@@oDrashiao Thanks! Yea if we did that it would mess it up for French speakers and all over subtitles that would have to go over the subs. 20% of our audience uses some form of captions for accessibility reasons or because they watch in a different language. I would do anything for Valve to let Arkane just release Ravenholm onto the internet. No one will consider it canon, they put so much hard work in. Never mind selling it, just let Arkane show their work to the world and I'm sure all Half Life fans will love it. It looks incredible, Half Life is back and there would be nothing better than Valve showing their further dedicated return to the series than Arkane showing their old work. They've already let Half Life's remake be sold on THEIR platform, and they let the devs keep the money even though it's not their IP. Even Half Life 2 Remastered is being rumoured, again Valve aren't making it but they will likely let him sell it. They care more about the series influence more than how much money it makes, that has always applied. Even before they had Steam.

Can thank Bethesda for that, they did next to no marketing for it + their whole "we don't send games to reviewers until the game is out (and no one cares at that point because journalists have moved on to "the next big thing") : they killed Prey, Dishonored 2 (that came out like 2 weeks before Battlefield / Call Of Duty and other big tentpoles, basically sending it to get slaughtered against the marketing push of those titles). Oh and the optimization for titles was... subpar to say the least, telltale sign of not investing much in QA by Bethesda.

@Tyler.21
@Tyler.21 4 года назад
@@aed3r It was considered the end of the Kaldwin era. But not the last of Dishonored. The studio are taking some time away now to focus on Deathloop and other projects, but Dishonored will return. There are plenty of locations to explore within the Dishonored universe. We've only seen two locations (Dunwall and Karnaca) but there are plenty more to be fleshed out. How and when we will see those, remains to be seen. But Bethesda believes strongly in Arkane, and given the financial success of the series, it wont be the last spin Arkane has at Dishonored.

"We dont care about the money, ofcourse we need the money to make the next one, but we are not gonna chase what makes money. We chase what artistically inspires us" This is always how I have felt when I played Dark Messiah as a young kid to when I replayed it as an adult, Compared to other games, even more popular games I always felt the atmosphere, the game itself, was a work of passion.

"That race for more technology, more content, shaders, more looks, etc... often comes at odds with that agility that we need to try quick, cool ideas." Such a strong statement, and even stronger coming from the man who founded one of the studio that, in my opinion, shook up and even revolutionalized modern gaming in terms of design but also in terms of art. It really resonates with me. Thanks to everyone at Arkane who never gave up throughout the years and made it possible, and thank you Noclip for telling that story.

Just look at the demo made for Unreal 5 game engine, so much quality but zero idea in the gameplay. Ok it's just a demo but that's what they are going to sell us, wonderful realistic images made by technicians with stupid content because there will be no budget left for developing ideas!
@co28158
@co28158 4 года назад
@@kukipett The whole point of the new engine is to give artists more breathing room and more capabilities to be creative. Put in the right hands, it could actually allow for more creative and unique experiences not less. Just because they showed a hyperrealistic setting with bland gameplay for the demo doesn't mean that's what every company and developer is going to do with the engine.

@@co28158 Of course, but do you realise the huge amount of work, time and money you need to make such assets for a game. Games a becoming more and more complex, more and more beautiful but less and less interesting, and there is not much creativity in using quixel assets, the art is in what you create not in what you copy from reality. IIRC there's a way to license the Source engine and assets (including Half-Life assets), but not the IP itself. If you look, HDTF never explicitly mentions "Half-Life" anywhere on the store page. Obviously in the actual game, it literally copy/pastes the characters and maps, but it's fair game for the license agreement they signed. Valve had no involvement outside licensing the Source engine out and selling the game on Steam - both of which it just lets any fucking loser do these days. It's the same thing that a lot of people have done to make mods or small games, but they never had any publicity - or the fucking nerve to charge money for their amateur shit. On the other hand, Valve was funding the Ravenholm project with their own money under the actual Half-Life IP. They would be in charge of marketing, funding, helping/directing the devs, etc. They probably didn't think the profit would make up the investment for a spin-off HL episode. It's easy to say in hindsight that it would've been great and sold tons of copies, but there was probably some justifiable reason in their minds at the time. Valve as a company is just a huge mystery to outsiders and terrible at communicating their decisions/business goals clearly, as we saw with the HL3 silent treatment, paid mods, Greenlight, etc.

When I played Dishonored as a 16 year old boy when it came out, it changed my world, my perspective of what a video game could be. I have over 330 hours playtime in the franchise and wrote an academic paper about the implications of agency and morals within it. Even though I haven´t finished Prey yet, it got me through once of the hardest periods in my life last year, when I really needed an escape. It gave me the chance to explore a world with defined rules but enough agency, to make me feel like I had an impact on it, to really express myself and experiment. Dishonored is the reason Im studying video game design and that is a reason, why Im putting up with a lot of the hardships I face. Its the kind of game I want to make, but that scares the shit out of me at times. This documentary has granted me some vision into the rocky and passionate road it takes, but its also shown me that its possible and well worth it. I cant stress enough how much this franchise means to me and also the company behind it. Thanks

I was also 16 when it was released, having just graduated high school. Dishonored was a blind buy, but I had actually played Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, not realizing it was the same studio. I was so hooked on Dishonored, I actually beat the whole thing the day I started it (on PS3) - a whopping 11 hour mostly low chaos playthrough. I couldn't sleep without knowing the Empress was safe. Even though I was tired, I didn't want Emily to hate Corvo so I stayed low chaos. Though, turns out, she wouldn't hate Corvo, she would just be influenced by high chaos in a negative way I literally have over a thousand video games and Dishonored is top 3 of all time. Something like: 1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Dishonored 3. Bloodborne

Turns out we had robbed the place alrdy, because you could go in a different way. I´ve recently spend 3 hours analyzing the walls of light for a paper for uni and had the time of my life. I’m one of the many women who fell absolutely in love with Dishonored when it first came out and eagerly awaited its sequel. I just wish I knew beforehand that Corvo was actually tacked onto the game not the other way around. I played with both of them and enjoyed both playthroughs, I was of course disapointed about how they weren't really different from each other (but with the replayability of the Dishonored games it wasn't really that big of a deal), but if it was presented from the start as "Emily is supposed to be the main protagonist, Corvo mode is here just for our fans, but isn't really the main focus" I would probbably pick Emily 1st and have a very different first impression of the game. The way that it actually seemed to me was that it is 50/50 Emily/Corvo in terms of who is the intended protagonist of the game. I wouldn't really mind if they made it 70/30 in favour of Emily with Corvo as a tribute to fans, rather than splitting it like that. I don't know if it is clear what I meant, but I would just like them to make it more obvious that Corvo is an tribute add-on, so I wouldn't expect what I expected thinking that the game was 2 protagonists focused from the start.

Dishonored and Prey, of the best gaming has to offer in recent years and massively underrated. I have all the respect in the world for companies that put artistic integrity over making money, and it shows with titles like those. And it's really disappointing to see how much this industry aims for the bare minimum and gets better revenue, when others truly work their asses to get a cool franchise out. As for the cancelled HL project yeah... add it to the list of countless projects Valve cancelled. Honestly if I was a game dev and Valve would approach to me to make a game, I'd decline immediately. It's a 9/10 chance they'll end up cancelling whatever you're working on on a whim for one reason or the other.

People hating on Bethesda, but as a publisher they allow their teams to make great solo games with even sequels even if it didn't sell well. Dishonored, The evil within 1&2, Prey ,Doom (the development of this game was so long), Wolfenstein of Machine Games. When i look back on the 2010's, Bethesda have published my favorites solo games of this era.

Yes. For me, Blizzard, iD Software and Epic Megagames own the 90s, early 2000s. Valve and Bethesda owns 2000s. And Bethesda just keeps sending it in 2010s. That's just for me. I know the industry would include The Sims and sports franchise games, because they've had quite the following, too. Definitely a lot of choice of some very high quality games. Which is probably detrimental to Valve and the Half-Life universe. They just hold back waiting to figure out and design the "Next Big Thing" (ergo, HL: Alyx).

Dishonored sold well. Dishonored 2 didn't, reason why you won't see a third game. Prey was terribly marketted by Bethesda. As for Doom, I don't think Bethesda had anything to do with the quality of the final product. Bethesda didn't want Mick Gordon to use guitars in his soundtrack, to give you an idea... Bethesda bought excellent studios, who keep making great games, in spite of Bethesda but no thanks to them IMO.

I mean going by your definition, then a lot of 3D modelers would be ripping off a lot of other 3D modelers (I doubt an AK of M4 model can be that much different after a decade of constant shooters being made) but you wouldn’t call that them ripping off each other would you

Honestly Arkane made a huge impact with Dark Messiah for me and I've always wondered how a studio with so much skill and potential was denied making a finished game over and over again. They've figured out how to do amazing physics, gameplay and animations with the Source engine like no other company did. Especially with the cancellation with Ravenholm I can't understand how they've looked at the progress and footage without giving them the recourses to develop it to the end. It was obviously a passion project and had so much more going for it in it's early alpha build. What a shame. I personally think Valve missed their chance to aquire Arkane to have an excellent Studio with deep understanding how a good game works. Even Alyx took ideas with the multitool and puzzles from their game. If they would've let Arkane work on Alyx it probably would've been much more dynamic and fun to play due to their way which they're designing dynamic, interactive games where the physics and environment plays an essential part of the game.
