To me its a metaphor for the war on drugs, everyone (well most people) is trying to help, but because of a lack of real communication and teamwork, is just pushing against each other
exactly. its a lot like the scene between Cheese McNulty and Bunk when they're talking about "dog" haha. everyone assumes the other knows what they're talking about. then at the end they realise they've all been completely stupid
@chavedappelle I think this scene symbolizes taking two groups (the detectives and the suits) expending tremendous energies to accomplish a goal (reduce crime), yet they are coming at it in conflicting directions (long term via wire vs. short term rips/"stats"), and in doing so, their efforts negate one another and in effect they frustratingly accomplish nothing (crime ensues).
@pockmarkedbuttocks herc and daniels are pulling the desk in, but mcnulty and carver are also pulling the desk but in the opposite direction. herc never said which he needed them to do, so they assumed to pull and were canceling each other out.lol
that's the point tho he is a big-physical-muscly-tough-cop guy and he just goes in there without thinking. Herc, being the same way, doesn't bother to communicate the problem everyone else joins in without knowing what the problem is, and everyone assumes everyone else (including themselves) knows what they're doing they're too busy physically labouring under that assumption to use their minds-to realise what the problem is, communicate it, and try to solve it
@Sneezlebob because one thought they were taking it out the room so he pushed forward and the other thought they putting it in the room so he pushed forward so thats why it didnt move
What I want to know is how they expected the desk to fit through the door with the legs attached. How they even got it into the door with the legs on is totally beyond me.
Lester was the Smartest Character on the show, The smartest one in the whole Squad Lester discovered bodies in the vacant houses, solved murders, he found Avon Barksdale Photo for them, he got the Phone Number from the Crack house wall He was NATURAL POLICE.
@thesuperJFJ - One side is pushing it one way, to get it in, the other pushing the other way, to get it out...in other words, they are pushing against one another and are therefore not moving it. Many have interpreted this scene as symbolic of the police's plight, that is, two sides trying to accomplish something but going at it in conflicting ways and therefore not accomplishing anything.
No, what I'm saying is that he looks to be pulling first, then probably pushing from the other side. So what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter what side he's on, what matters is what way he thought the desk should go :)
It's funny, this is the only scene in the entire series that didn't have any effect on the plot in any way. This and the first scene of the first episode.
chavedappelle this has everything to do with the plot. It’s a subtle metaphor. Everybody jumping in going balls to the wall, and the lack of communication means they get nothing accomplished. It’s a metaphor for the war on drugs. Go back and watch the series with this mentality, you’ll see everything in a whole new light.
