By the way, if you rip open some unused diapers you'll find a sort of powder inside. That powder is Sodium polyacrylate, it is an environmentally friendly polymer that absorbs a great amount of water, if you mix it in with the soil on top of the water shed, it could retain more water and release it slowly, keeping your soil from drying out too quickly!

The issue could be your soil. Potting soil would likely have been better. It’s the way to go for containers and raised beds. Soil from the ground doesn’t behave the same way as you’d think it would when it’s in a container/raised bed and not in the ground. It’s better to use a soil formulated for better water retention in containers and beds. Many a gardener has learned this the hard way.
@beverlyt.5526
@beverlyt.5526 Год назад
Including me!!! Even potting soil gives me trouble sometimes. You may just need to throw some miracle grow soil up there with grass seed every couple of years. Especially because Texas is so hot. The flowers will look AWESOME!!!! They should do fine even if they are old. If you ever start to get any nasty green fungi growth you don't want just sprinkle cinnamon on the area. You should grow lettuce up there and just cut it as needed for meals because it just keeps growing!!! Love Y'all 💕💕 and The Kids and Doggies 💕!!!!!!

I use a lot of Soil Moist water crystals and love what they do. If I was been doing it, I would have mixed some crystals into the bottom layer of soil and maybe just a bit more. Then add some crystals to the top half, blended in, I keep my outdoor pots from drying out as quickly, which only means I can skip a watering...one day... I also put dried, shredded leaves, mostly oak, near the lower root zones, for added water retention. You may need to water that roof, also, if you want to keep it alive down there in the heat and sometimes drought conditions. If you haven't tested those water crystals, they swell up into ice cube sized clear chunks of water. Make sure they're coveted with at least an inch of soil or they won't do you much good. After the soil settles, you may find the need to add a bit more soil or mulch...shredded leaves are good. I hope it all works out for you.

I've had great success using CLEAN disposable diapers material from the inside of it. Drop a few new disposable diapers or incontinence pads into a pail of water until they swell op with water, tear open the lining and squeeze the water absorbing inner material into the growing medium you will use. The water retention material is organic and is the same material sold in garden centers to retain moisture. I use the square foot garden suggested method of equal parts vermiculite, peat moss and compost with about 10 percent of the water retention material mixed in. It has served my purpose for roof top, and table top garden beds. Thank you for sharing the great content.

Seeds need light to germinate, so I fear that mulching is going to prevent that. If you don't get any germination, I recommend removing the mulch or just add some soil and seeds on top of it. Diapers under/within the soil will also hold onto that water you need! It's a little trick for hanging baskets, too!

with container gardening we put pipe with holes at the bottom to hold water that the plants could access by wicking up through the soil mix. you can still do the same since your garden roofs are shallow. just drill holes in the “top” side of the tubing you use and tuck them under. if you do it at dusk you wont shock them too much. just use a small irrigation tubing or drip water tubing. it will still hold

Plastic dome about 12” above the dirt will catch the evaporating water and return it to the soil, we picked up some flexible 1/4” fiberglass rods from a hobby shop and secured them to the inside of the planter box then stretched plastic over it and folded/stapled it to the inside the box too. Mid day you can see condensation rolling down the plastic into the planter but air can still flow thru since each open end, when it rains water still rolls off the plastic dome into the box going to the bottom first plus not beating new plants up. We also drilled 1/2” holes 2” from the top and the planter edge, tapped some PVC pipe in them and had a gutter (1/4 of a 2”pvc pipe cut out and a deck screw securing it to the wall below the drains with 90* fittings at the corners) for those pipes to drain excess water out and down in a bucket as to not float the soil/plants out when too much rain hit it. When it was getting dry i would just dip the water from the bucket and put it back in

Good job Spencer! It'll look and operate fantastic. What I'd recommend is starting a compost pile. I started one years ago and it has benefited all my plants, bushes, veggies, and flowers. I got a really large container meant for this job, put some dried leaves, soil, little water and then all the scraps of green and growing materials mixed in. Repeat, and keep layering the best you can but be careful to not use any grass or soil that has been chemically treated. Also I don't ever add any meat, animal feces or weeds with flowers. I know there are sites out there telling that food scraps can be added, but it will only make it stink. Also, be careful to not add too much grass/greens at one time because air needs to flow through. Without air it'll all ferment---peeeee-uuuu! Without rain I lightly water the compost once a week, and also turn the ingredients a couple of times a month. There are a LOT of advice columns out there on this subject, but it's the old formula of, KIS. I've never had a smelly compost pile, and every year I get a lot of great compost. It keeps me from adding chemicals from a bag and keeps everything very natural, safe and healthy.

...yes, I believe creating little 'water dams' with the pressure treated furring strips will most definitely aid in water retention... have been here since the start of y'all's channel/u toobs journey and have celebrated (virtually)with you on all your successes... ☮️&🌱's -tracee (LeRoy's wife) p.s. adding vermiculite and or sphagnum peat moss will help to retain moisture (longer)

I just love this entire family I have been watching since the beginning! You guys are so normal and I just look forward to seeing what's next seeing how much you guys are going to do next I sure hope you don't stop and quit doing videos. I have got to keep seeing you all on RU-vid! I love the flower bed ideas on top of the porch and how you guys just do things so cool! There is One thing I am worried about you all during bad storms I do believe in your area you should get a good storm shelter. I know that they are so very expensive but you can not put any amount on your family's life. Check them out. God bless you all and be safe.

Video too short 🥺🥺, but I love every minute of content that you post! I’m mentally thinking of many other projects that Spencer could create/tackle. However, I do agree with another poster about enclosing the underside of your home to keep harmful critters from staking up place there. I’m just fearful of any harm coming to your precious babies, your dogs, and even yourselves. Love you guys, and been here with you for the past couple of years!!
