I think we can all agree that they should have main characters again. I don't care if zombies is open world or round based, hard or easy, at the end of the day it's zombies and that's all I care about. I'm probably one of many wishing for a standalone zombies game, even though it won't happen, I have hope. Maybe if zombies becomes even more popular, that could happen.

I personally loved bo1 zombies the most, for me it was the atmospheric, the mystery, trying to go for high rounds, the fun times with friends and being young at the time, I sadly feel that, no matter what, you can never come close to that ever again, both because of nostalgia, being older now and from the games being so much more complex then back in the day. Its sad, but i will always love a remeber the times I had.

There do are is be a lot of tension right now. Honestly, custom maps are the only shining glimmer of hope for the OG Zombies fans.

I don’t think it’s impossible or difficult to add both styles of zombies to appease everyone, there was no way cod zombies could stay the same forever, that actually would have killed it

Zombies stopped being fun when they started to put an increasingly large amount of focus on the story and boss zombies. Zombies was fun when the story was in the background and the gameplay was simple. You cannot just hop in a map anymore and have fun. Now you have to spend 20 minutes doing all of these different steps just to turn on power. Maybe it is just me, but I do not want that. The hud is disgustingly cluttered, the quests are annoying and the gameplay is bad. Until they start to fix it, I will just continue to play the old games.

Im not against them trying new things and catering to new audiences. It just sucks being gut punched every year and getting something i cant enjoy. I think there is a world where you can have artistic maps with complex easters yet simple setups and high rounds along with objective based maps for that audience. Or maybe even 1 map that has different modes at the main menu to let you play how you want. Idk, i think the reason a lot of OG fans are upset is because they are making zombies for everyone except zombies fans. The pure toxicity in the community is too far, but i think a lot of the opinions are valid.

I think the frustration comes from the mode having a seemingly serious identity crisis & either not enough enough support or not proper direction or all the above. It’s just my subjective opinion but it’s felt this way ever since the studio tried telling two stories at once & reinventing the wheel in BO4. Call me a boomer but I think it says a lot that a side project from WAW feels more fleshed out, atmospheric, & polished than some of what they put out now.

Great video, I agree with everything and as someone who first started with playing complex bo3 maps, it’s pretty easy to enjoy round based and open world, and I am actually pretty happy excited for mw3 zombies.

I found outbreak to be intresting. I felt the objective based gameplay got a bit repetitive but the idea of having such a large map was cool I didn’t hate it persey but I’m also not a massive fan for it I just found it a intresting shake up that ofc has its flaws. For perspective iv been enjoying zombies ever sense I played black ops 1 as a kid

I enjoyed some Outbreak once in a while, but the idea of round-based maps being dropped, or even just relegated to secondary content, hurts my soul. I want finely crafted, focused, round-based maps. Give me my mobs and origins for involved, setup-heavy maps, and town survival, kino, or other such maps for simple high-round survival, preferably with the boys.

what treyarch has done is split the community on 1 side u have traditional zombies and the other is open world zombies.Also i wonder why blops3 is still played to this day

Outbreak player numbers are inflated because its the first time zombies became free to play for a while for the free to play warzone people when the cold war free Multiplayer weekends came around .

casual zombies is way better no crazy story just a chill map with maybe a few steps to unlock power areas or pap

I love your really objective look at this problem, it's hard to enjoy new zombies if you grew up playing the classic games, and it takes a different perspective and different expectations. I honestly think that nothing could really be done to fully satisfy the community, as everyone has different things they like about the gamemode.

What we missed was being along for the story and finding secrets from the dense smaller maps and the easter eggs were a legitimate achievement. What they did was take all that away and the complexity got reduced to blam blam kill zombies do objectives that mean nothing kill generic big boss small pointless cutscenes maybe

Fully agree! I'm a hardcore zombies fan but not one with a lot of time. I have played every zombies game up to black ops 3. During the end of the black ops 2 days I have lost the luxury of being able to invest a lot of time into learning easter eggs. I have grown up and am busy with my adult life which is a good thing. When black ops 3 came out afterwards, I loved it. The game was great and the first map was a blast to play. One problem. I have too busy to learn all the steps to even PaP my guns. Easter eggs had become a integral part of the game and a requirement for game progression. The more maps they added the more of an issue this became. When the first DLC came out I had a blast playing it but I did not have the time to learn how to upgrade all the bow so I only learned one. When more and more DLC came out I didn't have the time to learn all the steps required to do the setup to get to a decent round. This made me stop playing all the DLC that came out after the first one. When I got time to play a game of zombies I would just hop on the maps I was already familiar with. I choose black ops 3 for this example because it illustrates my point perfectly. In black ops 2 this was also the case for example with Mob of the dead. If you compare this to black ops 1 and you have no weapon you want to experience being locked behind an easter egg, pap is always pretty straightforward. Game progression wasn't locked behind a deep knowledge of the map easter eggs. I hope y'all read this because I'd really like to be a part of this discussion because of how passionate I am about this game mode.

there was no zombies for me after bo3 the last good game

I sorta came to the same conclusion of "to each their own" back when bo4 launched and I didn't understand any of the ui or gameplay mechanics nor did I want to. Bo3 zombies was my last cod game I ever played because it felt like a polished rendition of waw, bo2, etc...I understand that people might like these different types of zombie modes and respect that, but as an og waw player, I'm starving for some classic type zombies.

Honestly disregarding round based vs not, the lack of characters/development is what really highlights their laziness.

Giving the B team the SHG years is honestly the best way to handle the open world modes Rather than splitting the community like it did in Cold War we get a game for roundbased and a game for objective

My problem with outbreak is that is just doesn't have the same atmosphere in the map as most round based maps have. In cold war they were litterally just multiplayer maps with spooky purple crystals slapped on. I wanna feel like im in some kind of dimensional merge with zombies, not "location and oh theres also zombies"

I used to love round based zombies. But outbreak just added something fresh which didn't require me to get several PHDs to complete an Easter egg.

This whole video down to how it’s structured and the tone/language used is a brilliant, albeit unintentional, irony piece.

Something I just thought of, what if they started with a round based zombies map WITH a set of 4 characters (hell they could bring back the chaos crew) for story purposes and for the hardcore comm, and release with an outbreak map with operators for the more casual players so majority of people are pleased, all of this would be day 1 content

Im one of the oldschool that loves waw nazi zombies and didnt care for the complexities of bo2 onwards. I expressed that in a comment and i literally had a full blown arguement with someone telling me i wqs wrong and that old was "outdated and boring". Cod community has always been opinionated and toxic but it feels worse than ever, especially with zombies

Okay but this video is actually extremely truthful. Being able to jump in and have fun is super sought after. I LOVE zombies but BO4 Easter eggs are just WAYY to much for me to get into because I have to watch a 45 minute Easter egg tutorial to do it and waste three hours with my friends setting up

Id consider myself a new Call of duty player and never really played zombies (except when a friend came over) but i thought round based was fun i havent played outbreak so im excited to try MWZ but i do wish the Zombies community still gets round based back

I'm in the middle, been a fan before BO3 but not to the extreme like getting all ee done. I enjoy round based but as well as outbreak, seeing what MWIII is making for zombies actually got me excited to try it out. While it's saddening that we won't get a round based map until next year, this new mode might scratch that zombies itch for me, plus if it sucks I can always return to CW and try to get Dark Aether for all weapons still.

Very well said, I honestly didn’t hate outbreak or cold war zombies. It just wasn’t the same as iwz or bo3 zombies, in those games maps had personality and felt like art like you said. To me that was chill, simple zombies. It was so easy to kill a few hours playing. Outbreak is just dull and cold war zombies maps are plain and boring with no unique wonder weapons. I’m definitely excited for mw3 zombies and i’m gonna give it a real shot. I just hope treyarch has one more banger zombies mode in them for 2024. Not heavily focused on outbreak, i know thats not going to happen sadly. All i can really hope for is that 2024 has quality round based maps and not remasters/ warzone assets.

I enjoyed outbreak when it came to playing with friends, it was the only way I could play. I do miss round based maps and im excited to see what kind of round based maps we’ll end up getting. just hope that the story is more so tied to those maps instead of the DMZ like zombies.

Its very rare to see a zombies youtuber being reasonable like this. RU-vidrs like mrdalekjd and codenamepizza were invited into treyarch because they know these guys are always positive at all times and will always give treyarch the credit that they deserve even if their games were not well received by some fans, while others literally did not play the mode yet and upload a 1 hour video explaining on a white board why its bad and just trash whatever they get

I think we’re not 13 anymore, so can we just chill? Lol. Zombies isn’t dead, I still love playig BO3 and it’s alive and well. The newer cod zombies I personally don’t consider ”real” zombies so I don’t play them. But idc if you do, that’s fine. I just think we should accept that the golden zombies games are WaW/BO1-3, and be grateful that we got so many classic games and maps. The fact that they released Chronicles to BO3 still amazes me, such an unimaginably great decision. We are spoiled with BO3! The rank system and gun levels, custom menu music and emblem creator are very underrated IMO!

I really wish they’d make zombies feel exactly like it did before (like in bo1, bo2, bo3 & waw) and by that I mean with how the zombies spawn round based and how we had complex Easter eggs. The movement for both the player and the zombies used to be far superior in bo3, 2, 1 and waw compared to any of the newer zombies modes since bo3. I didn’t mind the sliding in bo3. That’s just my opinion as someone who grew up playing zombies starting with WAW. I guess they could also cater for the more simple minded people out there and do a mode of whatever the hell they’ve been doing for the last while too like the horrific bo4 zombies 👍

Tbf the only reason why outbreak had such a high retention of players was because it was the only thing getting new content for over half a year between firebaseZ and maure, everyone I know doesn’t find outbreak fun but they played it every now and again instead of roundbased because it was getting new content and updates frequently.

You’re 100% correct. And it points out the bigger issue which is that games engineered to cater to the lowest common denominator sell the best, but this is fundamentally incompatible with niche mechanics and story which requires longer player investment. But you all already knew this.

I played hundreds of hours of outbreak just because it was the fastest way to level weapons for the dark aether camo, I also feel like cold war has one of the worst selections of round based maps for a treyarch mainline (only 4!!)

i have played zombies since WAW and my personal opinion i just want it to go back to the way it was i remember coming home from school every day excited to play kino der toten with my brother getting to round 30 and also bo3 did it very well with the amazing easter egg story unfortunately it ended but they can bring it back and the mod tools is great to keep the game alive for years

Outbreak is what made me quit playing new zombies. With the launch of Cold War, it was obvious to me it was being warzone-ified to appeal to the massive MP population, which made zombies begin to lose its personality. Then Outbreak came out, which is just warzone with zombies, and it became abundantly clear to me that zombies was dead. It had been captured by the MP and warzone crowd, and it'll never come back. Zombies was the last thing COD had going for it, now its just an annual cash-grab everyone still participates in for some reason.

I liked outbreak. It was a pretty chill mode. I was looking forward to something similar in MW3 but just found out there's no solo. It's DMZ all over again. Great mode if you have friends :(

After BO4 (which i actually enjoying but had difficulty finding matches) I stopped being of zombies community or buying the new games for zombies (and so i didn't buy them if not for zombies) and the reason is that the community was so hating about every new zombies and maps and game mode and change of characters. I liked the new characters on BO4, both cast crews were interesting. Thanks for this video I didn't know other zombies were popular (but for other types of players)

If we ever get a zombies stand alone game, they should make a zombies story mode where an outbreak happens and you play as main characters trying to survive

You forget that as soon as Vanguard dropped a map with Roundbased Zombies, it was legit the only map that had some fun unlike anyother

I honestly really despise the argument of "people don't have time". Either make the time to play or don't play it, not everything has to cater to people that "don't have the time" to play a video game.

But people had to mod to get new “normal” zombies content ever since bo4 . We haven’t had a good zombies storyline for 10 years. And we probably never will again

If we don’t complain and let the casuals (average warzone bundle buyer with 2 hours of playtime every 4 days🤡) decide what zombies will become, we will end up like fortnite- a great game that got ruined after the og season 5 and now is a clown town

They should do outbreak like they did in Cold War. Just a side thing in zombies with operators while the OG zombies players get the main maps with playable characters. Everyone wins in this scenario.

One game should go the outbreak zombies route and the other game should do round base that way we get zombies every year a game comes out

I totally agree with your statement, we should all be responsible and understanding. But, I feel like so many of us are upset because of all the horrible game making decisions that have been made towards the zombies game mode, some have been good but majority were just straight up ass or randomness. We are all just tired of them simply not making what we want, but that comes with bias. More or less, I don’t see this nonstop back and forth ending anytime soon..

When a Dev doubles down with the criticism they recieved, then you should know that a dev is forced by the parent company to comply with the rules for corporate/business reasons

The reason why Outbreak did so well was because it was free and it was heavily marketed. Im sure if you had to pay for it, not as many of the casual audience would have touched it

I like the idea of Outbreak but it wasn't great in CW mostly because the idea of a massive open world just wasn't doable in the engine. I hope that with MWZ they manage to actually give us that. I expect a roundbased map just like VG got.

They honestly should have 2 different zombie modes. Killing Floor did this with Objective Mode and the Survival mode (10 waves) and Endless mode (or until wave 250)

For me I'm a BO2 zombies guy, nothing beats that for me, but I do appreciate the cold war zombies mode, I didn't enjoy it as much as I did way back when I played BO2 daily, but it's still fun enough to go in and play a few hours here or there, tho it also might be attributed to the fact I'm not really a CoD guy anymore, I've been skipping picking them up more and more lately, heck I didn't buy a single after BO3 until MW2019 came out, then I git Cold war and Skipped Vanguard and MW2, and I'll probably also Skip MW3 and wait until Gulf War comes out

I think they should have a round based Easter egg focused map and just do a outbreak/DMZ mode on the side for the casuals

I’m an og cod zombies from black ops 1 and i like cold war zombies both rounds and outbreak…

I like the progression system in the new MW3 zombies. When I started I was playing the game survival like just playing to get loot & get out of there. Its been a week, now I start the game with 6 perks, a papped gun, an elemental ammo mod, and atleast blue rarity weapons. I still do missions on high threat areas, any extra loot I find I give to players on the low threat zone, (that arent on a exfil) along with my papped guns, since I can get them back within an hour waiting after an exfil (aka taking a break from the game) Give different modes a chance, Zombies started with Treyarch adding a mode to a serious game for fun, its kinda silly to complain about having more ways to enjoy something you already did at some point.

I've been playing zombies since World at War's release and I can safely say I'm excited for MW3 zombies, honestly looks a lot of fun being open world with objectives and stuff. Hell I really liked Outbreak too on top of the round-based maps they released throughout BOCW's life. It's not like round-based zombies has disappeared altogether, it's like you said there's tons of maps released already in the older games, even more if you have WaW and BO3 on PC with custom zombies. Obviously MWZ isn't the end of round-based and the devs have even said they might add round-based back throughout MW3's life, I'm happy either way honestly.

I feel like Treyarch and some parts of the community forget what the roots of zombies is. It used to be a fun arcade style round-based zombie shooter with cool perks and guns. It was something you could just mindlessly play with friends. You could play just to see how many rounds you could go or you could try and do the easter eggs. The maps were scary but everything still felt fun. Now I feel like the maps almost rely on their easter eggs and story elements just to be able to play. New CoD games like BO4 got rid of the OG perk system which was a major part of the simplicity and charm of original zombies. It is a shame because the system was already perfect from the start and all we really need is new maps. We don't need the whole system to be shaken up. Just give us new maps and new weapons in the playstyle of BO1 and BO2

They also had extinction when cod ghost released, that was fun.

The biggest problem I have with catering to the warzone players like they are is that you’re basically putting a middle finger to your core audience the people who will buy every dlc to see where the story will go or just to relax on a cool new map, the warzone players however are more than likely not buying the dlc except maybe 1 or 2 and that’s that, they don’t really care they’ll play it for a short amount of time and go back to warzone, it’s a short lived victory and your core audience is either going to suffer or just straight up quit, if the new black ops game is as bad as vanguard or as boring to me as Cold War I will probably quit zombies and I think a lot of people will probably do the same. Idk if the warzone players will give them the player base they really want or if they’ll stick around long enough to make zombies a viable strategy, but at the moment round based is a side mode which is most definitely not how it should be that’s not zombies anymore, you’re essentially playing campaign with infinitely spawning enemies when you play outbreak styled maps

My friends and I, are relatively new to zombies, and after hearing this I wanna see if I can “try” to play old zombie games with my friends. Is there any maps I should avoid and some must plays? (or they all good? lol.)

The issue with current Zombies is that it's missing the soul of what zombies used to be. Open world story with BO3 characters would be fucking wonderful and I would buy that in a femtosecond. Open world map with operators that have 6 lines with no character at all? Yeah, I'm good with keeping that money in my pocket. Gotta remember the roots or you'll forget what you stood for.

Zombies started as a passion project and it’s just turned into another one of Activision’s cash cows. I understand it’s a business and it always will be but there’s SO many fans that want nothing more than to feel that old zombies magic that came from pure passion and not how many sales one or another gets, and given Call of Duty’s status i don’t see why they can’t put a passionate team together to make something like Chronicles again
