Three women - Jane K. Sather, Cora Jane Flood, and above all, Phoebe Apperson Hearst - launched the university system for the state to international greatness. Their exemplary generosity not only physically embellished the campus at Berkeley but provided opportunities for women students and faculty that positioned it towards greater gender equity early in the thirtieth century.
