And her 'child-like mentality' was probably more accurately a stunted emotional growth, not her actual mental abilities being limited. When you're in mental health crisis your capacity for analysis and critical thinking is really fucked up and could be compared to a child, even if you're doing complex equations to explain bizarre theories or something. So I don't believe he was completely wrong with it, but it still sounded like he was actively preying on someone too unstable or unwell to understand he wasn't a good choice. I have had a lot of older men show interest in me, and they usually presume I'm more childlike than I am, and it creeps me out that they seek that out actively, and they're usually incredibly emotionally stunted but in denial. She probably also had it drilled into her that if she showed any temper or distress, she might end up like her traumatised sister, and has learnt to hide parts of herself. Which might explain why she just switched off her feelings and smarts to help her mom knowing it's a crime. Still vile, but probably reflective of an abusive household all round...

So true!! There was a time when I had three life insurance policies on my head. Thank goodness no-one knew about them!! The odd thing is, even I didn't know. I thought I had one policy to cover my mortgage. The mortgage company made me take out a new one. I thought they were automatically cancelling the old one but I later found out they didn't, so I was paying for two policies for nearly a year without realising. Then I found out I actually also had life insurance through my job, which I didn't know about. I thank my lucky stars I didn't have a Janet in my life!

Imagine how long it takes to suffocate someone to DEATH.. for them to die, we are talking over 5 minutes. And not only are you fighting them through the struggle, until they go unconscious. You then have to HOLD it after they are out.. Crime of passion my butt. That is SO LONG to be in that situation, realize what you are doing, and have the opportunity to stop. It doesnt happen by an accidental moment of emotion. You gotta REALLY make it stick, to suffocate them with a pillow and your hands? PLENTY of time to be actively thinking, "I'm killing my daughter". And decide, yup, I'm ok with that. Especially once they go limp and you sit there holding it to make sure they die. Crimes of passion happen in an instant. Find your spouse in bed with someone, bash em in anger, they hit their head, etc. Not 10 minutes of holding your kids mouth closed until WELL after they are unconscious.

The vast majority of mothers do, but there are exceptions, especially with drugs, narcissism, or extremely low self esteem. I’m sorry you got a bad mother but I admire the fact that you took control of your life and got away from her.

@@junoatx I just feel like society has accepted the "dead beat dad" narrative a lot easier than they're willing to accept the fact that a lot of women don't have the "maternal instinct". So many babies left in dumpsters, murdered, abused, neglected, left in the path of boyfriends who are predators...the list goes on. And there's a subtle emotional abuse as well, I have many friends who make comments about having a distant relationship with their mothers. So not that their mothers were abusive per say, but just the lack of authentic love you know.

That safe space to turn to, that person that you can go to for anything. I always thought that once I was a "grown up" that I wouldn't be affected. My daughter has a personality disorder,and sometimes she is very argumentative,and is like a dog with a bone when she wants her way. I would NEVER dream of harming her in any way, shape or form! No good loving parent would ever hurt their child, I have tried to move Heaven and Earth to find her help because she is miserable even on medication

Seems likely that Shelly was trying to get away from her mother, but the psycho wouldn't let her go and decided that just killing her own daughter would fix the problem. Then convinced her other daughter, that had nothing to do with it, to help her dispose of the body... that's some fucked up shit right there.

On top of that the possible SA from the father… all on Shelly.. it makes sense. Why Shellys life went so differently than her sisters. Poor girl.

@@kalliope8238 that's sort of what I was thinking. Shelly was about 11 when her father died, and her sister would have only been about 4. It's (tragically) not necessarily the case, but maybe her sister was spared from suffering the same abuse that Shelly says she endured.

I think everyone has it wrong. I think the mother was covering for the daughter. If you listen to what she says when she calls her she's leading her the whole time letting her know what the story is gonna be cuz she's not gonna get to talk to her. And when confronted that she might be found out for murdering a loved one, one of them cries hysterically and runs out and the other sits there calmly wanting to know what the police "think" happened. If she seems like she doesn't have remorse it's cuz she doesn't. She didn't do anything. That's what I think can't believe no one else is saying that. Go back and listen to the phone call

Yet the chaotic burden wasn't the one who murdered someone, or helped anyone cover up a murder either. Seems like Shelley was the diamond in that messed up family.

I come from a family that is controlled by a narcissist mother. I have gone no contact with the lot of them, but I can verify that if you are the designated scapegoat, the family will put every single bit of blame on you for everything. They push and push and push and claim you’re unstable when you finally snap back, say you’re controlling when you set boundaries, and will claim that they have to walk on eggshells around you because you’re too sensitive (despite the reason you are sensitive being their constant criticism and blame). Everything is your fault and you will never do anything right. This kind of abuse isn’t always evident from the outside looking in, especially when there is a golden child to be compared to. I can guarantee that was the situation here, and malignant narcissists WILL be violent and even murderous when they perceive they are being challenged on any little thing. I witnessed and was on the receiving end of my own mother’s violent temper.

It amazes me how much americans know their 'rights' and technicalities when it comes to commiting a crime, and the disconnect from any sort of guilt or remorse in doing them. They honestly believe there's no other way than killing your own family?

A narcisitic mother

I almost got the feeling during the phone call to her with the police there, she was telling her the story she should go with "I'm telling them everything. They think you're an accessory after the fact. I'm sorry I got you involved with moving the body". The police would have realized, probably, if she was more involved than that, but it sounded like she was giving her an out from say, accomplice?

She was her golden child who her mother knew she could manipulate into hurting her own sister (a flying monkey)…I feel like she had more of a hand in murdering Shelly than just moving the body. And she was more distraught in her interviews than the mom was…Shelly was the family’s scapegoat so naturally all her siblings could’ve been turned against her by their narcissistic mother.

But I put distance between us because I need to. She tried to end me too many times. Mental illness aside, I will never accept that a young woman should have children right away. There r far too many hormonal changes to enjoy being newly married, or not, and not enough living a social life. Those years r special and even dating can ruin a positive trajectory. Many young mothers experience lack of self awareness and self love. Those r healthy and necessary. I know some young and well adjusted women, but not alot. Wait. Don't have a child just to have someone who loves u. Love yourself first.

I can see how a person that has been triggered would let it build to the next level. It's very easy. There is medication, and a classic BP trick, aka the Kanye, is to not take ur meds. To add alcohol or drugs. But mentally ill people that were raised on chaos don't have the tools to deal. Rage and physical violence is very common. I am borderline because of my abuse. I can't cope with the simplest tasks because I have such a deep hatred for myself, and my failings. Not all of us hurt others, from my experience, we hurt ourselves more than anything. Having a relationship with God helps, meds help, people who aren't toxic or being out the worst in u, help. Time management, planning meals, times u leave for work, outfits, setting timers, no extreme temperatures. Try to sleep and rest. I don't like quiet time, I like Ol Mike here, but I like alone time. No spouses, kids, or pets. Get ur inner self chilled out. Don't have too much caffeine. Take the roads without bad traffic. It doesn't make the thoughts go away, but it makes them less loud and less escalated. We're among the population. U don't know who we r. We look and act appropriately. The ones that roadrage r tools of a different kind. Not humble. Not trying to be well for others if not for themselves.

If it's so obvious to us, I have to believe LE heard it too and were just unable to prove as much. I guess they were happy with the confession that led to conviction, and anything beyond that was deemed pointless. It's scary to think about.
