Gay & Muslim - What I Learnt To Come Out!

My first video! It's a heavy one! I sit down and share my personal experience growing up closeted in an Indian and Muslim family. I share what I learnt over time that helped me come out the closet. Coming out stories really inspired me and gave me the confidence to do it myself so here I am repaying the favour to everyone else in the same predicament!
It's my FIRST video so I'm sure I've done about every RU-vidr cliche in the book so forgive me as I navigate this space and find my ways. Sorry for the shoddy lighting change and any rookie editing mistakes, I filmed bits on different days and the weather changes so quickly in the UK. Also, take a shot for every time I say 'essentially'.

I relate to your story so much. I come from a Pakistani Muslim family. I’m binge watching coming out story’s right now lol even though I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to come out to my family as they are super religious and stuff but this video really resonates with me and my experience especially with school and coming from a south Asian background and my religion. Hey, I'm gay and Muslim, I live in a very religious and homophobic country, queer people are killed illegal, hush hush, so many relatable points from you story, the marriage one, I breaks my heart every day that I can't be able to fully express my self, I dont care what my family thinks about me not choosing to get married, I just feel to stressed that I was literally born onto this world with a fate of being loveless literally

Thanks for making this video. I'm in my mid-40s and I wish I had had a resource like RU-vid and videos like this when I was a teen to help me deal with many of the pressures and issues you describe in this video. You've done something very important for young lgbt youth who are similarly situated. Well done.

It's because u r not muslim, they r OK with it. If u were muslim and lesbian they would hate u, just ask them how they would treat their daughter or son if they turned out as homosexual. You know right in a few muslim countries, what the punishment for homosexuality is, according to shariah?

It took me alot of time to come out and still i have just came out to my friends and i still don't have any courage to say anything to my parents. Being an indian it is actually very tough to come out because there are your so called relatives and society who are ready to judge you.. Kudos to you it really feels amazing when someone shares there coming out story because it makes me feel that i m not the only one going through this. Loads of love to you #comingout #lgbtq

I remember my sister coming out and she told me she was l attracted to girls her age. She was 18. I was 25. Our parents r.i.p. My reply was, i want you to be happy in your life decissions and i am happy for what ever you choose to do. Our wider family adapted to lesbian, gay relationship over time. No problems. You are number one first. Be honest to yourself. You need to be happy just like my sister and i want you too. You will have friends that will love you and that is important. I have gay friends and i enjoy there company. My wife and i have no problems. So friend just be the person you want to be. Be happy.

I've been doing research for as long as i remember about exactly the same situation, Which is being gay and muslim. and i didn't get any legitimate answers about this subject. This is exactly my life, and i mean it by saying exactly. I've been fed so many lies and fake beliefs that when i realized that this is all bullshit, i was thinking about leaving Islam for good, it's so difficult to comprehend how hard it is to fight this dilemma between your religion and your passion for living as a gay man. We forget that religions do not thrive unless they reflect the values and biases of the culture in which they hope to grow. they require a 'marketable' set of ideas in order to compete with preexisting religions and secular philosophies among the demographic they want to convert. It becomes a cycle where the pervading culture helps form the boundaries of the faith as expressed by religious literature and oral traditions, and the religion builds its 'fence' of values and beliefs that re-enforces those same boundaries it helped to codify. My point is that no organized religion that is centuries old is solely responsible for what stays in the fence, and what stays outside. Historical, economic, ethnic and political forces did their own number on a culture that is mirrored in those texts, and their interpretation, whether they get formal credit or not. Religion may have been used to defend and justify homophobia. But it was exploited to that end, to serve convenient secular, social and political purposes over the centuries as it developed. We can't centuries later compartmentalize how much blame each element that makes up cultural and institutionalized homophobia deserves.

Hi Sam, I can relate, as a 53 years old Irish gay man and an only child from a traditional Irish Catholic background in Rural Republic of Ireland where being gay in Rural Catholic Ireland was definitely a taboo and where one was told very forcefully by the Catholic Priests and the Nuns to “cop yourself on” accompanied by a good hard “clip across the ear” in the Irish village where I grew up in the 1970’s & 1980’s, as there was a belief that being gay could be beaten out of someone, where the Irish Police at that time would drag some people into the police station and give them a good hard kicking to “cure” them of being gay as in “gay bashing” - in the early days, it was not easy, even though I’d lived in Dublin for 3 years, but I eventually moved to Manchester 21 years ago and the relationship with my family in Rural Ireland was much improved in that time - although born into Vatican II, I became a Traditional Catholic 18 years ago after I returned to my Catholic faith (after encouragement from a Pakistani Muslim friend to do so), as I am also an Irish patriot and I’ve not had any real problems in these circles, as I’m fully out as gay to everyone - you might know that being Catholic is intertwined with Irish identity, as Oscar Wilde was an Irish gay man, as well as Sir Roger Casement (who took part in the fight for Irish freedom in the Easter Rising of 1916) - I’ve worked alongside both Indian and Pakistani Muslim people after I moved to Manchester in 2002 (as I’ve been in supermarket retailing for 30 years) - but you are also a very handsome looking young man (I’m probably way too old for you though 😂) - I note that you recorded this video during Covid which was a very difficult period for all of us, as even though I’ve always held an Irish passport, I was unable to visit family in Ireland from Dec 2019 - August 2022 due to Irish Covid restrictions which lasted far longer than the U.K. restrictions 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪❤️
