Why didn't he do it sooner tho? That's the real question if it was loyalty or was he just waiting on everybody else to kill each other or get locked up to make his move because he wouldn't have much competition then.... so was it really loyalty or just smart planning?? Maybe a little bit of both I think
What makes it hit harder is this situation is also a direct replica of the reason we(USA) were at war during that time(Iraq). All based on lies and standing on those lies.
Slim Charles played his card right and became the new Prop Joe in the end, he's the perfect definition of a real street soldier.......loyal, wise, brave, and only pulls the trigger if necessary he survived off of his words and reputation
@@laphonz nah. I think new Prop is appropriate. He will step aside and make way for Avon when he is released after completing his initial sentence. He will sit back and enjoy the benefit without the exposure.
@@GuardianAngel.. the point is the streets is gonna shoot and seek truth later point of staying out of it if u don't see it like that u gotta be ready to die
Remember when Marlo offered a certain position to Slim at the Co Op meeting before he shut the Co Op down?? Slim didn’t take it mostly because he was feeling out Cheese who he assumed was responsible for Prop Joe’s death (which was true) and when he got confirmation, he definitely knew he couldn’t trust him because if that guy would double cross his own uncle, then he’d flip on anyone who got in the way of his ambitions. Also he wanted to stay off Marlo’s radar because most people who came up on Marlo’s radar ended up dead. And he might’ve had a sense that Marlo was gonna fall soon because of his ruthlessness and bloodlust for power, that’s inevitably gonna being down the authorities and when the shit goes down, you don’t want to be a person of interest. You wanna be back in the cut, out of the spotlight so you can pick up the pieces and move on if and when the hammer comes down.
Exactly, Slim was the smartest to me besides Lester on the Wire. Both of them are just aware of their surroundings and their situations and they learn to adapt quick. I kinda have a tough take on Prop Joe but imma just save that for another time
@@Mason42192 Intelligent how? You mean by getting advice from Joe that he really didn’t even care about it. Lol of course you gonna listen to someone’s knowledge if it’s gonna benefit you but Marlo could’ve cared less. Marlo isn’t a smart man at all. He wasn’t smart about the bodies being in vacants because people are NOSY. Slim, Avon, Joe, hell even the police officers wouldn’t even had did what Marlo did because it’s stupid. Marlo was just killing people just cause and eventually it caught up to him. That’s not smart, just because he got out the game and is alive doesn’t mean he should be up there with Slim and Lester. He could’ve got killed by Avon’s crew, Omar and if Joe was smart enough, he could’ve killed Marlo too. If anything Marlo was the luckiest character on the Wire hands down especially being blessed with a killer like Chris
@@treypowell567 you sound crazy if Marlo is stupid like you said he would be dead or in jail Marlo was using pop joe to get close to the connect which is smart he used cheese to set his uncle up another smart move the list goes on and on i respected your point of view even though I didn't agree with it....you think slim was the smartest on the show is a joke he was a straight crash dummy for avon look at the two shootings he had on season 3 in you say Marlo was mostly luck ?good joke slim got caught lacking when Omar was about to blow his head off but he is so smart get real you have to be some little kid
@@treypowell567 Without Chris, Snoop and Monk, Marlo would have been killed, and out of the game ALOT sooner than he was. Which was an important lesson about leadership: the leader is ONLY as good as the people surrounding him, buoying him up. Same goes for Carcetti, with Norman on HIS team.
"Most street guys will die in the streets with their sneakers on, not peacefully in the bed". Strong statement!! Paul Castellano comes to mind. He died right in the streets of NYC. The streets he ran his whole life until he became boss and was taken out over greed.
@@princegobi5992 yea, I'm sure... Castellano was caught on FBI tapes pretty much ordering John and his whole crews to be killed. The heroin, yea, but more for holding out on his cut lol. So I'd say more Paul's greed LMAO
Gotti and his crew were taped talking about how clueless Castellano was about the streets, they looked at him like an isolated mollycoddled guy because he wasn't like them and didn't conduct business the "Mafia" way. He only became boss because Carlo Gambino was his cousin and picked him to be his successor. It should be on his Wikipedia page
10:56 Always felt this way, I just say it a little differently and expand it to be more holistic: "I don't want to hear any complaining from 'might makes right' people when it's their turn"
I don't comment much on videos but your videos are of the absolute highest quality - people like you are a massive credit to RU-vid and Content Creation in general, keep it up and thank you for all your videos so far. Can't wait to watch this one
Always dug Slim Charles. I seriously appreciated your intelligent vs smart observation. A wise man (my biological father- who I only got to know a little) once told me that intelligence is the only virtue that means nothing by itself. Someone can make it on determination alone, good looks, ambition, cunning etc. But intelligence all by itself don't mean sheeeeet. As an intelligent guy whose done some real dumb shit, I know this from painful experience. Smart's better. I really like your videos.✌
I can never get tired of these! Your assessments are always on point! I used to have all these same assessments when I would watch the wire. When the wire first came out, I was probably about 21. It’s even more dope to see how much deeper I assess it at age 40. I applaud your hard work and talent! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽✊🏽
This video is so well done. I love the way you break this down. Slim is an awesome character and he really doesn't get the respect he deserves. He is very smart and loyal as well. I love at the end one he puts one in Cheese's head and says "That was for Joe" it showed a lot about his loyalty and it also showed he knew Cheese was gonna be in the way and how erratic he was so getting rid of him served two purposes, respect for Joe who didn't deserve to go out the way he did and prevented problems that were easy to foresee in the future. Slim always stood tall and was a very underrated character.
True ambition will not be discouraged by consequences or repercussions, most ambitious people are gamblers willing to bet on they self!!! Bro that was the dopest shit I’ve heard in a while … 🔥🔥💯💯
@@fideletamo4292 The writers knew what they were doing, but a lot of people analyze this like it was reality. Avon should have been got by Charles. He survived b/c of a few minutes/seconds, which he had no control over. Two red lights for the cops (I know, they don't stop for cops) but say, one more red light on the DA's drive to get the warrant and Marlo would have been gone. Since he 'won' lots of people like to point out 'If string was so smart, why was he dead, Marlo was smarter than Avon" and none of that is really true. Marlo should have been both in jail and or dead if he managed to beat the other. Chris and Snoop were terrors but after killing joe and the Price of the Brick going up - putting cheese in charge, at least two people would have gotten froggy and wanted to kill him. The idea the connect would just dry up is 50/50 - the greeks would have found someone to sell to in B-More and there are only so many buyers. Many people were just lucky or unlucky. The classic case IMHO being Levy telling Orlando - "You wanted to be in the game, you're in the game" - some people get extra lucky, some get extra unlucky. Orlando was stupid, greedy and unlucky. Back to your point, Avon had heart, and street smarts, and real smarts. He wasn't no suit wearing business man, but he understood business.
Been fucking waiting for this! Slim Charles reminded me of myself I've always stayed down even though conflicted but pushed the line I chose. Always been my favorite character along with Chris.
Slim will definitely last longer than Marlo. Like you said, he was smart. He never talked on phones. He never got caught by police. The police didn't even know his name or even knew of him. His picture was never on any of their investigation boards. He even had a code name if other people were speaking of him on the phones. Tall man
NEW SUB! This is like sitting through a psychology course at a university.... I literally just watched the wire series again for the 5th time and found this channel LOVE IT
You hit it straight on the head. Slim Charles is a real Student of the game. You could see the evolution of his character as he fell under the teachings of Avon, Stringer, and Prop Joe. He now will learn from Vondas and “The Greek”. If or when he makes his final play, I see him going out quietly but wealthy. Not to suggest that crime would pay for him.
Slim Charles responding "that's some assassination shit" was always my favorite line of the wire, It's not only funny because of how he says it but very wise of him to know you can't kill a Senator and not get caught instantly. Slim never got greedy so I'm sure he took advantage of the new position he was in.
Slim is one of my favorite (of many) characters on this show. It's too bad we had to wait until Season 3 for him to appear, but this is testimony to the excellent pacing of the writers and the commitment to the story rather than any one character. Kudos to Anwan Glover for owning the character of Slim.
Finally! We need this regularly bro lol. Slim Charles is definitely a top 3 character and maybe the most underrated. Respected by all even Omar let him slide because he saw he was ready to die after being bested. A pawn that became a Queen
Your content is absolutely stellar, you bring such an original feel to this gem of a show. I have nothing but love for your frequent uploads especially considering you don’t get paid primarily from this avenue as you said in some video. I would highly encourage you to setup a patron if you don’t have it or if you do promote it as I’m sure people like myself would donate to you to support you for your content 👍
Slim stayed true to himself nd stayed true to the game nd played his cards right all the way to the end especially killing cheese for joe r/s even when Omar was bout to kill him he accept what was bout to come and still stay true to everything
I just found your channel. I been binge watching your content. The way you break down your analysis is severely underrated. Even though you are speaking about a series. You relate it to real life situations. Never change. And keep on keeping on. Bless you My Brother. Keep spitting them facts and opinions. I wish everyone in the world could hear what I been hearing on your videos. You should be a psychologist. You understand a lot of people's minds. And we can all relate. Good work. Thank you.
i love how Slim Charles best lines are like repeating the same thing. “that’s the thing about war, once you in it, you in it” and “that’s the thing about the old days, they the old days” 😂
"If it's a lie, then we fight on that lie. But we gotta fight." It's ironic that you released this video today. I was just thinking about Slim Charles and that scene yesterday.
He definitely will last longer than Marlo being the fact he was a soldier at heart he still had street smarts and was very calculated he knew he could take the street corners cause Avon was locked plus he he all of Prop Joe motion along with the “Greek” connection only thing I see stopping Slim Charles was the police
Slim would have had a long career unless another Marlo type came up I think. He had that good mix of being a relationships man with a reasonably high emotional intelligence like Prop Joe, knew his limits and didn't make too many enemies considering his line of work. Even Marlo seemed like he had respect for Slim. He would have been the "dependable man" like the Greeks liked. Regarding him and Fat Face Rick. I never felt like Rick was that volatile a kingpin. I think Rick would have been happy making money on housing condo flips to actually roll the dice with taking the crown for himself. Even if Rick did take the crown I could never see him keep it.
ladies and gentlemen we are here for Sunday service 🙏. I cant tell yall how much ive been waiting on this one. who else could breakdown my favorite character but the big homie . Salute to u. u proving that even if you fallback for a min your videos and input are THAT much impactful on us
Another banger first of all. Secondly, I think Slim Charles will be the heart behind FFR's operations as he always has been. Rick is no dummy with getting money but he seems like he definitely needs a Slim Charles.
That smart vs intelligent line was 🔥🔥🔥your smartness and intelligence is always on high display. I am honored to be from the same city that you are from. I wasn't as deep in the hood as you, but those lessons help and guide me to this day in any world/realm. I wish other youths in our city would realize the wealth of knowledge/lessons that are in them streets and use them to build out of the streets. Peace to you great leader!!!
Great video. Slim was very smart and knew how to play the game right. He never once (even when asked by Marlo) displayed any motives to want to be the top guy or show traits of being power hungry. My guess is he lasted a long time in top since his final teacher was Prop Joe. Also being a former soldier, he probably took great care of the people who eventually were under him.
@@evanjames3011 i don't think so, i think he didn't Care about normal life, and normal people were certainly stupid as hell to someone like him..he could have been a great scientist but even that wasn't his goal i think..
I had to pause the video to give you your flowers. I love your perception of this series cause I’m Fam of it highly. I’m actually about to rewatch it for some inspiration for a project. But I heard no fable from a king yet so far since I started watching. Very interesting and appreciate the time u took to make this. Just subscribed to see what else you got💯
The thing I like & respect Slim Charles is he's they type to admit that he don't know, to many times people who don't know something don't have the humility to take the information, Slim picked up the good moves & also picked up the mistakes from Avon Stringer & Prop Joe. That characteristics along with the morale ethics & being head strong he already possessed is some of the reasons why he ended up at the table with the Greeks. Salute to you ahki for picking up Slim Charles mind frame. Also I'm starting to see some channels now doing The Wire analysis but they don't understand the streets nor understand the how street dudes think & they totally misunderstand the characters lol they not you bro please keep this shit going we need you in these RU-vid streets
I enjoyed watching your video. It's refreshing on how you broke down the difference between being smart vs being intelligent. Slim having longevity more than Marlo is a possibility. Slim is smart, observing and straightforward.
Too many gems here, the difference between smart and intellect, the simple truth that most of street guys won't end like slim, the fact that street killers shouldn't beg for their lives.. I see slim Charles as a man who perfectly understands the game and its consequences..a soldier with a Brain who could question orders like Michael, who had a code like Avon, who accepted his death and knew when a War was important..
Thanks 4 this video. Slim Charles was the last man standing. Period. The KING stays the King. Michael, Curry were knights. Prop Joe was a Kings Bishop.
Great video as always, hope you and your loved ones are having a safe and happy 2022! Slim Charles is probably my favorite character in the wire, I think partly, due to how ironic his whole arc is. Basically one of the only people that has a sense of honor and a set of principles, and not only sticks to them, but is rewarded for it in the end. Which, considering how ruthless and back-stabby the "game" is (which usually "rewards" such behavior (one could probably make a good argument that the only people in the wire that get any kind of good/ok ending are those who had principles and stuck to them no matter what) ) shows how utterly "social" the "game" is as well. Cause while the ruthless and the duplicitous may gain power, they won't gain loyalty and respect, which you need to maintain power long-term. You may be able to use fear to keep people in line for a time, but if any weakness is sensed, people will abandon you for someone like Slim Charles, who you know will have your back (unlike someone like cheese, who would murder his own kin for power, a power which collapsed almost immediately). I think Slim will be able to maintain stability for his rule for awhile, especially since he saw what worked and what didn't with the men he served under. Though I think rat faced rick would take more of the "face" role while slim handled what he did best, i.e. top soldier and advisor.
This here is my brother always on point with the info. You can learn a lot from these younger generation, and that's my point. If we're not doing very well in life we're not that smart.
There is a Slim Charles in every mobb he is normally the one that speaks the less he sits back in the cut and watches everything from time to time he tries to give advice but it goes in one ear and out the other so in the end when everything goes left he is the one that goes RIGHT💯
Really think you should reconsider doing power videos just seasons 1-3, even the later season that made a decline, you could definitely discuss how the characters themselves had a decrease in depth and opposed to the early seasons
@@AMansWorldPodcast after Milan got killed it was over. They did do right by his character either dude jus got a good 4-5 episodes, just to be replaced by people with less meaning and couldn’t really shape the show the way he could’ve.
Slim was one of my top 3 favorite characters. He had so many redeeming qualities. He was personable yet fierce, so the corner boys respected him. He displayed humility after he thought he made the mistake on shooting Fruit. He knew when and how to maneuver. Because of his outgoing nature, he wasn't seen as cold blooded like Snoop and Chris. They'd never be in a position of leadership. Slim above everyone else, imo, was the most well rounded. He wasn't power hungry in the game, adapted as it changed, and was loyal to those who were loyal to him. When he murked Cheese, he knew he wouldn't get push back from the coalition because Cheese deserved it in everyone's mind. To me The Wire is a business course. And Slim represents those who are aware, smart, and educated enough to know when and how to move up the ladder. Slim was so well liked and respected, very few would've objected to where he was in the end.
He didn’t think he made a mistake not shooting Fruit, he was just covering for Cutty who had the shot and didn’t take it. In a way that’s actually more honorable taking the blame for something that was Cutty’s fault to protect a guy he thought was a good soldier.
@@MrRyan-wu4jx I've read this. But I've seen that episode so many times. I think Slim genuinely though he made the mistake. I don't think he was standing up for Cutty. He thought he made a mistake, and owned it. He looked just as shocked when Cutty threw it in. That's what I love about this show. So many interpretations.
@@NoNo-ng9sl Cutty told Slim right on the spot why he didn’t take the shot. By the time they went to explain it to Avon Slim knew what went wrong but wanted to cover for Cutty.
First off, AWESOME analysis on smart vs intelligence!! I been telling people that for years. Second, Slim Charles is going to last way longer Marlo and have the humility to hand the streets back over to Avon when he get out, if Avon even wants it back. Love this show
I'm glad to know sir. Here's a question I have for you. Are you familiar with Clint Eastwood's western film Unforgiven? If you are, I'd be curious to know your opinion on "Little" Bill Daggett's self-assesment that he doesn't deserve to die the way that William Munny is about to kill him (noting that he doesn't actually say he doesn't deserve to die at all but rather that he doesn't deserve to die the way he's about to). And also on Munny's response "Deserve's got nothing to do with it," which was quoted word for word by Snoop Pearson towards the end of The Wire.
Entire video is amazing as always brother. The knowledge you drop from 11:00 to 12:00 about murderers begging for their lives when it is their turn. Man i swear in every tv show or movie when that happens I think the same thing. It is infuriating because they act like they have no idea why anyone would want to cause them any harm
David Chase needs to bring this thing back. There is a whole new storyline waiting to happen. Avon should be out if jail by now, Marlo will get back in the game, Slim is big enough to war with both of them and even McNulty can come out of where ever sunset he went to. It can work 👌
Binge watched your Wire insights and I’ve got to say, not only do you offer up incredible observations and understanding of the characters, but you communicate the ideas so clearly and effectively. Keep up the amazing work!
The last time we see Slim and Marlo both tells me that neither of them lives much longer past the events of the last episode. Like you said Marlo was all about wearing the crown and even though in actuality he was a boss he didn't have a ton of respect on the street level and that eats him up. Not only did Omar drag his name thru the mud in the streets before he died but when Marlo leaves the party and approaches the dudes on the street they were talking about Omar (who's legend only grew after death) and they didn't even know who Marlo was because he spent so much time ruling from the shadows. His shooters (Chris and Snoop's) name rang bells but Marlo was still struggling to get that recognition he wanted. And from the looks of things he was gonna die tryna get it. As far as Slim, when he kills Cheese it's the first time we see him act out of emotion without fully weighing or caring about the consequences. Not only did he kill a man in front of dozens of witnesses but he messed up the money for the re-up. Slim was still thinking like a soldier and not a boss. He should've waited it out, rocked Cheese to sleep, got Cheese's portion of the money for the re-up and then took Cheese out in a way where he knew exactly why it was happening to him. His days were numbered anyway. Not putting the money first probably didn't make him a ton of allies among the Co-Op and as for him becoming a boss it's often way easier to Coach from the sideline than to call the plays when it all falls on you. If Slim says to himself all of the crews are shells of what they used to be and I've seen enough to know how this story ends and packs it up he lives longer than Marlo. If he stays in the game Marlo might actually outlast Slim, not by much, being that he knows what he takes to get to the highest level with your head still attached. Would've def been interesting to see how it all played out.
@Early Da Prince Dude, it's never smart to kill somebody in front of all those witnesses. I don't care who you are. I see Slim as a #2 guy. He ain't no boss. Killing Cheese the way he did proves that.
@Early Da Prince I never liked Cheese either. Cheese was a snake. He didn't have any loyalty to his Uncle at all. Cheese had to go, as they say. However, Slim used poor judgement by smokin him in front of all those witnesses. Not a boss move in my opinion. Later on when one of those cats get pinched they might turn on Slim. Slim got caught up in his emotions. Which seemed out of character for him. Seeing how "level headed" he'd been otherwise.
Slim Charles key weapon on the streets was his patience and he did everything in the book of art of war, he was that pawn that made it to end of the chessboard that bodie was talking about, after avon went down slim Charles went to prop joe side cause he knew that marlo wasn’t a man of honor and he wasn’t taking no orders from him and even though marlo offered him a large piece of the pie slim declined making it seem like he ain’t fit to be a CEO playing his position be patient cause he knew marlo wasn’t gonna run things forever cause his own ego and his way of thinking he is invincible led to his own downfall so it was only matter of time before marlo falls and his organization crumbles and it did crumble and in the end slim popped cheese not only for his betrayal of prop joe but from destroying a chance of another marlo might emerging so he killed him and in the end he became the queen piece, I have a theory that perhaps down the road avon got out and basically he still was the king and the board had sorta reset with it he new players of the game, only thing that stay the same was avon being the king because DAngelo said to bodie and Wallace that the king stays the king so in a sense avon won in the end of the wire when avon was talking to marlo he broke it down to him what he wanted to do and he finesse marlo out of the 100k and he was cool with marlo taking out prop joe cause he never like prop joe and prop joe got inside Stringer head overtime while Avon was locked up so that was Avon get back at him and Avon knew just like slim that marlo wasn’t going have longevity in the game so yeah in the end Avon won and irony is that marlo won to because he got out the game clean with a lot of money and didn’t die but in his eyes he lost because he no longer in the game and that’s reason why he came back on the block asking them 2 corner boys do they know him and they didn’t know they was ready to kill him and the 2 corner boys was talking about Omar being a legend went out in a shootout with cops, marlo don’t like that cause he was forgotten about he felt weak, Avon won in the end and Omar still won in death cause his name is remembered and also his list he had in his pocket when he died bunk saw it and it helped him eventually take marlo down
