Thanks for watching! Let me know down in the comments if you recognise yourself in this cycle? Have you noticed how anxiety and stress can exacerbate or even trigger an IBS flare up?
@gromba

Great video. Over the years it feels like it's my stomach triggering the anxiety rather than the other way around. Even with PPI's and diet change, there is not much relief too be had. Years and years of abuse, tension, stomach acid, has made this chronic.
@TheCalmHappyGut
@TheCalmHappyGut Год назад
So glad to hear this video was helpful. When I first start working with clients we focus in on the nervous system - as very often they are running on autopilot of flight/fight response - not allowing their digestive system to function as it should. Unfortunately a history of trauma and abuse can ''prime'' the nervous system for ''survival'' - which can lead to many different symptoms in the body- including IBS.

I stumbled upon this, luckily. My stomach has been feeling tight, knotted, like someone is pushing on it. Just constipated as well, but my constant anxiety made it appear, and that feeling it triggered caught me in a cycle. I constantly think I'm dying for some reason

Thank you for sharing Jenny. The stress-symptom cycle can be incredibly debilitating. When it comes to stress one of the first areas I work with clients on is around their thoughts - often the ''What if....?'' thoughts which can really fire up your stress response. I recently made a video talking about the 7 types of thinking patterns which can trigger an IBS flare up. You may gain some insights into what's happening for you. I've linked the video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gCk80EeN0xg.html

That's been my nightmare .it started 10 y ago. Got sick during a trip. And changed my life. But psychologists don't get it. The cycle of sick +fear+fitting more sick+anxiety+more IBS+avoiding+anxiety+inadequacy+remuneration etc etc. They don't talk about the nervous system ...I hope I can one day be free of this cage
@TheCalmHappyGut
@TheCalmHappyGut Год назад
It can be a really challenging cycle to break free from, especially if you don't understand the impact on the nervous system. Strategies such as breathing exercises (diaphragmatic breathing/belly breathing in particular), learning how to manage your thoughts, and hypnosis/meditation can all help to unhook you from this cycle. Often the easiest place to start is to recognise when the tension increases in your body (that might be jaw tension, shoulders, chest or stomach) and use that as a cue to pause and take 5-10 slow deep breathes. From there you can start to add in additional techniques, but the breath is a great way to signal to your nervous system/body ''that you are safe''.

Well, your example with Toby is exactly what I am dealing with. I have muscular dystrophy so I've had tons of surgeries and antibiotics. After a spinal fusion 4 years ago, and catching double lung pneumonia, my stomach wasn't the same. It started causing me a lot of depression and anxiety and made it so I wasn't able to eat all the healthy foods I ate before due to them making my symptoms worse. I have so many things to worry about because of my disability so it makes it hard to mentally relax. I get these vibrations in the trunk of my body that feels like I'm sitting in a running car and I just feel really wired like I drank a bunch of coffee. I also live with my parents who both suffer from mental illnesses that cause a lot of outbursts and unpredictability. I have PTSD from both of them as well as other events that have happened in my life. I know that I need to live on my own and separate myself from them a little bit from them but it's just so hard because I'm physically reliant on my mom at the moment.
@TheCalmHappyGut
@TheCalmHappyGut Год назад
Thank you for being here, and I'm sorry to hear the frustrations and challenges you are facing currently. Worry can be a tremendous source of stress for people, and this stress can impact the body in different ways, including triggering IBS flare ups. When it comes to breaking out of the stress-symptom cycle I talk about in this video, there is a dual approach we can take - 1. Reducing the impact and the amount of stress in our lives, and 2) Increasing relaxation and switching on the parasympathetic nervous system - deep breathing exercises such as box breathing and diaphragmatic breathing are great, and also hypnosis and other forms of guided imagery.

Thanks so much for your question! In my experience from working with clients over many years there are certain personality characteristics I see. Some of these traits are perfectionism, not being able to say no (i.e. finding hard to set and maintain boundaries), believing the world is an unsafe place (often subconscious belief which has them on constant ''threat detection mode'', and holding emotions in their stomach area. Being highly sensitive is also something I see with some of my IBS clients. I hope this answers your question.

Thank you so much for nailing this on the head for me. I have certain triggers that flare up my ibs fight or flight nervous system. For example, if I'm going in a vehicle on a journey somewhere, going for a walk or somewhere where there's no bathroom or doing activities where I'll be away from a toilet i become fearful of having an accident which brings on panic. It has become really upsetting. Docs told me I have stress induced ibs-c, so they just gave me laxatives, but that's not helping my actual symptoms. As well as looking into cbt, I was going to ask the doctor for beta-blockers to help my nervous system for now until I get cbt underway. Would you say that would help my anxiousness?
@TheCalmHappyGut
@TheCalmHappyGut 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for sharing Donna. It sounds as though CBT would be very helpful for you, and this is often a big area I support my clients with. Learning how to change the relationship you have with those anxious thoughts can really help you look at situations differently and help dial down that fight-flight response - which can lead to a calmer nervous and digestive system. When it comes to my thoughts on beta-blockers, this is something you would need to speak with your doctor about.
@tomservo75

I don't get it often, but when I do.... I think my IBS is unusual in that it's more gas and bloating, I guess technically IBS-C though I have mostly normal movements during a flare-up. It's just that gas and stool get backed up long enough to cause very bad amounts of stomach pain. For me, I can handle the short bursts of pain that flare up for 2-3 days at a time on and off. The problem isn't even so much the pain itself it's the fact that I have a history of hernias which have twice resulted in bowel BLOCKAGE. Maybe the IBS was triggered by the multiple colon surgeries I had to have, because it was never much of a problem before. So the anxiety doesn't really come from the pain itself it's from what does it mean, am I going to have to go to hospital again. Once things start to pass, it has a positive spiral in that passing relives pressure which relieves pain which relieves anxiety. It's a very cyclic thing I can be perfectly fine for months with only very slight occasional pain then it'll just hit me for 2-3 days. I'm pretty sure that a lot of it is spasms too since my doctor gave me an anti-spasmodic drug called Hyosciamine which does sometimes help.

Thank you for your questions! Yes, I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 15 and struggled with symptoms for about a decade. It's been almost 20 years since I last experienced those symptoms. To answer the second part of your question, you first need to understand the role of the nervous system in IBS and the oversensitive nerves inside of the gut. This is in many ways why we can't say IBS can be ''cured''. We still don't know what causes some people to experience IBS symptoms, but some research suggests that we either have more nerves inside of our guts, or those nerves are naturally more sensitive. During stressful life events, symptoms could return. And if they do, if you know how to manage both your mind and how you respond - those flare ups are short-lived and maybe years in-between. So to answer the final part of your question - yes, you can learn how to move through them in a very different way (and often be in 'remission'). I hope that helps!

Thanks for your question! This cycle can continue for years unfortunately, but awareness is such an important step. Being more mindful about the things (thoughts, feelings, actions) which are maintaining this cycle can help you to break from it. Being able to attach a different 'meaning' to your experiences can help to reduce internal stress, which in turn helps to dial down the very overactive "flight or fight" response... in turn helping to support digestion. I'm sure you can understand it's impossible for me to give you a timeframe as everyone is different and your experiences/symptoms are personal to you. However, tools such as deep breathing, hypnosis, cbt can all help support you in this process.

my question is, is the anxiety causing the ibs and will the ibs go away if i deal with the anxiety or is the ibs causing anxiety? apparently ibs isnt curable so i have no idea what to do :(
@TheCalmHappyGut
@TheCalmHappyGut 10 месяцев назад
Whilst IBS is not ''curable'', it can be managed and symptoms reduced. Whilst everyone responds differently to CBT and gut directed hypnotherapy, on average these approaches see a 70-80% reduction in symptoms. When it comes to anxiety, it can definitely feel a bit confusing with which came first. As the brain talks to the gut, and the gut talks to the brain it can be a combination of both. A great tool to use to help with both digestion and anxiety is the simple practice of belly breathing or diaphragmatic breathing. I made a video talking more about this here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6UbyDx0WE9s.html

Because of the close connection between your brain and gut, it's not uncommon to experience stomach discomfort during times of anxiety - this doesn't necessarily mean it's IBS though.
