannot be classed as Gen 2 OR Gen 3. The construction of the tube falls outside of the militaries classification of generations. It isn't Gen 2 OR Gen 3. Just curious...did you ever actually compare your device with someone with an Elbit thin filmed or L3 Filmless device? Because to me it was absolutely night and day when i went to a course a few months ago. The next day I bought an L3 tube to swap out my photonis. I know where hes going with "L3 just falls short in some places" I really do. I noticed those short falls pretty fast. They will blem alot easier. They ARE prone to burns much faster. You should defintely consider an IRIS as light increases in your enviornment so less light is hitting that microchannel plate. But my goddddd low light performance was just intense. Im not even talking about indoors with little to no ambient light...im talking outdoors. All tubes are going to struggle indoors with no ambient light and youll need IR for all of them...but outdoors with my L3 tube felt like the sun just came back on compared to my photonis tube. As far as the short falls with a Gen3 tube with blems and burns being easier to get...what i have noticed and ive asked around in forums and FB groups if others experience the same is - it seems to happen only the first few minutes a device is first turned on. After about 2-3 minutes, it doesnt happen. If a really bright light streaks across your tube - yea you get a very small streak but it disappears in seconds. Theyre more prone to damage 100%, i wont deny that. If you learn to just use it properly youll never have a problem. Im not saying right away go and change out your tube to something better. Youre NOT "under powered", there just "different". If a photonis tube is meeting your needs? No need to change it out. It just wasnt meeting mine

I've seen some garbage gen-3 tubes, I've seen some garbage echos... I've also seen dudes spend years nerding out useless details and never get NODs at all, never get thermals, and just waste all their money on another redundant meh AR build with a fugazi optic or a gucci pistol they can't shoot. If more dudes got a chance to test out decent "middle of the road tubes" there'd be a lot less obsessing over minutia. Shopping for nods is hard because most people can't really check them out in person, out in the wild and really see what different devices are capable of.

You always get these types. Gear snobs. I have crazy equipment like Scars, Spears, etc... I have quads with L3 Harris tubes (not GPNVG). I paid $13,500 for the tubes alone. But that doesn't make the tubes the best. The tubes are all around mid to high 2400 FOM and +35 SNR. When I drive with them on, they are WAY too sensitive to oncoming lights. I have to drive on backroads that are less populated than scenes in post apocalyptic movies. I tried to drive to work one night with them on using all backroads. I gave up after about 30 minutes because I had to keep flipping them up and down with one hand. Imagine going around a corner and being hit with high beams with nvgs on. They get temporary burn ins almost INSTANTLY to even small illumination; tv screens, phone screens, light posts, etc... My unit has no manual gain either so... There is nothing wrong with photonis tubes if they have good specs. A few months ago I had to tell some guys at a range to buy what they could afford. I just took things to an extreme because I love this stuff and will make crazy sacrifices to get it. The gear shaming stuff is crazy. I didn't know Photonis was in Lancaster. I’ve looked through all nnvt4 tubes echos elbit and L3 the echos looked the worse outa all them besides the nnvts. The L3 ovi looked better then all them . I am considering photonis for my next set of tubes, currently running an elbit. I think you are wrong however in saying L3 isnt the best, I can easily identify the tubes just by the color of the phosphor (L3, Elbit, Photonis). NVG is not a linear curve when it comes to price and performance. Yes you can easily get into some photonis or even cheaper tubes like the new chinese NVT but they are not "better" than elbit or L3. Some people really want the best and are willing to pay for it, nothing wrong with that. It's like why people can pay for sig romeo for $100 or buy a T2 for $800. They essentially do the same thing but there is slightly more capability and combat proven with the T2. That is worth something. It's on the end user to decide what that is worth, but its ridiculous to say the T2 or L3/Elbit tubes aren't better. Again I am considering photonis for my next set of tubes because for my use case I don't need to see in near black out conditions. I can just use an active illuminator to supplement. However if it were my job then I would only pick L3 or Elbit for those slightly better low light performance. But most of us aren't tier 1 operators so yeah the photonis would probably be okay for 95% of civilians. Just my 2 cents. Great work and discussion though.

On the other hand, I see videos of people with filmless gen3, who run around in urban environments. And I think, that can't be good for the tubes lifetime either. I remember that one guy, who did a unboxing and first use video in his well lit neighbourhood. He managed to get permanent burns on his L3 filmless binos. They where still there in following videos.

Agree with 99.9% of what's stated on this video. Having used devices with all kinds of tubes (Photonis, Elbit, L3, Harder Digital, even NNVT), I'd say it all comes down to which environment are the tubes going to be used in and what kind of scenario we're talking about. Personally, since I use my NVs in wooded areas in Scandinavia, I prefer having Gen 3 tubes in my devices, just because the amount of nights with darkness levels at NL4 or NL5 is so frequent, that a tube like Photonis leaves a bit to be desired in the forest. If you have a mixed light scenario, Photonis tubes are the best, hands down. Very informative video, keep up the good work!

Ok, I don't know jack sh!t about tubes- I'm new to this obviously. And I'll admit, at first, I was thinking maybe I'm in the wrong place... not because I thought you were talking about male enhancement or hair regrowth products for the first few minutes, moreso because I can't sprint 50 yards anymore LOL, but I am 51 with lower spinal damage. So since I've been around a while, I've figured out that MY opinion isn't nearly as relevant as I dreamed it was 20 years ago, so I just chilled out and listened to this guy, who is obviously EXTREMELY passionate about his product line and how things related directly to it are perceived. It was refreshing to see that, definitely will be looking into Arkayne's optics, thermal and/or IR products

Seems like I heard that NODs could be built with Photonis tubes that aren't subject to ITAR. If that's true that looks like it could be a major advantage for Photonis. How about cold temperature performance differences? I can't find any data from either L3 or Photonis about minimum operating temperatures on their current spec sheets, but some older Photonis specs suggested that the tubes would only operate above -20 C. Quite a number of electronic systems won't work at those temperatures, but still the DOD often requires performance down to -40 C when it's achievable.

That being said the 2600 FOM Vypers you guys sold me absolutely crush my Gen 3 Omni 7 tubes. Facts. Especially in low light. Thanks for being the voice of reason. My favorite thing when I was on the fence was Ethan telllng me if they didn’t do the job and they remained in new condition y’all would swap for Elbit. No need. I put on a set of Elbits swapping with my buddy’s and the vypers destroyed them in low light even. (2200 FOM elbits).
@aesthetic8780
@aesthetic8780 8 месяцев назад
Of course. Elbit is extremely trash with their filmed tubes. This film blocks 25% - 50% of the photons. That's the reason why filmed Gen3 tubes are so damn noisy. Because you can do the math and calculate 30 SNR -25%. Surprise surprise, 30 SNR doesn't look nice if your tube is filmed. Have fun with your Filmless photonis tube!
@PhotonisDefenseInc.
@PhotonisDefenseInc. 7 месяцев назад
The ion barrier ("filmed") in all tubes using GaAs (even those that state they are unfilmed) are there to more efficiently use electrons converted from Photons. It was invented to increase tube effeciency/effectiveness and reduce wear on the cathode thus extending the life of the tube. The film is one of the things that defines Generation 3 and was placed there to bring the tube life up to 10,000 hours. However, as the video correctly states the Generation term is no longer used. Photonis tubes do not use GaAs coatings, thus do not need any type of ion barrier. @@aesthetic8780

No, all Photonis tubes meet MILSPEC of 10,000 hours and if you were to run your Photonis tubes for 10,000 hours you would also discover that they have less degradation at that point than a comparable GaAs tube.

@@PhotonisDefenseInc.where can we see your data on the degradation curve of your current HyMa tubes compared to GaAs from Elbit and L3?
@PhotonisDefenseNightVision
@PhotonisDefenseNightVision 3 месяца назад
Basically you won’t see that. We will point out that thin film tubes or filled tubes were developed to prevent premature degradation of GaAs tubes. Photonis doesn’t use GaAs, therefore our tubes are truly filmless. Any GaAs tube, even those listed as filmless, will have some type of film. All MILSPEC tubes will last 10,000 hours which for most civilian users means they’ll practically last a lifetime unless you use your NODS a lot. Our newest tubes last 20,000 hours.

Idk about only 100 yards but generally clip on thermals that interface with i2 are fairly low res sensors. Like the kind of sensor that would come in a sub $1000 monocular, but since they’re a clip on they become much more expensive. So yes they aren’t the best thermals, but they still give i2 a great boost in detection capability.

Yeah I could tell immediately which one was photonis. Even on a phone screen. And even with only 2 seconds to guess. It was the *dimmer* one Photonis tubes are great. They’re honestly slept on. Slept on hard. But they *are* different. And one of those differences is less light amplification and less gain. You’re coping saying photonis is better than elbit and L3. Coping even harder putting L3 below elbit lol. There’s a reason you’re the only person saying this. And it’s cause it’s dumb. But again, photonis is fantastic. I’ve been debating getting one to bridge with my L3. They’d easily be good enough to literally hang with an L3 tube in most conditions. But they aren’t the same.

@revvyishonisd5027
@revvyishonisd5027 8 месяцев назад
@@musicman1eanda yeah this rant is smoked. I get it, photonis is good. It’s great. Especially if you are in the city or a suburban environment. If your in a PD using it for patrol around headlights and street lamps, and you need to buy a lot of them for multiple people. It’s probably definitely the way to go. If it’s the only thing you can afford it’s definitely the way to go. And shit even with elbits recent price hikes it may just straight up be a smarter choice than elbit, even if you can afford elbit. But most of us aren’t that. Most of us who can save enough for photonis can also save enough for elbit or L3. Most of us take our shit out to the deep woods and desert where we can hike and shoot with our buddies. Where there’s no ambient light. And in that scenario it’s really nice to have a tube that can resolve the best image with minimal light, and that’s elbit and definitely L3. I’ve been in situations where I wished my L3 was *more* powerful than it is. And it’s the most powerful lol. And it’s really not that expensive. You can get super solid L3 unfilmed tubes for *under* $3000 if you know where to look and are willing to get on a waiting list. You can also get solid Omni contract pvs14’s for under $2k used if you know where to look. With deals like this I’m sorry but photonis just doesn’t make sense. Unless you are determined to buy new and are also determined to get bino’s rather than a mono, and do it for like 6k or less. Which hey I would also spring for photonis if those were my qualifiers. But they aren’t for basically anyone. I’m sorry I’m not trying to bash photonis at all, they really are fantastic. They’re absolutely good enough and in some situations they are the best. But the differences are minor and you can often get higher performance NV for similar or less money than photonis.

@destroyerofgear

@@destroyerofgear That's the reason why it's so damn specific. It's individual. In some cases you need this 5% in ultra low light. Instantly blemished because of the flimsy film in it. My Photonis tube doesn't even get blemished in full daylight. Holding it out of the window for 1 minute. I also mount it on my rifle for relaxed static night shooting. Not possible with gen3. And now we even have Filmless 4G+ with 87.000 GAIN. I wouldn't even run it on 60k gain, obviously. But okay buddy. Live in your fantasy world called past. Now it's the future and we need more than low light capabilities. All our SF dudes asking for 4G tubes. Do you think they are d0mb?
