Mr Cook - I have only recently come across your blogs - interesting and different. I am well retired now but was in the shipping and transport industry in Europe and the Middle East and lastly in UK retail distribution(encourage to come out of retirement to sort a major issue out - lasted 6 years) all my life, so I’ve learnt a bit. Obviously every Penny you can save is essential to your survival - so!! Fuel and wages usually account for 60plus % of operating costs - as you are an owner driver I guess you draw what you can afford!? So it’s fuel and tyres. I have been saying you up and you suddenly gave the game away when you talked about recalibrating your Daf with worn tyres and with new tyres you may gain an extra 1mph - so - in my last assignment - retail - they had a fleet of 30 vehicles which grew to 60plus, when I joined the average kpl was 2.1 when I finish is was 3.2 - work the saving out doing 200,000 km per week - the saving was enormous but was achieved over many years doing various things - double decker switching onto slopping front roof edges - saving 18% then driver training, very painful but very rewarding both in fuel saving but also insurance - less accident. When it came to fleet vehicle change!! We were operating Daf CF with a few Volvos and rental trucks covering peaks. I was very unimpressed with the Daf dealer and thought it would be Volvo but we had had a new Renault Premium over the previous Xmas period!! The kpl from that vehicle was significantly more than anything else,so despite my inner thought on Renault we took a 2 year deal inc maintenance , I think it was £350 per week ish. My advise to you is to take your foot off the throttle - try it. The training to our drivers was take it up to full speed, set the cruise control and then nock it back 2 notches - you will save loads of fuel. Tyres are very important, I spent so much time researching and testing different tyres, what suits one truck/make doesn’t suit them all. The last test I ran was over 6 manufacturers, the worst was Mich the best was Good/Bridg. Having a wider steer tire can seriously improve the ride and stops shouldering. Rears need to have a drive axle tread plus a harder rubber drive. The only other thing I would say is cash is king - get as much cash in the bank before you start to grow as extra vehicles and drivers bring their own problems and costs, they will not treat things as you do. I wish you all the luck in the world as I have had a ball leading the life I had.
Well done David! I watched a lot of videos about truckies and i would say from my point of view that your videos are one of the best around with very very valuable info. Not the usual boring videos showing only lights and speakers on side lockers for dreamers to catch. Well done mate. Keep going like this. You doing really well.

One thing I've found helpful when driving to see who could turn to for help say you've got a delivery to somewhere that's hard to get to but you already know the delivery location and there's 2 ways to get to it an easy way or a difficult way see what answer you'll get if they're ok they'll give you the directions of the easy route and tell you about the difficult route the bell ends will just give you the difficult route I've found some drivers at the same company the biggest bell ends about and drivers from other companies the absolute best when you're on the road you really need to help each other out

i was on the the M65 Accrington today at 4 pm there was a silver vauxhall vectra on hard shoulder a women was walking with petrol can towards darwen services , ,i was about to stop my son said leave it she is out of fuel her fault not our problem dad keep going . i felt bad .
you are so right about the recovery.. if a tire blows, you have to have a spare one.. and some companies in IT and FR, even tho you have spare one, they ll force our driver to recieve theirs and than they send us invoice for 1000 EUR.. worst case scenario if your truck gets into a traffic incident.. these tow companies would charge you thousands of euros and they will hold your vehicle or whats left of it until you pay..and they can do that ( DE!)
In 1995 I had to change trailer with a drive on the beach I took it to Italy once there open back doors 48 people in all peed and mess on goods £250,000 goods gone totally damaged,all taken by police so I can understand why u said this. Drive safe keep safe ❤❤❤
I need a bit of a favour if possible. I am trying to get to Spain to access the treatment abroad scheme as I can not be treated in Ireland. I am from Galway and I have 2 little doggies Batman and Robyn I want to bring with me, but its hard to get a ferry if you don't travel by vehicle. I am in bad health and I have to fund myself getting out there. If you know anyone that would give myself and my two small dogeens a lift across the water I would be ever so greatful. The perks are get off the ferry in Europe no traffic just go roads so smooth tissue paper ,but get off at dover ,and night mair concrete roads arrrrrr i hate coming back, Going out is beautifull always, unless its germany ,stow stow stow , FUNF KILOMETER STOW .
Yes, I would suggest making your own private channel, the groups are not a fan of children on there but if you make your own you shouldn’t have an issue
Old drivers ive seen young drivers get fuel mars bars cans crisps put there fuel card on dash then it goes down the air vent , 4 hours £600 , EUROS ADAC to find that card ,or they fuel up then leave garage with wrong card in wallet ,screwed in 9 hours wrong card read your card not yours your going no where . then police come .
