I’m not 72, and believe you need to check your ego some….. IMO = SCR / SCI / and others promote this type of business = we have enough couch-potato/ YT influence / wanna be “capitalist” in our country HUNGRY to make money at ANY cost 👎🏻. Though I’m not your father, my advice is develop a REAL skill set and sell “cards” as a means to subsidize your income NOT as a primary source of income = dangerous approach unless you have NO MORALS 🍻

Probably your best video yet, SCV. Your tuition is paid and in return you’ve elevated the game with your maturity, your experiences, and now your teachings. You’re making a living out of selling cards full-time. You’re living “The Dream”, and like all dreams there are also nightmares. Your example to the community is positive in the sense that you know how to handle the stress, you get up and do it all over again! One❤️

Inspiring story. Just have to respectfully disagree with one thing. You said that you’re not skilled, and I understand the point you were trying to make, but you are wrong about this. Dead wrong. You identified at a relatively young age a niche market that you can leverage in your own way with your own techniques, and this has brought you a good amount of money that has allowed you to make a living and continue to fund this business venture. That is skill. Legitimate skill. Maybe how you learned the skill is not the classic story, but this is an absolute skill that you taught to yourself. You are your own student. Your hustle and tenacity in the face of resistance by the people around you is admirable. Your skill is second to none. If anyone tells you differently, they haven’t heard your story. Way to go! I can’t wait to see what more you have in store…and learn from you!

I appreciate the transparency of your path in adulthood. I moved cross country to Seattle str8 outta high school from Tn. That experience was eye opening to say the least. I was fortunate enuff to get into cards heavily in 1996 at 20 years old. Back then I just hung out in shops and shows, ebay and phones were not anywhere as prevalent as they are today. Eventually I moved back to Tn just to live a simpler life. Started grading cards in 2005 ish. The extra cash from flipping/grading def made a diff. I love the valley I call home and my hobbies give me nostalgia. SCV even tho your much younger than me and followed a different path, your motivating my old azz to get back in the game! Your timing into the market was great. I made a lot of money to fund my collector habit from purchases prior to 2019. If you just got in right before 2018, you didn't have to sit on anything for very long at all. The boom was great for me, but I had cards from the early 2000's that I had sitting around that were at shocking prices. I had no choice but to sell, only because I knew the boom era was a once or twice in a lifetime opportunity to revive my collection and it has basically funded my collection for the last severaly years. That's where we differ though, you went for the business side, I took the opportunity to rebuild my collection the way was best for me. Great story.

Related but unrelated. I used to go to a local flea market indoor vendor for cards. The guy always gave me great deals. Sometimes as much as 50% off handfuls I would buy. He was an old retired guy in his 70s that used to have a brick and mortar card shop a long time ago. One time at the very beginning of the collector's boom I went to visit him. I asked him if he noticed more customers lately. He said business had been great. I told him that I thought his entire inventory needs to be re-priced. He had a lot of nice stuff. He looked at me like I was crazy. I got a Scottie Pippen Topps Generations refractor and a mint and centered 1987 Fleer Hakeem Olajuwon that day for $16 and flipped them later that week for $150. The next time I went to visit the vendor, all of his prices were jacked up through the roof compared to his normal prices. I think he did really good for a couple years. Probably helped out quite a bit for his retirement. Only problem is now his prices are still set to the high end while most cards have come way back down to Earth.

Although I think this whole strategy ends up in a beautiful disaster (not hate, just an opinion, and it could be very wrong), this was the first video of yours I thought was valuable for others to watch. Simply sharing a journey and being open about ups and downs in life and the hustle it takes to make any venture successful was refreshing. No need to front or act bad ass, cool or hard... juat be real. You're on a journey. Keep doing you. You're 22 and they'll be many more ups and downs, but this was the first video of yours where I actually believed you have a vision and focus on your future and it probably exisits somewhere beyond cards in the long run. Keep doing you, just be sure to explore risk exposure, risk mitigation and cash flow as those are the killers of most small business ventures. Best of luck and I wish you success in whaever you do. I, too, went from sleeping on the beach in Cali with no home when i was 19 to now being a successful business professional that lives comfortably. Its hars to rise up from nothing and gridning, hustling and wanting it more than the next guy are the key. You've figured that out, and that's half the battle.
@SCVSportsCards
@SCVSportsCards 2 месяца назад
Would love to hear you elaborate. I have room to try and fail just need to be decisive and all in. Appreciate you though for taking the time to write. Curious what you see as the negative though and there being a beautiful disaster.
@1CentSportsCards
@1CentSportsCards 2 месяца назад
@SCVSportsCards So my thinking is with risk exposure and the lack of mitigation in the industry of collectibles. Go back 30 years. There were tens and thousands of people buying and selling cards. Everyone was making money. Then it just collapsed. Card values went to nothing. People say overprinting caused it a d it was because there were millions of cards. That's true to an extent. But the reality is the economics behind cards was just as much to blame. You need buyers to sell. People got fed up with the overprinting. They got fed up with the shorty product and designs. Basically, demand stopped. At that point those with heavy investments and over exposure and high risk got burned hardest. Only those who really mitigated risk survived. There's a ton of similarity to the two markets right now. Risk mitigation and limiting your financial exposure (especially in the ultra modern market where you play) will allow you to weather a potential crash where these #/10 autos and RPA etc tank. I'm not saying what you're doing is flawed. It's just economics and even your own story shows you've been exposed to the ups and downs of a fluctuating market. 2021-22 was the outlier. It's not happening again anytime soon. Fanatics is copying the plan laid out in the 80s just with the spin of a numbered card. But too many collectors are getting fed up with antics, gimmicks, long odds, etc. and there's a tipping point to that. Once you hit that tipping point, it all comes down... fast. And those exposed get wiped out the worse. Again, not saying that's your future. I don't wish that upon you. I'm just saying, risk mitigation and cash flow are extremely important in a business venture. Risk kills cash flow and cash flow (or lack there of) equals bankruptcy for even large companies. It decimates sole proprietorships and small LLCs.
@SCVSportsCards
@SCVSportsCards 2 месяца назад
@@1CentSportsCards completely agree. I want to do something outside of cards. It’s absolutely happening again to an extent
@1CentSportsCards
@1CentSportsCards 2 месяца назад
@@SCVSportsCardsall of what I've said... don't let it take away from the fact you've done a lot of things right. You've had success and most never get that taste. You've pushed the negative aside (even with family) and forged forward. You should be applauded for that and feel empowered by that. Nows is when you need to get "savvy." How to build on the success in a strategic way. I belive you'll always be connected to the collectibles market but your drive for the next venture will probably he even more fruitful. Be OK with being uncomfortable. But always have risk and the mitigation of risk at your forefront of your strategy. Good luck and keep your drive to succeed in the face of opposition alive. I applaud your story so far. It's never easy. It never will be.

Valencia/Hart/Saugus/Canyon Country high school? Where did you buy cards out there? Way older so not sure of all the high schools but I’m from Chatsworth went to Chatsworth but way older. Only shop I bought at was Baseball Card Company in Granada Hills RIP 2015 or 2016? Good friend lived out there kids went to Valencia Maddison, Billy, Allie Shipman. Funny Maddison and Allie both went to Tennessee played softball for them, Billy went to SLO played football. They all moved to Knoxville still there.

A good way to describe you is young ridged dude. it helped you get to where you are now, but we’re shaped by ideas in the current times and not like old ridged dude that keeps subscribing to ideas from 20-30 years ago that don’t work or aren’t as effective today. So do what you can to monetize your new influencer status. So don’t be so ridged where you don’t capitalize on it. And miss out on potential money like the Josh Allen card. So if you have to sell out a little bit to make money, do it. Don’t completely change who you are because people are here because you don’t bullshit people. Maybe you get some sponsorship or hit some algorithm boost that catapults your channel. And if I were you I would hit the national and or fanatics convention and there could be business opportunities and you may end up liking some of these other creators and see they are playing characters, and the dude when the camera is off ain’t that bad. And It seems you are becoming known in the industry and old ridged dudes seem to respect you and I think you would get a lot of love and might find some money making opportunities. Who the fuck knows the ceo of fanatics and their team seem to be monitoring all the influencers in the industry and have fantastic somehow work with you because they want younger people getting into the hobby and currently it’s old ridged dude as the face of the hobby. So don’t just pigeon hole yourself into the buying raw slabbing and selling. There is billions in this industry and get as much as you can. Get rich or die trying

Appreciate you thanks for the donation. Yeah I mean no one has offered but money talks and morals for everyone are flexible when it comes to money. Just a fact, nothing can stop it. But yeah it would take the right approach offer and opportunity for sure. I love the industry and want to help it so much even if it’s for free on here

I would rather be lucky than good sounds like you had a bunch of luck but to your credit when you take risk and put the effort in u get way more breaks and good things happen. Everyone has regrets I own a masonry company but I should of got my realtor license at the same time became a broker and built houses can’t win them all lol

Not really. I was in this industry doing fine before it boomed and I’ve turned in fine performances since it’s come down. But whatever you want to think, “luck” , all good

You forced me to watch this since my Miami heat are down 30. Good to see your 60 min episode. Most people are crippled by change and fear but you figured life early and my guess from growing up hard. Always improve on things and be less of an addict to American life and foods and apps. And you should be fine. Being addicted to working out or diet or business is good. Too easy to just be mediocre. ❤
