Is This Going To Hurt Forever? Part Two
Welcome to "Therapy & Theology." When you've experienced something devastating, it's easy to question if you're on your way to healing: Is it normal to feel this way? How do I stop hurting? Is this going to hurt forever? Maybe you've even said out loud to a friend, “This has been so traumatic, I’m not sure I’ll ever feel like myself again.”
Is it really possible to move forward after we’ve experienced significant trauma?
With theological research and therapeutic insight, Lysa TerKeurst, Dr. Joel Muddamalle and licensed counselor Jim Cress will help you understand the stages of trauma so you can process your pain in a healthy way and move toward healing today.

In the last 3 years 3 of my siblings have died, I was by their side and I wiped the tears from my sister eyes as she was dying and everyone expects me to act normal. I'm having a hard time. There doesn't seem to be anybody to talk to that would understand. Please pray for me.

Thank you for vulnerably sharing, seeking prayer and opening yourself to God's healing in you. I am praying for you to surrender your mind's way of thinking to God, seek His wisdom, that He may work in you, lead you to greener pastures (bring you clarity-- healing-- in your perspective, and guide you through a healthy processing of emotions). God is with you in your suffering. ❤️

I am so thankful that you are being transparent and sharing this with the world. My father walked off and left my mother 3 months after the death of my younger brother, and after 42 years of marriage. She is in so much emotional distress, but will not see a counselor. This series is the first step for her to get “through” this. Thank you, Lysa. Thank you ❤

I can’t imagine being your mother, being you in the midst of this disconnection, rejection and loss of your brother. Hold on tight to Jesus, hold on tight daily to His promise that he will never leave or forsake us. My family too is disconnected due to a horrific event this last year. I too give thanks for you Lysa, Joel and Jim. I pray the body of Christ wakes up to all the suffering and learns how to take of the the mask of superficial spirituality.

We just need the presence of the Holy Spirit to come and rest on us and heal us and get some deliverance from the trauma and strongholds (deliverance) .., then completely surrender your life to Jesus, ask God to help you renew your mind through his word but really his presence. The best healing is spending hours in his presence, human logic can sometimes make you stay in limbo longer, rest in his presence, find a prayer room set, get in your secret place, allow God to purge you don’t let him go until he changes you, fast, intercede, minister to Jesus, he’s the healer, he’s the deliverer, he Makes all things new

God doesn’t zap us. These things are helpful, but don’t remove the necessity to go through the healing process.

We are not made just of spirit…. We are made human as well. We must understand and learn our human side as well as our spiritual side. God will not do the work he already made us to handle… with his guidance we must navigate the human experience not ignore in a prayer closet. God will do what we can’t. But he will not do what he needs us to do!

@@lauriefaasua8777 Agree. I have heard many people say all you need is God. When you've been through trauma you also need people. Plus an understanding of how to get well and to process what has happened with keys and tools which psychologists provide. Worship, prayer and bible are definitely the primary things for healing however people who think we only need God have never been through trauma. You need professionals to explain what is going on in the brain because it can be quite terrifying. I can say that God is and has healed me however it has occurred through relationship with him and people.

@@lauriefaasua8777 I love this addition to the post you are replying to-- I believe we need to help one another through broadening each others messages with more thorough considerations. Complex matters are often mistakenly shared with an oversight, often not yet fully developed for some, whether one lacks the skill of analytical contemplating or whatever-- perhaps a disruption interrupted their time or thought process-- whatever may it be-- so every bit of loving support we can give to one another is helpful. The ego can harmfully intervene in this outlook, so I hope to help settle our egos and nurture opening our culture to these acts of loving support. I'd say I'm an advocate of it. I understand there is a skill to it, but if we do not practice (and receive loving prompts of deeper considerations,) we stunt our abilities and our growth...so I encourage us all to practice the giving and receiving of broadening considerations from a loving place. I love Lysa's collaborative sessions and every one of them are so valuable in their contributions and the collective whole of their work. God is doing powerful things through this (podcast? : ) Please forgive me for excluding the names of the on-camera participants of the show, the therapist and the theologian. I have newly discovered this blessing, and the names are not on my mobile screen while typing this reply. Thank you to everyone who contributes to the discussions and vulnerably shares their personal experiences, their thoughts and their feelings!

I do the same thing when it comes to future problem solving. I wonder if that is a side effect of having a great injustice laid on you. For me the shock, confusion and heartbreak and to be honest being heartbroken over and over is so gut wrenching that I think we r trying our hardest to not be traumatized again.

Yes yes and yes. I am currently retreating from others due to ‘seeing’ the trauma of others-trauma sees trauma-and how out of their own fears choose to put a spiritual bandaid on it. This causes me great anxiety, it’s like asking me to continue to live in denial. I grew up in denial outside of the church, to find denial in the church is beyond discouraging.

@@Webbgurl2000 Aaah Tu just read your comments and am smiling big. I am currently reading ‘The body keeps the score’ it is a God send. I have many questions regarding mental and spiritual health…what I find encouraging from both perspectives is it is about authentic, safe connections. Sadly at this time I am not very successful at finding safe authentic community. So for now I will retreat-am blessed with desire energy and time to read the Bible-to ask God lots of questions and to learn about the pathophysiology of my brain so I can better understand my behaviors that trip me up on my path to loving God and my neighbor.

When I'm struggling with a general problem, and finally 'figure it out' - how to fix it, even just how it happened - I do feel much better after the figuring out... However I think I should stop hoping for the same result in trying to figure out "Why did you hurt me?" - like Lysa explained... 🙏❤❤

This is beyond helpful. So many nuggets of wisdom AND comfort in speaking the truth and process of grief. I believe We may try but We can’t hide from it, we can’t medicate our way out of it. Though it stinks, it is ok to not be ok. This truth has allowed me to be not so hard on myself and others. And to stop trying to be perfect or put the mask of denial-spiritual or psychological-on. Much to learn in suffering. NOT easy but if we choose to walk through the valley with Jesus He WILL teach, grow and complete the good work He started in us. Jim you mentioned the body keeps the score-have you read the book? I am midway through and find it so helpful-finally understand some why’s of my behavior and pathophysiology of the brain and how sometimes I do not have control. Kind of like what you all said about we could not handle all the grief or trauma at once we would not survive it. It’s like when the brain literally goes into ‘shock/freezes’ we have no control over that. It has been said it is our brain protecting us but ultimately it is our merciful Father protecting us. Also curious are any of you aware of ‘The polyvagal theory’? Again thank you so much you truly are a blessing, I believe you give hope to so many by sharing the truth-bringing ALL of life into the light. 🙏❤️👆🏼

I cannot thank you enough for these videos. I am making a playlist of them to refer back to again and again. My husband and I are coming out of a season of so much loss. I am doing a lot of things to regulate my physical body but have not found much as far as Christian approaches that really touch on the devastation that you are speaking about here. Trauma. I feel so inspired by everything you shared. And I am so guilty of shopping for pain also. It does come from a place of fear, a false sense of feeling like I can protect myself, as long as I keep shopping everything should be ok. It is exhausting. Very much looking forward to the next video. Thank you!

Love this video! Is it normal to feel like God is punishing you for maybe not being perfect in the situation? I know now my ex was emotionally abusive towards me but the last interaction, after 13 years of his in and out, I reacted. He had confessed he had been hanging out with another lady who he claimed was a friend but lied to me about. I had also found her personal belongings in his house while visiting (we were long distance as we had just reconnected). I had this emotional outburst that my ex used against me and gave me the silent treatment instantly that eventually the silence turned into months and I took as a break up. I had prayed to God to bring us back together and it was good for a month but then that fall out. I took all the blame and felt maybe God punished me and ended the relationship because I reacted and sent paragraphs of texts, so God took it away from me. I’m not mad at God but I do ask him often when I pray - did I ruin it God?

Hello sister, I hope you've been doing well since posting this. I'm obviously not a counselor but I've had the same questions before. I had evidence of an ex boyfriend cheating on me at the time. I was livid and confronted him. This turned to a situation of stone walling and being totally ignored... Like they say hindsight is 20/20. Now I'm married often thank God that I didn't get married before to such a person. Being with someone requires being long suffering. A relationship that can be worked out requires being able to stand. Not to just clock out at the sight of disagreements or confrontation. It isn't healthy to go through that kind of treatment. I hope you have peace of mind, that the temporary outburst was not the reason behind the relationship ending.
