I have to say, I had some problems with Tommy until Dino Thunder. Namely the writing surrounding his character: Zeo especially got mired in the Tommy black hole, where most episodes ended up centering on him. My main problem was that his character didn't change all that much from when he had been freed from Rita's control. Dino Thunder fixed this for me, and showed us a more interesting Tommy who'd grown, and was trying to deal with the legacy he left behind - allowing him some room to grow as mentor to three new rangers
@PissedGrunty

Kevin was the most insufferable character (next to mentor ji) in samurai. He immediately treated Antonio like dirt just because he did things differently and had such a huge rod up his anus the whole series. Lauren, Antonio, Emily, and Mia were the only likable characters.

Trueeeee. Lauren was such an interesting character, and in my opinion, she deserved more screen time. There was so much potential in her ;-; The good thing, though, is that she got more focus in Shattered Grid! Antonio was also really cool, and his introduction story was more interesting than the over-arching plot (in my opinion, at least). It's not really the actor. It's what the directors and production give to said actor to work with. I truly wish that they could do such a thing as recreate a season or seasons. And only two per group proves to be a problem. Each new ranger team doesn't get much time to grow or learn. Sure they have mentors, but I think a third, longer season of Megaforce would've changed things for them. If the actors got more say and the production team put forth more effort, then maybe, Megaforce and Super Megaforce would've really been legendary. And not just that season, every season of Power Rangers should at least have three seasons rather than two. #PowerRangers

I'm a little lost on this point as well. Having fairly recently read books 1-4, I find that many of the situations that Harry and gang are placed stem from stopping a threat or are simply out of their control. In the first book, they begin to notice a plot by Voldemort to acquire an object that will give him immortality (which is very bad for everyone). Chamber of Secrets focuses on Harry clearing his name as prime suspect in attacks against other students. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry wants to confront his parents' murderer who has escaped prison and is now at Hogwarts. Lastly, Goblet of Fire is all about a ploy by the Deatheaters to have Harry wind up their prisoner so that Voldemort can be brought back to power. Some of the more smaller, "selfish" actions like constantly returning to the Mirror of Erised or learning the Patronus Charm still have motivation behind them; the mirror is the only way to see his parents and the Patronus Charm is to ward off the Dementors that keep attacking him. Never once while reading the books have I questioned his motivations so far. I've yet to read through the last three books and I don't remember the films that well, but I can't think of any other times that Harry just does "things for himself but for no reason." All of his motivations are made clear.

Jessica Francis Jayden was a well-written character in my opinion
@ryanwalters1682
@ryanwalters1682 5 лет назад
They provide plenty of reasons. Jayden had the responsibility of being a leader to a team of members that aren't on his level of combat and strategic skills, so he feels the need to tackle many difficulties on his own. Jayden also has the vital duty of being the focus/distraction for the enemy while his sister works on the sealing technique. All the while, Jayden is conflicted because he's made out to be this savior when in actuality he's just a facade to hide the real trump card. This explains why Jayden tried to prove himself by defeating Deker in a proper one on one duel. It makes Jayden complex as a character, but a poor choice as a leader for a Power Rangers team.

I didn't really relate to the Lightspeed Rangers at the time. It's only because of things like Linkara's History of the Power Rangers that I've come to appreciate Carter's badassery. I would've liked for Jayden to have been characterized like Leonardo of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, from either the 2003 cartoon or the 2007 animated movie, where he's very rigid and disciplined, but to a fault, where it causes him to clash with his team on several occasions. That to me is justifiable in rehashing as a lesson he constantly needs to learn as opposed to learning how to work together in a team that by nature of the job, you're supposed to work with. With him having been raised and trained so rigidly by himself, it'd be a harder habit to break, that as leader his issue is on HOW they should work together, learning that he needs to be more fluid and understanding and adaptive, less of a hard-ass(kind of like a tame version of Jen in TForce)especially with the outgoing and combative natures of his teammates. He'd see himself as the golden child but instead of worshiping him, his ego causes him to clash with some if not all, of his teammates.

I think the Ranger I can't stand the most is Dax. He is just obnoxious, irresponsible, his jokes are atrocious, his personality grates on you like a dull chainsaw, and if I may quote Linkara: "SHUT! UP! DAX!" Troy Burrows, on the other hand... Well, Andrew Gray pretty much said that the only reason he didn't have a character was because he was never given one. Frankly, that's accurate. I don't blame him for it. But yeah, I gotta admit Troy is basically a chunk of wood with no personality whatsoever.
@TheDisneyBrain
@TheDisneyBrain 6 лет назад
LOL, I must be the odd one out because every now and then, I found Dax to be a bit funny. Even though he's still a pretty poor character all things considered. Like, he wanted to be a director at the end, but why though...? He never really grew, and the job he apparently wants is at least five steps above the stunt man he was, so it was confusing. Your point about Troy is why I try my best to avoid going after the actors themselves, unless said actor is Samuell Benta who did actual scummy things. Because most of the time, I don't think there's much they could have done. Even Sean Johnson, the immaculate Carter, made it clear in an interview he did that the actors didn't get a whole lot of input.
@judeskater93
@judeskater93 4 года назад
Kalain Reinard yeah I felt the same way about Dax and do agree with linkara on how obnoxious the more time Dax had. That said, I honestly find Troy to be the worst cause not only is he more bland than wood but for someone who's had some martial arts and fighting experience, HE IS VERY STUPID, and that stupidity shows with his brilliant idea of "never let go of our weapons" which is freaking dumb and a terrible decision by a leader, YOU ARE POWER RANGERS THAT HAVE ALSO TRAINED AND FOUGHT UNARMED!!! Sorry, Troy just really pisses me off and find him to be the overall worst ranger and worst ranger leader.

For anyone who reads Disney Brain's comment and wonders what he's talking about, here you go: Benta played Will in Operation Overdrive and the "scummy" thing he did was take a banner from an autograph booth at the first Power Morphicon (which was supposed to be auctioned off for charity) as a souvenir and refused to give it back. That's reason why i love character of Casey in power rangers jungle fury. His story arch is litterally "From zero to hero" and we saw him grow from little 'cub' as cadet in academy to competent leader who cares about his teammates as family. In his debut episode we saw him as cadet who stand against bully of the academy and he proofed his bravery, but still lack of much skill. Casey even fails with his first morphing to ranger. Lucas sadly couldn't get any character development. His sentai counterpart was a racer who was forced to leave his career because he had a terminal disease and was dying all through Timeranger. There's no way that Saban would risk would risk something that dark in a children's show. And even though Time Force is good a lot of it is a point for point copy paste of Timeranger.
@UltimaKeyMaster
@UltimaKeyMaster 6 лет назад
But...the very first episode of Time Force had Alex seemingly dying ON SCREEN, how would that have been too heavy? Heck, we've had villains die from causes outside of Ranger explosions prior to that like in Lost Galaxy. And if we wanna talk main Rangers, *Kendrix.*
@aliastheabnormal
@aliastheabnormal 6 лет назад
Trust me Time force was vastly watered down from the sentai. For starters Alex's counterpart never died he merely faked his death as part of the evil plan and is considered the main villain of the series. Also Kendrix was never meant to die. She only died and was replaced by Karone because Kendrix's actress got a bout of Leukemia and needed emergency chemotheraphy so they revived the Psycho rangers to kill her off. Hell Karone was plan B since her original replacement was meant to be Cassie which was the whole purpose of the crossover but they couldn't afford Cassie's actress so they had to settle for Karone. It didn't help that Saban pussied out by reviving her in the season finale and now they can't make up their minds if Kendrix is the pink ranger now as shown in the Lightspeed crossover or Karone as shown in Super Megaforce.
@SuperSongbird21
@SuperSongbird21 6 лет назад
But they could've done something equally dramatic - maybe suggest that Lucas had been too much of a hothead in his racing career and he caused some terrible accident, so he joined Time Force to make a positive contribution to society as penance. I know that's a bit of a cliché, but Power Rangers has done stuff that is tragic or has a serious point to make.
@TheDisneyBrain
@TheDisneyBrain 6 лет назад
Ransik did not exist in Timeranger, but his inclusion was crucial to the narrative of Time Force. They were the furthest thing from lazy, regardless of the plot points they adapted from their Sentai counterpart, as Ranger seasons tend to do. But take this with a grain of salt, since I've only actually seen Kyuranger Sentai-wise, so my real question is where do we draw the line between retreading and adapting? And should it even matter if it creates good shows from both?(I'm assuming Timeranger is good. It sounds good!)
@aliastheabnormal
@aliastheabnormal 6 лет назад
Timeranger is good. The problem is that it didn't sell and it led to the creation of Gaoranger which is where Sentai is considered to have begun to decline in general due to the introduction of the Power Animals/Wild Zords. Something I agree with especially since Power Rangers did Gaoranger better. I saw both the sentai and Wild Force and I can guarantee you outside of Master Org it is a clone of the sentai. But Master Org's inclusion made it a better show because he was a better villain than his underlings and the American origin story makes more sense than Japanese pollution yokai. I kid you not that's what the Orgs were in Japan. Sentai in general are like Power rangers, hit or miss depending on the season since the cast and crew changes every year. The only plus is that there are no super seasons and I worry for Beast changers since Go-busters had its own version of Troy in Hiromu who is worse because he froze around chickens.

I loved your take on the "worst" rangers. I was expecting some WatchMojo Top 10 worse rangers kind of thing, but kudos to you for making this a little more interesting. You are definitely right when some people might find some characters annoying, while others find them endearing. For example, I actually really like Justin Stewart despite what most ranger fans might say about him. It's probably because I could relate to what it feels like to be the least experienced or the obvious odd one out, and the actor actually did a good job despite the unfortunate material that was given to him. Back to your point, I always find the "Worst" ranger characters as simply the ones with the obvious one trait (e.g. the comic relief, the tough guy). As well, the ones with no backstory. If I had to choose one, I'd probably say Gia from Megaforce. No character development, no backstory (although you could say that for most of the megaforce characters minus noah) and no explanation of why she acted "tough." I felt like the writers could have easily made a plot of her trying and failing to live up to her "perfect" reputation. I felt like that was a missed opportunity.

@UltimaKeyMaster
@UltimaKeyMaster 6 лет назад
Anyone who simply says Justin by himself is the worst is a moron who lacks context of why Turbo flopped. It was that the writing took a very noticeable downgrade, and simultaneously writing Justin as a competent fighter as any of them while still treating him like the kid he is on occasion. Pretty ironic situation though considering both the White Ranger and the Gold Ranger were *also* kids in their respective Sentai, which the former explains why Tommy acted super childish towards Saba at first despite having that mature emotional reunion just minutes prior.
@TheDisneyBrain
@TheDisneyBrain 6 лет назад
Haha, I actually cannot stand how Watchmojo does Ranger content, so I'm glad I was not that :) I too never had any problems with Justin. I just felt that they could have used his status as a child to greater effect. Since Rangers has never done this again, I can only reference the one Sentai that I've watched a fair bit of. In Kyuranger, Kotaro is also a kid, but I love what they did with him. So with Justin, I wish there could have been more of a learning curve for him. I also really dug how In Space brought him back for an episode and how he seemed a little bit more mature. Nice detail.

@anirudhviswanathan3986 6 лет назад
The Disney Brain Justin imo wasn't despised back then, at least from kids. He was living OUR DREAM!! How can us kids of the 90s and early 00s hate him? And for PR standards, his acting was fairly good, given that most other child actors in PR can barely get two words without struggling immensely. But he certainly wasn't at all one of the many problems of Turbo. That had mainly to do with the writing having no direction at all, partly because the sentai Carranger was a parody, so the writers had no idea how to build the season, at least until the finale which was pretty intense.

Jayden was more poorly positioned than anything. You hit it on the head in the samurai review episode. If you switch Laura and Jayden spots the show is a great season. Their backstory could be lije Iron Fist where they were orphans who the mentor guy finds and adopts. His last name could've been Shiba and he gave it to them. Laura should've been the leader from the jump and her team wasn't hero worshipping but at first apprehension because she is a girl leader that changes to respect. The mentor could be a jerk in the 1st season that is overly critical of Laura. The team of misfits rally around Laura because you had her do some of the Jesus Jayden moves but it would be seen differently because she was willing to put herself in harm's way to protect her team. Super Samurai could've introduced Jayden still with his personality doing Laura's job with the scroll. The mentor guy who be more sympathetic because you understand why he hero worshipped Jayden. Laura leaves because there can only be 1 red ranger and she feels like her team who has bonded with her needs to only have 1 leader. You can have Jayden like Alex grom tolime force where he is so used to being an individual (due to his isolation to learn the scroll) and sees yhe team as lazy. You can have Jayden fail and everyone besides the misfits give up. But they remember Laura's leadership during struggles and go find her. Jayden showing humility, gives his power back to Laura. She uses the scroll and saves the day. Jayden contributes by beating Decker.

Not bad. I don't think the switch would be necessary other than Lauren's actress seemed to show more character in a few episodes than Jayden's did in two seasons as the focus. Tommy, at least originally, is the worst Ranger. "Power Rangers is about team work. Jason is the leader, but we are all equal members of a team. There is no main character. Except Tommy. Tommy is special. Also he's the leader... Even though Jason is the leader..." Yeah, fuck Tommy in his first few seasons... His character's role on the team was narratively crap, and while he as an individual had a great story, his existence diminished all the other rangers, ESPECIALLY Jason... Tommy was bad for the show as a whole until they finally made him the red ranger, which he should have been in the first place...

You bring up good points. But there is more about Nick. He is the one who will instantly give up if things start going bad. That does NOT make him a good leader. And after so much focus throughout Mystic Force, he gave up during the finale as well. It was Maddie who got least amount of focus, who had to remind him that giving up is not the solution. After all that focus, after being told that how much great his parents were, how they never gave up and that he is the "light" blah,blah,blah, he just gave up. That moment was really horrible. Jayden never really has great conversations with his teammates and it wouldn't have been a problem if they hadn't made the "friendship" as a plot point. His teammates were whining about Jayden who had so much problems connecting with them, when there was Lauren who wanted to be friends and also gave them permission to go look for Jayden. But when her sealing symbol failed, no one bothered to comfort her that it wasn't her fault. Those last episodes is what pulled the whole team down for me. They tried to tell that they were great friends but I really can't feel the friendship. Anyways these are my opinions. Great video Disney Brain 👍

The Disney Brain I have some nitpick with the Overdrive Rangers in the finale and especially with Mack - he goes to battle Florious on his own, knowing that he is not a living being and according to him it doesn't matter if he'd be destroyed. One thing I've liked in Mack (despite all rangers being as bland as toilet paper) is that he was eager to be part of it despite the objections of his father Mr. Hartford (knowing the risks that Mack may get destroyed in battle). In Once a Ranger while everyone else gave up and moved on with their lives, it was Mack who went on to find Excelsior. Nick Russell is the embodiment of a really BAD ranger - he constantly gave up when things started to look bleaker. And it's up to everyone else (even Phineas) to remind his that if he gives up all hope is lost for good.

Nick in Mystic force was a strange character and Like Troy he was poorly written based on the fact that he is the counterpart to Red Sentai Ranger. MagiRed was the youngest sibling of the Ozu Family the fabled hero of the Magiranger spoken in legend and the Leader of the team, despite what MagiGreens insane "Make me feel better about myself" Troll logic said. MagiRed was from the start the Odd Ranger out for a number of reasons. Aside from being the youngest sibling and the one with the least respect from his siblings he also had Ranger oddities. His Magical specialty was Alchemy, the changing of an object into something else, which in normal forms of fiction means the transmutation of more common metals to more valuable and in demand metals such as Iron Silver and Gold, while that's good and all but that doesn't really translate well to a combat strong magical specialy. It's used mostly to disguise stuff and once get a kid to safety by turning his backpack to a jetpack. MagiRed's Mecha forms were drastically Different, MagiPhoenix did NOT look like a bird at all instead it looked like a knight, a knight that wielded his sword reverse style and actually never once used it in combat with a giant monster but still. MagiPhoenix could also combine with Dark Magic Horse Barikion and Horned Sacred Horse Unigolon aside from with the other MagiMajins that are his siblings into MagiKing, who could combine into MagiDragon. In Legend Mode the other Magirangers form MagiLion while MagiRed forms MagiFirebird again excluding him in some way. Nicks characterization was written so that while he fought along side his fellow rangers and became their friend he was always never quite made to be as close to Blue Green Yellow and Pink as they are to each other as per rule of symbolism. Due to Nicks Ranger/Zord forms appearing to be the Odd man out it would be weird to have a long time friend suddenly be the only one to not participate in certain combinations. So Nick became a teenage drifter and remained as the snarky biting Red Ranger that not everyone liked in the fanbase. It DID help out in an episode where Nick suddenly became possessed by The Master and become the New Koragg the Knight Wolf as Nicks self doubt contributed to the possession.

I felt that Nick earning his magic at the beginning fails in comparison when Kai got his magic because it was based on courage than belief. Plus, Mystic Force really cut some good stuff like when Kai taught his yellow ranger bro that "you are you and do things your way", or when he gave up his personal needs to fight some monster that relied on boxing moves.

I think the only black mark I can give Nick is that his character was too centered around not being a basic red ranger. While most people don't see Nick's changes I actually noticed one thing change and that is his relationships. He came in as a fighter, but also as a loner. He was used to being the odd man out, until he met people that actually changed that. Just Nick being able to step back and have his teammates get a spotlight is an improvement in of itself. Not to mention we started to see him become arrogant and it took him getting beat a few times before he humbled up a little. Basically Nick is a hard-head character. There are always issues with dealing with a hard-head character. Also let's not forget his element: Fire. Fire can be a beacon of hope and a destructive force at the same time, just like Nick.

Sometimes the character's journey can be one of self actualization rather then self development where a character learns that they had everything they needed to be a hero all along and to be the best of themselves. In the Megaforce fanfiction inside my head, that's what I did with Troy. He would have been a huge fan of the Power Rangers since he saw an old tape of them on a talk show when he was eight. The reason he's so stoic when he morphs is that he's trying to emulate his childhood heroes, as Jason and Carter were also stoic, but learns to be his own kind of red ranger by the end. When he acts that way the reasons he comes across as stiff and robotic is because it's not his true personality. He gets flashes of the legendary battle when he's close to the Phantom Ranger due to there being two of him in the same place at the same time. Troy's mother would have been supportive during his childhood but his father would have been highly critical of the Power Rangers. This is because he was ex-air force and most human catastrophe's had ceased due to the monster attacks leading to funding being cut and him being put on extended leave. Troy would have become conflicted as he got older. I also considered writing a Toqger adaptation where the rangers were all constructs of pure imagination made by children and had to undergo reverse character development. They started as a kids idea of perfect and went on a personal journey to become imperfect and thus more real as a result. It can also be about how they influence others. Nick's ended up being like that unintentionally. His pessimism spurring the others to step up and be most heroic.

Wow, I love the Air Force angle! Most fans know that military forces in general aren't exactly omnipresent throughout the series. And even when they are like in Lost Galaxy or RPM, they quickly prove to be the less effective option, even though there are more of them. Seeing that result in funding cuts would be the perfect incorporation of Nolan-like gritty realism upon an otherwise fantastical adventure.

I get that a lot of this is budget and time, but even good seasons like Lightspeed and SPD would have benefited from more visible support teams. Heck, given Harford's wealth Overdrive should have had it as well. We got a glimmer of that idea with The Silver Guardians. How difficult would it be to have guys in uniform getting civilians out of the way or holding the mooks at bay while the Rangers fought the main monsters? Countdown to Destruction showed the value of untrained civilian support.

okay so you said something interesting in the mystic force segment, you mentioned how green was more the leader than red, which, actually translates pretty well from magiranger, funnily enough, given how magigreen is the oldest sibling and basically the one holding the family together for a while until they all learn to stand on their feet. They still could have done better with the writing overall though, Magiranger's magic system is WAAAAAAY better, and the Magirangers all being a family (including the 'sixth' ranger), was a fantastic element to the plot that was partially excised for next to no reason. I think it would have been pretty cool to have everyone in the core team have been cousins somehow or something, at least.

Jayden Shiba is a young man directly descended from the Shiba family. He was raised since childhood by Mentor Ji after his father gave him the Lion Folding Zord before his final battle. He is the substitute 18th leader of the Samurai Power Rangers. Jayden is generally calm and serious, though he considers others' feelings and is willing to do anything to help his friends. Jayden is always concerned for the other Rangers, even once attempted to leave and fight alone to put them out of risk and initially refused to allow Antonio to join them for the same reason. His excellent fighting skills make him the target of a mysterious half-Nighlok, half-human warrior named Deker, who wants to find a formidable opponent for his katana Uramasa. It is hinted several times that he is keeping a secret from the other Rangers, which often troubles him but he reminds himself it's for their safety. Being the only Ranger that can master a special sealing character that can seal away the leader of the Nighloks: Master Xandred, the other Rangers are very protective of him and are often willing to put themselves in harms way for his safety, which constantly troubles him. As the series progress he becomes more open with them and accepts the fact that they are a team. In a fight against Deker, Deker states that he has become weaker because he relies on his teammates now as opposed to fighting alone as he did previously. Mentor Ji assures him this is not true and that he brings honor to all the Red Rangers before him. Jayden's secret is finally revealed in the episode "Fight Fire with Fire." Jayden was not the true Red Ranger but was rather standing in for his older sister Lauren, who was sent into hiding as a child to avoid being targeted by the Nighloks as she was the only one who could master the sealing symbol and not Jayden. After Lauren takes her place at the Shiba House as the true Red Ranger, Jayden decides to leave the Shiba House no longer having any purpose there much to the other Rangers dismay. After one final battle with Deker, the other Rangers convince him to return before the reawakening of Master Xandred. After Lauren's Sealing Symbol failed to forever seal away Master Xandred, she relinquishes leadership of the team back to Jayden. Alongside the other Samurai Rangers, Jayden uses Shogun mode to destroy Master Xandred, and then the Samurai Megazord to defeat him for good. After the final battle, Jayden stays at the Shiba house with Mentor Ji, finally learning to have fun now that his samurai duties are over, with Mentor Ji even giving him a new red colored guitar as a victory gift. He would later appear to provide assistance to the Power Rangers Super Megaforce, allowing them to make use of the Double Disc to battle an enemy. He and his teammates would then join the army of veteran Rangers who battle alongside the Megaforce Rangers against the Armada. As the Red Ranger, he is the Samurai of Fire and his personal weapon is the Fire Smasher, with the Bullzooka serving as his secondary weapon. The Fire Smasher can enter "Cannon Blast Mode" when used any auxiliary Zord disk. He pilots the Lion Folding Zord, the Tiger Zord, and the Bull Zord. The Lion Disk and the Lightning Disk allow him to use the moves "Blazing Strike" and "Lightning Fury" respectively. When both Disks are used in combination with two Spin Swords, Jayden can use the "Blazing Storm" attack. He can use the Black Box to access his Super Mode or the Shark Disk to access Shark Attack Mode. When piloting a zord he morphs into his Mega Mode form. He will morph into Super Mega Mode or Mega Shark Mode if he was in Super Mode or Shark Attack mode prior to morphing. Using the Shogun Buckle he can access Shogun Mode. Jayden Shiba is portrayed by Alex Heartman. As a child, he is portrayed by George Beca. and that is why Jayden is my favorite ranger. (I know im late.)

While Mystic Force is still one of my favorite seasons, I always regretted the lack of character development and bonds between characters that were never truly explored. When it comes to the Samurai Rangers, the reason their characterization doesn't really fit and why Jayden is practically praised like a God is because Samurai is litteraly a copy and paste to Samurai Sentai Shinkenger while still being in only a few things. Which is my personal problem with Power Rangers Samurai. And mind you, I'm leaving most of the production issues. Trust me, if you watch the Sentai you can see where the Samurai Rangers characterization just makes sense and why Jayden is treated like a God. Now with Nick, he is a lot like Kai (His sentai counterpart) but he isn't Kai. That's kind of why the writers have Nick as a hot head because of the sentai footage. Which is why he's fighting out of pure rage against Koragg in that one episode. Then there is Lucas. If Time Force did get a movie or even another season, I think his past would've been expanded on and we could see why he was acting "cool". However, I do agree with you. Maybe Lucas acting like he was cool was because he is hiding some deep insecurities from his childhood that still haunts him til this day. Maybe there was a time where he wasn't cool.

I get where you're coming from with Samurai, I just wish the writers could have done better with the scenes they had to film. In Time Force's case, there's also a lot of carry over from the Sentai(So I'm told, I haven't actually seen Timeranger). But they made it work because Wes and Jen were so dynamic. The problem with Samurai is that at no point did the production team realize that not only is having a white boy named "Shiba" nonsensical, but the idea of the Ranger team being one demi-God and five stragglers just doesn't fit, even if that was the case in the Sentai. And I'm sure they could have better worked around what the Sentai did to at least develop the characters without the suits, even if that means the Sentai footage they do end up using looks more incongruous. Of the two, I'd chose the later.

You did some great work here (as usual) Because you spend more time on why you FEEL like the "bad" rangers on this list are bad. And I like that you made it clear that these are your personal feelings on the matter (most of which I agree with) Moreover you challenged yourself to look at rangers from seasons you like. To that end I submit 2 more rangers who, I regret to say, were both flat (being characters that didn't grow and evolve as the rest of their teams did) And became characters who were just there because they were there for a while. Trini, the original Yellow Ranger is a GREAT example of a character who go left behind by her team. She stated OUT endearing, necessary and essential, as the translator for Billy and the only one able to keep up with him intellectually. But eventually Billy was allowed to grow to the point where he didn't NEED her to translate for him. But in truth she had no character arc, She was everything that made a great Ranger, especially since she was able to connect with almost EVERYONE on her team, but she just kind of stagnated, she couldn't find a way to grow. The second ranger also requires taking off the nostalgia tinted glasses: Rocky. When Tommy became the White Ranger he called upon Jason for help more than once. And in situations when they were separated Jason still immediately became the second in command. Wearing Red means that, even in a series where Red is NOT the lead color, you are high on the chain of command. And yes I there IS a chain of command (however loose or unimportant it might be) So there was some expectation that Rocky would have to grow and rise to earn that proverbial rank, and the results in that regard were underwhelming at best. In fact it was Adam who took more charge than Rocky, which might explain WHY Adam became Zeo Ranger 4 (and yes I think he was the second in command in Zeo) I think the ONLY time Rocky really grew as a character was in Zeo when he felt like he was going to be replaced. Don't get me wrong. I love both Trini and Rocky. They embody everything a good ranger needs to have, indeed they embody everything a good PERSON needs to have, because rangers are PEOPLE first. But as you've shown the BEST rangers also grow, and learn from their experiences to be better people AND better rangers. Trini and Rocky didn't do that.

@TheDisneyBrain 6 лет назад
I completely agree with your points regarding Rocky. Honestly, I think Justin was a better overall character with everything working against Turbo. With Trini, she at least had a couple of family oriented episodes that I thought did well to characterize her, even if she never really grew in the same way Billy did. I think that's important too, because I would make a similar argument about Lily from Jungle Fury. She doesn't grow nearly as much as the others, sans Dom probably, but we got to see who she really was and Jungle Fury allowed her to use that to contribute to important plot points. Although I can't recall if Trini has a similar trajectory going for her.
@Cen2050
@Cen2050 6 лет назад
Your quite right, Trini had focus episodes, and a fair amount of them which I had forgotten. She even had huge influences in several episodes where she wasn't the character focused upon (Gung-Ho is a prime example). Do not get me wrong I LOVED Trini as a character, and a ranger. But compare her to the rest of her team: Billy got to grow as a fighter, a Ranger AND as a character. Jason HAD to grow as a person and a leader, particularly after Tommy came on board. Kimberly was allowed to grow well beyond her valley girl gymnast origins to be one of the most well thought out characters in the Zordon Era! Even Zack had to grow, initially to become the de facto 2nd in command, to almost being the one who kept Jason grounded at times. When Jason got TOO focused on the mission it was Zack who would reel him in and point out what was more important. But focus episodes or not Trini had none of that. She didn't get to grow, a few times she served as the tactically minded one (the preying mantis episode is a perfect example) And she was certainly the spiritual center of her team. Don't get me wrong she was IMPORTANT, and as the proverbial jack of all trades I'd argue she was the 3rd in the chain of command. But she never had a chance to grow and do more, or be more. This could be perhaps because she left the show but in all the episodes before her departure but the other characters had plenty of chances to grow and develop and did so. I guess I just feel like the BEST characters grow and develop as a result of being a Ranger, this is a job that should fundamentally change a person over time and make that person the best version of themselves they can be. Most of my favorite rangers are the ones who don't start out that great but who are called to job because they want to do more, BE more, and rise to the challenge of being a Ranger. Kimberly, Billy, Casey, Eric, Wes, Ziggy, Kendrix...all of them became better versions of themselves through their time and experiences being rangers, they were NOT exactly the same characters at the end of their time as Rangers that they were in the beginning.
@GuillermoSmyser
@GuillermoSmyser 6 лет назад
A great ranger is one that grows; has logical motivation and story; a multi-layered personality (that being a defined primary characterization but then some nuance that lets him or her demonstrate how they aren't always a defined-by-one-word character); satisfying interaction with other characters (not necessarily complicated or deep, I just want to know what he thinks of eac other ranger and vice versa). A good or ok ranger can get some bonus points from me personally for being light hearted but sincere and enthusiastic: the opposite of the dark and brooding loner. You can make a dark and brooding loner great by doing the things I already mentioned, I just don't like dark and brooding purely for its own sake.

Really Disney Brain? You end part 3 with Silver and Green talking about origins? Really? What a most surprising cliffhanger, having the whole aura talk, which leaves me to ask. Even with all that I know, I for one don’t know what an powering “aura” really is. Give a scientific explanation for that. And the thing about turning against the rangers for once, thank you! Power Rangers never really does that and I’m so happy that you had the heart to finally make it happen! I commend you on being able to write something as engaging as this. You have no idea how awesome this is! I rarely ever find a novel, fan fiction or even an article that holds my attention for more than about 20 minutes. I spent, in total, about almost 10 hours just reading yours so congratulations to you for writing something that I’m thoroughly interested in and excited about. In conclusion, I’m trying to say Good Job, and don’t you dare disappoint me with this fan fiction.

I do think it's natural for a team to have a weak member, we're just always categorizing so it's inevitable. It's just sad that, in so many cases, the weak link is often the red ranger, especially in later seasons. Your video made me think of a pair of videos I had enjoyed recently. How to tell a good/bad anime from the first episode. I feel like you would be a good person to approach that with Power Rangers seasons.

I agree with all of your points. Mind you I didn't mind Nick to a point as a character. I'm beginning to suspect that he wasn't supposed to be the main character. On a more personal note, the few Rangers that come off as extremely arrogant from my point of view or who the writers focs on ad nauseum are the worst. But that's a personal preference. I've also stated some of the characters I don't like elsewhere so I'm not going to do that here and cause a huge ruckus based on one of them.

What makes a ranger for me is their ability to let me know WHY they're a ranger, some positive trait that they exemplify in spades that lets me know why they were chosen to receive their powers, or why they were given them. For Sky, it was duty, he felt it was his mission in life to be a ranger, so he put everything he had into being what he thought was the best ranger. For Tommy, it was experience. Tommy entered the team being the best at martial arts, and being the most powerful among them, and his experience led him to leading the team even as everyone else left. Every great ranger has many positive traits, but they have one that stands among the others that's truly exceptional.

Gem and Gemma frustrated me, because they did so much good for Dr. K's character arc, but they themselves were such grating characters that it was hard to see why Dr. K loved them so much. I think it had to do with the fact that they didn't really have individual personalities, they could have done with a few episodes where they were separated so they could develop them as their own characters rather than the singular "we're twins" entity.
@TheDisneyBrain
@TheDisneyBrain 6 лет назад
That's true. Mike Ginn, Gem himself, actually said that after Eddie Guzelian got fired, the idea of focus episodes went away so the twins never got what the others had. But they at least got to pair up with Scott and Flynn for a bit to somewhat establish themselves as not completely dependent on each other. Also, I'm weird and actually love their grating personalities, LOL #boomtime

An thing that might have held back Lucas' story might have been trying to get away from his counterpart in the Japanese Sentai. Ayase in Timeranger was all the same things as Lucas, except rather than crippling narcissism, he had some sort of terminal illness. My bet is the Time Force writers didn't want Lucas' story to be quite that heavy, but couldn't think of a better thing to fill in that part of his character.

The thing that gets me about the Jayden worship in Samurai is that we're given a much much better alternative for the Red Ranger in Lauren. The fact that I cared more about Lauren in the little time she got, more than Jayden in the entire series made the show's constant Jayden worship even worse. As far as I was concerned Lauren was the better character and should have been the Red Ranger from the start. Or at least given half a chance to be successful.

The part where I realized there was something wrong with how Nick was being portrayed back when I watched Mystic Force, was the big reveal of the Heir Apparent 2-parter... Nick came to Mystic-Falls (if that's what the town is called) to find his Birth Parents. It was presented as being his motivations. Then when he learns WHO his parents actually are...He has almost NO reaction to them. For the one thing, he finds out that his birth mother is this old witch-woman, who has been mentoring them for quite some time now, but her sagely wisdom and care for the Rangers, never endeared herself to the Rangers as a Mother-Figure, and his Birth Father turns out to be the guy who has been trying to kill him, forcing him into one-on-one duels, for the past several months. You would think he'd be feeling an influx of emotions and denial that border on Luke Skywalker territory; not just because of Leonbow but more so for Udonna. How can you go from the kind of mentor-student relationship you have with her, to suddenly be parent-child? Nick should NOT have been calling her, "Mom" at the end of the two parter. 1; he had absolutely no reaction to that revelation, so he doesn't even remotely deserve that level of familiarity. 2; he's not DEALING with the information at all...He doesn't feel anything towards this revelation; no happiness, no anger, no confusion - you'd think those would be going through his head, yet he's written and played like he's completely indifferent to it. Not to be "that" kind of guy, but I can't help but feel like the revelation that Udonna was Nick's mother was a big misstep in the series. Mainly because of how I EXPECTED Nick to react to it. I was convinced that once he learned that the long lost, biological mother he'd been searching for, all of this time turned out to be Udonna, I just kept expecting him to say, "...You?" Completely disbelieving it and utterly disappointed by it. I think it's because of their "professional" relationship that ultimately ruined it for me. He never got the chance to know Udonna as a care-giver, and instead only got to know her as a "coworker" who gave him Ranger Powers. I can't help but feel like there'd be a barrier of formality and awkwardness to their relationship to the point where Nick would never be so casual as to call her, "Mom."

If you want a master class on how to do a good ranger Arc just look at Tommy's story he's taking over the evil when he's brought back to the good side he regrets the evil he caused. Lose his powers to save his friends, gets new powers to help his friends, leads his friends into battle so many times, and then when he finally leaves the show for a little bit he joins back as a ranger mentor when he becomes a ranger he doesn't take control of the team even though he could he's the most experienced ranger there episode about the fact that the Red ranger in Dino Thunder is worried that Tommy will take over leaving the team because he's more experienced in Dino Thunder Tommy could be the cockiest ranger just like ignore what everybody else says he knows best but he doesn't he's a genuinely good character

I think the main reason for the failure of building Jayden is that Saban kept almost every single thing from Shinkenger but decided to remove what's most important. The backstory of Takeru was the final rope that tighted everything perfectly which explained his bahaviors. The decision of making the adaptation safe for kid made the original Shinkenger plots much less reasonable. Had PR Samurai been deviated just a little more from the plots of its Sentai counterpart, things would have been much different I guess.
