I'm late to this party but I've been binge watching your "skinny on" series and I love that you explain WHY these certain ingredients are bad. If you're into health even a little bit you know trans fats etc. are bad but no one ever explains why. And you also explain why manufacturers are putting them in there. I've just never gotten all the information in one place and it is SO appreciated!!
Lauren Yerdon I am searching for maternity diets for my brother and sis in law... I like this! Very helpful info. You're right, NO ONE, not even doctors explain these things... I guess cause they would have no patients!
Seems like the majority of food nowadays are bad for you. It's scary, you don't know what to eat anymore!!!! They should never be allowed to put this garbage on the shelves, but they do, and the unfortunate thing is they get away with it.
Starting this video, I knew I was in for an agonizing introduction, so I scanned the comments. You have done me great service by pointing out the time the info begins and the bullshit ends. I salute you!
Thank you sooooo much! Finally! a RU-vidr who actually can break down and instruct the little pieces of nutritional dieting and who knows their stuff too. By the way, you have a new subscriber. :) I appreciate you providing info on health and nutrition. It's so hard to understand nutrition these days. There are so many misconceptions and loss information. I am so glad I discovered you on RU-vid. Also, you remind me of, Lauren Conrad. Very educated and a great instructor. You look like her also.
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing!! There really is SO much misinformation out there these days, it's no wonder people get so confused and frustrated! I promise to always give the real-deal info and break it all down as best as I can! 😊
I am from UK and I never touch anythjng with hydrogenated fat. But problem is manufacturers here are replacing it with Palm oil. I really wish our government would sort this out as palm oil is in bread, chocolate etc. It is terrible. I only use Meridian 100% Cashew butter or Peanut butter but other foods are just loaded with palm oil. Great video. xx
Smucker's natural peanut butter is peanuts and 1% or less of salt.. I will definitely be checking out the other peanut butter ingredients list now....... great video 💜💚💟💛💙
Good info, but I disagree with you on the palm oil, Becca. Saturated fat has been shown over and over again in recent studies (2017) not to be the culprit leading to atherosclerosis and heart disease we once thought it was. Carbohydrates and low nutrient density foods are the main culprits. We were all taught the evils of sat fat in dietetics school, but that science is changing. I 100% agree on the hydrogenated oils. They are supposed to be taken out of our food supply this year. Peanuts, because of the lectins and the aflatoxins are problematic all around. I only buy organic or stick to almond and cashew butter. Thanks for a good video!
I looked on MaraNatha's (the almond butter you had) website, and they say that the palm oil they use has zero trans fats, has less saturated fat than butter, and is cholesterol free. Whether or not you think they are bad or not you have to admit this option of nut butter is waaayyyy better than the conventional Jif or or Skippy, especially for people who are trying to (slowly) transition to a healthier diet. They also have oil and sugar/salt free options as well.
0:00 BASICALLY I am about to talk about health and food science and our bodies/digestive system, all of which I am unqualified to talk about because I have spent my life talking about makeup and clothes
Just binge watching your videos and I love how in your newer videos you insert a clip of the information it makes a huge difference wen your reading them it also helps out I've learned so much already !
The good news is that "regular" peanut butters don't contain trans fat anymore, Skippy's Hydrogentated Oil nowadays is Fully Hydrogentated, which is essentially saturated fat, artificial trans fats come from Partially Hydrogentated Oil.
You should make a video about pasta sauce, that stuff is so ridiculously sugary most of the time. I didn't realize it until I started to pay attention to the ingredients. Possibly condiments too just because I think it would be good to know which are semi healthy.
That's a great idea! It's so true, a lot of the jar sauces have a ton of added sugar it's crazy!! And I love the condiment idea! Thanks for watching and for our feedback!
They have basically the same nutritional profile, which is what I meant. Regardless what the source is, they serve the same purpose/provide similar macronutrients.
Absolutely great info. Really hope people watching this take in what you just spoke about and read the ingredients on all food products not just peanuts butter. People should learn what’s good and what’s bad in ingredients on food labels. Apart from what you just spoke about, I also look out for numbers in ingredients which is very deceitful. Thanks so much for sharing.
So grateful that I just stumbled upon this video. Throwing out my Jif natural tonight and getting new peanut butter tomorrow! PS. best nutrition videos I have seen on RU-vid!!
+Dan Johnson So true! I need to get a better blender/food processor..I've always wanted to try making my own but I'm afraid what I have now would blow up if I tried hahaha
Thank You ...I eat a lot of peanut butter because I am vegetarian. I eat it for protein.. This was very informative and it lead me to a question...I read a book years ago that was making the case for "whole, unprocessed foods." The author wrote that many saturated fats such as palm kernel oil, natural butter and coconut oil used to be blamed as contributing to heart disease and obesity. She explained that they were not processed fats and it was processed fat that the body cannot handle.( I learned in my nutrition class what margerine looks like before they add the "Yellow" coloring to make it resemble butter, it is a grey disgusting glob of grossness) The body does not know what to do with any of these processed things such as marjorine, so it gets stored as fat. She made a good point because she asked the reader to think about how much heart disease and obesity we have in the U.S in comparison to tropical island countries where the inhabitants eat palm oils and coconut oils on a regular basis. She then went on to really make a good case against trans fat and other processed substances. I wish I could remember the book and the authors name. Anyway,my question is, since I do not live near a health food store and have limited money, wouldn't Jiff be a safer brand for me to eat? At least palm oil is a "real" substance that is found in nature. Hydrogenated oils are not! Thank You for your information on this subject..
I can not stand when people say how small two tablespoons is. Like, have people not looked at a tablespoon? Quit thinking about teaspoons, the spoons you eat with are not tablespoons. Two tablespoons of peanut butter is the size of a golf ball. Get a Justin single serve thing of almond butter. It is two tablespoons and it is a TON. And I love this channel and I'm a nutrition major so I'm not someone who is just like sitting here complaining with no experience acting like I know it all, but having a degree evidently doesn't mean you know measurements...
I've been eating "Adam's Old Fashion peanut butter" for years and years. I love it. When you get it home, set it upside down for a day or two which makes it easier to stir. I try to find the furthest out date, currently 7 dec. When it is fresh, it only takes one or two swipes with your knife to get mixed up. It's made by the Smuckers co..
Thank you!!! This has informed me so well. That I now buy peanut butter were I literally can press the machine to grind the peanuts or almonds. And I know what I am eating. Taste way more delicious than jiff which I was eating before. Im so amazed how we eat our own death in products like this.....
This is great. I liked the last pack where you say "Back on the shelf, back away. You don't want any part of that." I love the passion to make us healthy. Although, now I'm afraid to check my almond butter. Ack! Well, here I go.
Hi Becca, almond butter is like 3x more expensive than peanut butter, and one reason people eat peanut butter is it's low cost option for protein. One disadvantage of using only peanuts peanut butter is that stirring it is difficult and time consuming once it naturally settles, you can periodically flip and jars you're storing to reduce the mixing effort required. Finally, you mentioned people perceive 2tbs servings as too little and are likely to eat a lot more than that, is that true? 2 tbs is quite a lot considering the fat content.
Trouble is, you don't explain how your favorite nut butter gets to be so runny if it comes from dry, natural almonds. What additive wets it up like that?
I've been researching peanut butter and found this video! I've been loving Teddie peanut butter. The ingredients are just dry roasted peanuts and some types have salt added. I've eaten Jif or Skippy my whole life and liked it but when I started eating healthier I really started reading ingredient labels and noticed that sugar was the second listed and there is so many grams per serving it disgusted me. I looked it up and found Teddie and it's seriously so good. I like it better than the other brands I've had. I was using the one that has salt added into it but decided to get the unsalted version and it's still so good. Natures promise is also a Stop and Shop store brand so I'm happy to hear there's one that also just has the nuts. Thank you for this video! I like the packets Justin's sells to bring on the go and their peanut butter cups so it's so sad to learn how bad it is and I'll definitely be backing away from their products (except their chocolate hazelnut butter it's better taste and better for me than Nutella and fixes that crazing)
How do you feel about the high fat of the ketogetic diets, are they correct about eating coconut oil, butter and meat fat? I started this diet this week and so many people say this is the way to go. Please give me your educated advice, as I don't want to destroy my heart with all this fat. It is a low carb, high fat, moderate protein diet, please advise me. I am fat and have high blood pressure. Thank you so so so much, Jo Ann
Well, too late for me. I already have 3 brand new jars of Skippy in my kitchen just waiting for me and I am not going to throw them out. I use a spoonful everyday to make a protein shake after working out. It helps keep me feeling fuller longer and therefore I've been eating less and losing weight. When I'm done with those I'll consider looking for the super organic type. She forgot to talk about how that peanut butter tastes though. Most people who are health nuts usually say "It tastes delicious" but then when a regular person tastes it it tastes like crap. So I want to know, does the super healthy one taste good or not?
Kay2be2mr A lot of times the "less healthy" versions have a lot of added sugar, so they taste really sweet. The more "clean" nut butters usually do not have any added sugar. If you like your peanut butter vey sweet, you may not like those without added sugar, but you would probably get used to the different taste over time! If you like the skippy brand/sweetened peanut butter you can try the Skippy "natural" - it still has sugar added, but has palm oil instead of hydrogenated oils, which is the lesser of the two "evils." Hope this helps!
I used to love the crappy PB for the sweetness. Now that I eat clean, whenever I try something sugary I don't even like it anymore. Eat whole foods, and you will like them as your addiction to sugar fades.
Becca Kay Just started on my 3rd and last Skippy jar today so I just bought the Kirkland signature 2 pack PB at Costco today. With only 2 ingredients (nuts and sea salt) and it's runny just like the one you demonstrated in the video. Not looking forward to it but oh well. Gotta eliminate sugar where ever I can.
Full hydrogegenation does not result in trans fats. Only *partial* hydrogenation does. Trans fats are what you get in between the conversion from unsaturated to saturated fatty acids. If the hydrogenation is complete (as it typically is for peanut butter), there aren't any trans fatty acids left.
Is kirkland organic peanut butter good? It says its made from valencia peanuts and the ingredients are dry roasted peanuts and sea salt. It doesnt say about any oils.
If food comes in a box, jar, can and sometimes a bag, most of it is probably bad for you. Cook from scratch as much as you can. Thank you Becca for your passion about nutrition. I am a Family Practice doctor and have learned much about nutrition by going back and studying biochemistry and basic physiology. Best of wishes to you.
Couldn't agree more! The more you can limit processed foods, the better of you will feel & also the better off your health will be. Thanks so much for watching, Dr. Coutts! I have many other nutrition videos (this one is pretty old) that you may be interested in checking out as well! Have a great day!
I'm just getting into healthly and clean eating, and I can't thank you enough for your videos. I've hit the subscribe button, and working my way thought them. I'm learning a lot, and I truly appreciate it. :O)
This is so helpful! Why don't they teach this stuff in school? It makes me nervous to think about what things I've allowed my kids to eat or that I've fed my husband and myself.
Great knowledge Becca! Very simply explained, you’ll be an excellent educator! The peanut butter I have always used has just dark roasted peanuts and minimal salt and is so good! I stir it once and then put it upside down in the pantry so that it’s runny enough to just drizzle onto toast etc... I good tip I learned from a popular vegan RU-vidr 👌😋
Palm oils ARE good for you, Coconut oil is a palm oil, hello... everyone knows that coconut oil IS GOOD for you because although it is high in sat. fats, it is easily and quickly burned in the liver because it is a medium chain fat.
Julie Johnson yes if I could afford it I would buy coconut oil for a hair conditioner face cream and butter and to mix and everything I could find. but I can't afford it so I use it for peanut butter and making homemade butter with lecithin
+CL Yin Personally I prefer the real thing, but peanut flour is a great option if you are someone who is looking to cut calories but would still would like to enjoy the taste of peanut butter.
Thanks for the info! Making me reconsider my love for Justin's almond butter! I'm curious though, since you seem to be so interested in nutrition and healthy eating, what's your opinion on eating meat? There are lots of studies out there that say that eating meats lead to the same types of heart disease that you explain palm oil and hydrogenated oil cause. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!
Haha I feel you girl Justin's is so good..I still eat it here and there too. And that's a great question! I personally do it eat meat, but I don't eat a ton and when I do it's usually always lean meats (like chicken or turkey breast). I firmly believe in eating a balanced diet with lots and lots of fruits & veggies, and then everything else in moderation! Hope this helps xx
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm not a vegan, and I like to promote diet balance, so I don't know if I would do a whole video on it. However, I love the idea of doing a 'skinny' on the meat replacement items...some of them are SO processed!
ya that is why i am going to grow my own almonds and make my own almond butter but i have to wait until i have the money because i am going to buy me a wondermill best thing about this is it will do everything
Thanks for the video, it was SO helpful. I've been eating that Mara almond butter... no more! Could you please make a video talking about what you think about a vegan diet? Btw you have a new subscriber!
Here, because the last 3 days were sick to my stomach and the only thing changed 1 tbs penut butter to my healthy smoothy, I wanted more protein....now looking the labels... garbage!!! I only cook with lard....and never had issue...should read label before buying.
I watched this while eating a skippy sandwich I won't do that again.I believe that Nature's Promise is sold at my local Stop n Shop.I will buy a bottle of this as ASAP never again with Skippy thank you for the video and educating me.
Thanks for the information I knew that hydrogenated vegetable oils and Palm oils are bad !! We just finished the last jar of jif natural peanut butter but from now on I will buy organic 100% peanut butter with out any oils add to it thanks for the tip
Well done! Finally someone on RU-vid with great knowledge of the hidden Trans Fats in the Peanut butter can show people the truth. Please tell me! What is your opinion on the Reduced Fat peanut butter. I'm talking about peanut butter with less than 5 grams of Saturated fat per 100 grams. They don't contain any hydrogenated fats but a little bit of palm oil. Thanks
Thanks so much for watching! I generally avoid all reduced fat products, mainly because they are always higher in added sugar but they will also have more additives, chemicals, stabilizers, etc so that they still taste like the full-fat original. Hope this helps!
I make peanut butter at home. Its easier than a lot of brainstorming about the ingredients and compromising one over another.I make my own peanut butter because I want just peanuts in it..not even the salt.
This is a quote from seriouseats.com. I personally like facts, just sayin. "However, according to a study by the USDA, no peanut butter, whether made with palm oil or hydrogenated vegetable oil contains any significant amount of trans-fats (from 0 to 0.0032 grams per 32-gram serving), so don't worry!"
I did a 24 hour fast and broke it by eating 180 calories of oatmeal with one table spoon of JIF Peanut Butter which is 100 calories and I literally feel bad for eating JIF peanut butter after seeing this video. From now on I will look for quality organic peanut butter or I’ll probably make my own. I failed but I’m learning each day. Thanks!
Its hard to believe people don't already know this, where've they been? But I like to make my own out of 100% organic peanuts. Then I add half and half Organic Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts. I buy them by the 5 lb bag so its cheaper, only about 62 bucks a bag online. I put the Hemp Hearts in everything, cookies, soups, oats, my own protein energy bars and even Hemp Hearts in my morning eggs, scrambled with fresh greens and ground sea veggies.
they were selling them at Cost co's for a short while a few months ago at a great price point about $13.a 28 oz bag, but they've since gone. So I buy it online from a nut company and pay 61. for 5lb bag of organic seeds. It's only 45. for the regular yellow bag. But I got into natural foods back in 1991 when I was diagnosed with cancer, "It's cancer, it's terminal". In fact several doctors told me there was nothing they could do for me, but still tried to get me to take chemo. They said it might give me six more months to live. But since I paid attention in life, I said no radiation and no chemo, I'd rather die like a man and not some invalid sick more days than not. It's quality of life and not quantity that matter to me. But I found myself reading a book called "Back to Eden" one day and on April 8 1991, I began my "Path of Most Resistance" Healing protocol. And what a long strange trip it's been.
