It's crazy how Mcnulty sees this assignment as a bad gig. Here in Florida its almost impossible to get a transfer to the marine unit for the sheriff's office . You'd have to save the mayor's life and even so , you may just get offered next available slot lol
@@DuncanUdaho67 im not saying that's what he get ..he don't but he was looking at lester for being a hump...but now he see what that nigga mean..police and politics are complete shit...politicians are paid off ..goverment officials ..they want a certain number of drugs to come in ...they want the drugs in thr city...the hunger of money
Pulling floaters and writing fishing tickets is a shit gig for him. I bet in Florida you can make good busts on the water, drug traffic and illegals and such.
Love the metaphor here. The boat has stopped moving, but the rich could care less when they're partying. Its location near the shipping yard proves this too. Loud sounds of partying as the harbor outside dies.
So great that the boat is called Capital Gains and that it's the working man that has to pull the weight of their dead ship that's doing nothing, providing no service, just getting in the way of the shipping channel, in the middle of all that crumbling industry.
That's actually why I never liked this scene. For a show that examines multiple variables and gray areas, this scene was a little too on the nose for me. It felt preachy.
@@Pilkie101 yeah this is something those without a fire can't understand. they can never be satisfied just counting down to pay day. no matter how cushy.
mcnulty might not be in the top 10 of the show, maybe not even top 5 cops. He was just the good guy white hero. At least Kima gave us good Leasbian scenes. Mcnulty just screwed everyone over and the plot gave him immunity.
Here in germany you call this "Strukturwandel", which simply means "change of eonomic structure". Unfortunately in cities like Baltimore you didnt had a "change" but just a "loss of structure"
The Rich and powerful floating on a broken down yacht named "Captial Gains" around a crumbling Port and City economy and then use the police to their own benefit and thus the little guy to bail them out....taking and getting what they feel entitled to.
when in reality the rich *business* people are taxed to death for their success in a world of envious mobsters who want to soak em for it. everyone benefits from the products of the entrepreneur. Extremely thankful for the products and services that make our lives better.
@@flyingpigproductions9706 hahahhahahah, in what world u live in?! i hope they r paying u good for spilling this bullshit, because if u really bealive in what u said here u need professional help asap.
Season 2 with context is very great. But frustrating if you're not from the area in short the docks built Baltimore. And if the docks fail Baltimore fails. It answered a short question of why don't these criminals get jobs. There are no jobs have been for Generations.
Well, yes and no. That works on the assumption that Baltimore was the only city in the world that depended on its shipyards. Belfast, Liverpool, Glasgow etc all depended on their ship yards and they died off well before that of Baltimore, so the context should be there for other cities. Long and the short of it, the series portrayed the death of the docks perfectly and conveyed the real sense of loss that was felt by many in trades including linen and mining.
That McNulty... he knows how to play the game.. Real Police like him wants to be hands on in the thick of it, not being bored on the waterways.. Great metaphor with this scene: Crumbling docklands, Steelworks etc vs Decadent Rich folks who could care less about where they are & what's happening around them - Its All in the Game Yo!..
They may seem like it but these aren’t throwaway scene at all. This scene introduces us to what jimmy mcnulty is now doing in the second season, at the same time introduces the general setting/environment of the port and canal, and it introduces us to the general theme of the second season. It’s like a thesis statement of the season and they mix it in so well that it feels like a random, average scene.
The wire is the only cop show that doesn’t make cops the hero. That’s why it’s so good. It shows the true corruption, numbers games and personalities. This show is top 3 all time if not the best ever
For a lot of us, we’re just like Mcnulty’s partner where we just want a cushy gig to get a paycheck and ride things on the smooth path. Nothing wrong with the Marine unit at all. Not everyone wants to save the world and a good portion of folks understand they aren’t cut out for a certain kind of path.
Though if you're sensitive to odors (not just diesel fumes to worry about -- harbor and factory emissions can be very rank), motion sickness, and the frigid temperatures on winter nights, then it would be hellish gig.
It wasn't a bribe in the legal, traditional sense. There weren't any laws being broken and no intent to do same. Just a smooth favor asked for and granted. Jimmy and his boat partner wouldn't have gotten jammed up over it by IAB and such. Everything's not always a situation, like Martens said on NYPD Blue and he was in the rat squad.
I would imagine it's pretty common, especially in working class areas...I remember when my dad's factory closed down and when the first company I worked for sold off, and when it finally shut down.
It was life changing. Anywhere that’s been affected as such will have that. Locally, Waterloo, IA remembers all too well when John Deere laid hundreds off in the eighties
I'm with the majority on the boat assignment. Then again I'm a boater and in Miami. But McNulty is what they call "real police" and prefers to be solving actual crimes. Not motoring around the waterways being board. LOL.
Yes but you accomplish very little. People like mcnulty want to have big cases under their belt, want to put away high value targets, and want the respect/ notoriety/ recognition that comes with assignments in other cases found outside of riding a boat. I think for young up and comers who are eager to make their own stamp in life, the marine unit is not the way to go. For folks looking to retire, or folks looking for an easy gig to collect s check, the marine unit is where it’s at.
Man you ain’t kidding, the Marine Unit where I work is about as close to heaven you can get in a blue shirt. I don’t have the clout for a spot on a boat so I’m stuck pushing a beat for the next 17
He ain't getting shit but freezing balls ...while another dope dealer has taken the place of marlo...the higher ups want all the cops who give a shit to do clerical jobs as a policeman..he mite be making money but he ain't making a difference ..and he don't like that damn boat..he rather be in the streets cracking down on dope and murders. Real life shit its sad
I don't remember the audio at the end of that scene being so odd. The shot of Jimmy on the police boat with the audio of the party sounding like it's on the police boat too... weird.
Wouldn't mind a job like that as a punishment. Far less likely to be killed by a drug dealer out on the boat, and the odd inconsequential bribe for something you'd likely have done for free if they'd only asked.
I’ve done a job like this in the security sector and let me tell you, it’s a sweet gig. Clock in, get your area situated with your setup of snacks, drinks, tv, radio, movies and video games, and just ride it out until quitting time. But it’s not fulfilling at all. It’s cushy but if you want to do more and accomplish other things, like mcnulty, this isn’t the place for this kinds of folks.
@@JULYXXIV and then he blew it by living up to the Peter Principle in a truly disastrous manner (poor Randy, I like many fans hated that Herc ended up doing even better for himself when the show ended).
Naaa he used to look at lester freemon a real natural cop as a hump..cuz he built small furniture set toys like u see on Instagram pages.which was stated he made more money doing that then police work ..lester was a natural cop who was in homicides ..and got sent to pawn shop patrol for getting to serious about his job..he told mcnulty(when they ask u where u want to go..dont say shit ..😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He’s real police. He had pride in his abilities which go to waste there. Many of us don’t simply want to collect a check we choose a career that interests us and we are particularly good at. He is the type who could make a lot more money doing something else but chose that because of passion
It’s a nice job if you want to stand around not doing much and collect s check. Some folks would rather do more on other assignments, like catch high-value targets and solve cases that have some level of impact on society.
@@thankfulblessed3043 That line about always telling them you want to be assigned somewhere you HATE is so true irl. I've dodged some real turds taking that advise ..
Id bet you that's part of the punishment: For 2 months or so Mcnulty had to learn boating and take a lot of shit for messing things up all the time. Being reassigned isn't just a layoff, you also become a new employee all over again.
If Jimmy had made it to the summer he wouldn't have ever gotten off that boat. Way too much tail and booze on the water for him not to start liking it.
This is hardly a bribe. No wrongdoing. Just getting paid for his time. That guy prob makes one call and they end up doing the same thing for zero money- cigars anyway.
Lester freemon told that boi 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love ogs i love knowledge i don't judge i ask and listen and watch game bw givn..lester told that boi if they ask u where u want to go ..don't say shit..😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂..
They could have made this scene THAT much better if Rawls or Burrell had been on board and McNulty ran into one of them. They see him and just kind of chuckle and then turn and walk away.
They sent the Imposter by last Saturday to pretend to be me and steal more money how is this allowed to be done at sha why isn't there any cameras why isn't anyone stopping this person? I only occasionally talk to people in my room and I never hang out with people at Sha. These people know my family or someone who is giving them money to give to me and someone we'll pretend to be me and accept this money and act a fool
