Why the hell did they think it a good idea to make the third gym in Hoenn or even had a electric type in the first place when there only like five eletrical type mon in the whole game I would had replaced it for a grass type instead it was dumb that there was a fire and water type gym but no grass type
Imagine putting an ice gym as the final gym in the region where not only does the player get to choose from 2 sets of starters, but also a free mega evolving fighting steel type.
You'd be right if you weren't wrong. Remind me again what that abilitie's name is in Japanese, the original language of the game? Does it have anything to do with math?
I honestly feel that if they made the lighthouse the dedicated puzzle it would work perfectly lmao. Like fill the lighthouse with steel trainers, make it so that trainers would have to go to the top to greet Amphy or bring back something from there and then shift the venue for the final battle to the Gym proper. Like Raihan's gym, but actually a puzzle and not a boring forced trainer sweep!
Poor Jasmine. She's the best girl from gen 2, a kindhearted trainer that refuses to leave her sick Pokémon to suffer even for a moment. Also the aesthetic of seemingly frail demzel that was literally in distress 5 minutes ago just to be revealed as a STEEL type specialist is just really nice. At least in her remaches she gets the Metagross she deserves.
As a huge fan of Jasmine (enough to make her my profile trainer in my Masters EX account. Mine’s proudly fully maxed out at 5/5 EX), that segment was the toughest and most painful to hear all around. Though as you said, both her rematch and PWC teams gave her a more than deserved redemption. Hopefully her DP cameos get preserved in the remakes.
I just had a thought about Vermilion gym. The reason why you have to rummage in trash is probably because Lt. Surge wants to humiliate you. It would be in character for him anyways. He's standing on the other side of the electric gate with the smuggest posture possible watching as you get filthy and frustrated (at least in Gen 1) in an effort to get to him.
The worst things about jasmine are : 1. Both her magnemites are level 30 ... thats the level magnemite evolves at 2. In pokemon stadium she uses magneton , skarmory and forretress Like ... they obviously realized their mistake in stadium so why not change it in HGSS
Yeah cause of "nostalgia" and keeping the "original" feel. Honestly? One of the reasons why gen 2 games are my least favorites is how overbearing they are with the Kanto Pokemon. This is JOHTHO I want to see fight/fight against JOHTO Pokémon. Barely ANY johto gym leader had Johto Pokémon...
@@emblemblade9245 the Sinnoh remakes convinced me of that, they clearly spent 99% of their time updating graphics and not on correcting bugs and avoiding weirdness like the snowpoint gym puzzle being soft lockable or skipable if you use the joystick movement. I had such hopes for those games to add a bunch of explorable areas to discover and make Sinnoh really come alive, and instead it was a copy paste making me question why i bought this game if i litterally already own it. I really wish they would focus on making good fun games and not cashing out nostalgia or making easy games for children they assume are braindead. (The games are getting objectively easier and not just appearing easier from us growing older and smarter)
Elesa gym fight was really nice imo. She shows the massive potential volt switch has and doesn't die to ground like other electric types. Actually required brain power and planning to win
...Which is mainly just keeping moves/abilities that prevent opponents from escaping handy like Mean Look or Shadow Tag. And making sure your pokemon can move faster than hers before they can use Volt Switch.
@@Missingno_Miner Fair enough. The only one I had a real problem with in the whole Kalos line was Wikstrom, bc of Aegislash alternating between Sacred Sword and King's Shield
@@shadowstar8619 Yeah, my only struggle in Kalos was with Siebold, and even then that was only because in my first playthrough I went out of my way(as in resetting) to use all three available fire starters for meme purposes and somehow managed to not notice that Florges was not a Grass type until it got OHKO'd by a crit waterfall from Gyarados. Only time I've lost in a kalos game other than one time where Korrina's Hawlucha RNG'd me to death with about six consecutive crits and eight total crits. Although that's more me being completely blind and way too committed to a bit rather than actual difficulty.
With Watson's gym, I had heard the fan speculation that the reason none of the gym trainers use electric types is because they aren't gym trainers. They're challengers, just like you, and you are just competing with them to see who gets to challenge Watson first.
For Bea at least it makes sense in-universe. A trainer of fighting types (and honestly trainers in general) needs to be fit and able to keep aware in difficult situations. Doing that challenge from the actual cup, without the overhead view and being subjected to all the spinning and bumping would challenge the body and I'd imagine many would end their gym challenge there if they couldn't keep up.
Imagine how many reach her for the final fight with a severe case of nausea and vertigo xD "F...F...Finally... I've... reached you... Bea... and now... prepare for..... uuugh..... *barfs*"
I remember when I just realized that in Allister's gym they're Spinning Tea Cups since they're based on Sinistea, and in Bea Gym they're Spinning Suction Cups since they're based on Clobbopus
The lacklustre puzzles in BW/B2W2 are probably done due to the gimmick of every gym leader having a job outside their gym. - Cilan, Chilli and Cress are waiters and chefs at a restaurant so their puzzle is based around a restaurant and type effectiveness. - Lenora is a Librarian so her puzzle is based around reading books - Burgh is an artist and his gym puzzles either involve a maze of honey (BW) or shooting through spiderweb mazes (B2W2) - Elesa is a model, so her puzzle in B2W2 is based around her modelling career - Clay is a miner and his puzzles inolve navigating a maze of underground tunnels - Skyla is a cargo pilot so her puzzles either involve hurrican force winds (B2W2) or flying out of cannons (BW) - Brycen is an actor, so his gym in Black and white is based around ice skating (another performance art) - Drayden is the Mayor of Opelucid city and Iris is his daughter, their gym in Black and white is based around their type specialty more than their job. and in B2W2 (When Drayden is demoted from the final gymleader to the seventh leader, the gym puzzle stayed mostly the same, naigating around atop a dragon's head. - Cheren (who replaces Lenora, but faced in place of the triplets) is a school teacher and so his gym is in the rear of the trainer's school. - Roxie (who replaces the triplets, but is in the position of Lenora) is a rockstar, heading a band. her poison type then is a reflection of america's stance on rock and roll. - Marlon (who takes Drayden's position as the final leader) is a swimmer and as a result his gym puzzle is based around navigating water.
My only problem with the Circester gym in Sword is that those really encouraging lines you read as you make progress fit Melony's matronly personality well, but I can't imagine Gordie saying those things at all. They should have changed that dialogue IMO.
I’m of the unpopular opinion that Hearthome Gym DP is actually my favorite in Sinnoh. If you’d decide to pick the wrong answers to fight more trainers for the experience, the trainers you face would know that you’re purposely getting them wrong. It’s one big joke. I mean it’s not a spectacular gym, but I like that it’s a change of pace to do something a little uncharacteristic
I'm in the same boat with you, but there's still a problem that keeps it from a good gym in my experience. It's those slow elevators and to remind you that this is DP: the slow Pokémon games.
13:17: Bea's team being completely fully evolved makes sense due to the high level of the fourth gym in SwSh, which is actually highest leveled in entire franchise. You're already expected to have a fully evolved starter by then if you're not leveling up higher than the gym leader's ace (starters are fully evolved at Lv35 and Bea's Machamp is Lv36) and there's other mons like Alcremie (Strawberry Sweet is in Hammerlocke), Toxtricity, Orbeetle, and more that are expected to be fully evolved by then too.
The whole thing also fits thematically as the third gym was established to be the one where most challengers give up or just fail, so the ones making it to the 4th must be quite tough and are met with higher expectations.
One important thing about Fantina's gym in DP/BDSP: One of her NPCs has has a Driftloon and you might easily miss that battle due to the gymn being an intelligence test. However, it is important to have this battle because Driftloon only appears at Valley Windworks on Fridays, and you need this encounter in order to get the National Dex.
The problem with the Johto gym could've been so easily solved too. Just have the gym filled with people like it would normally have and the puzzle visible, with Jasmine escorting you through. A trainer steps forward to challenge you, but Jasmine stops them, saying that you already proved yourself capable to her by helping her at the lighthouse, and that there's no need for formalities this time. Barren gym problem solved, and a nice pat on the back given to the player for a job well done. They could even include a dialogue choice where Jasmine asks you if you'd rather fight the others to warm up your team first, or if you'd like to just fight her, so that players can get that extra xp if they want it. And of course the trainers would be available to fight later if the 'no' option is selected; makes no sense to have that be a 'you missed your chance, too bad' kind of thing
The only thing about that is, in litterally any gym where you can skip the trainers they can't be fought after beating the gymleader either, so it would be weird if you could here.
The Ghost Gym should have "Not Scary, Scary, Very Scary" for its doors, and you get to the Gym Leader by going through them a number of times, Very Scary being the quickest
I figured what your reasoning would be for Olivine City's gym being the worst in Johto and it is completely justified. Game Freak really should've done better with the first steel type gym. I love Jasmine, but her gym really needs some renovating.
My Choices for Worst Gyms (Based mainly on the puzzle or battle and sometimes personal bias) Gen 1: Vermillion Gym Surge is annoying due to constant spamming of Thunder Wave or Supersonic and the gym puzzle can burn in the flames of a Volcarona Gen 2: Olivine Gym THAT was the Gym Design?! No trainers?! No puzzle?! Nothing but a path forward?! And for what? A battle with Pokémon who take forever to kill due to Thunder Wave from Magnemite and Steelix's extreme Defense and resistances?! Gen 3: Dewford Gym Ah yes, its my favorite gimmick. Its the one where you can't F**ING see! Gen 4: Snowpoint Gym Annoying ice physics + Very tedious puzzle + The snowballs respawning if you go to heal = My anger Candice is okay tho. Gen 5: ...Honestly, none of them. All of the Unova Gyms match their puzzle, Gym Leader hobby, and type specialty very well. Combined with mostly fun fights for each Gym Leader (except Elesa and maybe Lenora) make it probably the most consistent for Gyms imo Gen 6: Snowbelle Gym The perspective, especially witb 3D effects on, can be a bit confusing when rotating the blocks. Plus, the blocks can be a bit tedious to rotate. Finally, Wulfric is an absolute joke in terms of a Gym Leader Gen 8: Hammerlocke Gym WHY WEREN'T WE INSIDE THE GYM FOR THESE GYM TRAINER BATTLES?!
I think it's because the defining feature of Raihan's gym mission is precisely the fact that is the only one that happens at a different location. And a pretty important one on top of that since it's the Hammelocke vault, the place where the ancient tapestries with the legend of Galar are being preserved. It fits Raihan's theme because Dragons are known to protect treasures. And Raihan is in charge of the Hammelocke vault.
@@giboit. I personally don't mind it being in a different location. The lack of ANY PUZZLES is what makes me dislike Raihan's gym challenge. The battle is fun, but that's where the pros end. The gym trainers are so weak, and there's no fun of solving puzzles or missions before taking on the leader. It's what makes every other Galar gym SO fun for me. I had so much fun in Melony's gym for instance, mainly due to her gym being simultaneously fun and challenging to navigate. While in Raihan's challenge, you just battle in a room lmao
@@Evie0133 I had a good challenge with them though. And once again, the whole concept with Raihan's mission is supposed to relate to his dragon theme. It's simple but quite unique since the mission itself takes place on a completely different place that is yet fitting with the theme of the gym leader. Not to mention that Hammerlocke gym is also quite different as far as the story goes since it's not only a gym stadium with a completely different (external) design but also the place where the Macrocosmos power plant is located.
To be fair to Jasmine in Gen 2, steel type was a new thing, and steelix as an evolution from onix would've made a new player use water types against it, which you'd get from surfing to Cianwood for the medicine. So sunny day would've been a counter to that And it would've even encouraged a new player to think out of the box and use a fire type, and find out it was effective in the end.
Something else about the Shalour Gym is that none of the trainers (or at least Korrina) have ANYTHING to deal with the newly introduced Fairy type. Meanwhile, Bea at least had a Steel type move... on a Pokemon that is quad weak to Fairy.
@@MrKlausbaudelaire Reading comprehension is apparently not a skill of yours. The point is that Fighting types are weak to Fairy and none of her pokemon have anything that can counteract that weakness at all.
i honestly thought the spinning sinistea cups in stow on side were pretty cute, but you're right, they have 0 connection to ghost types/fighting types whatsoever (and the spinning clobbopus cups make even less sense) personally though i think the worst galar gym would be motostoke, i still don't understand the logic behind having to catch fire type pokemon while the npcs attempt to sabotage you. i guess it does flip the challenge on its head when you go in with water types but find it only makes it harder, and at least being able to catch the exceedingly rare sizzlipede and fighting against kabu's gmax centiskorch is pretty cool-- actually never mind stow on side sucks and makes less sense than motostoke i totally agree with you
At the very least, the idea of a puzzle where you get knocked around by giant boxing globes has some relation to the fighting type. It kinda works for Bea(key word kinda), but it's exceedingly obvious that it was designed with her in mind rather than something that worked for both like Gordie and Melony.
I think the reason its a carnival ride mixed with a pinball machine is partially due to the fact that Bea and Allister are both kids still, they wanted something fun. Opal even states that their gym mission is specifically about having fun.
All of the gyms in Unova were pretty good (though I may just be biased as a fan), but if I had to choose the worst I would go for the library. Nimbasa gym was maybe not the most fun to play, but it is one of the most visually pleasing to look at and the roller coasters were cool.
Going after the low hanging fruit, my one complaint about half of the first gyms (basically gens 1-4) is the way you can avoid all the gym trainers. I don’t have a problem of being able to avoid trainers in a gym, but all of the 1st gyms in the first 4 gens are literally just single rooms with a straight path with trainers and an S shape going around them that lets you avoid them. They couldn’t at least come up with a more interesting design? At least in gen 5 onwards you either have to fight most of, if not all, the trainers or have an interesting main challenge with the trainer being optional obstacles. The best example of a proper first gym IMO is Milo’s gym in Turffield; an interesting and unique main objective with gym trainers acting as optional obstacles that, if beaten, reward you by making challenge slightly easier to accomplish by calling back the Yamper that get in your way.
I think you should be able to avoid all the trainers in the gym, but you have to actually be creative about it. The first 2 gyms in let's go Kanto are just s shapes
I think the point is to either punish new players who will miss the good experience from the battles and the actual experience of battling against the types and rewarding older players who just want to get done with it because after the first gym the game starts getting into a better pace.
I honestly think that all the gyms in Galar where pretty fun and fit their themes. The interior and exterior design for the gyms is also my favorite by far.
noooo can't believe you didn't even mention lumiose city's gym😭😭😭 there were so much potential in them using what was the in-universe equivalent of the eiffel tower and they wasted it on some lame quiz show set-up
I agree with the vermillion gym because of the puzzle but because of the digglets cave I don't understand, in many regions they put pokemon good against the next gym leader, like in cerulean you can catch oddish, in Rusdbord you can catch lotad, seedot, wigull and more before the Roxanne
The thing is, we don’t want remakes of the less impressive games. We don’t want to be given Delta Episodes and teasers for Battle Frontiers, we don’t want to be given rehashes of less impressive games. Let’s be honest, having more of an Emerald Version vibe would’ve been much better than the dull and uninspired Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire. Those games were, and are, disappointing. Give us the enhanced versions, remade and revamped. Or rather, hell, once you become Champion in BDSP, make it so that the season rolls around to winter, and you rechallenge the Gyms in your Platinum fit optionally, with Team Galactic returning and the Distortion World postgame opening up to capture Giratina. *Nobody* likes the puzzle of Sendoff Spring to catch base forme Giratina, just standing there for no good reason. Give us the climactic battle against Giratina’s Origin Forme that we all deserve! The last truly good remakes ever created were FireRed / LeafGreen and HeartGold / SoulSilver. Those not only brought out what was good about the previous games, but added a fresh coat of paint and new features that only enhanced the experience.
Its so unfortunate because ORAS did so much right, yet proceeded to shoot itself in the foot by only being a side grade to Emerald. No battle frontier, less challenge, no secret boss fight with Steven Stone post game. When the remake of a gen isn't a direct upgrade that should tell the developers that they fucked up.
I’m sorry but I am definitely gonna have to disagree with you here. ORAS was definitely better remakes than HG/SS and FR/LG. The whole point of remaking these games is to fix the problems that they suffered with. Any extra content added is like the icing on top of the cake. There may have been a lack of extra content added to ORAS but they fixed everyone that the original games were lacking from, which makes them a whole lot better than the other remakes Gamefreak has done. There were so many problems with Gold and Silver and it’s so disappointing that none of those problems were fixed when they made HG/SS. I’m glad they added other great content but their original flaws don’t constitute them as one of the “good remakes ever created.”
@@tylerdixon2173 I’m not sure what universe you’re living in where you honestly believe that ORAS were better remakes than HG/SS. ORAS legitimately took the original Ruby and Sapphire games and twisted them. Remember the mystery of Latios and Latias in the post game? Let’s get rid of that in favor of just giving you a legendary as a pre-Gen 7 ride Pokémon, PLUS the Mega Stone. Mega Evolutions made the Hoenn experience way too easy, along with having a Mega Latias / Latios as part of your team. Just doesn’t seem right. No Trainer Customization despite being in Gen 7, which introduced Trainer Customization. It also forces you into a single race, with no options for choosing skin or hair color. Even BDSP allows for that level of customization, so there’s no good reason why ORAS couldn’t do what the sparse and incomplete X and Y could do in spades. Also, in addition to Megas, let’s copy over the Battle Maison in place of the Battle Tower / the Emerald Battle Frontier. We don’t need an entire awesome battle facility, just give us the stale crap from Kalos for NO reason. ORAS was terrible, whereas HGSS were phenomenal games which introduced Johto and Kanto in a fresh coat of paint, along with Pokémon that followed you across the region. There was the nostalgic Game Boy Sounds feature, if you didn’t want to listen to the soundtrack of the modern games. Of course, the modern HGSS soundtrack was INCREDIBLE, whereas most of X/Y/ORAS left much to be desired musically. The Gym Leader rematches in HGSS? Insane. And the SPECIAL EVENTS? OMG SPECIAL EVENT ARCEUS AND THE SINJOH RUINS SHOWING THE BIRTH OF A LITERAL GOD OF YOUR CHOOSING. CELEBI TIME TRAVELING TO THE PAST TO LET YOU BATTLE PAST GIOVANNI. And the legendary music was completely original and badass, way cooler encounters than in the OG games which showed a static minimalist legendary sprite in the over world.
@@tylerdixon2173 Oh, and I almost forgot the Pokéwalker. Long before Pokémon GO, there was HGSS’s accidental perfect pedometer which you could use to walk with Pokémon in the real world. Great stuff. ORAS sucks in comparison
@@throwawayaccount4009 Well first I can see that your clearly biased from childhood nostalgia alone, which already makes your argument pretty weak, so let me be more clear in a way you can understand. ORAS definitely sucks badly and it is nowhere near my favorite pokémon game. But the exact same can be said about HG/SS to an even greater extent. Here being the reasons: - Gym leader rematches were absolutely pointless. They made it way to restricting by having different times and different days you need to first get their phone number and then battle them. And instead of providing a challenge, all they did was increase their levels and added other pokemon, when they could have increased IVs, EVs, better natures, better abilities, items and a more strategic AI. - The timed special events with Celebi, Arceus, and Spiky Pichu hold no value to the remakes whatsoever considering theres no way to do them anymore without hacking and a majority players never got to experience them, which makes them useless now. - The Level Curve was abominable. All the wild pokemon, and pokemon trainers had extremely low levels which only made the gameplay more of a chore to go through rather than a fun experience. Mt. Silver is the final most challenging area of the game and the highest level pokemon there are between levels 45-50. Really not worth it after going through two whole regions. - The region is extremely bland compared to every other region. Every cave and route looked the same and their were no special areas you would get to travel through. They only possible exception was maybe Ice Cave but even then there are no trainers in it so what's the point of going through it. - The pokemon diversity was horrendous. Almost all the pokemon you can catch and use are exclusively kanto pokemon and the johto pokemon you can use are really weak frail unsuable pokemon. All the johto pokemon like Houdoom, Skarmory, Magcargo, Tyranitar, and Sneasel are only availabel towards the end of the game or in Kanto only. - The Important pokemon trainers had terrible teams. The gym leaders, elite four, and champion used the same pokemon multiple times on their team. Depite being a johto game over half of the gym leaders used only kanto pokemon like Falkner could have used Hoothoot, or Chuck could have used Hitmontop, or Morty could have used Misdreavus, or Jasmine could have used Skarmory. - And at the end of it all there was no plot. Team Rocket comes back but they have such little impact on the game. You beat them a few times and that's it there gone forever. With no plot the games feels so much more empty and disappointing. All of these examples are what G/S suffered from and Gamefreak had every opportunity to fix these problems but they didn't. Thats why HG/SS are not "good remakes." Even though all that extra content you said was added, it still doesn't make up for the fact that all the fundamental problems are still there. Like I said before ORAS is still a terrible game but at least all the problems of R/S were fixed in ORAS.
I think Ecruteak deserved a mention because although the puzzle is somewhat interesting, the entire gym can be defeated with a single psychic Pokémon, since all trainers there use the Gastly/Haunter/Gengar line. They could have at least given Morty a Misdreavus to switch things up.
Maybe Jasmine have many poisoned Ampharoses and every time gym chalenger come to town she do the same thing. She could have a deal with guy who give you Cure. She have puzzle and he have customers in his shop.
IDK, I thought the idea of auditioning to take her place was fun, even if it clearly wasn't going to actually happen. It's interesting to think about how Gym leaders are chosen.
Honestly with ballonlea, opal can do no wrong. She’s like “I’m already out the door. I do whatever the heck I want.” Low key I hope the other older gym leaders like Watson and Wulfric can also retire. They’re just nice old dudes. Maybe not Watson since he’s competent in emerald but we need to walk wulfric to the nursing home
I just beat her, and, when she gave me a penalty for declaring her age, I did let out a laugh. She was just an old lady who could not wait to find a successor and retire.
The only ones I found kinda annoying is Opelacid Gym in BW1. But even that one isn't that bad and it was fixed in BW2. But yeah. Unova definitely has the best gyms.
Fantina was the bane of my platinum playthroughs, because that bloody haunter can sweep teams, shadow ball has become my most fear inducing move since.
I love how for Jasmine, they just made her gym gimmick be going on an errand for the Ampharos in the lighthouse. At least there were trainer fights there
Unova's bug gym was just weird. You have to walk straight through thick walls of honey and battle clowns until you reach the leader. Easily my least favorite gym in the franchise.
This channel is my OG Pokémon channel, the first I've ever subscribed. It's like my childhood crush, always dear in my heart. The content never disappoints! Keep up the awesome work
Kanto: 100% Agree on Vermilion. Puzzle is literally trash and is annoying A/F. Johto: Again, 100% agree on Olivine. It’s kind of hard not to pick it. At least Violet has a cool theme, especially in HGSS. The trainers in the lighthouse don’t use Steel-types either. Hoenn: Originally was going to say Mauville, but the Dewford Gym is far more annoying and just a dumb maze with nothing of interest. At Least ORAS tried to make it interesting. Sinnoh: I would say Oreburgh and DP Hearthome are tied. Totally agree with your reasoning for Hearthome. My problem with Oreburgh is that it’s basically exactly the same as Pewter Gym except, HEY! Elevated platforms! Unova: I disagree with Nacrene just because I love the idea of a Museum and Library being a Gym. Also disagree with BW1 Nimbasa simply because aesthetic is a huge thing for me and I love the roller coaster theme. My least favorite from Unova is BW1 Opelucid. The dragon statue is boring and all you do is backtrack over the gym multiple times to hit the same switches over and over. BW2 version made it so much better. Kalos: 100% agree on the Shalour Gym, just doesn’t do anything for me. However, the Lumiose Gym is also a huge let down. A giant tower in the middle of the largest city in the Pokemon world and it’s just a quiz show…. Galar: Spikemuth. We finally get a Dark-type gym and it’s just a long ass gauntlet battle. That being sad, Hammerlocke is also a letdown because it’s the final gym in the game and it’s just some weather types battles that don’t even take place in the gym itself. Motostoke is just dumb. Catch two Pokémon and defeat a third one…might as well be trainer battles. Was also sad that Ballonlea is just a quiz gym as well. It’s one of the most unique town in Galar and it has a totally boring gym.
The worst gym in Galler has to be a time between the dark and dragon type gyms if we're talking about puzzles these two just have you fight gym trainers in succession the dragon type gym doesn't even pretend to have a puzzle but at least it offers a double battle weather strategy but you have a single fairy type against Pierce you sweep You can argue Skuntank would be a problem but you could have gotten a Mawile and you definitely have a corviknight not to mention you could have gotten a mudsdale or Palpitoad or any member of the hitmon family way before then
I actually enjoyed the Snowbelle gym. Its puzzle was pretty well designed. Imo, a worse gym is the grass one, which has a painfully long maze and very little of interest around. At least the battle there is a challenge.
In a little bit of defense against those gyms: -Lt. Surge: ...Okay, this is irredeemable. It's just really funny that Twitch Plays Pokemon were stuck for HOURS trying to cut a tree, but they've got the puzzle at first try. -Jasmine: Yeah, the gym is overall bland, but in another context, it just feels the most fair gym for a town that's not the first town you visit. Imagine you live in a city with a gym, and that gym has a complex mechanic (not talking about the levels; Origins has a good explanation about that), then you move onto another cities to continue your journey, and the last one happens to be in the only city that has a school on it. In other words, the first one you visit. -Wattson: For one side, yeah, electric types are not very well executed in terms on difficulty in this gym. On the other hand, Marshtomp just breaks the game. -Fantina: I like to think that she's so invested as a coordinator she forgot to actually look for more ghosts and grinds to be a proper gym leader. Like, you have a job related to the Pokemon League; you must at least know that Cynthia has a ghost type that you could show off too if you find it (which is still hard, specially for her as coordinator). But at the time you visit her, she forgot to actually have a proper puzzle and just recruited some math teachers to do the job because. -Roark: The gym for itself isn't the problem. Rock type is just too easy, specially if your fire type knows to fight. -Elesa: I start to think that early-game Electric gyms are bad at balancing in general. Like... Elesa is the third third gym leader that got into the list. -Wulfric: This is a genuine moment of "choose your difficulty: Kalos-standarized easy, or begin tryhard and end up in lulz". Specially with two story-based starters with megas and one possible specific Fire type, also with mega. It's beyond bad; it's hilarious. -Galar worst gyms: I don't know what did you pick up just because they all cover their weaknesses with their own advantages. That alone speaks for itself.
So being honest, I’m fine with funny/comic relief gyms, I just wish they were earlier gyms, or they had something that could make the gym challenging instead of JUST, or even just make the gym immediately before or after extremely difficult, so that it can be either the short break before or after a real challenge.
I was completely expecting Hearthome city's gym, but yeah, I completely agree, I simply do not understand why they have that as the puzzle. It has nothing to do with ghost types or with Fantina's love of dancing or contests or whatever it is that she's into outside of Pokemon.
Definitely agreed on Vermilion City gym. Still to this day, my least favorite gym out of the series. Though I'm not a fan of Snowpoint City's gym either. Those sliding and knocking out snowballs in a right momentum puzzles is so annoying; that it is so slow and sometimes hard to memorized to figure out. I disagree on Nacrene & Nimbasa City's gym. I didn't mind them. As I said, I think Unova has the best gyms out of them all.
I never really had anything against the Vermillion gym. Imo the biggest disappointment in regards to Kanto gyms applies to Cinnabar Island in Gen 2. Not only the gym, but the whole island itself.
To be fair on the e magnemite on jasmine, all of johto has the “hey, this gym leader has mostly kanto Pokémon!”. I agree that h to ‘‘em being copied of each other is stupid. So is not giving mons like foretresssome love.
I feel like the main reason they used rock at the first gym in the early games is because 2/3 of the starter types are super effective against it. also pokemon is still mostly marketed towards children so it kinda doubles as a tutorial to gyms for newer players
2:03 this is actually a reference to cs students. The experience of aimlessly searching through trash, hoping for something to work out "just one time", and feeling like everything related to electricity is working against you... this is basically what trying to fix your program after it crashes for the 100th time feels like
I always had this headcanon where instead of my trainer starting their own Steel gym, he travels to Johto to help Jasmine with hers. Making a gym puzzle and being an obstacle in it
If I recall for the "math gym", it's the only place to see drifbloon outside of the Friday event. So if you get all the math questions right, you have to wait till a Friday to complete your dex and get the national dex.
I feel like Jasmine's Steelix had Sunny Day specifically to counter Water moves since it's part Ground, but yeah. Steel's biggest weakness is probably Fire, so giving it Sunny Day was a pretty poor decision
I believe it was intentional. Back in Gen 2, Steel type was introduced and we didn't have as many sources to research as nowadays. As Steelix was correctly presumed to be Onix's evolution, trainers tend to adopt the same strategy which worked in RBY to beat Onix, using Water or Grass moves. Figuring out that Fire type moves are actually the most effective way to win this battle adds the shock value.
The feels when you lose to the fairy gym in shield the first time because you get every single question wrong even after catching onto the gimmick of the questions having the less expected answers. Oh and two ancient power boosts just to really rub it in.
Another thing about Fantina's gym that makes it even worse, is that you are literally given a watch at the beginning of the game that has a calculator in it. So even if you suck at math, you can still get through the gym without having to fight a single gym trainer.
Wulfric is so unrememberable I didn't even know he wore a hoodie like a cape. And I loved X and Y despite me and my friend seeing how easy it was compared to gen 5 and gen 5 Vrs 2. They undermined his gym so hard by giving you a mega lucario that it was just sad. Least they could have done was put 6 perfect iv + ev pokemon in his party and a jinx. Can't forget X and Y first introduced special training you could do the second you had it unlocked.
maybe it was because i was pretty inexperienced and picked up gen 5 after a long pokemon hiatus, but Elesa's gym was fricken hard to beat, mostly cause i also chose the water starter and the anime convinced me that the rock type could also resist electric [stupid gen one making all rock types also ground types] So her gym was tough. Didn't struggle that hard with a gym til Paldea's own Elesa: Iono. Yea she was the only gym leader to actually make me do it twice, Tulip came close tho
Hi JPR. Loved this vid and I’ve gotta say I agree with you about Wattson and the Mauville Gym in RSE. However, I’m probably in a minority here when I say the second worst one is Wallace and Sootpolis. I never used to think this, but I replayed Sapphire recently and there were some things that didn’t really make sense to me about that gym. The first being the type that’s used. When you go inside the gym and you see the ice floors (which are really cool btw and I’m not complaining about that particular aspect), but if you were to play the game for the first time it would you make that it’s an Ice type Gym instead of a water one, because there’s ice literally everywhere and the first time you see water in that gym is when you reach the top and see the waterfalls next to Wallace. There’s nothing there to make you think that it’s a Water type gym upon first glance. Secondly, the Pokémon that Wallace uses doesn’t really make sense to me, Milotic aside. Let me explain: he starts off with a Luvdisc, with which I literally just watched a video of you tonight saying that Luvdisc is the worst Pokémon of it’s type. Why would somebody who’s supposed to be the strongest Gym Leader in the region start off with the weakest Pokémon of it’s type that you can get? Especially given the fact that the Hoenn region is based around water and there are an abundance of better water types available, having a Luvdisc seems stupid. Secondly, the fact that he has a Sealeo instead of a Walrein. If you think back to the 5th gym, Petalburg, Norman has not one, but two, Slaking’s, which obviously is Slakoth’s final evolved form. Why does the 5th gym leader have two fully evolved Pokémon, but the 8th and supposedly strongest gym leader in Hoenn hasn’t got a final evolved form of one of his? A gym leader that has both Walrein AND Milotic is bloody tough. I don’t mind him having a Whiscash, because it’s dual Water/Ground typing takes out the electric weakness, but also having a Seaking, who is also not great, just rounds out what I think is an odd team. It just seems to me that Wallace has TOO much reliance on Milotic as his ace. I would replace Luvdisc and Seaking with any one of Golduck, Gyarados, Relicanth (who you are able to catch up to that point in the game), Kingdra, Huntail/Gorebyss, Wailord, Starmie or Lanturn, take your pick. Again, I accept I may be in a minority here and I’ll wear any disagreements or criticisms about this opinion, but I just think Wallace is a missed opportunity. He could’ve been made a much bigger challenge as an 8th Gym Leader
I feel Rock being the first Gym for three generations kinda ties in with three of the first five Fire starters being having Fire as a secondary typing upon evolving: Rock is already weak to Grass and Water and neutral against both, and adding Fighting to Fire gives that starter the same neutrality against Rock and a SE STAB.
