Unless you have ADHD in which case procrastination is NOT a habit but a function of the brain. If you tried these types of "hacks" and constantly failed try researching solutions of those who may have ADHD or ADD.

@@Matt-jp6if Well first off you are not alone and its more common then most people would like to admit. Secondly and the most unfortune is that procrastination will be a life long struggle if you have Inattentive ADHD. But there are lots of channels on RU-vid with tips and tricks on how to help you activate that dopamine and start doing stuff. First stop would be "HowToADHD". Jessica McCabe is fantastic and has lots of advice. Also when it comes to meds you may need to try different ones or even combos. Don't give up on it but talk to your doctor. Good luck and keep searching and trying new things. Just try and avoid the advice that is for neurotypical folks.

@@DoctorNastyy True, but you can manage it better and not feel like crap because advice designed for neurotypical people didn't work. ADHD has its own strengths too like hyperfocus. If you can channel it correctly its like a super power.

I always end up feeling very angry with myself *after* I have *finally* successfully completed a task I had previously been procrastinating on because I discover it wasn't even that hard once I had got started. You mention in the video that we procrastinate to avoid stress but the act of procrastinating is also a major source of stress. Avoiding work to do something "pleasurable" (like watching TV) isn't actually pleasurable because we know we should be working!

I know exactly what you are talking about. My favourite is that I even start doing pseudo usefull stuff to procrastinate which I can easier justify than straight up youtube.

Definitely still just as stressful! Not only are you worried about doing the thing, but the time limit (if it has one. Most things do, really) Getting distracted is only a minor save. You have the guilt of not doing stuff and avoiding it.

One way i try to get around it is simply making myself bored of whatever is distracting me. Often my phone. After a while you know you have to get to something and nothing is short or appealing enough to watch or check up on. You get bored and decide "well, i need to do this _anyway,_ should just do it, bite the bullet"

SUMMARY: 1. When you think about a goal or action (studying, tidying up,working out etc) count five seconds. 2. Once five seconds are up, prepare for your goal/action in the next 55 seconds. (tidy desk space, turn on your study materials, get your dumbells etc) 3. Do the thing. Studies say if you made it this far you are 80% likely to keep going with your task.

If procrastination is a habit, then it's better to get rid of it instead of applying new habits onto it. Habits stay in subconscious; to make them disappear, you need to bring it to conscious, by being hyper-aware about what you're doing: noticing the feeling that makes you grab your phone, carefully observing how you feel when procrastinating, if you get bored throughout and so on. If you do try it, there's an important note to take: don't fight against it, just let into it with huge awareness about what you're doing and what's going on.

Yea, for example it feels so weird to conciously jack off, but we do it especially because we get subconcious and temporarily loose all our problems. You just think “wtf am I genuinely doing petting my snake to pixels of people I will never know like a fkn monkey”

My 60s procrastination rule: procrastinate until you only have 60s left to accomplish whatever the task is. Use the procrastination time to meditate and/or pray to unlock that dog in you, this will ensure superhuman performance in crunch time and that way you will actually achieve something even greater by procrastinating than you would've if you got to it right away.

I have trouble making myself do stuff unless I specifically plan the exact amount of time I need before the deadline. Need to write a paper? If it's 1000 words, I need 500 per 30 min typically, so it'll be an hour for that. Add 30 min for getting souce citations ready, and then another 30 min as a buffer in case anything takes too long. This results in me starting my 1000 word paper at 10 pm the night it's due and still almost always getting it done on time. The problem with fixing procrastination for me is that I still almost always get stuff done on time despite waiting until the last possible moment, so there's less incentive to change.

As someone who routinely participates in National Novel Writing Month, this is especially apt because writing is something that requires long periods with no/minimal distractions -- but once you do latch on to something (anything) to actually start the writing process, it becomes hard to _stop._

How'd it go this year, OP? 2023 was my first NaNo and I actually made it all the way to 50k! And that's with a couple of nasty setbacks along the way, too. And my experience was pretty similar, both on the daily granular scale and in terms of the whole project--day 1 was the hardest day, and usually the first few minutes after sitting down were the hardest on any given day. Once I got some momentum going, though, it generally got easier. It also helped that I had some online friends that were willing to hear me talk about my progress all month LOL

English is my second language. Took me 15 seconds to realize that you really mean 'apt', not an abbreviation for something. 'Apt' is not a word I come across often. Anyways, good for you that this method works, I'm going to try it as well :)

@@life-destiny1196 Buckle up. I first participated in 2007, and every year I've found _some_ way to reach the 50k goal, whether or not the story was even complete after 30 days trying. This year's story: - It's a fantasy adventure starting when the main character got cursed by a dying fox (which turned _him_ into a fox), only for the fox to realize they cursed the wrong person but there's no takebacks on curses. Whoops! - Additionally, someone else seems to have started impersonating the main character as a human. - Everything is actually narrated from the POV of the fox who cursed the main character (and now exists as a separate voice in their head). Problems I ran into: - General scope/story creep - Lacking an overall outline / pantsing - General pacing issues - One week in, my laptop crashed & wiped my draft (10k words at the time) but fortunately, the online wordcounter tool I use keeps an autosave so ultimately I lost "only" one day (not the whole thing) - Two weeks in, my laptop crashed with disk errors which required ultimately 72 hours to fix the filesystem before it would boot normally again, but fortunately I know how to use recovery mode / command prompt so I could retrieve the file intact and just keep writing (on a different laptop), though I also had to spend time just backing up my user files in general The results: - Final wordcount: 54,500 words - End result: An incomplete story, but good enough for now - Ranked with previous years: mid-to-upper-tier

I actually use procrastination to counter procrastination. I noticed that I had been watching youtube a lots so I try my own method. First, find the video that I want to watch (from subcribed channel, random recommendation video) that longer than 1 minute and put it into a playlist. Second, watch it if I have free time. The first time I did this method was a success, I was about to procrastinate then see a whole playlist of video that have a total of 1 hour long watch time so I back out, scrolling a little bit (if I saw the video that is interesting, I immediately put it in the list and back out), feeling kinda lazy then continute working. For a whole day, I completely forgot about youtube and my done my work (I even try to find something else to do even though I could have watch RU-vid after completing my work)

It's gone beautifully, I have been cutting down on youtube by getting rid of the feed with a google extension, and picking videos from the subscriptions tab. I wrote poetry more often because I've always liked doing it, and then reading. Just by reading the first chapter of Paradise lost an evening irresponsibly late (which is what made it feel genuine) and loving it. I decided to stay up till midnight reading it even though I would be tired the next day because I needed to properly take advantage of this urge to read. The next day I watched tv for an hour before bed and when I went to bed I was just really pissed at myself because I realized that reading would have been more enjoyable and I wanted to read. After that I decided to actively cut down on internet stimulation because I prefer reading after mental silence. If my mind is too active I'll just draw until I'm ready. Something that unnerved me was how after working out without music it was hard to live with it, but I now felt as if the "joy" from music was just to distract me from the pain. I'm now thinking that most internet use is a form of escapism, even music, and I love music...A few days ago aI acted on my routinely strong impulse to go out in the evenings with music on and spend an hour biking, and after I felt mentally drained and satisfied, but also as if it drained away my creative motivation from my own creative expression. Like I could've spent that evening writing a poem that would have made my mind clear, and it would have been healthier, (and again, more enjoyable). One more thing...I did relapse in my porn addiction a few weeks ago and I wasn't quite ready to quit 2 addictions at once becauseI might have failed and drop to the bottom pitts again. Now that I've stabilized my creative outlets, ie reading, writing, & drawing, I'm fixing that. I just couldn't ignore that elephant in an update, again, thank you for asking.

idk my surface 6 overheats when i have just file explorer simultaniously to goodnotes open. it freaking doesnt respond forever and wont recover. Legit made me burnout last week due to maths deadlines. oh well now i skipped a whole week of classes and got twice the workload for tuesday 🤷‍♂help

I did something kind of similar with my ADHD. Any time I had homework for my college courses, I would go to a random library or college campus (city wide community college). Sure, I would procrastinate getting into the car, and picking a place to go to, but once I was there my brain wouldn't be on "play mode" like it was at home. Obviously, neither hack is a universal fix, but any small thing with a potential for a life changing impact is worth trying once.

That was my way of making myself train more! When I didn’t feel like going to the gym, I simply forced myself to get ready to go and then decide (aka active procrastination), and 80% of the times I did end up going, 20% really really didn’t feel like it which is also fair.

Absolutely works. I wish it worked 100% of the time, but it works often enough that it has become a useful strategy for me. Just "setting up", with no plans to actually perform the task, seems to slip right past the procrastination instinct, and then, like the video says, I most often end up doing the task.

This rule actually works, and I've been implementing it for years. It's the only rule that has ever worked for me lol I see it as a rule of incremental progress. You do the very first step of a task, and then you get to decide whether you continue or not. You're only about 1% in at that point, but you've done something and that's good. Sometimes you will in fact continue, and that's what the rule is about. Not a 100% success rate, but much better than literally no progress.

Nice work, your videos deserve some traction. A useful thing I find when going to work in the garage/workshop is to just sweep the floor, don't think about the projects, trying not to think about it seems to build a kind of motivation (and I find lots of stuff I've misplaced). Sweep up at the end too.

Oh my goodness, than you so much for this video, I literally cannot describe how useful this video is. I have many ambitions, from a variety of college classes to pass, so many things that I want to learn in my spare time, AND even now, a new project: My current RU-vid channel that is slowly growing. I have many goals, but I feel like sometimes, I just sort of lose interest, or get.. sidetracked. This video helped me with trying to get my stuff together, and I hope that I'll continue to do so! Thank you for making me aware of my procrastination and potentially, more importantly, how to stop it.

This actually works. I'm speaking out of experience. Even though I hate Electronics, whenever I've pending concepts to study, I say to myself, "Okay, I'm just gonna open the pdf or the book and just write down the heading and then maybe relax." But when I do this, I feel like maybe I should write a couple of lines before relaxing and without knowing I'm procrastinating my habit of procrastination. Brilliant trick!

First time watching this, and it literally helped me go to the store and do the shopping I needed to. I'm writing this after coming back. (I live alone and I walk to the store). It's simple enough to be worth a try, even to "the worst" of us. And in this case, it worked.

Yes. I facilitate group recovery meetings and one of the ideas is that motivation often follows action. Make the decision and take the action and soon, you are in it and into it.

There's something to be said for not only acknowledging stress, but releasing it. One of the most unhealthy habits I had for 10 years was a thought loop of negative things about myself, and while I acknowledged my stress, I did nothing to try to get rid of it. Instead of simply stating the stress, I now say it once, and completely let it go.

With adhd i definitely find myself putting things off. Ive done it continuously through school and into college. While it is not healthy to add the stress of "i need to do this assignment" with "this is due in a few hours", it kickstarts my brain into focusing more cause i know i _need_ to do it. There is no benefit to not doing it, more of a deficit. Im glad my stuff is due at a minute to midnight (online), it gives me time to be ready before the end of the night, when i know i have to actually get sh- done. The biggest problem isnt that its hard or i dont know what to do (usually), but just getting into the mindset of doing the assignment. Starting is the hardest part. Once im going, it's much easier to do it. I just need to force myself to actually get my sh- together and focus on thinking about what im doing. I dont concentrate because i cant think of what to do. I need a push to start a thought off. By then, it's just keeping myself motivation to see it to the end. (Even with lengthy projects. Research papers do it to ya 4 hours straight.) Give me a wip assignment? I do it halfway, just enough for a grade, then i'll procrastinate until the next due date where i have to actually finish it.

I never liked forcing myself to do anything that I didn't want to, but when I said to myself "forcing for 2 minutes is fine, right?" Just like you said, it leads into more work for 80% of people. I can do that, because it's not overbearing to force 2 minutes, but I end up engaged in my work.

What's more, find a task that's very simple to do that's related to your work. If you're leaning about investing in stocks, simply start yourself by quickly analyzing a company and listing easy to find data. There's is very minimal thought needed but as you do it you get into the rhythm of studying. For doing a research article like on a Book, have various topics about the subject you want to explore and have them prepared for each study session to do a simple recap on them with easy to answer questions prepared beforehand. Example - Character, Age, Relations, Job, Hobby, Dream, How do they contribute to the story? Just like that you're already writing your report after a few mundane details.

If you have constant Burnout from high school or college, procrastinating may happen as a way for you, to cope with the burnout. Don't beat yourself up and try to take breaks when you can.

Yeah... I'm usually so motivated at the start of the year, but end up feeling completely burnt out right before the exams. Perhaps sometimes you just need a break, instead of "hacking" yourself into more productivity, which will make the burnout situation even worse.

So I learned recently the concept of getting one small task done each day… I applied this to coding discord bots and started out by literally just coding one command to completion each day… every. Single. Time that i sat down to do this I’d end up spending about 5-6 hours working 🤷‍♂️

I like this "2 minutes rule". The day before yesterday I went for a small walk. On my way walking I ended up walking 2 hours. Fixing an easy objective is less reluctant, and you can change it on the course.

This video is really something. I mean it's amazing and filled with so much useful information up to about the 2 minute mark, then it drops off. By minute 2, there was about half a minute of complete silence which is completely unprofessional. At the 5 minute mark, I was sure that it was just some kindof dramatic pause and that there was going to be a payoff. I was convinced until about minute 30 when I figured out that there would be no payoff. But I kept going anyway. After the 2 hour mark, I started getting really bored and felt the video was dragging on way to long. I'm currently about 6 hours in and it doesn't seem to be picking up again. So to those watching I suggest stopping around the minute and 29 seconds mark. Good video either way.

Good video. I like how you know from where the Procrastination comes from and how it should be solved instead of just tackling the issue. unfortunetely for people with different brains, also known as neurodivergents, they might need a different coach inside. I just imagine myself how I can make myself or others happy... or that i am a slave having to work.
