The male vocalist is Canadian Rory Dodd. He worked with songwriter Jim Steinman a lot, providing vocals for many of his songs, and also sang background vocals on some of Meatloaf’s songs that were also written by Steinman. Rory’s voice was phenomenal.

You didn’t mention Jim Steinman who wrote the song. Bonnie had an operation on her throat after her first album. This gave her voice a rasping sound, and she thought her career was over. But her next song “lost in France” was her biggest hits of the 70s.

This is seriously one of the most complex songs ever created with the distinction where every single detail is done to perfection ... the whole songs moves through so many ups and downs and quiet and big epic moments, but it all moves so fluidly .... there are so many instruments involved with the church like organs and lonely piano taking centre stage ... so much going on but every elements manage to shine and have their moments ... and, her raspy voice still manages to take centre stage while aided by that male voice giving an extra dimension of melancholic background vibes .... thats mind boggling ! One of the greatest songs ever put together, its almost miraculous ...

Jim Steinman actually wrote this for a musical called “Vampires In Love”. The musical never materialized, and the song went to Tyler. It really makes the lyrics take on a whole new meaning. It has such a broadway/operatic feel to all of it.

The musical did in fact happen under the title DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES. It played on Broadway starring Michael Crawford as the vampire. Wonderful lady, met her once when she was backstage/on set (lost in France promo shoot for TV), we chatted some, discovered we had some places in common. She was dead nervous as she was about to perform, that made her very real in my view (not all rock stars are like that). Left us both smiling and her doing a great job in front of the cameras, me being astounded in the darkness of the set, because well, that voice! She's the real deal.

The thing about this song is the DRAMA of it. It's all about the dramatic buildup and power crescendo. Bonnie's voice is absolute smoky FIRE -- but the drama? -- that's mostly due to the writing and composition. And all that credit goes to the amazing Jim Steinman! You really should Wiki Jim Steinman (RIP). He has written a TON of huge dramatic pop-rock songs for various artists over the years, most notably: this song, Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing At All", Celine Dion's "It's All coming Back to Me Now", and MOST of Meatloaf's bigger hit songs!! His big, bombastic, super-dramatic songs just couple very well with these fantastic singers.

This was HUGE my junior year of high school. For our junior/senior prom a buddy and I sat on the floor listening to it over and over again to write down the lyrics since it was the theme song. It's also one of those songs that the video play on MTV made it even greater. Jim Steinman should have got much, much more public credit for writing it. Even when he wrote the songs for the Meatloaf's album Bat Out of Hell his name was shamefully in very small print.

I loved this song and still love it.she is beautiful lady. I’m 72 yrs.old.This was my first song, I ever listened too consistentlyback in 80’s. I had found a new husband. But he didn’t come around a lot until ,we got closer feelings for each other. I asked him,did he think,we were going to the next step. I love the video.

If you want a real chuckle, check out the Literal Version of this song. A sound-alike sings a version where the lyrics exactly describe the video in all its weird glory.

You should watch the literal version. It’s hysterical.
