Thanks for this video. Just bought a 1gr 120 series no service history. Pickup was pristine and no sludge but very glad I checked.

Checked mine today and it was just as bad. Full of sludge and about 80% blocked on the pick up. Keep the videos coming, they have given me the confidence to do some of the maintenance myself and has probably saved my engine from catastrophic failure!

Awesome vid mate, keep up the great work. What is the best way to clean the pickup once it's out? I will be now looking at mine, although I hope it is ok as it has had regular services all its life. Cheers

Just did mine and I’m happy to say I wasted my time, she was clean as. Car service history in the book there has been a few times they’ve missed a service it had 242000ks now she has 268000ks serviced every 10000ks since I’ve had it.

Wish I could post a picture to compare. I have taken internal picture of my sump at 140k serviced every ten k. Mine is absolutely spotless. I change it myself and cost me $70 for genuine oil, oil filter and sump plug washer.

I’ve never replaced a sump plug washer on any car I’ve serviced & never had a problem. I’ve always thought it was a bit of a furphy to replace it each time. 90 Prado with 400,000km, 120 Prado with 312,000km, my wife’s two Nissans with 300,000km each & her Kia before that with 160,000km that I start regularly servicing from 30,000km. A couple of other people’s cars I serviced long term for a couple hundred thousand km each. 3 cars of mine before my Toyotas, 100,000km approx on all 3 each while I owned them & I serviced them all from new. Never replaced the sump washer once and never a leak once among all of them. I don’t believe the washers cause leaks. If they do I’d blame young mechanics who tighten the sump bolts up way too tight & distort them. They’re my thoughts on the subject.

Mine was worse than this as well as throwing a timing chain code. Did a full pull down on the timing case, sump and pickup etc. Apart from the worn timing chain, and the disgusting appearance of the inside of the motor, the motor was in really good condition. Valve clearances and oil pump were well within spec. Spent a lot of time cleaning the motor till it looked like aluminium again, changed everything serviceable on it, and it is like a new motor.

With how much I’m getting ready to spend just swapping out my oil pump; I would be tempted to swap to a diesel. I wish they were available in the US.

Just be careful it doesn’t take much to cause damage on these engines the 1KD Diesel puts up with a fully blocked or pick up for a long time much more robust complete different cause of the problem though keep watching videos I can see you’ve been busy

@@Fourby4Diesel I'm pretty interested to buy LC. Watching your videos helped me to decide which one should I buy... Due to the new CO² laws imposed accros the Europe, soon we won't be able to take J12 to cities because of the diesel ban. Anyway I need a solid car for 80% road and 20 offroad. I don't do many km per year mostly around 15k, so 4.0 V6 would be the choice. I never had any issues with Toyota petrol engines, I know watching your videos that KD's are great engines but at 15k per year a lot of short trips it would make me only headache. Thanks for the videos anyway, keep the good work. As a hobby mechanic we can learn a lot.👌 Cheers from Switzerland mate👍

Hi Anthony How would you go about cleaning this. You mentioned a 50/50 mix of oil and kero for a flush. Is this a potential to cause addition blockages

I used acetone. I let it soak for an hour and it was clean.

My gut is telling me to check my oil pickup. Yes i fear my pickup is clogged to some degree. I will check this soon.

Hi Anthony planning to check mine on Hilux. Its a different type of sump and much tight compared to Prado. How can I seal it after I have opened it. Apparently cant find Oil Sump Gasket any where for 1 GR FE Hilux

Or when your service your own vehicle every 6k then take it to a crook, only to have them put carbon in your engine deliberately. Then after complaining they state it's from lack of services.

I honestly don't think that engine has an oil change in years..also i believe the pick up screen on the 1gr is way too small

That sludge is because of petrol washdown from vehicles that run rich (which is most vehicles) and poor servicing. The fuel contaminates the oil. Blows around and gases off via the pcv system and turns to a varnish and eventually works its way into what you see there.
