What ever you want to take about is of interest, the subject of pay always comes up one way or another, now we know how it works. Have to say the picture you posted of you, Mary, and Kamie, with Ralph on his birthday is one of the best iv seen, you all look so beautiful ! The photo quality is most likely the best of its day. Glad you posted that. Thanks for another enjoyable segment. : )
I appreciate the explanation for why Richard Thomas was walking with a cane in that episode, the only explanation given in the episode was a motorcycle accident even though we never saw "John Boy" riding a motorcycle!
Hi, Judy. Thank you so much for starting this channel! It's really generous of you to take the time to share your memories and answer questions. It enhances the whole Waltons experience for us fans.
I'm 70!! Used to watch the Waltons with my mother when you first came out! We both loved it and watched every week. Love everyone on the show and the theme song brings back wonderful memories
Hi Judy...happy Monday beautiful gal...I so loved the Waltons...it was always a time when my Family would gather around the TV to watch your show...memories ...good ones..thank you all for such a grand show...you are all my Favorites...kinda hard to choose just one❤❤❤❤❤
I found out that Keith Coogan who appeared as Jeffrey was Jackie Coogans grandson in his biography in a tv magazine back in the 1980's and have seen Keith in a lot of tv series and movies since then Thank You again Judy.🇺🇲📺📺🇺🇲
It’s so strange that I’ve been wondering about residuals for quite a while now- I just didn’t want to get all up in your business. I’m so glad someone else has asked this for me. Thanks again for your time Judy
Hi Judy, thanks for sharing your answers to the questions. Always love to here the answers and learn more about the Walton's and beyond. Have a great week!
“ I’m sorry that I was such a fool “ Awesome work Judy and may all the blessings of happiness be yours. Judy a child singer before she was a star. Her father was killed in a work accident at her very young age. The family was struggling greatly to make ends meet. She began to be noticed by people in the business for her phenomenal ability. She then could help her mother with debts and expenses. Brenda Mae Tarpley, 12, 11, 1944. Also known as Brenda Lee. Atlanta Georgia 🇬🇪. I’m sorry 1960 .
Streaming "Match Game 73" this afternoon. Watched 5 of them with Michael Learned and Richard Thomas. That was fun. I guess they changed the celebrities every week. That was my favorite game show when I was in my early teens.
Pretty good example of unauthorized use of a character was the whole debacle of Donna Douglas going to court with Mattel over the Ellie Mae doll! You would think a big company like that would have worked everything out first!
I recently started watching Season 1 over for the millionth time and I love the intro in that season as it's longer than in other seasons. Do you remember what it was like to film that? I remember Kami saying somewhere (maybe on her channel) something about it- specifically about how when she came in at the end, they told her to run slower 😅 so I guess my question is what do you remember about filming that Season 1 intro?
I vaguely remember shooting it. Mostly it was like filming any other scene from an episode. They wanted us all to be excited about the arrival of the radio.
Great video Judy! It would be wonderful to see an interview with Marieclaire Costello who played Miss Hunter. Would that ever be possible? I’d also love to see Lynn Hamilton who played Verdie. I know Ms. Hamilton has been unwell and she is 94 yo but it would be wonderful to see her as well! I just love the guest interviews on your channel. You’re a great listener and fantastic interviewer! Sending love, Jan ❤
Wonderful to see you and your looking so lovely today and so beautiful!❤❤❤❤❤ what is your secret? Didn;t realize so much involved with making a tv show WOW & agents, oh I hope to make this one, hoping!
Nice topic. If you was to be in charge of "The Waltons" series, what types of changes or things you would have to happen on "The Waltons"? I bet it probably would be a challenge
My question is about conflict on the set. I am referring to conflict between actors, crew members and crew and cast. How were they resolved? How much time was lost on set. Thanks!
There was very little conflict on set so very little time lost on that. I believe if there was an issue the producer came down from the production office and had a conversation with whoever was upset.
Hi Judy, you mentioned the Jackie Coogan law, I read that the boy that played “Jeffrey” in the later episodes is the grandson of Jackie Coogan. We are watching the Waltons from start to finish and really enjoying it. We find that even the theme song is very comforting to us as a couple in our 60s.
@@judynorton2598 fantastic. I’ll have to go hunting for a clip on RU-vid. Unless you want to find it first and tell us about your experience. Was brave of you!
@@ruthmarner6582 I did speak a bit about it in a couple of Ask Judy segments here are some of those links: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X3blewir1Mo.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zTQFplJb1z8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JtMpPCuf6Jg.html There are definitely clips on RU-vid from the competitions I did. And it seems the full episodes are also available. I did season 7, 9 & 10.
Today, me and my mom was out knocking on doors inviting people to church and telling them about Jesus, and we talked to this black lady outside her home out of the country, and she's a woman missionary to Pittsburgh and really loves the Lord and was so tickled to death over my visit with her today for over 10 minutes.
Great questions Judy. I'm begging for 100k subscribers to you. You've earned it. I've heard some interviews from the 'Little House' cast and the Waltons really becomes even more special to me. Michael, based on the cast, had a massive ego but he was also generous getting actors who were struggling work - at minimal pay. THat apparently created a lot of tension on set. From your perspective, there really wasn't egos involved on the show and I think (correct me if I'm wrong), that Earl Hammer - a man with zero ego, really kept that in check. Cheers!
Hi Judy, I've always wondered why Grandpa would correct anyone who mentioned the Civil War; he would say "it was the war between the states"? Thanks for the video's, they are always enjoyable!
@@sheryllelliott4284 thought he called it the war of northern aggression too, I’ve come across where he corrects the civil usage recently, but not the other, could be misremembering 🤷♀.
I believe that southerners use the terms " war of northern aggression" or " war between the states" whereas northerners use the term " civil war" more. Most of that war was fought on southern land and they lost, so they view things a little differently.
@@megfuchs9425 i recall ‘the war between the states’ being used and likely preferred, in Va. in school. If I’d heard the northern aggression title I don’t remember but when Grandpa said it it caught my attention. I’m sure it was said, as that was a most prevalent sentiment, then, maybe now 🤷♀, I don’t pretend to have a read on it having been away for a long time. The teachers in Va then were very serious about teaching their students Va history. Many were DAR/DOC ladies, like the Baldwin sisters.
Judy, I think it had to be 5 because Richard only signed for 5 years. The major accident of all: Lucy broke her leg skiing while doing "Here's Lucy". It ended her physical comedy career.
I just watched the episode "The Ring". Your interactions with Martha Rose are classic Mary Ellen! GREAT!!! I've always wondered in series, what was the supposed age difference between John Boy and Mary Ellen? And was Jason just one year younger than John Boy? Did you have to learn to do the dances in that episode? Love The Waltons! ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed that Mary Ellen - Martha Rose rivalry :). I believe there was about 3 years between John Boy and Mary Ellen, so Jason was somewhere in between those two. I don’t think there was anything specific about the dance that had to be learned. I already knew how to waltz and various other dances.
It is sometimes done as a way for someone who isn’t given top billing to have a “special” credit. This is considered to give more value to their billing placement. Sometimes extra titles like “and introducing”, “special guest star” - or the actor with the designation of their character. Generally these are the last credit shown at opening credits.
I enjoyed your video very much and found it interesting when you were talking about different injuries that maybe somebody may have while away from the set. When you mention about John’s hand being injured, it reminded me of something I heard not long ago on a RU-vid video about one day when Andy Griffith was on the set rehearsing, he got angry about something and put his fist through the wall and hurt his hand And so they wrote that something about how he injured his hand a criminal. It is interesting how they can get around things like for example I don’t remember anything about the story but something about Melissa Sue Anderson, who played Mary Ingalls I don’t remember what season it was when she started wearing braces. I don’t remember if they were the kind that she could take out of her mouth back then in the 70s or if they did something to hide the braces I don’t remember anything about the story but it’s interesting how they come up with Ways to either hide something that can’t be seen or write in something to explain like injured hand. I am dictating this so I’m sure some of the words are not coming out correctly so I apologize. Thank you again for your videos. I enjoy them very much. Have a blessed day. Susan from Houston, Texas.
Yes, shows do have to write around various situations. I’m always amused by the way they try to disguise actresses who are pregnant when it doesn’t fit the storyline for the show. Baggie clothes, standing behind furniture etc :)
I recall seeing the movie September 30 1955 that Richard Thomas starred in. It was a great film about the impact of James Dean on high school kids. I had no idea that was how Richard was injured though! Great segment Judy ❤
When John Boy rode the motorcycle across the screen I think it was the title shown "September 30,1955". Then another date '1879'. But wasn't that movie released in 1979? Judy you may want to double-check this caption 😊
Growing up in the 1970’s/80’s, my family and I watched the Waltons on a regular basis for years. A great TV show and cast indeed. Today, I am 59 and still love this TV and enjoyed watching the reruns. However, living in the Phila., New Jersey and Delaware area I can’t watch the show anymore. For some reason, to my knowledge and I’ve looked everywhere, I am unable to find a network that does the reruns daily. I don’t understand it. Again, a great TV and cast of actors.
Sorry you’ve been having trouble finding the show. I know it’s been on Hallmark, INSP, MeTV and then I hear people talk about watching on amazon, FreeVee, and a couple of other streaming platforms.
I appreciate when fans ask questions I hadn't thought of myself! Today's video is illuminating! I wonder if industry leaders at the time The Walton's premiered had any notion of streaming, cable, DVDs, etc! If they had they probably would have kept their lawyers up all night writing boilerplate to make sure they wouldn't have to pay royalties until infinity! 😄 When you mentioned not being permitted to engage in dangerous activities while in production my mind jumped to commercial models who sometimes insure their legs, hands, feet! Did any of you children do any modeling? I stumbled upon a Pinterest photo of you girls with Ralph! You're in modern clothes but all wearing bonnets such as in A Christmas Carol and Ralph is holding an old-fashioned rifle! I wondered if you remembered what that photo was about. It struck me how beautiful you girls were and are and I wondered if you ever participated in fashion or cosmetics modeling! Thanks for a great Monday show, Judy! I'm still appreciating your most recent conversation with John and Mr Senensky! Lots of love to Walton's everywhere! ❤
Thanks, Holly. I don’t think any of us ever did any modeling. Not sure I’d have the patience, or aptitude for it :). I believe that photo was for a Thanksgiving promo of some sort.
The twins didn’t continue in acting. I had a chance to chat with them some time back. Here is that link if you’d like to watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GGloqeFKOC4.html
Hello Judy I so enjoy watching and learning about the Walton’s. I still watch the show daily and enjoy hearing about things not shown. Thank you for doing this. My question is when shouting the episodes on the mountain and next to the creeks flowing water where are those scenes ? I lived in Virginia and passed by the Moutain often it beautiful country.
Thanks so much. The exterior locations were mostly 3 locations. The back lot of Warner Bros Studios where Drucilla’s Pond was, a local location Franklin Canyon where there is a reservoir, so when you see a larger body of water that is there, then Frazier Park about 90 min north of Los Angeles. That was where we shot the top of the mountain scenes. The old homestead, any airplane dirt strip scenes, or more expansive mountain vistas.
Hi judy.Had questions about some of the story lines. Jim bob graduated in 44 and the war ended in 45, how would crazy jim bob become a Sargent in about a year??? All the boys were in the service but they never got haircuts??? When Corabeth and Ike got married, she looked like a very simple, didnt know anybody, virgin, years later they had a episode of a boyfriend she hadnt seen in years.???. Crazy questions but wanted to get your opinion on that, thanks. Still injoy the Waltons now just like I did back in the 70's. Thanks for what you do, love hearing the questions and answers😂
I just finished Season 5 and I remember thinking at the beginning that it probably WAS a real injury for Richard! Interesting about Jon's hand - in the scene you showed at the dinner table he was eating - maybe he really is left-handed, but if not, it's not something anyone would pick up on! Just fun to know now when rewatching! Oh my is right when you talk about contracts and all - you've seen a lot of changes over the years...thanks for sharing with us!
Was there anything in the contract prohibiting you from appearing on another network? I know the big 3 were really competitive so would they NOT want you to do anything on NBC or ABC (guest spots and whatnot)?
Greetings Judy, I grew up watching the Walton’s growing up!😊 My wife and I have been to the real Walton (Hamner) homestead, the museum and traveled around town viewing remarkable sights like Godseys store. Because I find myself reminiscing as I enter my mid 60’s, I wonder if the Walton cast does the same. I realize the mental image of Walton mountain vs. the Hollywood set are remarkably different, but I wonder if the “kids”, dream about what was. Thank you for sharing your experiences of that life with us.
Good day Judy, you do not disappoint. Thank you for your entertaining lesson on contracts. If your schedule permits perhaps you could zoom in on the PA event (s). Back in the day studios insured their actresses with million dollar policy for their legs and other body parts. Even today some actors insure themselves for multiple millions .Christopher Reeve (Superman ) fell from a horse and became paralyzed. I guess the bottom line is injuries can happen on or off set. Thankfully you were not injured in any of your outside interests ( or even on Blue). I think some restrictions are necessary to protect the talent ( and the studio to protect their investment). My question for you is: Was there ever a time in your career that you refused a role because it could've possibly inflict bodily injury to yourself? Thanks Judy, you're the best.
this kind of stuff I find very interesting. i have one question, has Hulu ever streamed the Waltons? cause I do stream Hulu alot Looking forward to your next segment. I would Love to do everything in my power to help your channel to grow. God Bless and take care Judy. ♥
I watched The Brady Bunch the other day on MeTV and saw Ike on it as a guest star. I could have seen Ike on The Brady Bunch being the boyfriend of Alice.
Hi Judy, I did think this episode was inneresting when Johnboy survived his motorcycle accident. He seemed to walk with his cane okay. Alot of things had taken place.I felt sad for Johnboy in diffrent episodes. He seemed to be the peacemaker with his siblings.
I thought the amount retained into a fund for your future would be more than 20%. Personally, I wouldn't touch any money being earned by my children as it is wholly theirs irrespective of age although I would manage their income for safekeeping until they are older but that's just me. Thank you Judy for this segment and best wishes to you from your waltonian superfan in a sunny and warm England😉
Hi Judy, sorry I missed the last part of the interview with Mr Sennensky , I was in St. Louis for mt six month vasculitis exam. The bad news is that the infusions I take for vaculitis amost completely reduces the protection of my COVID vaccine, and because I have COPD, a bout of COVID would be fatal.. The good news is that I have been on the program for five years with no recurrence so my last infusion will be this December, and by June of next year I can get my COVID vaccine and have protection. Finaly I can get out of the house. Speaking of the law protecting child actors which , as you said, is known as the Coogan law after Jackie Coogan. I find it ironic that Jackie was the grandfather of the boy who played Jeffrey in"The Waltons". As to royalties, most people don't realize that the royalties do not amout to that much for books. movies, or TV. It stands to reason that if we are all watching "The Waltons" for whatever Hallmark is paying to show them exclusively, and we can copy them for nothing, it is not putting much money in the pockets of the regular cast members. The royalty part of he business became apparent to me when a text book that my wife co-authored with six other people was picked ot for publication. Her first check was under thirty dollars and as time went on it dwindled to nothing because they don't send royalty shares under 10 dollars. i told her that for all the time she spent on writing and editing she could have made twice as much in much less time with a night at the casino. She hates gambling almost as much as Olivia. Speaking of Michael, i watched her movie 'A Christmas without Snow" the other night. It was very good but John Houseman still scares me from his days on "The Paper Chase" where he played a law professor. As I was in law school and had a professor or two just like his character, I could NOT bring myyself to watch "The Paper Chase." I have to admit he had the same effect on me as a choral director but I'm glad I watched it until the end. Have a good day and maybe by next summer I can find that you and the rest of the Walton gang are appearing somewhere close and I can meet you all again. I'd really like that.
Walton events are awesome! NorCal please! We all agree that talent should be paid. We've come a long way since Napster!! Its a digital world and AI will test us again.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Question: In the Homecoming, was David Harper wearing a wig?. It seemed that he had a lot of thick hair, but as the weekly series started it didn’t seem to be as thick.
Im not saying this to embellish but i think shows like the Waltons and little house should have more recognition and admonishment these shows where so positive and wholesome it took us from our living room into your world for 1 hour at a time.
After they created the town square with the fountain and wooden walkways, the extra buildings seemed to appear and disappear. A single episode example would be The Hot Rod. When Miss Emily is driving in circles, it appears that only the store occupies that space. Later, when Jim Bob runs into Jodie, the full town square is seen, complete with wooden walkways. We're there 2 sets? How did that work?
Do you recall Ellen Corby ever speaking of her experiences working with Lucille Ball in "I Love Lucy," or Joan Crawford in the film "Harriet Craig?" How about her great guest shot on "The Andy Griffith Show" with Don Knotts?
What was it like working with Academy Award winner Sissy Spacek? Does she still keep in touch with Richard Thomas and the cast of The Waltons? Thank you.
Sissy was great to work with and I wasn’t surprised she has gone on to such success. I imagine she and Richard have crossed paths since then, but sad to say I haven’t run across her since she worked on The Waltons.
@@judynorton2598 No problem. I don't usually ask such a " rude" question, but I figured it was 50 years ago, Judy might not mind. Thank you for doing your series on RU-vid. It is very entertaining.
